‎DESCRIPTION DE L'EGYPTE. Botanique. Salsola alopecuroides, Salsola echinus, Salsola tetrandra, Caucalis tenella. (Histoire Naturelle, planche 21)‎

‎DESCRIPTION DE L'EGYPTE. (ETAT MODERNE, volume I, planche 14)‎

‎Graziani, Antonio Maria.‎

‎De bello Cyprio libri quinque. Rome, Alessandro Zanetti, 1624.‎

‎Small folio (184 x 250 mm). (8), 330, (28) pp. Architectural title page engraved (Cl. Mellan sculps.). With woodcut printer's device on final page and several initials, head- and tailpieces. Contemporary full red morocco, lavishly gilt, with the arms of the Barberini family on an inlaid shield of different-coloured leather on both covers. All edges gilt. First edition, dedication copy. - One of the fundamental sources for the Ottoman conquest of Cyprus in 1571, when the Turkish forces invaded the island with 400 ships and some 100,000 men, massacring Nicosia's 20,000 inhabitants. Thus wrested from the Venetians, Cyprus would remain under Ottoman rule until 1878, when it was ceded to Britain as a protectorate; Ottoman sovereignty continued until the outbreak of World War I. - A. M. Graziani (1537-1611) studied the law at Padua before becoming secretary to Pope Sixtus and, in 1592, bishop of Amelia (in Umbria). Pope Clement VIII sent him as his nuncio to the Italian princes and states to unite them in a league against the Ottomans. Graziani having died in 1611, his account was published only posthumously: it was edited by his son Carolo, who dedicated the book to Cardinal Francesco Barberini, nephew of Pope Urban VIII. Barberini was created a cardinal in 1623; in 1627 he became librarian of the Vatican, and in 1632 vice-chancellor. The engraved architectural title (by Claudio Mellan after Antonio Pomeranci) shows History, "magistra vitae", seated atop an elaborate Baroque structure which incorporates Barberini's arms. This is the dedication copy bound for Cardinal Barberini himself: both covers show the crowned bee arms of the Barberini family on dark green leather, enclosed within borders of blind rules and double fillets with corner fleurons and two different bee cornerpieces, all set within a wide floral border and double gilt fillets. Even the spine is richly decorated with bee tools running up and down between a floral railing. - Corners insignificantly bumped, joints barely starting at foot. Some browning and slight waterstaining throughout, also visible on covers, but endpapers replaced with old paper. Later armorial bookplate of the collector John Stafford Reid Byers (1903-84), of Waterfoot House, Newcastle, County Down, to pastedown. Blackmer 726. Cobham/Jeffery, p. 24. Bruni/Evans, Italian 17th-c. books in Cambridge libraries STC 2547. NUC 211:420. BMC 91:156. Maggs, Cat. 697 (1940-1), no. 114 (this copy). Not in Atabey or Aboussouan. Leipzig, Hinrichs, 1814.‎

‎8vo. 2 volumes bound as one. (10), 125, (3) pp. (2), 154 pp. With an engraved folding frontispiece view (of Yedikule fortress in Istanbul) and 3 engraved maps (2 large folding), the view coloured, 1 map with the Ottoman-Persian border coloured in blue and red, and all three maps with the route coloured in red. Further with decorated rules on the title-pages. Set in fraktur types with incidental roman. Mid 19th-century boards covered with chemical-marbled paper, sewn on 3 recessed cords, with the arms of Friedrich Wilhelm IV, King of Prussia (crowned eagle, with the Order of the Golden Fleece) in gold on the front board, printed spine-label in sans-serif type. First and only German edition of Griffith's account of his journey (leaving England in 1785) from Smyrna (Izmir) through the Dardanelles to Constantinople (Istanbul) and back by ship, then from Smyrna overland through Turkey and (after crossing the corner of the Mediterranean) from Antioch via Aleppo and by caravan across the desert in what is now Syria and Iraq to Basra. On his return trip by ship he visited Muscat, which he also describes. For most of the journey he travelled disguised as a "poor Greek", allowing him to see people, especially in the poorer layers of society, with an intimacy not possible for most European visitors. Griffiths, a British (Edinburgh?) medical doctor, first published his account in English in 1805 as Travels in Europe, Asia Minor and Arabia. The author notes that he limits himself to "faithfully describing such things as he saw, the scenes in which he participated, and offering ... reflections which resulted from the impressions", avoiding second-hand accounts, speculations or borrowings from other publications. Although he in fact sometimes borrowed accounts of parts of Turkey published by his friend William Eton in 1798, much is reported first-hand, including his extensive travels in Anatolia and beyond. He is unabashedly critical of the Turks and the French (the English edition was published one year after Napoleon declared himself Emperor and while England and France were at war) but shows admiration for the Bedouins, noting their honesty, "liberality, kindness, and strict regard for their engagements". He describes the use of opium and tobacco, coffee houses, bazars, puppet shows, clothing of the men and women, cookery and the daily life of common people. At Muscat he saw beautiful Indian girls performing a nautch dance, which initially disgusted him, though he notes that more intimate acquaintance with the music and dance turned him into a nautch admirer. Part of the journey was made in the company of David Hays, English merchant and consul at Aleppo, his seven-year-old daughter Marianne (who spoke Arabic, Greek, French, Italian and English fluently) and an Armenian servant. Hays died during the journey around 1786 and Griffiths continued with Marianne to Basra where he arranged for her return to her mother in Aleppo, where she later married the British consul. The three maps show a detail of the Dardanelles, Asia minor, and the regions between the Mediterranean and the Gulf, each with Griffiths' route coloured in red and the last indicating with the boundary between the realms controlled by the Ottoman and Persian Empires (at this date running from the Gulf through Kurdistan) coloured blue on the Ottoman side and red on the Persian side. - With a contemporary black ink owner's stamp (oval with script "Beyer") at the head of the first text page and foot of last text page; arms on the binding of Friedrich Wilhelm IV (1795-1861), King of Prussia from 1840 to 1861; later 19th-century red ink stamp (round) of the Royal Library in Berlin on the back of each title-page; and a blue ink stamp (rectangular, in Russian) of the All-Union State Library of Foreign Literature in Moscow, established in 1921, on the back of the first title-page. With a small gap at the foot of the folding view running 2.5 cm into the image (1.5 mm wide at the edge of the image: fold shaved by the binder), a chip in the gutter margin of the second title-page and occasional minor stains, but otherwise in good condition. Binding somewhat rubbed, and spine damaged at the head and foot. Account of a 1780s journey through Turkey and the Middle East to the Gulf and back via Muscat. Cf. Atabey 530-531 (English & French eds.). Blackmer 755 (English ed.). Gay 3573 (English & French eds.). For Griffiths see also: R. ‎Travels in Europe, Asia Minor, and Arabia. London, T. Cadell & W. Davies (printed by John Brown in Edinburgh), 1805.‎

‎Large 4to. XIX, (1), 396 pp. With engraved frontispiece (W. I. Thomson pinx., E. Mitchell sculp.), engr. folding map, and 4 engr. plates (2 folding). Later marbled half calf with giltstamped red spine label. First edition, dedicated to the travel writer Elizabeth Craven (Margravine of Brandenburg-Ansbach, formerly wife of the Earl of Berkeley, and friend of Horace Walpole). Griffiths travelled the Orient in 1785 in Greek disguise. His journey took him via Constantinople and Chios, Smyrna, Sardis, Konia, and Taurus to Syria, Antioch, and Aleppo. In Mascat, Oman, he gives a rather baffled account of an oriental dance ("nautch"). - Some browning due to paper, but well-preserved. An untrimmed copy. Atabey 530. Blackmer 755 (wanting half-title). Weber II, 607 (counting 2 plates only). Gay 3573. Graesse III, 155. OCLC 4951921.‎

Vienna, (v. Ghelensche Erben für) Kaulfuss Witwe, Prandel & Comp., 1844.‎

‎8vo (150 x 230 mm). (2), XVIII, 257, (3) pp. Contemporary green full calf, spine prettily gilt with title and ornaments, cover with gilt rules and border decoration enclosing a blind-tooled Rocaille centrepiece. Leading edges gilt, gilt inner dentelle, all edges gilt. Red silk divider. First edition of this important study of the plague in Egypt and the quarantine laws to prevent its spread; the "principal work" (Hirsch) of the German physician J. F. Reinhold Grohmann (1784-1867). Educated in Leipzig and Vienna, Grohmann was travelling to Constantinople when the Russo-Turkish War of 1806 stopped short his journey in Bucharest. He remained there and witnessed a particularly severe plague epidemic in 1813. He spent much of his subsequent career in the East before settling in Vienna; from 1831 to 1833 he was a member of a committee convened to formulate new standards for plague epidemics. In his medical work he described the plague as a nervous fever affecting the brain, little influenced by the climate. His son Paul Grohmann would go on to be one of Austria's most famous mountaineers of his age. - Very well preserved in a splendid Austrian master binding. Removed from a baronial library with a crowned monogram stamp "MK" to title-page. Ibrahim-Hilmy I, 278. Hirsch II, 661. OCLC 14832432. Not in Wellcome.‎

‎Guadagnoli, Filippo.‎

‎Apologia pro christiana religione […] respondetur ad obiectiones Ahmed Filii Zin Alabedin, Persae Asphahensis, contentas in libro inscripto Politor Speculi. Rome, Propaganda Fide, 1631.‎

‎4to. (12), 607, (1) pp. Contemporary vellum with handwritten spine title. First edition of this important polemical work by Guadagnoli (1596-1656), the first Italian to teach Arabic and Syriac at La Sapienza and one of the correctors for the enormous Arabic Bible which the Propaganda Fide press began work on in 1632. The present piece of theological disputation was "launched against the Safavid scholar Ahmad b. Zayn al-'Abidin. This fascinating dispute was provoked in the first instance by the anti-Muslim tract penned by the Navarrese Jesuit Jerónimo Javier [...] That work found its way to Safavid Persia, where Ahmad b. Zayn al-'Abidin wrote a polemic response that refuted Christianity; he sent it to Rome in hopes that his arguments would convince the Pope. Scholars in Rome, among them Guadagnoli, studied the Safavid text and prepared their own refutation of it, which was published in the Roman presses of the Congregation [...] The work enjoyed wide circulation and reached the Muslim East; we known that it was wielded as a tool of religious propaganda at the court of the Great Mughal, and that years later, in the eighteenth century, an occasional Christian missionary would study it as a valuable resource for religious disputation with Muslims [...] The 'Apologia' contains, for example, quotations from the Qur'an that are written in Arabic and always accompanied by Guadagnoli's own Latin translation [...] The 1631 [first] edition is intensely anti-Islamic and full of ad hominem attacks on the Prophet, while curiously the 1637 version shows an evolution toward a somewhat greater respect for the religion" (García/Rodríguez). - Binding a little loosened. Lightly browned and brownstained throughout, title-page somewhat more strongly. Lacks the lower margin of a2; repairs to the inner and outer margins of A3 (insignificant loss to text). M. García-Arenal and F. Rodríguez Mediano, The Orient in Spain [Leiden: Brill, 2013], p. 302f.‎

‎Guadagnoli, Filippo.‎

‎Breves arabicae lingua institutiones. Rome, Propaganda Fide, Joseph David Luna, 1642.‎

‎Folio. [12], 349, [1], [2 blank] pp. With the Propaganda Fide's woodcut rectangular Jesus and Apostles device on the title-page, their round Jesus and Apostles device above the colophon, 1 woodcut tailpiece, 2 woodcut decorated initials (2 series), and numerous decorations built up from cast arabesque fleurons. Set in roman, italic and Arabic type with incidental Hebrew. Contemporary sheepskin parchment, sewn on 5 cords (3 secured to the boards, 2 cut flush with the bookblock), headbands worked in pink and white, edges sprinkled pink and blue, manuscript spine title in 2nd of 6 compartments. First and only edition of Guadagnoli's Latin grammar of the Arabic language, in a luxurious folio format. In 1632 the Propaganda Fide had begun work on an Arabic Bible that was not to be completed until 1671. Guadagnoli (1596-1656) was one of the correctors for the Bible and in the present grammar, set in the same type, he notes that they have taken special care with their Arabic setting and with the metre to suit them to the desires of native Arabic speakers, though the fact that the text was in Latin and the fact that it must have been an expensive book would have limited the audience: it is not the sort of book that missionaries would give away to common people. Erpenius's 1613 grammar, revised and reprinted several times, was aimed primarily at European scholars. The main text opens with a table of the letters, showing (from left to right!) the stand-alone, initial, medial and final forms, along with the name of each letter and its pronunciation. This gives an overview of the new Arabic Bible type. The texts used as examples include the first printing of two poems taken from manuscripts in the oriental library collected by Pietro della Valle (1586-1652) in Rome: the "Carmen Chazregiacum" and the "Carmen de invocationibus". The Arabic type may have been cut by the Propaganda Fide's in-house punchcutters for their Arabic folio Bible, whose Pentateuch was printed from 1632 to 1635 but distributed only in proof copies until the complete Bible was published in 1671. Occasional lines appear in their other books from 1636, but the present book uses it for the main Arabic text. It was to become the staple of their Arabic printing. The book also gives a nice synopsis of the Propaganda Fide's large Hebrew type (6 mm mem-height). - With early manuscript shelf-marks in ink at the foot (R III 20) and on the back (R III 8) of the title-page. Most of the sheets have browned patches or browned spots, but otherwise in very good condition and with generous margins. Binding very good, with only minor wear and a couple small abrasions. An important Arabic grammar intended for native speakers. Amaduzzi, p. 11; Schnurrer 72; Smitskamp, Philiologia orientalis 220.‎

‎Guignes, Joseph de, French orientalist and sinologist (1721-1800).‎

‎"Extraits du Man[uscript] ar[abe] no. 689". Autograph manuscript. [Paris?, c. 1790?].‎

‎4to. 22¼ pp. on 12 ff. Extracts from the Arabic historical manuscript "no. 689" by Joseph de Guignes, the famous French sinologist and orientalist, with notes on the history of Egypt during the years 1517-1522 and the Ottoman conquest by Sultan Selim. Guignes's notes start at f. 111 and end at f. 334 of the Arabic manuscript, which is a part of a historical work on Egypt entitled "Bada'I al-Zuhur fi Waqa'I al-Duhur". The "Bada" was written by the famous chronicler of the late Mamluk and early Ottoman period in Egypt, Muhammad Ibn Iyas (1448-after November 1522) and today is kept in the manuscript section of the French Royal library (no. 1825, ancien fonds no. 689). Guignes's extract contains numerous of transcripts in Arabic script. - Today, Joseph de Guignes is best known for his "Histoire générale des Huns, des Turcs, des Mogols, et des autres Tartares occidentaux" (Paris, 1756-1758), for his unsuccessful attempts to decipher Egyptian hieroglyphics (before the 1799 discovery of the Rosetta Stone and Champollion's breakthrough), and for his theory that China was an outpost of Ancient Egypt.‎
