Bergama/Pergamon bietet seinen Besuchern die seltene Gelegenheit, vier Jahrtausende Siedlungs- und Stadtgeschichte an der Schnittstelle von Anatolien und der Ägäis im Kontext eines modernen urbanen Gefüges zu erleben. Als sich im zweiten Jahrtausend vor Christus auf dem Stadtberg von Pergamon Menschen ansiedelten und eine erste Befestigung errichteten, begründeten sie zugleich eine nahezu ungebrochene Kontinuität, die über die hellenistische Residenzstadt der Attaliden, die Metropole der römischen Kaiserzeit sowie die byzantinischen und osmanischen Landstädte bis heute andauert. Diese historische, kulturelle und städtebauliche Vielschichtigkeit bewog die UNESCO 2014, Pergamon und seine vielschichtige Kulturlandschaft in die Liste der Welterbestätten aufzunehmen. Die besondere Aufmerksamkeit der Forschung ebenso wie des Tourismus gilt weiterhin vor allem den herausragenden antiken Bauresten, die seit 140 Jahren wissenschaftlich untersucht werden. Doch kann Bergama auch mit bedeutenden Bauten der osmanischen Epoche aufwarten, die von den Anfängen im 14. Jahrhundert bis zur multiethnischen Kleinstadt des späten 19. Jahrhunderts reichen. Die architekturgeschichtlich interessanten ersten Jahrzehnte der türkischen Republik haben weitere bedeutende Spuren hinterlassen, die heute vom rapiden Um- und Ausbau Bergamas stark in Mitleidenschaft gezogen werden. Um so wichtiger ist es, daß auch das nach-antike Kulturerbe im modernen Stadtgebiet wissenschaftlich dokumentiert und publiziert wird. Dieses Ziel verfolgt der vorliegende Band in der Reihe MIRAS, die Grundlagenforschungen zu Denkmalpflege und Kulturerhalt in der Türkei ebenso umfaßt wie aktuelle Diskurse oder konzeptionelle Studien. Das aufwendige mehrsprachige Konzept der Reihe hat sich dabei aufs Neue als sinnvoll erwiesen: Die erstmalige systematische Erfassung und analytische Gliederung des reichen Bestandes an Profan- und Sakralbauten im Stadtgebiet von Bergama soll den vielfältigen türkischen und deutschen Forschungstraditionen zur Verfügung werden, die sich mit Bergama/Pergamon und der Stadtkultur Kleinasiens beschäftigen. Vor diesem Hintergrund gilt unser erster Dank Demet Ulusoy Binan sowie ihren Mitautoren Mevlüde Kapti und Binnur Kiraç, die mit dem Projekt zur Inventarisierung der städtischen Denkmäler in Bergama über Jahre hinweg Großes geleistet und die Erforschung von Bergama/Pergamon wesentlich bereichert haben. Für das DAI als Träger der Pergamongrabung im Auftrag des Ministeriums für Kultur und Tourismus der Republik Türkei ist es Ehre und Freude zugleich, daß diese wichtige Studie in einer Reihe der Abteilung Istanbul erscheint. Wesentlichen Anteil daran hat unser ehemaliger Zweiter Direktor Martin Bachmann, der das Erscheinen dieses Bandes, den er mit Nachdruck gefördert hat, leider nicht mehr erleben durfte. Seinen Part haben unsere Mitarbeiterinnen Burcu Akan und Seçil Tezer Altay mit großem Engagement übernommen. Für die Übersetzung des türkischen Originaltextes ins Deutsche gebührt Heike Offen-Eren und Dilek Zaptçioglu Dank und Anerkennung. An der Finanzierung der Drucklegung des Bandes haben sich die Stadtverwaltung Bergama und die Kulturstiftung BERKSAV (Bergama Kültür ve Sanat Vakfi) maßgeblich beteiligt, wofür wir dem Bürgermeister von Bergama Mehmet Gönenç und der Vorsitzenden von BERKSAV Muharrem Esen sehr zu Dank verpflichtet sind. Auch in dieser Hinsicht ist der vorliegende Band ein gelungenes Beispiel für die türkisch-deutsche Kooperation in der Erforschung und Bewahrung des kulturellen Welterbes auf dem Boden der Türkei. Sadberk Hanim Museum opened on 14 October 1980 as Turkey's first private museum and this year celebrates its thirty-third anniversary. The collection of Turkish and Islamic artefacts gathered by Sadberk Koç formed the original nucleus of the museum collection, which has since been greatly expanded by donations and purchases. With the purchase of the Hüseyin Kocabas collection in 1983 the museum branched out into the field of antiquities. The Archaeological Section of Sadberk Hanim Museum is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. The collection consisting of nearly 7000 objects ranges from the Late Neolithic Age to the Byzantine Period, making it possible to trace the course of successive Anatolian civilizations through their material culture. Archaeological Section of the museum has steadily grown over the years, with the purchase of rare items from overseas auctions and the acquisition of registered collections. Sadberk Hanim Museum Archaeological Section will have been open for 25 years in 2013 and it was decided to celebrate this anniversary with an exhibition entitled Traces of Ancient Ages, presenting 150 works that throw light on the periods to which they belong.

Research on regional studies in archaeology has accelerated in the past 20 years and changed the archaeological discourse in a fundamental way. This recent perspective influenced the archaeological perception favorably in terms of evaluating the settlements with a holistic view, assessment of central places with their rural territories that cannot be separated from each other. The idea of organizing a symposium on this subject comes from our belief in the importance of removing ourselves of the understanding resulting from handling the settlement in Anatolian archeology for a long period of time, stripped from its dynamics and our belief in the importance of presenting new researches. "Throughout the history of the Ottoman Empire its relations with Iran were contentious. This is especially true for the Safavid period. A clear indication of the nature of this contention is the repetitive wars and treatise between the parties. Inevitably, on both sides of the divide there has been considerable research on this period and issues involved. However, no matter how valuable these works are, they are not involved in a dialogue and research has mostly been one sided, with the scholars of the other side. A meaningful dialogue on the other hand, requires that the scholars, of both sides, consult the works of each other and pay attention to the views of their counterparts. This, inevitably requires translation of the works of differing parties. Such works would promote mutual understanding and the discovery of the realities that should supplant partisan discourse. It is well known that without critical examination of the historical facts we would end up with stories that might sound good to one side of the divide but add little to historiography. Obviously there is a need for such historical works. Composed to fifteen research papers by different Turkish scholars, the present volume hopes to fill such a vacuum; introduce the works of Turkish scholars to the Iranian public and academia, and shed new light on Ottoman-Safavid relations.".

This two-volume compendium the history of mathematical literature contains a foreword, an introduction, the main part, a bibliography and indices. The book contains the names of 1423 authors whose life periods are known and 288 scholars whose life periods are unknown. The book aims to give bio-bibliographic information on mathematicians, astronomers, geographers and other scholars who flourished in Asia, Africa and Europe from the 7th century until the 19th century. Each item comprises a short biography of the author, a list of his works and manuscripts, the library call numbers, translations, researches and different editions of each work. In regard to non-extant manuscripts, the reader is referred to the source that contains information on the works. The items contain information on the works about mathematics, astronomy, mechanics, physics, music, mathematical geography, meteorology, encyclopedias and works on history of science. At the end of the book there are two supplements that are arranged alphabetically. The first comprises the list and information on scholars whose life periods are unknown. The second supplement contains the list of anonymous manuscripts located in various libraries all over the world. There are two indexes: the first contains the names of authors and the second the titles of works.

This is a comprehensive book on the history of the modern university which emerged as part of the cultural modernization process that followed the Tanzimat reforms. It records and evaluates on basis of first-hand sources the stages of formation of the university from realisation of its concept until its institution as the University of Istanbul. It is the result of many years of research by Prof. Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu. the formation of a European-type university represented a transformation in Ottoman cultural and educational life. in addition to building the university's legal, administrative and financial structures, it necessitated policy decisions on such subjects as the university model to be followed, the curricula and the faculty. The present work reviews the process extensively. It is comprised of three books laid out in two volumes. The first book examines the emergence of the idea of the modern university beginning from the period of the Tanzimat and its establishment after three attempts, and analyses its evolution in stages, until the 1933 university reform. the second book looks into the development of the Darülfünun in the light of evolving concepts and trends in cultural, social and scholarly life. As to the third book, it describes in detail the development of each of the Faculties of Science, Letters, Theology, Law and Medicine with respect to curricula, faculty, institutes affiliated, among other aspects of their activities. The findings of this comprehensive survey show that advances were made in both western-and Eastern-oriented geographical sciences throughout the Ottoman period. Their parallel progress continued until Western-type geographical science became dominant in the 19th century following the establishment of universities which included geography in their curricula. The main center of geographical research was Istanbul.

[Exhibition cataalogue]. [With a CD]. On the 86th anniversary of the Republic: Ankara: City of the Black Calpac, 1923-1938 was unveiled. The exhibition told the story of Ankara, the capital that became the image of the Republic with the "Parliament" at its center and the exemplary lifeworld of the national idea; in doing so, it focused on Ankara's architecture, its social life and its modernized look that were shaped by and around Atatürk. Through photographs, documents and objects, the exhibition showcased Ankara, a city founded on the clashing symbols of the Ottoman Empire and the Republic, and its architectural elements ranging from the Ottoman residential fabric to the modern urban sprawl of the Early Republic; it recreated the exhilaration that accompanied the founding of the Republic and the daily life that was shaped around Atatürk himself. Ankara: the City of the Black Calpac, 1923-1938 narrated the story of the founding days of the Republic and the construction of Ankara, the new capital, as an exemplary city.
