‎19. asirda Istanbul haritasi.‎

‎Very Good Turkish Modern cloth bdg. 4to. (30 x 24 cm). In Turkish. 27 p. text; 21 numerous map feuilles in Ottoman script and modern Turkish. 19. asirda Istanbul haritasi. Ekrem Hakki Ayverdi was raised at a time in which Istanbul was undergoing its late Ottoman-early Republican period. Apart from his persona as an engineer-architect, restorer, and architectural historian, he was a collector passionately dedicated to Ottoman art. Undertaking the construction of different public buildings in Istanbul, Bursa and Edirne, as well as the restoration of many architectural works, Ayverdi not only brought together the most select and refined works of Ottoman art, which had begun to lose its prestige amidst the changing values of high culture in the time he lived, but he also paid particular attention to their conservation and preservation. Ayverdi's two seminal corpuses that study Ottoman architecture from its early days until the end of the Mehmed II era, as well as its examples in Roumelia, continue to maintain their place as the most important reference books for those working in this field. This is a detailed research on a 19th century map of Istanbul city.‎

‎Everyday life in Istanbul: Social historical essays on people, culture and spatial relations.‎

‎New New English Original bdg. Dust wrapper. 4to. (28 x 22 cm). In English. 361 p., b/w and color ills. Everyday life in Istanbul: Social historical essays on people, culture and spatial relations. Third Edition. On the map of human existence. Istanbul throughout the age of empire represented the administrative power center. Rome, Byzantium and the Ottoman Empire each took its place in history as a ring of civilization that formed around this center. To view history from this perspective means to read the story of humanity in its pages and, in a sense, to rediscover each time this dazzling star that shone in the skies of Anatolia, the Balkans and the Mediterranean. As mankind discovered Istanbul, it also discovered itself as a passionate traveler on the road leading back to its own past. Istanbul today is a treasurehouse where all our lost values are carefully preserved. A compass for our social identity that has lost its way, a touchstonefor our decaying aesthetic taste, a trustworthy scale for our degenerating sense of justice - Istanbul can assume all these roles while at the same time generously offering us a human experience and store of knowledge capable of answering every question put to it. Everyday Life in Istanbul is a collection of striking images along a journey back to the roots of the Turks' social identity. A work embracing the history of an imperial city in a plane where Man, Culture and Space relate to each other, it is a noteworthy example of the new historiography, which sets up a balance among the social sciences. With its unique style and its theoretical framework set against a multidimensional background extending from politics to culture, from architecture to literature, it is at the same time a contemporary historian's gift to our city.‎

‎Choreographies of Shared Sacred Sites: Religion, Politics, and Conflict Resolution‎

‎8vo, hardcover, pp.428. This anthology explores the dynamics of shared religious sites in Turkey, the Balkans, Palestine/Israel, Cyprus, and Algeria, indicating where local and national stakeholders maneuver between competition and cooperation, coexistence and conflict. Contributors probe the notion of coexistence and the logic that underlies centuries of "sharing," exploring when and why sharing gets interrupted-or not-by conflict, and the policy consequences. These essays map the choreographies of shared sacred spaces within the framework of state-society relations, juxtaposing a site's political and religious features and exploring whether sharing or contestation is primarily religious or politically motivated. Although religion and politics are intertwined phenomena, the contributors to this volume understand the category of "religion" and the "political" as devices meant to distinguish between the theological and confessional aspects of religion and the political goals of groups. Their comparative approach better represents the transition in some cases of sites into places of hatred and violence, while in other instances they remain noncontroversial. The essays clearly delineate the religious and political factors that contribute to the context and causality of conflict at these sites and draw on history and anthropology to shed light on the often rapid switch from relative tolerance to distress to peace and calm.‎

‎New English Paperback. Pbo. Cr. 8vo. (20 x 14 cm). In English. 243 p. " Eli Shaul (1916-2004) was a Turkish Jew. After spending his childhood in the colorful Balat neighborhood, he received a superb education at the prestigious Istanbul Erkek Lisesi (Istanbul Men's High School), the University of Istanbul, and the Reserve Officers Training School in Ankara. While still in high school, he began keeping a diary, which he continued during his college years and the time he spent serving as an army dentist in eastern Turkey. Those diaries, contained in this book, provide rare insights into what life was like for minorities - and particularly for Jews - in Turkey during the nineteen thirties and forties. Atatürk's Republic, which most of them ardently supported, had raised their hopes of at last being accepted as fully equal Turkish citizens in every way, but those hopes were cruelly dashed when discrimination and anti-Semitism continued, and even worsened, especially after Atatürk's death in 1938. Not surprisingly, most of Turkey's Jews immigrated to Israel after it won its independence in 1948. That exodus provoked harsh criticism of the Jews in the Turkish press, and the Turkish Jews founded their own newspapers and magazines to respond to those attacks. Shaul was one of the first contributors to Turkey's fledgling Jewish press, and some of his most important articles are included in this volume. He himself moved to Israel in 1950 but continued to write articles for Turkish Jewish publications throughout his life and also authored a book on the folklore of the Turkish Jews. From Balat to Bat Yam is a testament to Eli Shaul's deeply felt patriotism, which consisted not only of love for his native Turkey but insistence that she treat all her citizens as equals".‎

‎The historic hammams of Bursa.‎

‎New English Paperback. Pbo. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 17 cm). In English. [xii], 151 p., color and b/w ills. The historic hammams of Bursa. The aim of the book you are about to read is to provide detailed information about the history of hammam culture in the city of Bursa, which is famous for its hot springs and hammams, and about the "public hammams" built in the Ottoman period. In order to create in the minds of readers an image of the "Turkish Hammam" in all its aspects it describes the tradition of bathing in the context of history as a whole and the emergence of the hammam phenomenon, the architectural and historical characteristics of the Ottoman hammam, the importance of the hammam tradition in Turkish culture and its place in social life. The book contains a review of the present state of the hammams of Bursa and the reasons for their decline. Proposals have been made as to how these structures could be better integrated into modern life.‎

‎ELIF SEZER.‎

‎The oral and the written in Ottoman literature: The reader notes on the story of Firuzsah.‎

‎New English Paperback. Demy 8vo. (21 x 15 cm). In English. 306 p. The oral and the written in Ottoman literature: The reader notes on the story of Firuzsah. In contemporary studies of Ottoman literature, a two-layered scheme is used which divides Ottoman literature into two parts, 'folk' literature and 'court' literature. In these studies, the oral is totally attributed to folk literature, while court literature is considered entirely written. However, these two ways of producing, transmitting, and consuming literature, the oral and the written, have always existed together, nourishing and transforming each other. This thesis challenges the constructed binary opposition between the oral and the written in Ottoman literature studies, focusing on a popular work called the Story of Fîrûzsâh, widely read throughout the eighteenth century. For the purposes of this thesis, Fîrûzsâh is especially important because of its paratextual elements. The manuscript under study, actually the forty-fifth volume of the entire story, contains many marginal notes. These notes give information about the names of the public readers, and the places and dates of the public readings. In addition, there are notes that show the daily, aesthetic, and even political reactions of the readers in the eighteenth century. Depending on these reactions, four types of readers were identified and named the romantic, the pedantic, the foul-mouthed and the Janissary. Focusing on the case of the Story of Fîrûzsâh, it has been shown that aspects of oral culture and their everyday expressions can also be traced from written texts.‎

‎Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Original wrappers. 16mo. (14,5 x 10,5 cm). In Ottoman script (Old Turkish with Arabic letters). 20 p. First and only edition of this extremely rare pamphlet includes the chapters of 'From Marseilles to Gabon' and 'From Libreville to Banguela' of Trivier's expeditions in Africa. First chapter includes Trivier's Mozambique travel by ship over the Strait of Gibraltar. In this chapter, Trivier described the purpose of his voyage as "After returning to France from my last trip in January 1890, I declared that many more places should be seen. I have written many articles about the necessity of looking for new ways to eliminate the fears and worries caused by McKinley tariffs that are harmed everywhere. As a nice result of this, the Paris City Council and the Bordeaux Chamber of Commerce decided not to be dispatched to the hometown of Africans with an amount of money close to 11,000 francs.". In the second chapter, he describes Congo and other parts of Central Africa. French explorer Elisee Trivier followed in the footsteps of Scottish missionary David Livingstone in his attempt to explore the interior of Africa. Trivier's expedition traveled in 1889 up the Congo and across Africa to the island of Zanzibar on the eastern coast. Trivier is considered the first French explorer to have crossed Africa.
