DUGUET, Docteur Firmin
First edition, signed by the author. This important work evokes in a first part the pilgrimage from the religious and social point of view (history, religious obligations, the caravans, the Hedjaz railway, the automobile, the seaway, the religious ceremonies, the visit to Medina, Shiite pilgrimages) ; in a second part, doctor Duguet evokes the health point of view : pilgrimages before 1866, the great cholera epidemic of 1865, the various international health conferences and the various epidemics, pilgrimages from 1905 to 1914, then from 1914 until 1924 and the fall of King Hussein. Finally, in a third part, he discusses modern Hedjaz (Ibn Séoud and the Wahabites), pilgrimages from 1925 to 1930 and the necessary health policy in Hedjaz. Fair condition (cover a little rubbed with two spots on the back and second cover, foxing). A major work for the history of the pilgrimage to Mecca but also for the history of international health conferences, which from the outset were very interested in the epidemic risk associated with the hajj. Early Plan of Jerusalem
Das alte und neue Jerusalem, Historisch und Topographisch Betrachtet von Dr. G. von Ekendahl. [The old and new Jerusalem, Historically and Topographically Viewed by Dr. G. von Ekendahl.]
Volume 25 complete. 8vo. 17 pages pertaining to the above mentioned account. Plus a fold-out plan of Jerusalem, measuring 31.5cm x 24cm. Text is in German. This volume contains several additional accounts of contemporary discovery and debate. Bound in contemporary continental European paper boards. Some light foxing throughout, otherwise in very good condition and internally bright and crisp. Exceptional plan of Jerusalem highlights historically significant places including mount Olive, where Jesus taught the apostles, the Lord's Prayer; the place where Jesus weeps over Jerusalem; the place where the disciples slept; the Garden of Gethsemane where Judas kiss Jesus after the Last Supper, and where Jesus sweat blood; the place where Saint Stephen was stoned; burial place of Catholics; mount Zion, where the Last Supper took place; prison of Apostle Peter, and the place where Jesus was scourged and executed by Roman soldiers. This is a complete volume of an obscure and rare geographical and scientific journal, titled "Allgemeine Geographische Ephemeriden", which issued fifty volumes from 1798-1816, and which encompassed critical contemporary topics of geography and astronomy. Adam Christian Gaspari and Franz Xaver von Zach were editors of this important scientific journal. A primary resource, seldom found complete and in original condition.

Eyles Irwin; Arabia
Personal Account and Series of Adventures in Arabia First Edition 1780
1780. IRWIN Eyles. A Series of Adventures in the Course of a Voyage up the Red Sea on the Coast of Arabia and Egypt; and of a Route through the Deserts of Thebais Hitherto Unknown to the European Traveller in the year MDCCLXXVII in Letters to a Lady. Dublin: Sleater Whitestone Potts Colles Wilson Jenkins Flin Etc. 1780. 4to 576 pp. With the original attached fold-out map of The Red Sea wants 2 other maps. Antique full leather binding with gold inlay on the spine.

First edition of Eyles Irwin's exciting personal account and observations in Arabia and Egypt in the 18th century. Irwin was born in Calcutta and served with the East India Company. Irwin was dismissed from the East India Company in 1776 and traveled through Arabia and Egypt on his return to England to seek redress. He left India in 1777 for England when his ship was captured by pirates. From Cossier he was forced to cross the desert to Suez and then on to Luxor Cairo and Alexandria. His journey lasted eleven months. Irwin's narrative is comprised of letters to an unnamed "Lady" which provides the reader with candid observations of the convergence of European and Arab cultures in the late 1700's. The letters detail the journey to various ports cities and deserts of modern day Saudi Arabia. This book was published in 1780 a time when European exploration and travel was at its peak. The Arab world during the 1700's was considered mysterious enchanting and exotic thus attracting European travelers like Irwin. Tidrick remarks that Irwin's "travel narrative of 1780 was a long recitation of Bedouin treachery." Includes two poems by Irwin 'Ode to the dessert' and 'Ode to the Nile.' The title panel on the spine remains the reverse board was detached and has been sewn back on with dark thread. There is a 3 1/2" split on the front hinge although the hinge is still strong. Corners bumped and worn with the top and base of the spine worn with some chipping. The inside pages are very good. Overall in good condition. Blackmer Collection 865; Atabey Collection 609. unknown
