Eisenberg, [Friedrich Wilhelm] von.
L'art de monter a cheval, ou description du manege moderne, dans sa perfection. La Haye, P. Gosse & J. Neaulme, 1733.
Oblong folio (398 x 250 mm). Engraved title, letterpress title printed in red and black, (3), 55 (instead of 56) ff. (lacking fol. 37) with 54 (instead of 55) hand-coloured engravings of horses and 4 engravings of horse tack (numbered 1-7). Period half brown calf over marbled boards with giltstamped red spine label. A truly royal copy of Eisenberg's famous riding school, which boasts beautiful illustrations of horses and horsemen (repeated from the 1727 first edition), engraved by B. Picart. Arabian horses in particular are lauded as "the most beautiful produced by the Orient. They are exceptionally fine animals, especially those from the hills of Mokha [...] Arabian horses are full of fire and vigour in general and are possessed of a great natural agility [...] Their start is like lightning, and so they are incomparable for racing and tournaments, for they are skillful as well as swift". Baron Eisenberg was one of the most famous equestrians of his day and served royalty throughout Europe as a riding instructor. - Wants a single plate (no. 37, "Le Superbe") and explanatory text (passage in a straight line after the German fashion), otherwise an excellent copy in full near-contemporary colour. Provenance: gift from Prince Gustaf of Sweden (1736-92, later King Gustav III) to Claes Julius Ekeblad (1742-1808), son of the agronomist countess Eva Ekeblad, the first female member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, and of Claes Claesson Ekeblad, with autograph ownership to engraved title: "j'ai eu ce livre de S. A. R. Monseigneur le Prince Gustave, Prince Hereditaire de Suede, Le 23 Novembr. 1764 Claes Julius Ekeblad"; additional note "illuminerad 1797 med färgor af ayaren / Claes Ekeblad" ("coloured with egg tempera in 1797"). Later in the collection of the Swedish statesman and diplomat Lars von Engeström (1751-1826) with his engraved armorial bookplate (motto "speravit infestis", "hopeful in adversity") to pastedown. Lipperheide Tc 41. Hiler 267. Brunet II, 957. Jöcher/Adelung II, 854. Mennessier de la Lance I, 438. Huth 1727. Cohen/R. 345. Hoefer XV, 774. Not in Colas.

Eisenberg, [Friedrich Wilhelm] von.
Wohleingerichtete Reitschule, oder Beschreibung der allerneuesten Reitkunst, in ihrer Vollkommenheit, durch nöthige Schulen erkläret. Amsterdam & Leipzig, Arckstee & Merkus, 1746.
Oblong folio (390 x 257 mm). 2 vols. in one. 56 ff., 63, (1) pp. With engr. title page and 59 engr. plates by B. Picart. Contemp. calf with gilt spine. Marbled pastedowns. Rare first German edition of Eisenberg's famous riding school, which boasts beautiful illustrations of horses and horsemen (repeated from the 1727 French original edition). Arabian horses in particular are lauded as "the finest produced by the Orient. They are exceptionally fine animals, especially those from the hills of Mokha [...] Arabian horses are full of fire and vigour in general and are possessed of a great natural agility [...] Their start is like lightning, and so they are incomparable for racing and tournaments, for they are skillful as well as swift". - Binding rather chafed in places; hinges beginning to crack. Some edge damage to plate IV; some browning or brownstaining to margins. From the collection of the Leipzig jurist and later senior alderman of the Leipzig council, Christian Gottlob Bose (1726-88), with his autogr. ownership "C. G. Bose. 1748" on the printed title. The Boses, a wealthy Leipzig family of merchants and aldermen, were close friends of the family of the composer Johann Sebastian Bach. While it was known that the twelve-year-old Christian Gottlob had taken violin lessons with the theologian J. C. Weiß, the young law student's passion for horses - an expensive hobby, but well within the means of any son of the gold and silver manufacturer Georg Heinrich Bose (1682-1731) - was hitherto unknown. Ellerbe / DMJM (architects).
MODA Medical Center. Master Plan Drawings. Livorno, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Mediterranean Division, for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Ministry of Defense and Aviation - Directorate of Military Works, May 1977.
Large oblong folio (556 x 383 mm), identified as "volume 10". Photostat, 328 pp., block-bound with screws. The Master Plan Drawings for an enormous, never-realized Medical Center which the U.S. Ministry of Defense and Aviation (MODA) aimed to build for the Saudi Arabian Army near Al-Kharj, some 70 km south of Riyadh. Part of an ambitious programme to develop major military medical facilities at Mecca and Riyadh, the project quickly expanded, at the Saudis' request, from a 400-bed hospital in the capital to a massive 600-bed medical center far outside Riyadh with acute care, teaching and research facilities, involving the planning of a small medical city near Al-Kharj with a population of some 15,000 people. The architects whom the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers tasked with the development were Ellerbe and DMJM (Daniel, Mann, Johnson & Mendenhall), two concerns with extensive and international experience in designing medical facilities. By 1976 the cost estimate for the Al-Kharj center had risen to no less than $4.1 billion; in February 1977, the completed master plan was presented to Prince Turki bin Abdulaziz in Riyadh. He appeared pleased but had already suggested that funding might need to be drawn out over a period of 20 years. In early 1978, all funding was abruptly withdrawn, and the architects' design work was brought to an unexpected end before any construction work even began. Today, the desert site north of the highway at Al-Kharj remains as bleak and empty as it appeared in the 1970s. - The present set of ground plans, elevations, and three-dimensional renderings, one of a small number of Master Plan sets produced in 1977 shortly before the programme fell through, shows the extent of planning reached, as well as the humongous scale of the project. A unique survival, and a poignant document of MODA's apparently limitless "willingness to build facilities to modernize every aspect of the Saudi Arabian military structure" (Grathwol/Moorhus, p. 394) at a time when increasing oil revenues redefined the limits of the possible. - In excellent state of preservation. Cf. R. P. Grathwol, D. M. Moorhus: Bricks, Sand, and Marble. U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Construction in the Mediterranean and Middle East, 1947-1991 (Washington, 2009), pp. 394-397.

Elphinstone, Mountstuart.
An account of the Kingdom of Caubul, and its dependencies in Persia, Tartary, and India: comprising a view of the Afghaun nation, and a history of the Dooraunee monarchy. The second edition, with an entirely new map. London, Longman et al., 1819.
8vo. 2 parts in one volume. XXIII, 512 pp. XII, 495 pp. With 14 (13 hand-coloured) aquatint plates and an engr. map. Contemp. red half morocco with marbled boards, endpapers and edges. ERGUN ÖZBUDUN.
Regime changes and transitions in Arab Spring Countries.
New English Paperback. Pbo. Roy. 8vo. (23 x 16 cm). In English. 149 p. "This book is based on the papers presented at the "International Workshop on Democratic and Constitutional Transitions in the Middle East," organized by Istanbul Sehir University on 11-12 May 2012. The Arab uprisings have been analyzed in detail in this volume along with the questions below: How to explain the sudden eruption of the uprisings? Are they protests without sufficient organization to overthrow the authoritarian systems? Is the discourse of protest Arab-specific or does it touch on apparently universal values of liberalism, democracy, participation, and human security? What is this "democratic transition" that inspired the Arab awakenings, when "democracy" can mean so many different things to people? What kind of a state and economic system will these countries have? Is Islam compatible with different forms of government? Can Turkey serve as a model for the democratizing Arab countries?".

Erpenius, Thomas.
Arabiae linguae tyrocinium. Id est, [...] grammatica arabica. Cum varia praxios materia, cuius elenchum versa dabit pagella. Leiden, Jean Maire, 1656.
4to. (12), 282 pp. Title printed in red and black with large engraving. - (Bound with) II: Sennert, Andreas. Arabismus, h. e. praecepta arabicae linguae [...]. Wittenberg, Fincelius, 1666. (8), 166 pp. - (Bound with) III: The same. [Mi'a Matal]. Centuria proverbiorum arabicorum. Ibid., 1658. (24) pp. Contemporary vellum with ms. title to spine. I: Third, most encompassing edition of the first scientific Arabic grammar written by a European scholar. Erpenius had published his "Grammatica Arabica" in 1613, having completed it four years earlier while staying in Paris with Casaubon. A second edition appeared in 1636 - edited by Anton Deusing, a pupil of Golius - adding the fables of Lokman and Arabic proverbs earlier edited by Erpenius. The present edition was edited by Golius himself, Erpenius's successor to the chair of Arabic. Repeating Deusing's 1636 edition, it now adds a modest Arabic chresthomathy previously edited by Golius's pupil Fabricius. This copy includes the cancel-slip for two lines of text and a catchword on f. *2v. Interleaved between pp. 200 and 201 with five ms. pages by a Swedish scholar (c. 1915). - II: Second edition of Sennert's Arabic grammar, followed by a concise Arabic dictionary. - III: Only edition of this rare collection of Arabic proverbs with their Latin translations, also prepared by the German scholar Sennert (1606-89), himself a pupil of Golius and in 1640 Jakob Weller's successor as professor of oriental languages in Wittenberg. - Somewhat browned due to paper, but well-preserved altogether. Several old ownerships on flyleaf, including a note of acquisition dated Wittenberg, 1619, and the ownership of Ernst Friedrich Tobias (dated Feb. 1725). I: Smitskamp, BO 72. Schnurrer 81. Juynboll 148f. - II: Schnurrer 82 (note). VD 17, 12:130977S. OCLC 836692815. - III: VD 17, 3:313989Z. OCLC 633598572.

Erpenius, Thomas.
Grammatica arabica cum fabulis Lokmani etc. Accedunt excerpta anthologiae veterum arabiae poetoetarum quae inscribitur Hamasa Abi Temmam et notis illustrata ab Alberto Schultens praefatio. Editio secunda. Leiden, apud Samuel et Joannes Luchtmans, 1767.
Small 4to. (14), CXXXII, 603, (69) pp. With engraved vignette and the engraved coat of arms of Wilhelm Count Bentink. Contemporary half calf with giltstamped spine label. Erpenius's famous grammar, a landmark in Arabic studies until the early 19th century. This edition is a line-for-line reprint of the 1748 edition (which in turn repeated the one edited by Golius in 1656), with only the indexes expanded. It also contains a collection of pre-Islamic folk songs, the "Hamasah" of Abu Tammam, added by the editor Schultens, as well as an extensive preface discussing the relationship between Hebrew and Arabic. Erpenius (1584-1624), professor of oriental languages at Leiden, first published his "Grammatica Arabica" in 1613, having completed it four years earlier while staying in Paris with Casaubon. He is regarded as "one of the men whom the study of oriental languages owes its resurrection [...] He set up his own printing shop with Hebrew, Arabic, Syrian, Ethiopian, and Turkish type" (cf. ADB). Until well into the 19th century his works, published in numerous editions, remained the foundation of Arabic language teaching in the west. The editor of this edition, Albert Schultens (1686-1750), also served as professor of Oriental Languages at Leiden (1732-1750). During his lifetime he was the principal teacher of Arabic in Europe, and followed Erpenius's tradition in restoring the reputation of Arabic studies, vindicating the importance of the comparative study of the Semitic languages against those who regarded Hebrew as a sacred language beyond the realm of comparative philology. - Spine slightly rubbed, minor foxing to title page, otherwise in very good condition. Schnurrer 106. Smitskamp, BO 75. Breugelmans, Fac et spera (2003) 1656:1. F. De Nave, Philologia Arabica (1986) 72.
