Only edition of this rare study decribing a celestial globe with Cufic lettering in the Borgia Museum at Velletri. The book also contains a dissertation on the astronomy of the Arabs, with Arabic excerpts from the works of Ahmed al-Farghani (Alfraganus; cf. GAL I, 221), one of the most famous mediaeval Muslim astronomers. Simone Assemani (1752-1821), a great-nephew of Joseph Assemani, the cataloguer of the oriental manuscripts in the Vatican library, is best known for his catalogue of the manuscripts and Cufic coins in the Naniana in Venice (cf. Il a servi notamment à Tripoli, Beyrouth, Bagdad, puis comme consul à Alep .Il témoigna du massacre de 6 000 Arméniens à Urfa en 1896.Il crée en 1878 du premier cours dassyrien à lÉcole pratique des hautes études (EPHE), quil a enseigné jusquen 1881. Passionné par les langues sémitiques : assyrien, araméen, syriaque. Il publia également de nombreux articles dans des revues comme Journal asiatique, Revue Assyrienne, etc. Son abondant fonds épigraphique, notamment syriaque, a été légué à la Bibliothèque nationale de France. Il reste une figure centrale de létude des langues et inscriptions sémitiques au tournant des XIX et XX siècles.

Only edition. - Rare account, by the French physician Paul Aubry, of Turkish military and civil hospitals, describing in detail their design and medical capacities, including accurate numbers of beds. An exceptional documentation of health care infrastructure in the Ottoman Empire, mentioning the Yildiz Ambulance, the Haider Pacha military hospital and the Haseki Hospital in Istanbul. The present offprint also contains a medical bibliography of works in German, Danish and Swedish published in 1886-87 as well as several abstracts, including an article on gonorrhoea by the Ottowa physician Coyteux Prévost, published in the "Union Médicale du Canada" in the same year. - Inscribed and signed by Aubry to Sultan Abdul Hamid II (1842-1918) on the front flyleaf. Binding slightly rubbed. Small marginal tears to pp. 39-42; last few pages somewhat creased. Library stamps erased from flyleaf and first page. From the library of Sultan Abdul Hamid II, the last Sultan of the Ottoman Empire to exert effective contol over the fracturing state and also remembered as a poet, translator and one of the dynasty's greatest bibliophiles. While his passion for books is memorialized by the many precious donations he gave to libraries all over the world and which mostly have remained intact to this day (including the 400-volume "Abdul-Hamid II Collection of Books and Serials" gifted to the Library of Congress), his own library was dispersed in the years following his deposition in 1909: books were removed to other palaces and even sold to Western collectors, the greatest part of his collection is today preserved in the Chester Beatty Library in Dublin. 3 vols. Large folio (70 x 55 cm). With 150 striking coloured plates, all lithographed on stone, printed and coloured by J. T. Bowen of Philadelphia, after drawings by John James and John Woodhouse Audubon, and the backgrounds after Victor Audubon. Each volume also with a title-page and a list of contents. Late 19th century black morocco, with gold-tooled spine, red cloth sides and marbled endpapers. First edition of the extraordinary coloured plates of quadrupeds by the world-famous French-American naturalist and painter John James Audubon (1785-1851), whose "Birds of America" was purchased at a Christie's auction for $11.5 million in March 2000, setting a world record for the most expensive book ever sold (surpassed only by the 1640 "Psalm Bay Book", sold for $14.2 million in November 2013). The plates in the present work are considered the finest animal prints ever published in America. Unlike the "Birds", it was produced entirely in the United States, making it the "largest successful color plate book project of 19th-century America" (Reese). - After the publication of his highly acclaimed "Birds of America", Audubon settled on the Hudson River and began working on the present series to document the animal life of North America. The plates were first published in 30 parts of 5 plates each, and three separately published accompanying text volumes, written by John Bachman, appeared between 1846 and 1854. A second edition was published in 1856, but "the first edition is by far the best" (Sabin). - Title-pages show some small scuff marks, a few plates with minor, unobtrusively repaired tears along the edges. The conflict in Syria between the Asad regime and various opposition groups has, since its advent in 2011, turned into a full-scale civil war. Nearly half the population has been either internally or externally displaced, most of the latter to neighboring countries. Turkey, which is hosting the lion's share of Syrian refugees without foreign aid, can serve as an example to the world. In this effort, Turkey's ciizens are to be applauded for their hospitality towards the war victims. However, as time goes by most of the refugees show no sign of returning, thus creating problems that can only be resolved by the development of a long-term policy. The aim of this book is to investigate the level of understanding their permanence within Turkish society and to explore possible solutions for their permanent integration, For this purpose the Federal Republic of Germany was seen as an immigrant target country in which recent accelerated integration was taken as the model for the study. The applicability of its integration policy was examined for Turkey with the aim of presenting the National Integration Plan of the Federal Republic of Germany, the major dominating Germany's integration policy, as a possible model for future Turkish policy during the integration process.

A guide to the Muslim monuments of Istanbul: perhaps the most important Ottoman literary source for the Islamic landmarks of the capital. Long recognized by Turkish scholars as a unique source for the city's architecture and urban form, the text, which was completed in 1195/1780 and revised and enlarged between 1248/1832-33 and 1253/1838 by Ali Sati, contains separate descriptions of each of Istanbul's more than 800 mosques, plus accounts of its medreses, tombs, tekkes, and other monuments. - From the library of John R. Walsh (1919-93), Professor of Turkish Studies at Edinburgh University, with many neat marginal notes, a few underlinings and a few notes loosely inserted or tipped in, most of which appear to be in his hand. First edition of a rare survival, illustrating the development of language studies among the officers of the British military during colonial rule in India and the Middle East. The work was compiled by Rizkallah Azoo, the Arabic Instructor to the board of examiners under the supervision of the secretary board of examiners at Fort William, Calcutta. - The book is divided into two parts, the first containing fables, anecdotes and narratives, travels of famous explorers (including Ibn Battuta and Sinbad the Sailor), and a final section on the travels of Sadiq Pasha to the Great Desert of Africa. Part two covers an extract from Kitab-ul-Wasitah, a description of Malta, and an account of European arts and sciences by Ahmed Faris Effendi, the editor of Al-Jawib. It concludes with some curious descriptions of Paris and London. - The standard examination of Arabic was a serious matter, affecting officers' roles and promotions in overseas territories. Failure to pass the elementary Arabic examination could result in deferment of appointments, and even the withholding of portions of an officer's salary. - Light exterior wear, otherwise well preserved. Rare first edition in Spanish, in the original publisher's paper wrappers, of this important work on Arabian horses, describing a voyage made in 1904 of a Spanish commission to Turkey, Syria, Mesopotamia and Palestine, to observe thoroughbred Arabian horses. The party returned to Spain with 33 Percherons, of which 27 were considered to be first-class horses. In the present work, the Spanish cavalry commander Luis Azpeitia de Moros describes their journey, their contact and negotiations with the people there, and the horses they bought. Azpeitia's account is lavishly illustrated with photographs, all with Spanish captions printed below, of not only the areas they visited and their inhabitants, but also of the several horse specimens they bought, with their name and place of purchase in the printed captions. - The present work was used as reference source by Gladys Brown Edwards in her work on the history of the Arabian horse (The Arabian: War Horse to Show Horse) (Boyd/Paul, p. 11); an English translation of the work appeared in 2001 (In Search of the Arabian Horse), and an Arabic one was published in Riyadh in 2007 (Al-Bahth `an al-husan al-`Arabi). Altogether the very rare first edition of an important work on Arabian horses, even more rare when offered with its original wrappers, as the present copy, which are illustrated with drawings of scenes of the voyage. - Wrappers a little browned and somewhat foxed (including the edges), spine slightly damaged (especially at the head) and partly cracked. Some very minor foxing throughout, but otherwise still in good condition. A very rare work on Arabian horses.

The writer and Islamic scholar Abd al-Wahhab Azzam (1895-1959), nephew of the Pan-Arabist statesman Abd al-Rahman Azzam, was educated at London's School of Oriental Studies and at Cairo University, then taught at the latter institution, where he became dean in 1945. "Appointed Egypt's ambassador to Pakistan in 1950 and to Saudi Arabia in 1954, he founded King Saud University in Riyadh and in 1957 became its first director [...] Azzam was Egypt's foremost pan-Arab intellectual" (Goldschmidt, Biographical Dictionary of Modern Egypt, p. 29f.). - An excellent copy. Folio. 1 page. On uncut wove paper, bearing the Schoellers-Parole blind embossed seal, margins uncut. The original autograph contribution of Aberrahman ou Rabah to the Committee of the World League for Peace (Ligue Mondiale pour la Paix), a remarkable organization formed in 1925 with close ties to the League of Nations. The Committee itself was composed of such notaries as Queen Elizabeth of Belgium, King Carol II of Romania, John D Rockefeller, Marie Curie, and Albert Einstein, who personally gathered the present manuscripts over the course of seven years (1925-32). Among the public figures who contributed to the project were dignitaries from the newly-created League of Nations' member states. "Our wish, we French Muslims of Algeria, like that of all Frenchmen, is the peace in dignity of France and the safeguarding of her global interests.
