‎New English Paperback. Pbo. Demy 8vo. (21 x 14 cm). In French.

‎New English Paperback. Demy 8vo. (21 x 14 cm). In English.

‎Kelenderis I. Sources, remains and finds.= Kelenderis I. Kaynaklar, kalintilar, buluntular.‎

‎Fine English Paperback. Pbo. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 17 cm). In Turkish and summary in English. [viii], 83 p., 3 plans and 92 numerous b/w plts. Kelenderis I. Kaynaklar, kalintilar, buluntular.= Kelenderis I. Sources, remains and finds. Kelenderis (Aydincik) is a town and district of Mersin Province on the Mediterranean coast of Turkey, 173 km (107 mi) from Mersin and 325 km (202 mi) from Antalya. Aydincik has also been called Celenderis, Gilindire, Kelenderis. Aydincik is the site of the ancient Greek Celenderis, a port and fortress in Isauria. It was one of the best harbours of this coast in ancient times and also a very strong defensive position. Artemidorus, with other geographers, considered this place, as the commencement of Cilicia. There must have been earlier settlement going back to the Hittites and Assyrians but so far no evidence has been uncovered. According to legend the city was founded by Sandocus, a grandson of Phaethon, who emigrated here from Syria. He married Pharnace, the princess of Hyria. Their son Cinyras founded Paphos. Historians reported that the city was indeed a Phoenician settlement, later expanded by an Ionian colony from Samos. Excavations carried out since 1986 have revealed findings going back to the 8th century B.C. when the Samians arrived. The city thrived during the 4th and 5th centuries BC. It was a stop on the shipping lanes between the Aegean Sea to the west, Cyprus to the south, and Syria to the east. In the 450s B.C. the fleets of Athens passed by on their way to support rebellions against the Achaemenid Empire in Cyprus and Egypt. During this period Celenderis became the easternmost city to pay tribute to the Athenian-led Delian league. Payments were only made from 460 B.C. to 454 B.C. before Athens abandoned both campaigns and accepted a peace agreement which left Celenderis in the Achaemenid-allied Kingdom of Cilicia. During the Hellenistic era (1st century BC) Celenderis was in a political coalition with the kingdom of the Ptolemys of Egypt, and faced severe difficulties from piracy. This problem persisted until Ancient Rome took military actions against the pirates, and Celenderis enjoyed a second period of wealth as the Romans secured the Mediterranean trade routes. They built a city around the port with villas, palaces, waterworks, and baths. During the Middle Ages, the grandeur persisted as the city was controlled by Byzantium, and in the 11th century the Armenians.‎

‎The Armenian Massacres in Ottoman Turkey: A Disputed Genocide (Utah Series in Turkish and Islamic Stud)‎

‎[Utah Series In Turkish And Islamic Studies ] In 1915, the Ottoman government, then run by the Young Turks, deported most of its Armenian citizens from their eastern Anatolian lands. According to reliable estimates, close to forty percent of the prewar population perished, many in brutal massacres. Armenians call it the first genocide of the twentieth century. Turks speak of an instance of intercommunal warfare and wartime relocation made necessary by the treasonous conduct of their Armenian minority. The voluminous literature on this tragic episode of World War I is characterized by acrimony and distortion in which both sides have simplified a complex historical reality and have resorted to partisan special pleading. The Armenian Massacres in Ottoman Turkey examines the rich historical evidence without political preconceptions. Relying on archival materials as well as eye-witness testimony, Guenter Lewy avoids the sterile "was-it-genocide-or-not" debate and presents a detailed account of what actually happened. The result is a book that will open a new chapter in this contentious controversy and may help achieve a long-overdue reconciliation of Armenians and Turks. 370p. bibligraphy.index Book‎

Divan literature is described as "a certain tradition literature with its rules and boundaries" in the most general form. These rules and boundaries have enabled the formation of common expressions in religion and in Sufi intellection in particular and in poetry by the influence of Persian literature and they have made it traditional in time. In this context in classical Turkish poetry whose male poets are predominant in quality and quantity patriarchal rhetoric presents an outlook that its frame has been established by common tropes metaphors poetic themes and in short by similar imaginations and ideas. The divans of Lady Mihri died after 1512 Lady Leyla died in 1848 and Lady Seref 1809-1861 have different aesthetic understandings in that context. Layl Hanim was one of the few Turkish women poets who made a collection of her poems. Lived in Istanbul and died in 1848. ‎LEYLA HANIM.‎

‎Solmus çiçekler.‎

‎Very Good English In modern cloth bdg. Cr. 8vo. (20 x 14 cm). In Ottoman script. 142, [2] p. Özege: 18198. Leyla Hanim [Saz] was a Turkish composer, poet and writer. Born in 1850 in Istanbul to a family of Ottoman aristocrats of Cretan Turkish origins, she was the daughter of Ismail Hakki Pasha, (often called Hekim Ismail Pasha (Ismail Pasha the Doctor). She spent her childhood in the Dolmabahçe Palace, where she took private lessons in French, and later in ancient Greek and theology, when her father was the Ottoman governor of Crete. She married Giritli Sirri Pasha, a high-ranked Ottoman administrator of Cretan origin and a poet of his own right. In line with her husband's appointments, she traveled across Anatolia and the Balkans. She settled in Istanbul after the death of her husband in 1895, and kept in close relations with the Ottoman Palace. In 1873, she mothered a son named Vedat, who became a notable architect. As of 1895, she dedicated herself to poetry and music, in both the Turkish and European schools. She took piano lessons and hosted people of art and science in her mansion. She composed more than fifty songs, the texts of which were written by her contemporary romantic poets. Her songs are strong in technique, emotional and closely faithful to the traditions of Ottoman classical music.‎

‎LEYLA YILDIRIM.‎

‎Unfulfilled promises. Gallipoli, 1915.‎

‎New English Paperback. Pbo. Cr. 8vo. (20 x 14 cm). In English. 432 p. 100th Year Of The Çanakkale War; From the pen of a woman, A Fairytalelike Novel Set During The Çanakkale War. Unfulfilled Promises features a great love story set against the backdrop of The Great War (1914-1918). Gül Nihal Semsettin journeys from Turkey to London and back again to her family home in Çanakkale. Having studied medicine in London stands her in good stead when the whole of the Çanakkale Peninsula becomes embroiled in the struggle by the Allied Forces to take the land by force. Her suitors are from military backgrounds posted to her homeland from England and Australia as part of the enemy, sent to attack Turkey. For a young Turkish woman to have an affair with an enemy soldier was enough to disgrace any respectable Turkish family; but that was only part of Gül's dilemma. My Dearest Boy, You are all I have in this world; a treasure entrusted to me by God. Sadly however, all I can entrust with you is this letter. I am sure you will always wish that we had spent more time together and you will probably read it again and again. Undoubtedly you will wish that I was beside you but sadly, we have both been deprived of that joy, my angel. I want to assure you that although I'm reluctantly being dragged away from you my heart will continue to beat with yours. Don't forget that when you love someone, distances don't matter and nothing is impossible.‎
