His book narrates a vision of heaven and hell which Viraf saw in an inspired dream or vision. Most of the brief book is given here, except where the details of hell become too bestial, too coarsely sordid for modern taste. The entire vision is truly Dantesque; and while we do not know its age, we can say confidently that it is several centuries older than the work of Dante. So profound, even to this day, is the Parsis' faith in the reality of Viraf's vision, that when the work is read in their religious assemblies, the men weep and the women cry out in horror over its pictures of the damned. "Throughout the history of the Ottoman Empire its relations with Iran were contentious. This is especially true for the Safavid period. A clear indication of the nature of this contention is the repetitive wars and treatise between the parties. Inevitably, on both sides of the divide there has been considerable research on this period and issues involved. However, no matter how valuable these works are, they are not involved in a dialogue and research has mostly been one sided, with the scholars of the other side. A meaningful dialogue on the other hand, requires that the scholars, of both sides, consult the works of each other and pay attention to the views of their counterparts. This, inevitably requires translation of the works of differing parties. Such works would promote mutual understanding and the discovery of the realities that should supplant partisan discourse. It is well known that without critical examination of the historical facts we would end up with stories that might sound good to one side of the divide but add little to historiography. Religion-state relations in Turkey and Iran: Ideologies, institutions and international influences.
New English Paperback. Demy 8vo. (21 x 14 cm). In English. 312 p. This book compares religion-state relations in Turkey and Iran by adopting a historical perspective. It explores the various historical trajectories, international developments and cultural elements that generated distinct religion-state relations in these two national contexts. It argues that the main determinants of this relation derive from the varying degrees of institutionalisation of religious establishments. Historical analysis reveals that the Turkish state inherited a type of state tradition in which religion was strongly controlled and incorporated to the state structure. Conversely, in Iran, especially after the Safavid period, state tradition was marked by the relative autonomy of religious establishments from the state. The influence of international factors on religion-state dynamics is also analyzed. Direct international factors are found to have been more influential in the Iranian case whereas in the Turkish case indirect factors played a more decisive role. This book also argues that it is misleading to point to differences between Shi a and Sunni sects in an essentialist manner to explain the different paths that these two countries followed.
