Ptolemaeus, Claudius.
Sexta Asie Tabula. Ulm, Lienhart Holle, 1482.
Double-page woodcut map, fine original hand-colour, with near-contemporary manuscript vignette illustrations of an Ababeel bird, Makkah and Kaaba in pen and wash heightened in gold. 414 x 572 mm. Framed (78 x 56 cm). The first-ever printed woodcut map of the Arabian peninsula, here in original hand colour and adorned with unique, hand-drawn illumination added by a contemporary artist. The map was published in the first atlas printed outside Italy; it was the first atlas to be illustrated with woodcut maps. Remarkably, the hand-drawn vignette illustrations include a depiction of the relief of Makkah, besieged by Abrahah, through the Ababeel birds, who pelted the attacking army of war elephants with burning stones from the pits of the fires of hell. The image shows a gigantic blue-and-gilt Ababeel bird above the city, engulfed in flames - not only one of the earliest depictions of Makkah but also an amazing example of cross-cultural exchange of narratives during the early Renaissance, proving a Western illustrator's familiarity with a Middle Eastern tradition famously referenced in the Qur'an (sura 105, known as al-Fil, The Elephant): "Wa 'arsala 'Aalayhim tayran 'Ababeel, Tarmeehim bihijaratin min sijjeel" ("And He sent against them birds in flocks, Striking them with stones of burning clay"). No other example with these illustrations of Makkah is known, nor are they contained in any printed edition of Ptolemy. Campbell, Earliest Printed Maps, p. 179-210. Schreiber 5032. Ptolemaeus.
Sexta Asiae Tabula. [Rome, Conrad Sweynheym and Arnold Buckinck for Domitius Calderinus, 1478].
Engraved map of the Arabian peninsula, printed (as usual) on two joined folio leaves (together 563 x 396 mm). Framed (79:63 cm). Highly important early map of the Arabian Peninsula and adjoining regions, from the extraordinary 1478 Rome edition of Ptolemy's "Geography", created under the direction of Conrad Swenheym (who apprenticed with Gutenberg). The second map of the Peninsula ever published, in its first state, this is the earliest obtainable printed map of Arabia, preceded only by the less detailed and crudely engraved specimen in the Bologna edition of Ptolemy, which is generally regarded as unobtainable. - The present map is an excellent example of Swenheym's finely engraved map of Arabia, based upon Ptolemy. Among the towns shown are Medina (Lathrippa) and the archaeological sites of Zubarah (Catara) and Al-Dur (Domana). The association of Macoraba with Mecca is disputed. Shirley notes that "[t]he new copper plates engraved at Rome for the 1478 edition of Ptolemy's 'Geography' are much superior in clarity and craftsmanship to those of the Bologna edition. There is evidence that work on the Rome edition had been started in 1473 or 1474, and several of the plates may well have been engraved before those printed [by Taddeo Crivelli] at Bologna in 1477. The printing was carried out by two skilled printers of German origin: Conrad Sweynheym and his successor Arnold Buckinck; the publisher was Domitius Calderinus. Many consider the Rome plates to be the finest Ptolemaic plates produced until Gerard Mercator engraved his classical world atlas of 1578" (p. 3). - Until the 1477 edition was definitively dated, the 1478 edition was believed to be the first printed atlas. Buckinck completed the work started by Sweynheym, whose method of using a printing press for the copperplate maps, together with the fine engraving, produced excellent results. Christopher Colombus owned a copy of this edition, which he annotated. The plates for the 1478 Rome Ptolemy were later purchased by Petrus de Turre in 1490, who published the second, unchanged edition of the map; it was again reprinted in 1507. The editions are identical, although there are different watermarks in the paper (though there is some debate as to whether the watermarks are in fact completely reliable in determining the editions). - Some faint stains along the edges of the paper and in the gutter. In very good condition. Al Ankary 3. Nordenskiöld 201.21. Tibbetts 4. Campbell, Letter Punches: a Little-Known Feature of Early Engraved Maps. Published by BURHAN CAHID [MORKAYA], (1892-1949).
[TEACHING THE NEW LETTERS] Köroglu + Yeni Köroglu. No: 1-104 (1928-1929).
Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Contemporary quarter leather bdg. Handsomely bound. Six raised bands to spine, the second compartment has the title, the fifth has "issue 1-104", and the sixth has ex-owner's name of the volume, "Semseddin" lettered gilt. Original end-papers of the period. Slightly age-toned on the lower pages, fading on extremities of boards, overall a very good volume. Folio. (41 x 29 cm). In Ottoman script (Old Turkish with Arabic letters) and Turkish with Latin letters. This folio volume consists of 104 issues of the periodical, each issue has 4 pages, which has mostly color illustrated covers as well as several b/w ones. A rare togetherness of the first 104 issues of this Turkish satirical magazine, richly illustrated with thousands of attractive illustrations and caricatures, was published in Istanbul twice a week every Wednesday and Saturday with at least four, at most eight pages, during the Letter Revolution 1928, when the transition from the Arabic alphabet to new Latin letters was ensured. The collection provides an invaluable resource, reflecting the changes in society during and after the Letter Revolution in New Turkey, 1928, placing the new Latin alphabet instead of old Arabic letters and contributing to the development of reading and writing skills of the new Turkish society, as well as "creating the basis for the rapid social evolution in the young Turkish Republic Revolution" soon after the proclamation of the Republic in 1923. The newspaper had a printing house with the same name headquartered in Bab-i Ali (The Sublime Porte of Constantinople), the place where the heart of the Ottoman press was. Burhan Cahid Morkaya left Karagöz Newspaper and founded Köroglu Newspaper in 1928 and wanted the people living in Istanbul and Anatolia to be able to read and write new letters. Indeed, during the period of its publication, Köroglu Newspaper reached the most remote corners of the New Turkish Republic with its attractive cartoons covering local and mostly international subjects. In addition to this news and cartoons, Morkaya also published Turkish reading passages with Arabic letters that were transcripted into Latin letters. Therefore, he created a great positive effect that facilitated the transition to new letters during the Turkish Alphabet Revolution. Duman 1155.

Qaysari, 'Abd al-Muhsin al-.
Sharh al-'Arud al-Andalusi. [Medina, Nejd, Ottoman Empire], [Sept. 1734 CE =] Rabi' al-Thani 1147 H.
4to (165 x 213 mm). Arabic manuscript on polished oriental paper. 53 pp. on 28 ff. 19 lines, per extensum, written in a Naskhi script in black ink, some words in red, some marginal notes. Contemporary half leather binding over marbled boards with fore-edge flap. A manuscript on Arabic prosody and metrics, forming a commentary on the well-known prosodic manual "Kitab al-'Arud al-Andalusi" by Abu al-Jaysh al-Ansari al-Qisti al-Andalusi (d. 626 H / 1229 CE). - The commentator Al-Qaysari, who flourished in Anatolia in the 14th century CE, both condensed and expanded on the work of Al-Jaysh, with the aim of providing a summary for students as well as adding his own perspective on the study of poetic metre and verse. He dedicated his effort to Emir Süleyman bin Tashun, an important political figure in Anatolia, who had commissioned the book. After a traditional introduction and long foreword, Al-Qaysari's work contains quotations from the original text, which he then juxtaposes with his own opinions. For his commentary, Al-Qaysari also drawn upon the standard works of Al-Khalil ibn Ahmad al-Farahidi (who first systematized the art of Arabic prosody) and Al-Khalil's student Al-Akhfash al-Avsat. - By tradition, Arabic prosody ('Arud) scans poetry not in terms of syllables (as in most Western languages), but in terms of vowelled and unvowelled letters, which are combined into larger units, which in turn make up feet. Sixteen types of metre are distinguished, some very common, others exceedingly rare. - The present copy was written in the early 18th century CE by a scribe who names himself as Ali ibn Muhammad ibn Ali ez-Zuhri es-Shirvani al Madani, a scholar who is known to have resided in Medina all his life. On the recto of the first leaf are a few later pencil notes which erroneously attribute the work's authorship to Al-Madani himself, though the copyist did indeed add several notes of his own supercommentary in the margins. - Binding a little rubbed; hinges chipped and weakened in places, interior very well preserved with minimal staining or smudging. A fine example. GAL I 310, 8 & S I 544, 9. Cf. Joan Maling, The Theory of Classical Arabic Metrics (1973). Ernest N. McCarus, "Identifying the Meters of Arabic Poetry", in: Al-’Arabiyya 16.1/2 (1983), pp. 57-83.

THE BRINK OF PEACE: The Israeli-Syrian Negotiations
Princeton NJ U.S.A.: Princeton University Press 1998. 1st Edition 1st Printing. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. A major casualty of the assassin's bullet that struck down Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin was a prospective peace accord between Syria and Israel. For the first time a negotiator who had unique access to Rabin as well as detailed knowledge of Syrian history and politics tells the inside story of the failed negotiations. His account provides a key to understanding not only U.S. diplomacy in the Middle East but also the larger Arab-Israeli peace process. During the period from 1992-1996 Itamar Rabinovich was Israel's ambassador to Washington and chief negotiator with Syria. In this book he looks back at the course of negotiations terms of which were known to a surprisingly small group of American Israeli and Syrian officials. The author portrays all sides and participants with remarkable flair and empathy as only a privileged player in the events could do. Raczynski, Edward.
Dziennik podrozy do Turcyi odbytey w roku MDCCCXIV. Breslau, Grass, Barth & Co., 1821.
Royal folio (375 x 488 mm). VII, (1), 204, VIII pp. With 64 plates (46 full-page, 17 half-page and 1 folding), mostly engraved after Ludwig Christian Fuhrmann, some after drawings by the author; 8 engraved text vignettes, 1 engraved tughra as headpiece; lithographed dedication. Modern half calf over contemporary marbled boards with printed title label on spine. First edition. - The very rare original edition of this important account of a journey through Turkey and Asia Minor. According to Brunet the finest publication ever to leave a Polish press, it was soon translated into German as "Malerische Reise in einigen Provinzen des Osmanischen Reichs" (last sold for £20,400 at Sotheby's 2004 Natural History and Travel Sale; no copy of the present original edition has appeared at German auctions during the last decades). - The Polish statesman Count Edward Raczynski (1786-1845), a patron of the arts and founder of the Raczynski Library in Poznan, travelled to Constantinople by way of Odessa during the months of July through November 1814. He was accompanied by the artist Ludwig Christian Fuhrmann (1783-1829), and most of the plates are engraved after his drawings. Raczynski also visited the Troad, the peninsula containing the ruins of Troy, of which a detailed description is given. This beautifully illustrated work is highly sought after for its many detailed engravings, including a folding map of Istanbul, illustrations of the ruins of Troy and Assos, the bay of Lesbos, a portrait of Sultan Muhammad IV, the mosque of the Sultan, etc. - In the present set, most of the plates are early or proofs prints, still lacking numbers and/or captions, which are frequently supplied in meticulous pencil calligraphy (in Polish and English). Leaves of pp. 1/2 and 3/4 transposed; the former bound showing page 2 before 1. Interior severely browned throughout as common. Tears to title and dedication repaired; a few edge flaws due to brittleness of paper. Only 5 copies of this original edition listed in library catalogues internationally (BL, BnF, LoC, Stabi Berlin, NL Sweden). Brunet IV, 20412. Weber 133 (note). Not in Atabey. Cf. Blackmer 1375 (1824 German edition).

Radziwill, Mikolaj Krzysztof.
Ierosolymitana Peregrinatio [...] Primum a Thoma Tretero custode Varmiensi ex Polonico sermone in Latinum translata, nunc varie aucta et correctius in lucem edita. Antwerp, Plantin / apud viduam et filios Joannis Moreti, 1614.
Small folio (ca. 210 x 314 mm). (10), 308, (12) pp. With engraved title-page and 5 full-page engraved illustrations in the text, as well as several woodcut initials and woodcut printer's device. Contemporary full vellum. All edges red. Second, improved Latin edition of this famous account of a pilgrimage to the Holy Land by the Polish Prince Mikolaj Krzysztof Radziwill (1549-1616), frequently translated and reprinted. First published in 1601; the present edition is corrected and expanded. - During his two-year journey from 1582 to 1584 Radziwill visited not only Palestine, but also Syria, Egypt, Crete, Cyprus, Italy and Greece. "Radziwill, in his account of the pilgrimage to the Holy Land and Egypt, described the ethnic diversity of the inhabitants of these lands. Critics underline the fact that his descriptions were ethnographic in character and quite objective. His 'Peregrynacja' was published in Latin and in Polish and apparently was quite widely read" (S. Grodz, Islam in Polish-Lithuanian/Ottoman Encounters, in: The Character of Christian-Muslim Encounter, Leiden 2015, p. 234). - The emblematic illustrations show sailboats in a fierce storm, such as Radziwill himself encountered, as well as appropriate Biblical quotations in banners decorated with maritime elements, but also a plan of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem (a separate appendix describes the prayers and songs there to be sung). - Binding somewhat brownstained and a little warped; upper hinge starting. Paper evenly browned throughout, occasional brownstains. Provenance: from the library of Duke Franciszek Maksymilian Ossolinski (1676-1756), Polish politician in the service of the exiled Stanislaus I. Leszczynski and an important collector, with his autograph ownership inscription "Ex Libris F. M. Ducis de Tencryn-Ossolinski", dated Lunéville, 12 Sept. 1741, to front pastedown, and a three-line handwritten French quotation from St. Augustine to lower pastedown. In all a good copy of a widely received work; this edition rarely seen at auction. Weber II, 204. Röhricht p. 208, no. 787. Estreicher XXVI, 90. Brunet IV, 1087. Graesse VI, 17. Baumgarten, Hall. Bibl. VI, 65f. Ebert II, 18596. Tobler 83. Cf. Aboussouan 769.

Rainer Ferdinand, Archduke of Austria (1827-1913).
View of Jerusalem. No place, 1844.
C. 280 x 180 mm. Pencil and opaque white on brown paper, signed at bottom left: "Rainer | May 1844", captioned at right: "Jerusalem gesehen vom Tempel des Salomon". Matted. Depicts the south-western corner of the Temple Mount (with Dome of the Rock, Al-Aqsa Mosque, and hinting at the recently rediscovered Robinson's Arch). Archduke Rainer, one of the most eminent figures during the rule of Emperor Franz Josef, also was a talented landscape painter and lithographer (cf. Fuchs II, 37). Although he served in political functions (he was Austria's first constitutional Minister-President from 1861 to 1865), his heart always belonged to the arts and sciences. An honorary member of the Imperial and Royal Academy of Sciences, the variously talented Archduke was one of the Habsburg family's most remarkable collectors: his Viennese library encompassed some 40,000 volumes (not counting the inherited library in Hernstein Castle), and the "El Fayum" papyrus collection acquired by him, containing a treasure of 180,000 papyri now stored in the National Library, is regarded as "the greatest of its kind in the world" (Unesco, Memory of the world, Nominated Documentary Heritage). - Rainer, son of the brother of Emperor Franz, spent his youth under the tutelage of his artistically inclined parents and excellent teachers, and it was common for the young Austrian Archdukes in the first half of the 19th century to be instructed in draughtsmanship by the great Chamber painters of the time. The Holy Land was not an uncommon station on the tour of contemporary Chamber painters: Eduard Gurk even died there in 1841 on a study tour. - The quality of the present illustration clearly surpasses that of Rainer's known student drawings (two, dated 1839, are preserved at the National Library, Bildarchiv und Fideikommissbibliothek, PK 3050 2 and 3). The mature talent of the Archduke, only seventeen years old in 1844, is especially evident in comparison with the works of other members of the Imperial family, many of which also dabbled in landscape painting (their works are preserved in the so-called Dilettante cassettes in the Albertina).
