‎Cosmographus, Philo.‎

‎Trinum Marinum: oder: Die an einander hangende Drey Meer Pontus Euxinus, Propontis, cum Archipelago: oder: Das Schwartze, Weisse, und Egeische Meer. Augsburg, Anton Nepperschmid for Jakob Enderlin, 1693.‎

‎Folio (305 x 190 mm). (2), 61, (1) pp. Title page printed in red and black. With 11 (instead of 18?) plates containing 22 copper engravings. Modern boards. Fascinating, little-received geographical study focusing on the Eastern Mediterranean and Asia Minor, then under Ottoman rule. The anonymous late 17th-century German author hides behind the name of "Philo Cosmographus" and is evidently identical with the "Philo Chronographus" who produced the similarly themed chronographical work, "Arca Temporum", which was often issued together with this, though produced by a different publisher and catalogued separately. The present work features an overview of the geography of the Ottoman Empire, including the Aegean, the Sea of Marmara, and the Black Sea region - the "three seas" to which the title refers. Numerous pages of plates (each page containing two copper engravings) depict maps and views as well as animals (a hyena and sheep, Iraklion and Chania, Nauplia, Koroni, Rhodes, Thessaloniki, Belgrade, Izmir, etc.). - The number of plates, and indeed even the arrangement of engravings on a single page, varies from copy to copy, but this wants 8 plates as compared to the table of plates provided in "Arca Temporum". Occasional inkstains, but well-preserved. VD 17, 7:688727L; 3:605737C. Weller, Pseud. 439.‎

‎COUTELLE - WILLEMIN (sculpsit)‎

‎DESCRIPTION DE L'EGYPTE. Papyrus.

Lisbon, Domingos Gonsalves, 1736.‎

‎Small folio (222 x 302 mm). 3 volumes bound as two. (32), 605, (1) pp. (14), 607-931, (1), 75, (1) pp. (16), 625, (1) pp. All 3 title-pages printed in red and black. Contemporary full mottled brown calf with giltstamped red labels to finely gilt spines (not uniform). Edges sprinkled red. Continuation of João de Barros's famous work on Portuguese colonial history in the Orient. First published in 1602, this is the first edition to include decade IX. Do Couto (1542-1616), chronicler and custodian of Torre do Tombo, begins with Decada IV, in continuation of de Barros's Decada III. (When de Barros's own Decada IV was discovered and posthumously published in 1615, the work effectively acquired another treatment of the same period with a different text, both numbered IV). "The 'Decades' contain "the early history of the Portuguese in India and Asia and reveal careful study of Eastern historians and geographers, as well as of the records of [the author's] own country. They are distinguished by clearness of exposition and orderly arrangement. They are also lively accounts" (Enc. Britannica). - Vols. I and II bound in a single volume. Some worming to spine-ends, with traces of worming to inner margin of the final four leaves of vol. III. A clean copy. Innocencio II, 154. Monteverde 1900. Cordier, BJ, 34 and BS, 2309. Cf. ‎Rapport sur la manifestation pestilentielle a Djeddah en 1898 suivi d'une esquisse sur les conditions générales de la dite ville [...]. Constantinople, Imprimerie Osmanié, 1898.‎

‎4to. 29, (1) pp., final blank leaf. With a folding plan of Jeddah. Contemporary printed wrappers. Stapled. Rare contemporary account of the plague outbreak in Jeddah, written by the chief sanitary inspector, documenting disease control in the Ottoman Empire. The treatise puts forward nine suggestions on how to prevent future outbreaks, including an urgent recommendation to establish a strictly isolated hospital for plague patients only, a reminder to look out for a sufficient supply of dumpcarts to get rid of dirty laundry and rags, and an appeal to disinfect all clothes, either chemically or by means of boiling, and to burn immediately all textiles coming in from Bombay or other infected places. The plan shows the Yemen, Chami and Mazloum quarters as well as the city's sewage system. With 7 pages of general information on Jeddah, discussing its climate and population, as well as the Sambuk, a traditional wooden sailing vessel. - Spine somewhat worn; small tear to the plan. A good copy of an uncommon work, never seen at auction. OCLC 44403162.‎

‎[Babel] sive Discursus de confusione linguarum, tum orientalium: Hebraicae, Chaldaicae, Syriacae, Scripturae Samariticae, Arabicae, Persicae, Aethiopicae [...]. Nuremberg, Simon Halbmayer, 1629.‎

‎(16), 144, (4) pp. With woodcut printer's device on title-page, 3 full-page engravings in the text (including specimens of Arabic) and numerous ornamental woodcut initials and vignettes. - (Bound with) II: Hackspan, Theodor. Disputationum theologicarum & philologicarum sylloge [...]. Nuremberg, Johann Andreas Endter & Wolfgang Endter, 1663. (8), 616, (43) pp. Title-page printed in red and black. With several ornamental woodcut vignettes and head- and tailpieces. - (Bound with) III: Lipmann-Mühlhausen, Jom-Tob. Liber Nizachon Rabbi Lipmanni. Nuremberg, Wolfgang Endter, 1644. 4to. (14), 512, (24) pp. With additional engraved, illustrated title-page. Contemporary vellum with ms. title to spine. Nuremberg sammelband concerning problems of oriental philology and text exegesis, written or edited by notable Protestant scholars. - I: Early scientific work of comparative linguistics, comparing Hebrew, Arabic, Aramaic, Ethiopian, Latin, Greek, French, etc. in great detail regarding grammar, lexicon, and phonetic inventory. Christoph Crinesius (1584-1629), an orientalist from Bohemia and "well versed in the Hebrew, Chaldaic, and Syrian languages" (cf. Jöcher), had studied and taught at Wittenberg before becoming a preacher in Gschwendt. After the Protestants' eviction from Austria he became professor of theology in Altdorf; the present work was first published in two parts in Wittenberg in 1610. - II: Collection of theological and philological disputations by Hackspan, who is considered "next to Salomon Glass the most important Hebraist of his age. He also studied the Rabbis closely and made use of the knowledge thus gained for theology. Furthermore, he was familiar with the Arabic and Syrian language" (cf. ADB X, 299). After delivering an excellent disputation, Hackspan was made professor of oriental languages at Altdorf although he held no degree. Numerous passages in Greek, Hebrew, Arabic, and Syrian type. - III: The first printed edition of the Sefer nizzachon, the major work of the great apologist and cabbalist Jom-Tov ben Salomo Lipmann of Mühlhausen (fl. after 1400). In this "Book of Victory", written before 1410, Lipmann attacks "central Christian teachings, especially Christian interpretations of individual Biblical passages [...] The work, which presupposes a thorough acquaintance with the New Testament, created a sensation among Christians and provoked the Brandenburg Bishop Stephan Bodecker to respond with a treatise of his own" (cf. Jüd. Lex. III, 1119). Edited by the distinguished orientalist Theodor Hackspan (1607-59), who had by a dramatic feat acquired the work theretofore existing only as a secret manuscript circulating among the Jewish community: "Hackspan visited with several students a Jew in Schnattach, with whom he had frequently spoken of the Nizzachon, but from whom he had never succeeded in obtaining it. During the visit he made the Jew so trustful that he showed him the Nizzachon, and while the students, as had been planned, ensnared the Jew in arguments and discourse, Hackspan seized his chance, got in a ready coach with the Nizzachon and left the Jew standing. As soon as he arrived at home with his booty he cut up the book, and Schnell, Blendinger, Frischmuth and other men well versed in the Rabbinic language had quickly to copy it so that one could return it to the Jew, who came for it the very next day. And through this fine deceit this evil book came into the Christians' hands and later into print" (cf. Will). The Hebrew text (constituting the major part of the work) was printed in Altdorf, the Latin text (likewise paginated from right to left) in Nuremberg. The appendix contains numerous passages in Arabic. - With autograph owner's mark "Ex libris Maresii" [probably Samuel Maresius (1599-1673, Gröningen theologian)] on flyleaf. Front pastedown with autogr. owner's mark of M. D. Winter [i. e. Magister David Winter (1643-99, Wittenberg philologist)] and ownership "Ha-Sefer jehert [A]dolf Mobring [?]"; a few underlinings in the text. Slightly browned throughout. Title-page of II (Crinesius) expertly re-margined. Occasionally slightly waterstained, otherwise a good copy of the rare major work of the cabbalist Lipmann in a contemporary sammelband. I: Jöcher I, 2198. VD 17, 14:053983L. - II: VD 17, 12:123782K. Will, Nürnb. Gelehrten-Lex. II (DBA I 452, 385). - III: Steinschneider I, 1411: 5854, 1. VD 17, 23:270299X. Will, Nürnb. Gelehrten-Lex. ‎Croce, Giulio Cesare / Nikola Palikuca (transl.).‎

‎Himbenost pritankogh Veleznanstva Nasradinova. Ancona, Pietro Paolo Ferri, 1771.‎

‎12mo. With a woodcut of the main character on the title-page. Contemporary plain wrappers. Very rare first edition of a Croatian translation of the popular comic novel "Le sottilissime astuzie di Bertoldo" by Giulio Cesare Croce, first published in 1606. Based on oral traditions, this highly popular novel told the story of the farmer Bertoldo, who is sometimes cunning and at other times stupid. In this Croatian version the translator "localized" the name of the main character to Nasreddin, thereby establishing a link with the famous 13th-century Turkish satirist Nasreddin Hodja, whose stories were well known in the Balkan region. The translator, Nikola Palikuca from Prokljan (near Šibenik) was probably the pseudonym of a friar or nun. A second edition of the book was published in 1799 in Venice. - With owner's inscriptions on the final blank and interior of the wrapper and some pencil crossing on the back of the title-page. Browned and with waterstains throughout, nevertheless a structurally good edition of a very rare book.

‎8vo. (6), 350 pp. With woodcut device to title-page. Contemporary full calf with gilt spine and spine-label. Marbled endpapers. All edges red. Charming edition of the "Hezaryek-Rouz" or "Thousand and One Days", so called to "give the work an air of originality" (Chauvin IV, 124). The last tome of an original five-volume set of these oriental tales unfolding around the Kashmiri princess Farrukhnaz. - These tales are the translation of a manuscript that the oriental scholar François Pétis de la Croix is said to have received in Isfahan in 1675 from the dervish Moclès, the latter having translated and adapted into Persian the Indian tales known in Turkish as "al-Farage Bada Al-schidda". - Although the work enjoyed far fewer editions and translations than the "Alf layla wa-layla" and is commonly said to be an imitation of the same, it cannot, as Chauvin notes, be determined whether the "Thousand and One Days" or the "Thousand and One Nights" was composed first. Chauvin quotes one commentator who prefers the "Days" to the "Nights", declaring the former "much more ingenious and more realistic, as it sometimes includes marvels, following the taste of the Oriental" (Chauvin IV, 125). Nevertheless, to this day the "Hezaryek-Rouz" is much less known in the West. - Corners slightly rubbed; small portion at head of spine chipped away; binding minimally wormed; faint traces of glue to covers. Lower edges of a few pages torn without loss to text; pp. 126f. with a grayish mark, presumably left by a bookmark. Occasional light spotting; a few pages slightly creased. Chauvin IV, 312 B. Cf. Graesse IV, 525 (later eds.).‎

‎Cubero Sebastian, Pedro.‎

‎4to. (20), 360 pp. Title-page within a border of cast fleurons, woodcut arms of the dedicatee Charles II of Spain, and several woodcut initials and tailpieces. Modern gilt blue morocco by the leading Barcelona binder Emilio Brugalla (1901-87), also active in Madrid, signed at the foot of the front turn-in: "Brugalla 1946", with the arms of the Spanish bibliophile Isidoro Fernandez (1878-1963) stamped in gold on front and back in a blind-stamped panel, double fillets on binding edges and richly gold-tooled turn-ins, gilt edges. First edition of an interesting and detailed account of the first overland journey from Spain to the East Indies (1671-80) made by the Spanish missionary Sebastian Pedro Cubero. Interestingly, Cubero covered most of his route by land, as would later Careri, thus constantly being able to observe the customs, religions, ceremonies and costumes of the peoples he visited, describing them in considerable detail. After spending time in Italy, where he was appointed as a missionary to Asia and the East Indies, Cubero travelled by way of Istanbul and Moscow to Iran, visiting Isfahan ("Hispaham") and Bandar Abbas, after which he finally arrived in India. After crossing to Malacca he was imprisoned by the Dutch and later banished from the city. He then proceeded to the Philippines and ultimately, by way of Mexico, back to Europe. "After a stint as confessor in the imperial army in Hungary, Cubero became one of the notable travellers of the seventeenth century. What set him apart was the variety of his traveller's hats. Most obviously a missionary [...], he also became [...] a representative figure of the whole exploratory enterprise. By circumnavigating the globe in his travels, he was recognized in his own time to be another Magellan, Drake, or Cavendish" (Noonan). - With bookplates on pastedown; t. p. has contemporary ownership of Pere de Ribes-Vallgomera de Boixadors, Marques de Alferras, ennobled by Philip V in 1702. Some occasional foxing and a small restoration, replacing the outer lower corner of the title-page in a subtle facsimile. ‎Cubero Sebastian, Pedro.‎

Zaragoza, Pasqual Bueno, 1688.‎

‎4to. (16), 288 pp. With woodcut illustration. Later full vellum with handwritten spine-title. Third edition of an interesting and detailed account of the first overland journey from Spain to the East Indies (1671-80) made by the Spanish missionary Sebastian Pedro Cubero. Interestingly, Cubero covered most of his route by land, as would later Careri, thus constantly being able to observe the customs, religions, ceremonies and costumes of the peoples he visited, describing them in considerable detail. After spending time in Italy, where he was appointed as a missionary to Asia and the East Indies, Cubero travelled by way of Istanbul and Moscow to Persia, visiting Isfahan ("Hispaham") and Bandar Abbas, after which he finally arrived in India. After crossing to Malacca he was imprisoned by the Dutch and later banished from the city. He then proceeded to the Philippines and ultimately, by way of Mexico, back to Europe. "After a stint as confessor in the Imperial army in Hungary, Cubero became one of the notable travellers of the 17th century. - Limp paper evenly browned throughout; first 30 pp. somewhat wormed; worm holes and some marginal flaws repaired with Japanese paper, entire title-page rebacked thus. Contemporary ownership of the San Juan convent library in Barcelona to title-page. Faded stamp of ownership to title-page and lower flyleaf. The lower flyleaf bears the handwritten ownership of Emanuel Pelegrí Pages and Joan Peregrí, students at San Andrés de la Barca. Palau 65758. Howgego C225. Sabin 17819. Streit-Dindinger V, 598. ‎Cureton, William.‎

‎Ancient Syriac documents relative to the earliest establishment of Christianity in Edessa and the neighbouring countries from the year after our Lord's ascension to the beginning of the fourth century. London, Williams and Norgate, 1864.‎

‎Folio (232 x 295 mm). (2), XIV, 196, 112 pp. Contemporary blindstamped cloth with giltstamped title to spine. First edition. - In 1837, Cureton (1808-64), assistant keeper of manuscripts in the British Museum and the only oriental scholar in the department, was commissioned to prepare a catalogue of the Arabic manuscripts, the first part of which appeared in 1846. "But a new study had already engaged Cureton's attention. During his official occupation at the British Museum immense additions had been made to the collection of Syriac manuscripts. When he entered the department these numbered about eighty; but the accession of numerous manuscripts of the highest importance from the Nitrian monasteries, which were purchased and brought over partly by the mediation of Dr. Tattam in 1841 and 1843, raised the total to nearly six hundred. Cureton, who knew nothing of Syriac when he came to the department, set himself zealously to work to conquer the not very serious difficulties of the language, and to set in order and classify the new acquisitions from the Nitrian valley. His labours while drawing up an outline catalogue were amply rewarded by the discovery of many manuscripts of the highest interest" (DNB). The present work was published, after his death following a railway accident, by William Wright (1830-89). - Occasional slight foxing; on the whole an excellent, unusually wide-margined copy. From the library of the Ducs de Luynes at the Château de Dampierre: their bookplate reproducing the arms of Charles Marie d'Albert de Luynes (1783-1839), 7th Duc de Luynes, on pastedown. First edition of the history of the Saracens and Turks, dedicated to Emperor Maximilian II. The humanist C. A. Curio (1538-1567) thinks it likely that the Turks are descended from the Huns and shows skepticism toward theories that they might be descended from the Twelve Tribes of Israel, or, as Pliny had surmised, from the Tartars. Curio describes the Saracens as a people wrought by internal strife, often defeated and fragmented by the Arabs. - Bound within the same volume is a rare commentary on the first 12 chapters of the Acts of the Apostles by the Augustinian and theologian J. Hoffmeister (c. 1509-47). - Binding slightly loosened; some reinforcements to gutters; second word rather browned in places with occasional waterstains. ‎8vo. 144 pp. Original printed wrappers. Pocket dictionary of Egyptian Arabic, providing "all sentences, phrases and a vocabulary of words that are in common use throughout Egypt, the Sudan and part of Palestine; and which are needed mostly by military men and tourists". - When the Lebanese-born Alec Cury sought the assistance of a British authority for the 1915 first edition of his work, "General Sir John Maxwell, GOC of British troops in Egypt, allowed his name to be put on the cover to give his solemn imprimatur to a work which was to go into no less than 34 editions by 1965" (McLoughlin). The present 32nd edition still proudly bears the phrase "officially approved by the late General Sir John Maxwell" on the front cover and title-page. - Aiming to enable English native speakers to learn Arabic without the help of a teacher, the manual includes useful terms and phrases for interactions at a restaurant, at the post office, with a taxi driver, or a "donkey boy", as well as terms of the oil industry, aviation and military. It provides brief observations on grammar and pronunciation as well as a table with the Arabic alphabet. - Wrappers and title-page somewhat brownstained. Otherwise well preserved. Scale ca. 1:7.4 million. Folded in contemporary marbled slipcase with leather cover label. Complete set of Schraembl's Asia maps, based on D'Anville's maps with improvements by the Austrian cartographer F. A. Schraembl and also issued as part of his "Great General Atlas" (Vienna, P. J. Schalbacher, 1786-1803). The first map shows the Near and Middle East from Turkey and Egypt to Arabia, Persia, India and Ceylon (Sri Lanka). Although the southwestern part of the Gulf is poorly explored, various Gulf cities are identified, including "Dsjulfar" (Ras al-Khaimah), "Mekehoan" (Umm Al Quwain), "Kalba", and "Ras ol Lima". ‎Dakhilih nazarataa 'umur muhaliyh wilayat [Interior Ministry for Vilayets].‎

‎Wilayat yawlalaa kharituh sydur [Road Maps of the Vilayets]. Istanbul, Dahiliye Nezareti Umur-Mahalliye-i Vilâyat Müdiriyeti, Hilâl Matbaas, [1913 CE =] 1329 Rumi.‎

‎Large 4to (260 x 328 mm). 26 bi-chrome lithographed double-page maps (each 485 x 315 mm), with 48 sheets of interleaved text, all contents unnumbered and entirely in Ottoman Turkish. Original half black cloth over red boards with cover bearing the title and the Tughra of Sultan Mehmed V Reshad in gilt. This is one of the rarest and most extraordinary works of late Ottoman cartography, produced by the Interior Ministry at the behest of the "Young Turks" regime on the eve of World War I. Published with text entirely in Ottoman Turkish, the atlas consists of 26 double-page maps, all of an extraordinary proto-modernist design, accompanied by detailed text explaining all of the road itineraries depicted. All of the maps are original productions, predicated upon the latest official sources supplied by both state engineers and private contractors. Of the maps, eight focus exclusively upon subjects from the Arab world, including a dedicated map of the Hejaz (with the Hejaz Railway and pilgrimage routes), as well as a map focussing upon Mecca and Jeddah. The atlas provides by far and away the most comprehensive and accurate record of the road system throughout the Ottoman Empire, taken in the wake of an unprecedented wave of infrastructure development. Additionally, while not part of the technical remit of the work, the maps also provide a stellar overview of the Ottoman railway system, including the Hejaz Railway and the in-progress Anatolian-Baghdad Railway. The atlas therefore gives the most authoritative historical accounts of the technical nature of the empire’s key corridors of military and commercial movement, as well as the most important routes of the Hajj Pilgrimage, during a critical historical juncture. - Internally remarkably clean and crisp, just some light natural oxidization of the original glue along the gutters of some leaves and light even toning to text pages, plus a few negligible stains, but overall in a very good condition. ‎Dalrymple, Alexander.‎

‎Remarks on a Passage from P. Warwoor, to the Strait of Sunda, The Macklesfeild-Strait on the East of Banka, with the Journal of the Carnatic, Capt. Lestock Wilson. Published at the Charge of the East India Company, from the original MS. London, George Bigg, 1789.‎

‎4to. (2), VI, 60 pp. Stitched, untrimmed. A rare set of "remarks" concerning the Gaspar Straits and the east coast of Bangka Island, published by Dalrymple from the log of the East Indiaman Carnatic. A fascinating insight into the workings of Dalrymple and the East India Company. - As hydrographer to the East India Company from 1785, Alexander Dalrymple continually sought to update and correct the charts and pilots used by the Company's captains. To this end he sought the log books and observations of many of the voyages that took place between England and China, especially where they had detailed records of the China Seas and the approaches to it. Sometimes Dalrymple would request log books from the Company or the ship's captain, or as in the present work, the captain, Lestock Wilson, has taken the liberty of contacting Dalrymple himself. Dalrymple goes so far as to publish the correspondence at the beginning of the present work. - The observations and charts made by Captain Wilson so impressed Dalrymple that he not only included them in his chart of the area and published the present sailing directions, but also persuaded the East India Company to allow Wilson, now in command to the EIS (East India Ship) Vansittart, to carry out more detailed surveying of the area on his next voyage. Again Dalrymple publishes the Court of Directors minutes regarding Wilson's commission at the beginning of the present work. The decision by the Court of Directors to allow one of their ships to delay their journey to China in order to carry out surveying work was highly unusual. In fact, Andrew Cook, in his work on Dalrymple, highlights the Vansittart voyage as one of the only times that they consented to Dalrymple's request; and the Directors state, within the minutes, the reason why: "the propriety of some early ship carefully examining the Strait on the East of Banka, which is now justly preferred to the Strait of Banka, and intimating that Captain Wilson of the Vansittart, who has already passed that way, has by his Chart and the Observations communicated to Mr Dalrymple, shewn himself well qualified for effecting the desired object." The minutes go on to set out relatively loose stipulations on how (and how long) Wilson will be allowed to carry out the survey. What they do state is that, on his outbound journey, he is to survey the waters off the east coast of Bangka Island; taking no more than ten days, though more if strictly necessary, and that he must not miss the season's crossing to Canton. For the delay this will cause, they have ordered an unusually quick turnaround at Canton, in order to catch the prevailing winds on his return. The Gaspar Strait had previously been avoided by Company ships as the shoals were deemed too dangerous for safe passage, the Company preferring the safer yet longer Bangka Strait between the Island of Bangka and Sumatra. One of the reasons for the change, as mentioned by Wilson in the present work, was the increased size of the ships, together with the advent of the pocket chronometer, a fact alluded to by Wilson, who took an example of "Arnold's making, which kept time remarkably well, and the Longitude of several points is deduced from it". Alas, the surveying work that Wilson undertook, in the Vansittart, although successful, led to her being wrecked on one of the very shoals she had gone to survey. Wilson and the crew were rescued, but many of the treasure chests onboard were lost to the numerous pirates that patrolled the waters. - Pilot guides such as the present work rarely come on the market. We are only able to trace one example appearing at auction in the last 50 years, a collection of 47 pamphlets by Dalrymple, in Sotheby's 2014. - Some light spotting, title a little dust-soiled, occasional slight browning, small tear to last leaf affecting one word. Cook 15747.‎

‎Damiri, Muhammad ibn Musa.‎

‎Kitab hayat al-hayawan al-kubra. [A Zoological Lexicon]. [Ottoman provinces, 18th century and 1615 CE =] 1024 H.‎

‎2 volumes. 8vo (160 x 216 mm / 160 x 205 mm). Arabic manuscript on polished paper. First volume: 340 ff.; title-page with gilt borders. Second volume: 178 ff. Script in black naskh with occasional words, phrases, and punctuation in red. 19th century leather and morocco with fore-edge flaps, stamped in blind. An important Arabic bestiary and the most famous work of al-Damiri (1341-1405), little known in the West. In the "Hayat al-Hayawan", al-Damiri alphabetically lists over nine hundred animals mentioned in the Qur'an or known in Muslim literature; his extensive commentary explains the use of such animals in medicine, tradition, and ancient poetry: whether they can lawfully be eaten, and their role in folklore and superstition. - Al-Damiri was a Muslim writer from Mamluk-era Egypt, and his other works are largely on canon law. His natural history, however, is considered his most influential and popular writing. - The first volume is not dated or signed, but was written in the Ottoman provinces in the 18th century; the second volume was completed by the scribe Umar ibn Abd al-Da'im ibn Umar al-Dandi on the 15th of Muharram 1024 H (14 February 1615 CE). Covers a little worn, spines professionally rebacked, some light paper repairs and soiling. A scarce and appealing piece of mediaeval zoology; complete in two volumes dating from the 17th and 18th century. Cf. GAL II, 137/8.‎

Publisher's original armorial gilt blue cloth. First edition. - Modern, encompassing history of Portuguese India, including an extensive account of the campaigns and operations of Afonso de Albuquerque in the Arabian Gulf, which he entered as the first European. "In 1506 Albuquerque was despatched from Lisbon on an expedition, intended to consolidate Portuguese supremacy in the Indian Ocean. His instructions were to monopolize trade with East India for portugal, and to exclude both Venetians and Saracens from Indian waters [...] Attacks were made on the Arab ports at Malindi, Hoja, Lamu and Brava, before continuing to Socotra [...] Sailing from Socotra with six ships, Albuquerque coasted the Arabian peninsula, sacked Muscat and Sohar, and then launched an attack on Hormuz during the months of September and October 1507. In spite of the overwhelming forces assembled against him by the island's twelve-year-old ruler, Albuquerque mounted a successful siege, with the result that the ruler become a vassal of the Portuguese crown" (Howgego I, 19ff.). - Signed "A. J. Whittle" on half-titles (but struck out in vol. 1). Slight rubbing to extremeties, fine altogether.‎
