Kur'an-i Kerim sanati. Türk ve Islâm Eserleri Müzesi hazineleri. 15 Ekim 2016 - 20 Subat 2017. [Exhibition catalogue]. With contributions by François Derroche, Edhem Eldem, Jane McAuliffe, Sana Mirza, Zeren Tanindi.
New Turkish Paperback. 4to. (33 x 25 cm). Edition in Turkish. 382 p., color ills. Kur'an-i Kerim sanati. Türk ve Islâm Eserleri Müzesi hazineleri. 15 Ekim 2016 - 20 Subat 2017. [Exhibition catalogue]. With contributions by François Derroche, Edhem Eldem, Jane McAuliffe, Sana Mirza, Zeren Tanindi. In the early twentieth century, the Ottoman Empire was in political turmoil. Officials moved valuable artworks--including thousands of sumptuous Qur'an (Koran) manuscripts and loose pages dating from the 7th to 17th century--to Istanbul to ensure their safety. Penned by celebrated calligraphers and embellished by skilled illuminators and bookbinders, these manuscripts are now housed in the Museum of Turkish and Islamic Arts (Türk ve slam Eserleri Müzesi or TIEM) in Istanbul, established in 1914. This story unfolds in "The Art of the Qur'an: Treasures from the Museum of Turkish and Islamic Arts," the companion publication to the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery's groundbreaking exhibition, the first major presentation of Qur'ans in the United States. The book's authors describe the formation of this one-of-a-kind collection and the history of TIEM, whose centuries-old records on patrons, calligraphers, illuminators, and provenance allow us to create "biographies" detailing the production of the Qur'ans in the exhibition. Essays address the Qur'an as a written text--from content and organization to the elaborate calligraphy and illuminated designs that transformed the volumes into beautiful artworks. "The Art of the Qur'an "also includes in-depth descriptions of some seventy works from TIEM and the Smithsonian's Sackler and Freer Galleries. It features full-page, color images of the earliest known Qur'an folios and manuscripts from the Umayyad and Abbasid Near East (7th-10th century), Seljuk Iran and Anatolia (12th century), the Mongol Il-Khanid and Timurid empires and Mamluk Cairo (14th and 15th centuries), Safavid and Ottoman empires (16th and 17th centuries) as well as a number of mosque furnishings, such as Qur'an boxes and stands. Most of these works have rarely, if ever, been published.

Polychrome Iznik tiles.
New English Original bdg. HC. Oblong large 8vo. (22,5 x 22,5 cm). In English. 96 p., 70 color plates. "This book brings together some seventy Iznik tiles produced in the second half of the sixteenth century. They are grouped broadly according to their dominating motifs. In choosing the tiles included in this book no qualification other than that they should be polychrome and produced during the second half of the sixteenth century has been sought. All of them are underglaze-painted with a transparent colourless glaze. In accordance with the visual objective of the book, in some tiles the discolouration of glaze, stains, nail holes, and other flaws, that possibly occurred as they were transported to the capital or later, have been digitially corrected. In a few cases hiatuses have been eliminated.".

FATIH CIMOK.
The book of Rüstem Pasa tiles.
New English Original bdg. Dust wrapper. Oblong large 8vo. (23 x 23 cm). In English. 64 p., 60 color plates. "This small mosque, which was completed in 1561 for Rüstem Pasa, a grand vizier of Süleyman the Magnificent, houses one of the richest collection of underglaze polychrome Iznik tile revetments in Istanbul. The revetment tiles in the Mosque of Rüstem Pasa are generally acknowledged as an outstanding example of the unique richness and superb artistic achievement characteristic of the era of Süleyman the Magnificent. Representing an ostentatious culmination of centuries of evolution in the art of ceramics and tiles, the Rüstem Pasa tile revetments also reflect the perfection of ceramic art at a particular stage of its development. Their lavish employment in this monument may show that Sinan, Sultan Süleyman's chief architect who built the mosque, had not yet decided how to use this new medium in architecture. In his other monuments, he appeared to use underglaze polychrome tiles more economically. The unusual number of motifs encountered in the mosque also points out that neither the decorators nor the architect had decided what designs to favor.".

FATIN ULUENGIN, BÜLENT ULUENGIN, MEHMET BENGI ULUENGIN.
Classic construction details of Ottoman monumental architecture.= Osmanli anit mimarisinde klasik yapi detaylari.
New English Paperback. 4to. (29 x 20 cm). In English and Turkish. 271 p., b/w plates. Classic construction details of Ottoman monumental architecture.= Osmanli anit mimarisinde klasik yapi detaylari. Enlarged Sixth Edition. A whole is made up of details. In traditional architecture a detail is developed over time through trial and error. When it is believed to have been ?perfected', however, it need no longer change. Close inspection will reveal that most traditional details of the same type have many similarities, even when produced in diffe-rent regions at different times. This is one of the most characte-ristic aspects of traditional architecture, and is the exact opposite of our understanding of architecture today. One must strive to understand the working principle of a detail-how and why it has evolved to function so well, and, often, so beautifully. An architect capable of this understanding has mastered that detail and its utility, and can help its further evolution in the context of contemporary conditions of construction. This book, which is the outcome of 60 years of professional experience, is useful primarily for architects, preservationists and students in these fields. Yet this book can also address a much greater audience because it is the first to compile Ottoman classical details in a single volume. Furthermore, some of the buildings which these details are part of have fallen into ruins and others have lost their authenticity due to faulty interventions. These may be the only records of their details. If this book can attract attention to these beautiful details and further an understanding of their working principles it would have accomplished its purpose. Perfection lies in the details.
