L'auteur s'exprime sous forme épistolaire : les relations sont adressées sous forme de lettres au prince Pierre Soltykoff, et forment une bonne description de l'Inde anglaise juste avant la révolte des Cipayes.L'originale était parue en 1848, et le texte fut maintes fois réédité.
