‎[AUSTRIAN ARCHITECT OF THE YOUNG TURKISH REPUBLIC] Typescript letter signed 'Profesör Egli'.‎

‎Very Good Turkish Original typewritten letter written in response to questions about some interior decorations and curtains during the construction of a Republican Turkish school, signed 'Professor Egli'. 30x23 cm. In Turkish (Modern). 1 p. Chipped and damaged right side. Otherwise a good paper. Written to 'Zeki Bey' on December 21, 1933. An architectural environment of the Early Republic Period (1923-1950) has an effective language explicitly revealing political and cultural aspects of the Republic. Under such conditions, architects coming from German-speaking countries contributed quite significantly to the establishment of the International Architectural Style of Turkey in the '30s. Throughout the 1930s when the Building of School Political Sciences constituting the subject of the study was constructed, the International Architectural Style conveyed to Turkey by means of architects coming from Germany-speaking countries had a growing impact in the country. Ernst Egli, one of those architects, was one of the pioneers of this "modern" style with his numerous designs, and his educator and manager identity. Egli, son of Johann Jakob Egli, (1840-1918) carried out significant works in the field of educational buildings which he dealt with cautiously and fastidiously and explicitly regarded as a symbol of prestige. Primarily educational buildings together with National Education Ministry Construction Office management, Istanbul Fine Arts Academy Architecture Branch management, and teaching, design, and application of important public buildings in Ankara are among the said studies. (An important building for the representation of modernization project: Swiss architect Ernst Arnold Egli and Ankara Political Sciences School, Leyla Alpagut.).‎

‎EROL AKYAVAS.‎

‎Erol Akyavas. Retrospective.= Retrospektif. [Exhibition catalogue]. 29 Mayis 25 Agustos 2013. Curated by Levent Çalikoglu, Birnur Temel. Edited by Esin Eskinat.‎

‎New English Paperback. Pbo. 4to. (29 x 24 cm). In English and Turkish. 311, [5] p., color ills. The Exhibition Erol Akyavas - Retrospective, organized by Istanbul Modern presents a comprehensive inventory of the artist's oeuvre that extends over half a century from the 1950s to the late 1990s. The exhibition brings together in great diversity the unique synthesis Akyavas developed between the artistic and cultural worlds of the East and the West, his perspectival and architectural arrangements on the canvas that passed through many transformations in time, his subconscious explorations that focused on the human figure and his interaction in his late period with the various cultures of the world. This selection of around 290 works, underlines the creative and pioneering identity Akyavas assumed between modern and contemporary art. The works of Erol Akyavas, who was born in Turkey, studied architecture and art in Europe and America and placed his interest in Eastern arts, and particularly Islamic art, and the Sufi tradition at the centre of his art, form one of the most accomplished examples of non-Western quests for Modernity that gained increasing prominence after World War II. Akyavas's world of images, assembled both from Eastern and Western art with a unique interpretation is considered an original synthesis. His quest for form and content that has a scope that extends from Cubism to Surrealism, from Islamic miniatures to prehistoric wall paintings and from calligraphy-based practices to the symbolism of monotheistic religions, develops an exceptional artistic language. In these paintings where perspective in the classical sense disappears, each image that is included in the painting is also ascribed a question, and the image is constructed through a Sufi sense of love, Akyavas creates a world which he embraces with faith.‎

‎Once upon a time Jews lived in Kirklareli: The story of the Adato Family, 1800-1934.‎

‎New English Paperback. Pbo. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 17 cm). In English. 319 p. B/w ills. It is not well known that the town of Kirklareli in Turkish Thrace was once home to a Sephardic Jewish community. Today, due to emigration, only a few individuals remain. Erol Haker, whose parents were originally from Kirklareli, tells the story of three generations of the Adoto family, which has resided in Kirklareli since its expulsion from Spain at the end of the fifteenth century. Using the archives of the Alliance school in Kirklaerli as well as interviews with surviving natives of the town, Haker describes the Jewish lives in the nineteenth century and then their experience of traumatic events from the Balkan and First World Wars and the arrival of Bulgarian and Greek armies until the anti-Jewish riots of the 1930s. Haker's work serves to reminds us of the fact that the Thracian Jewish community was one of the Ottoman Empire's most vibrant and that Kirklareli was, until the early years of the Turkish Republic, still home to an important part of Turkey's Jewish population. Röntgen su'â'âti ve tatbîkat-i tibbiye ve cerrâhiyesi.= Röntgen isinlari ve tip ve cerrahi uygulamalari. Edited by by Aytekin Besim.; Translated by Metin Ünsal; Bekir Koç. Includes facsimile of original illustrated and photographed manuscript and its transcription into modern Turkish. The discovery of X-rays (1895) by W.C. Roentgen has been a very important step of the modern civilization as a revolutionary technique for scientists all around the world and it has immediately been applied in medical field. Roentgen apparatus was first installed in Turkey by an intern doctor Esad Feyzi who took the first radiographies at the Imperial Medical School (Istanbul) in 1896. He made use of X-ray method for medical diagnosis later on when Turkish-Greek war broke out in 1897. Esad Feyzi worked in the clinical team led by professor Salih Effendi, MD, at the Yildiz Temporary Military Hospital in Istanbul to take radiographies of soldiers wounded at war in cooperation with the German Red Cross medical delegation. This event is most probably the earliest examples of the application of X-ray technique into military surgery all over the world. Researches have also proven that medical radiography technique was also applied in Greece by Greek and English doctors during that war. This war gave the opportunity to German and British medical teams to use X-ray as a radiographic imaging technique at the two confronting sides that was used in consequent wars in other parts of the world, later on.‎
