From 1958 to 1971 he was assistant professor at the Department of History of the University of Warsaw. He was the Polish Ambassador to the United Kingdom 1960�65 and to the People's Republic of China 1966�69. Rodskinzki was the author of the monumental History of China published in English as The Walled Kingdom: A History of China from Antiquity to the Present. He died in December 1997 aged 79. A sequel of the classic Chinese novel Chin P'ing Mei The Story of Hsi Men and his six wives this novel takes place in the ruinous years of the twelfth century. Moon Lady Hsi Men's first wife is still alive and her adventures and those of her son form the core of the novel. China is overrun by the Tartars split into two halves and its two Emperors are imprisoned. Moon Lady is among the fugitives who have to abandon their homes before the destructive invaders. Around her develop the fates of a host of colorful characters: rascals lechers women of easy virtue treacherous and loyal servants corrupt officials nuns and priests of varying degrees of worthiness. Their histories are told with relish realism and uninhibited abandon. The dramatic historical background of war and political and religious unrest plays a larger part in this novel than is usual in Chinese literature. Simultaneously with total upheaval and the destruction of security and wealth goes a rich flowering of Buddhism and Taoism and their temple cults. Scenes of battle or lust alternate with dreamlike sequences set in the rarefied atmosphere of temples and monasteries in which the underlying justice of the world order is made manifest. There are striking parallels to our own times: displaced persons ruthless invaders complete disintegration of the structure of the state of public and private morals. But this total collapse of the material world is counterbalanced by a revival of religion born from an understanding of the transitory nature of all things earthly. Franz Kuhn one of the outstanding interpreters of Chinese literature in the Western idiom discovered the novel and rendered the Chinese text into German. If you have had any Shangri-La type illusions about Tibet this book will soon blow them away. This book will make you laugh weep clench your fists and probably curse before you're done but it will not leave you unchanged either in your opinion of Tibet the Dalai Lama and especially of China. This is a very balanced account from the Tibetan perspective of the period roughly from the end of WWII until 1990. In addition to an unvarnished account of Tibetan bravery desire to retain their homeland at all costs and credulity and unlimited Chinese brutality and treachery there is a great deal of social insight woven in. This is not a "feel-good" story to garner sympathy for the Tibetans this is a tell-it-like-is book whose message is so daunting that I'm not sure most of the world much less the Tibetans themselves are ready to face much of it. This is not a book so much about religion although you cannot write about Tibet without writing about Buddhism as about world politics thundering down on a small isolated nation. It is about the bravery and resourcefulness of the Tibetan people and the greatness of their leader. And it is about the utter shameless cupidity and determination of the Chinese to lay hold of this strategic bit of real estate and anihilate its native population. This book should serve as a powerful reminder of what the PRC is capable of and just how much their talk is worth. The chances for any kind of an autonomous much less independent Tibetan region are slim to none but that the facade needs to be kept up for political and morale reasons. None the less it is a bitter truth that the Chinese have done the rest of the world a favor: by driving the Tibetans out of Tibet they have released a great force for peace and good to the rest of us in the form of Tibetan Buddhism His Holiness the Dalai Lama. If you have had any Shangri-La type illusions about Tibet this book will soon blow them away. This book will make you laugh weep clench your fists and probably curse before you're done but it will not leave you unchanged either in your opinion of Tibet the Dalai Lama and especially of China. This is a very balanced account from the Tibetan perspective of the period roughly from the end of WWII until 1990. In addition to an unvarnished account of Tibetan bravery desire to retain their homeland at all costs and credulity and unlimited Chinese brutality and treachery there is a great deal of social insight woven in. This is not a "feel-good" story to garner sympathy for the Tibetans this is a tell-it-like-is book whose message is so daunting that I'm not sure most of the world much less the Tibetans themselves are ready to face much of it. This is not a book so much about religion although you cannot write about Tibet without writing about Buddhism as about world politics thundering down on a small isolated nation. It is about the bravery and resourcefulness of the Tibetan people and the greatness of their leader. And it is about the utter shameless cupidity and determination of the Chinese to lay hold of this strategic bit of real estate and anihilate its native population. This book should serve as a powerful reminder of what the PRC is capable of and just how much their talk is worth. The chances for any kind of an autonomous much less independent Tibetan region are slim to none but that the facade needs to be kept up for political and morale reasons. None the less it is a bitter truth that the Chinese have done the rest of the world a favor: by driving the Tibetans out of Tibet they have released a great force for peace and good to the rest of us in the form of Tibetan Buddhism His Holiness the Dalai Lama.
