Istanbul an urban history. Byzantion, Constantinopolis, Istanbul.
Fine English Original bdg. HC. 4to. (28 x 22 cm). In English. 485 p., color and b/w ills. Istanbul an urban history. Byzantion, Constantinopolis, Istanbul. First Edition. This is not a book on archaeology, nor, although it lays particular stress on the architecture, an architectural history of Istanbul. It is an attempt to present the urban history of a world-city called Istanbul, Constantinople, Byzantion in different periods of its history. It delineates historical circumstances, or sudden ruptures, but above all, it attempts to present this unique world-city as experienced by its citizens and visitors, and as imagined by the world at large. While recent researches on the topography, history and monuments of the city are integrated in the text, my intention is to present the essence of the historical image of Istanbul contextually within physical, social and cultural framework. I have no intention of breaking new ground on the topography of the city, but I wish to convey the terms of a unique human experience in one of the longest surviving cities of the world, built in a most beautiful and enchanting landscape. The great Byzantine scholar R. Janin speaks of various "visages" of the city composed through the rhythms of life or caprices of the emperors. Most of this intricate relationships created in millennia between men, site, and artifact are gone and difficult to visualize. In writing this urban history, while I try to remain objective, I know that I create a literary model using as reference the least changed of the historical elements, the surviving monuments, the site with its basic shape and articulations, and contemporary accounts -not necessarily sources of hard facts, but as primary expressions, reactions and emotions. Thus tryingto keep myself away, as far as possible, from speculation and methods of criminal fiction, I have delineated the history of this grandiose, dramatic and often cruel city of Istanbul

DOGAN KUBAN.
Ottoman's Istanbul. 112 monuments symbolising the Ottoman capital Istanbul. Translated into English by Adair Mill.
New English Paperback. Pbo. Cr. 8vo. (22 x 12 cm). In English. Ills. 248 p. Istanbul is a city born from the sea. Starting a colony of Megaran Byzantium settled here 2,700 years the pagans, Christian, and Muslim societies who settled here not only built their cities according to the unique topography of the land, but also -to varying degrees- preserved the monuments of the civilizations that had preceded them. However, when people settled in the coastal areas, considering going as far as 8500 BC, the date of last finds. This urge to preserve has thus created a demonstrated continuity within the historical physiometry of the city. The urban order that had been Constantinople was continued in the Ottoman era. With the passing of hands, however, monumental mosques began to appear in the earlier Roman forums. A total of 112 of the best monumental buildings of Istanbul were selected for this book. The first selection was made based on the monuments remaining in the inner city, an area first delineated by Septimus Severus, and then expanded to include the districts added by Constantine and then, later, by Theodosius. This inner city area was also greatly expanded by the Ottomans as the districts after Beyazit were augmented to include the avenue stretching to Topkapi that acts as the borders of the lands dividing the Marmara Sea from the Golden Horn. In doing so, for the purposes of this book the iner city was thus classified by these former borders into four distinct districts. The districts of Galata, Eyu?p, and those lining the Bosphorus Strait, became the fifth sixth, and seventh districts to be covered in this work, while the city's Asian-side districts of Üsku?dar, Haydarpasa, and Kadiköy became the eighth district. The monuments of Ottoman's Istanbul that the reader will discover in this book have been thus presented according to eight separate districts, and all have been listed in alphabetic order.

The Turkish hayat house.
Fine English Original cloth bdg. 4to. (34 x 24 cm). In English. 279 p., color and b/w ills. The Turkish hayat house. Türk 'Hayat'li evi. The Turkish House is both a picturesque image and a historical fact. Since the sixteenth century, descriptions of travelers and the engravings and paintings of western artists depicting Ottoman lands introduced to the world images of a different urban tradition and the existence of a different dwelling concept. Europeans regarded the physiognomy of the Ottoman capital, Istanbul, and other great cities of the Empire such as Edirne, Bursa, Izmir, Konya, Amasya and lesser towns from the Balkans to Iran and Mesopotamia with a mixed feeling of wonder and disdain. The Turkish urbanscape - the khans and caravansaries, covered bazaars, Turkish baths, the wooden houses with their lattice-screenned windows and bold overhaning projections aligned along the narrow and tortuous streets, well-lit and lavishly-decorated rooms in which dignified men in magnificent robes sat in characteristic postures on low divans, women of the harem looking over the streets from behind wooden screens - all these idiosyncratic images of a preindustrial society, idealized, romanticized and distorted by narrators and artists, excited the imagination of the western public about the nonchalant life of the Turks and the so-called Orient.

DOKTOR FRIÇ [FRITSCH], [sic. NACI ISMAIL PELISTER also known as HABIL ADEM], (1893-1949), [AND COMMISSION].
[EARLY ANTI-KURDISH PROPAGANDA BY THE YOUNG TURKS] Kürdler: Siyasi ve içtimai tedkikat. [i.e. Kurds: A politic and social examination].
Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) In contemporary black cloth. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 17 cm). In Ottoman script (Old Turkish with Arabic letters). Occasionally minor stains and fading on pages. Otherwise a good copy. 384 p. It is a rare book written after the Constitutional Monarchy at the request of the Unionists to make propaganda about Kurds. It is one of the early detached texts about Kurds written in the Ottoman period. Upon the request of the Ittihad ve Terakki [i.e. Union and Progress] leaders, he began to work in 1912 for the newly established National Security Organization (Teskilât-i Mahsusa). He then continued his intelligence work with the IAMM and AMMU, in the name of which he did his fieldwork on the Anatolian Kurds and Turcoman (Turkmen) tribes. Habil Adem's (his pseudonym means in English 'Abel Adam') writing reflect -even more openly than those of his colleague Baha Said- the unionist ambition to collect the data considered necessary for its politics of social and demographic engineering, such as information on basic demographic realities, as well as social and cultural aspects. The obvious aim of this publication was to create public knowledge favorable to the nationalization project. His book on the Kurds, printed in 1918, immediately after WW 1, under the pseudonym of a fictitious German orientalist (Dr. Friç), allegedly only translated by Habil Adem, elaborated on a thesis that would gain leverage in the early Turkish Republic and become very prominent in the 1930s, namely that the Kurds were actually Turks and the Kurdish as an independent language did not exist. In the book's section on the religion of the Kurds, he makes two distinctions such as Muslim and non-Muslim Kurds and Sunni and Shiite Muslim Kurds. (Source: Writing Religion: The Making of Turkish Alevi Islam; Dressler, Marcus). Pelister worked in the translation office of the General Directorate of Security since 1908 and in the Turkmen Branch of the General Directorate of Tribes and Immigrants from 1913, and he personally assigned him to Talat Pasha, (1874-1921). He was very good at speaking English, German, and French languages, thus, he was involved in researches related to the Kurdish and Turkmen tribes with some delegations in Ottoman Turkey in Asia. The German original of this book never existed, neither did Dr. Fritsch from the Berlin Academy of Science. Years later, Celadet Bedirxan, a Kurdish intellectual, explained the mistakes that Naci Ismail made intentionally or unknowingly on the Kurdish culture, population, history, folklore, and language, with the letters he wrote to Mustafa Kemal and drew Mustafa Kemal's attention. This book was written probably by a commission with corrigenda and footnotes by Pelister. The book generally focuses on the historical geography of the Kurds. There is an effort to Turkify in the part that talks about the origins of the Kurds. In the introduction, detailed information about Iranian and Iraqi Kurds is given and Sharafnâma is criticized. Although detailed information is available on many Kurdish tribes (Leks, Sividis, Arukhs, etc) in Anatolia and Mesopotamia, most of these are dubious. Only three institutional copies in OCLC: 977638243 (University of Toronto Robarts Library), 949451620 (Bogaziçi Library), and 164856325 (Bayerische Staatsbibliothek of Germany).; Özege 11517.; TBTK 11113. DOKTOR NAMI, (A Turkish/ Ottoman Freemason and doctor), (19.-20th century).
[MANUSCRIPT] Ma.:.luk [Masonluk] hakkinda duygu ve düsüncelerim. [i. e. My feelings and thoughts on Freemasonry].
Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Original manuscript on freemasonry. 28x21 cm. In Ottoman script (Turkish with Arabic letters). 3 p. Chipped on margins, folded. Otherwise a very good manuscript. Written on a paper watermarked "Labor: Extra Strong Bank". It includes "How should a Mason be and act?", it gives some hints on the last Ottoman Freemasonry. The history of Freemasonry in Turkey stretches back to the 18th century under Ottoman imperial rule. The first lodge in Turkey was probably established around 1721 in Istanbul by Levantines. Although Freemasonry in Turkey can be traced into the 18th century, for much of that time it was limited to lodges under the jurisdiction of foreign grand lodges, and there was no independent Turkish Grand Lodge. This changed in 1856 when the first Turkish Grand Lodge was established. Sultan Murad V was a member of the lodge, becoming the first and only Ottoman sultan to join. This first Grand Lodge was banned in 1876 by Murad's successor Sultan Abdulhamit Han. The Grand Lodge came back in 1909 in Istanbul under a new administration. Because the Grand Lodge was used to operate in secret, it was closed again in 1922, only to be opened in the year 1925 again. In 1935 the Grand Lodge has closed again. As a result of the repeated closures, the former Grand Lodge and its members were reluctant to support Kemal Atatürk's reformist policies. (Source: Wikipedia). No information about Dr. Nami.
