Hitit sanati.
New New English Original bdg. Dust wrapper. In special slip-case. 4to. (28 x 23 cm). In Turkish. 373 p., ills. Hitit sanati. Darga was a Turkish archaeologist. She was the granddaughter of Darugazade Mehmet Emin Bey, Sultan Abdülhamid's first chamberlain, the poet and translator of Jules Verne's novels from French into Turkish. Darga was born in Istanbul in June 1921 and was brought up by French governesses. She studied in Paris and Istanbul. Her father was a doctor and because of her father's professional obligations, she traveled through the Anatolia of the 1930s with her family. Roman and Greek history, debates on art and literature were the staple fair at the dinner table of this intellectual family of the late Ottoman era. Moreover, the family celebrated all religious rituals of the city like Christmas, Easter, Ramadan and sacrificial festivals, organizing fancy dress parties. Darge attended Istanbul University's Hittitology Department at the beginning of the 1940s. She would meet many notables of Archeology at this faculty, founded by Prof. Theodor Bossert who fled from Germany to Turkey. Her enthusiasm and extravert personality, excellence in French and German and of course passion for Archeology drew attention. After Prof Bossert discovered Karatape, a very important excavation site from Hittite era, Darga accompanied him in late 40s. She learned a lot from her tutor on the significance of history and archeology, and the Turkey of those days, during their travels and investigations on horseback. After her researches on Archeology in Germany and France, Darga concentrated on philology and then attained her professorship. In her book Woman in Anatolia, she indicated the status of women in this land and in her Hittite Art; she drew the attention of not only intellectuals but also the general public. This is Turkish Edition.

Abasiyanik Sait Faik

ABDALLAH-AL-YAFI, (1901-1986).
[FIRST ARAB TO RECEIVE A PHD ABOUT WOMEN'S RIGHTS IN SORBONNE] La condition privee de la femme dans le droit de l'Islam. [i.e. The legal status of women in the law of Islam].
Very Good French Original wrappers. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 16 cm). In French. [v], 163, [1] p. Chippings on extremities of cover, rubbed on spine, overall a good copy. First edition of this scarce book titled in English "The Legal Status of Women in the Law of Islam", written by Al-Yafi who was the Prime Minister of Lebanon serving twelve times between 1938 and 1969, and at the forefront of the struggle to give women the right to vote, which he was able to achieve with his cabinet in power in 1952. Abdallah Al-Yafi is the first Arab to receive a PhD from the Sorbonne University, where he wrote his thesis about women's rights in Islam. The thesis subject was "The Legal Status of Women in the Law of Islam" (French: La Condition Privée de la Femme dans le Droit de l'Islam). Drawing from Quranic decrees and Islamic principles, he made a case about how women are supposed to be allotted more rights in society. Al-Yafi believed that the empowerment of women was crucial for building a stronger society, equality providing a steadier base. These thoughts, when expressed in the 1920s, had quite an 'avant-garde' ring to conservative Muslim ears: they were not always welcome with wide open arms or minds. Later on in his political life, Abdallah Al-Yafi's political opponents brandished his thesis as a weapon of defamation to tarnish his reputation. According to them, he was not a "righteous Muslim" but a French minion who had given in to the French authorities-the colonial mandate authority in Lebanon at the time-in blaspheming the Islamic religion in reward of a "Doctorat d'État". These were aimed at ruining the honest image that he so carefully cultivated throughout his life.

Abdulaziz of the Ottoman Empire
Portrait of Sultan Abdülaziz of the Ottoman Empire
Single Photograph. Vg. 10x6 Cm. Original photo image circa 1867 Carte-de-visite 10x6 cm size. Abdülaziz of the Ottoman Empire or Abdülaziz I 9 February 1830 - 4 June 1876 was the 32nd Sultan of the Ottoman Empire and reigned between June 1861 and May 1876. He was the son of Sultan Mahmud II and succeeded his brother Abdülmecid I in 1861. Born at Eyüp Palace Constantinople present-day Istanbul on 9 February 1830 Abdülaziz received an Ottoman education but was nevertheless an ardent admirer of the material progress that was made in the West. He was the first Ottoman Sultan who travelled to Western Europe visiting a number of important European capitals including Paris London and Vienna in the summer of 1867. Photo is from the Emile Desmaisons studio Paris. Apart from his passion for the Ottoman Navy which had the world's third largest fleet in 1875 after the British and French navies the Sultan took an interest in documenting the Ottoman Empire. He was also interested in literature and was a talented classical music composer. Some of his compositions together with those of the other members of the Ottoman dynasty have been collected in the album "European Music at the Ottoman Court" by the London Academy of Ottoman Court Music.

unknown
