‎Camera Ottomana: Photography and modernity in the Ottoman Empire, 1840-1914.‎

‎New English Paperback. Pbo. Large roy. 8vo. (25 x 18 cm). English Edition. 256 p., color and b/w ills. Camera Ottomana: Photography and modernity in the Ottoman Empire, 1840-1914. From its birth in 1839, photography has participated in modernity as much as it has symbolized it. Its capacity to record and display and its claim to accuracy and truth intricately linked the new technology to the dynamism of the modern world. The Ottoman Empire embraced photography with great enthusiasm. In fact, the impact and meaning of photography were compounded with the thrust of modernization and westernization of the Tanzimat movement. By the turn of the century, photography in the Ottoman lands had become a standard feature of everyday life, of public media, and of the state apparatus. This volume explores some of the most striking aspects of the close connection between photography and modernity with a particular focus on the Ottoman Empire. Much of the material concerns the display of modernity through photography, as was so often the case in the photographs and albums commissioned by the Sultan to showcase his empire for Western audiences. Nevertheless, modernity was often embedded in the photographic act, transforming it into a common and mundane practice. Be it in the form of images disseminated through the illustrated press, postcards sent out to family members or anonymous collectors, portraits presented to friends and acquaintances, or pictures taken of employees and convicts, photography had started to invade practically every sphere of public and private life. The visual world we live in today was born some 150 years ago. Camera Ottomana is both a homage to, and a critical assessment of, the local dimension of one of the most potent and transformative technological inventions of the recent past.‎

‎Wall, arch, dome: Byzantine Istanbul in the eyes of Ottoman photographers.= Sur, kemer, kubbe: Osmanli fotografçilarinin gözüyle Bizans Istanbulu. [Exhibition catalogue]. Text: Samih Rifat.‎

‎New English Paperback. Pbo. 4to. (28 x 24 cm). In English and Turkish. 172 p., color and b/w ills. Wall, arch, dome: Byzantine Istanbul in the eyes of Ottoman photographers.= Sur, kemer, kubbe: Osmanli fotografçilarinin gözüyle Bizans Istanbulu. [Exhibition catalogue]. Text: Samih Rifat. One of the most outstanding characteristics of Istanbul's Byzan-tine monuments, as captured by Ottoman photographers, is their role as priceless documents in the city's history. The period between the second half of the 19th century and the turn of the 20th century is marked by profound changes in Istanbul with respect to urban structure, historical texture and monuments. A careful eye readily notices the considerable transformations spread over a hundred, hundred and fifty years in Istanbul city walls, Galata Tower, Hagia Sophia and the Hippodrome area. These photographs are replete with valuable clues for today's researchers, restorers, architectures and urban planners. Nonetheless, there is something beyond the obvious in these images: Istanbul's remaining city walls, arches, and domes of a far away past continue to survive in another form of existence in these old photographs, which reflect an age closer to us in time, yet just as rapidly vanished. The discolored surfaces permeating an indescribable sense of the old add another layer, another epoch to the historical richness of the city. Comprised of a selection from the Suna and Inan Kiraç Foundation Old Istanbul Photographs Collection, Wall Arch Dome ventures us into a journey in the same milieu and in a different time dimension. Yet, on this occasion, we find ourselves in an Istanbul more ancient, more distant than the Republican or Ottoman days; it is a Byzantine Istanbul of monuments, ruins and almost imperceptible traces from thousands of years past.‎

‎Bizans döneminde Ephesos.‎

‎New English Original bdg. 242 p. In Turkish. Color ills. Bizans döneminde Ephesos. Witnesses to a bygone culture ancient wall paintings provide direct access to the ancient way of life, and become a means of communication between their commissioner and their audience. In Ephesos for a long time wall painting was treated as a second-class citizen, as a secondary product of the excavated monuments. The remains of wall paintings at Ephesos, however, extend far beyond Terrace Houses which can be easily visited today. With this book the remnants of wall paintings in Ephesos are for the first time studied and presented in detail, claiming a new chronology and dating. From the Terrace Houses to the Grotto of St. Paul the work covers a long time span from the Hellenistic period through medieval Byzantine period, enriched with numerous colour figures.‎

"The exhibition of the Museum and Mosque of Yakovali Hasan Pasha can be divided into two major parts. One of them is the restored historical building of the mosque in which we tried to suggest the inner atmosphere of a Turkish mosque by the help of an interiorlike solution. The other part of the exhibition takes places in those basement rooms of the today's County Hospital that join the mosque. The relics of the foundation walls of the former Mawlawi dervish monastery, that came to light during the excavation works, and the partly reconstructed details of the porch of the mosque exhibited here too...".‎

‎An Ottoman Protocol Register. Containing ceremonies from 1736 to 1808: BEO Sadaret Defterleri 350 in the Prime Ministry Ottoman State Archives, Istanbul.‎

‎New English Original bdg. HC. Roy. 8vo. (24 x17 cm). In English. [xLiv], 223 p., ills., in English; [+] 144 p. facsimile of the BEO 350 Protocol Register in Ottoman script. The BEO 350 protocol register edited here is part of the Sublime Porte Archives series of the Prime Ministry Ottoman State Archives in Istanbul. The register covers a number of ceremonies held on various occasions from 1736 to 1808 and primarily concerned with accession ceremonies, funerals and, most of all, the reception of envoys. This edition of the BEO 350 is accompanied by an introduction, a synoptic list of ceremonies, appendices, and indexes. The introduction examines various aspects of Ottoman ceremonies, particularly those of a diplomatic nature, and includes a section on the gifts and offerings exchanged by the Ottoman administration and foreign envoys. As briefly discussed in the introduction, ceremonies contribute, albeit modestly, to the validation of a regime's political legitimacy and to its smooth functioning. When trying to determine the relationship between ceremonial rites and political power, the lofty symbolism of ceremonies needs to be interpreted with great care. Thus, detailed descriptions such as those found in protocol registers are extremely valuable, indeed indispensable, for a solid interpretation.‎
