‎Corpus of the mosaics of Turkey. Volume II: Xanthos. Part 2: The West area.‎

‎New English Original bdg. HC. 4to. (32 x 24,5 cm). In English. 131 p. Color and b/w ills. Corpus of the mosaics of Turkey. Volume II: Xanthos. Part 2: The West area. The present book forms the second volume in the Corpus of the Mosaics of Turkey, following upon the initial work on Xanthos published by Marie-Patricia Raynaud in 2009. This new volume broadens the documentation and appreciation of mosaic art in that city. Future monographs in the same series will turn to other archaeological sites in Turkey, whose vast mosaic treasures are gradually receiving the scholarly attention they deserve. This entire project originated at a meeting of mosaic experts from six countries led by M. Sahin and D. Parrish and held at the American Research Institute in Turkey at Istanbul in 2004. In this work, Anne-Marie Manière-Lévêque, a very experienced member of the French team that has been excavating at Xanthos for many years, carefully records and interprets mosaic pavements from the western part of Xanthos, which includes buildings with mosaic decoration on the Lycian Acropolis and in the "Roman" Agora. The pavements ornamented both domestic and religious structures, and they include several fine figural carpets in addition to geometric floors. The pavement techniques consist of both opus tessellatum and opus sectile, and chronologically they cover the late Antique and Early Byzantine periods. These floors complement the fine assortment of pavements found in the East Basilica inventoried in the first Xanthos volume. In both its text and rich illustration, the present work maintains the high standard of scholarship employed in the earlier volume, and all of this is underscored by the author's deep familiarity with the archaeological exploration of Xanthos. Both books in the series serve as models for future mosaic research in Turkey. ARCHEOLOGY Anatolian civilizations Mosaic History of art.‎

‎Levant: Splendour and Catastrophe on the Mediterranean‎

‎br. ed. 480pp. Levant is a book of cities. It describes Smyrna, Alexandria and Beirut when they were windows on the world, escapes from nationality and tradition, centres of wealth, pleasure and freedom. Using unpublished family papers, Philip Mansel describes their colourful, contradictory history, from the beginning of the French alliance with the Ottoman Empire in the sixteenth century to their decline in the mid twentieth century. Smyrna was burnt; Alexandria Egyptianised; Beirut lacerated by civil war.‎

‎Renaissance Music in the Slavic World‎

‎, Brepols, 2019 Paperback, 304 pages, Size:178 x 254 mm, Illustrations:32 b/w, Languages: English, French, Italian. ISBN 9782503582429.‎

‎Summary In the essays collected in this volume, leading scholars from Croatia, the Czech Republic, and Poland, as well musicologists from Western Europe, take on the challenge of fulfilling a historiographical and cultural gap in music history by restoring the place of the countries of Central Europe that, as Milan Kundera put it succinctly, 'vanished from the map of the West'. The opportunity to consider 'other' renaissances enlarges the historiographical perspectives of Renaissance musicology, going beyond the traditional focus on the Franco-Flemish or Franco-Italian axis, and opens new scenarios on unexplored Renaissance music. What was it that happened on a cultural and musical level on the Dalmatian coast - influenced by the economic boost of a powerful Venice? The same question emerges when considering Habsburg Prague and its renewed, central role in the European political theatre, and as a reaffirmed capital that inaugurated a period of economic and cultural renaissance for the Bohemian Kingdom. How did the secularization process evolve in these territories, caught between the religion wars following the Counter-Reformation in the West, and the Turkish threat on the East? What peculiar features does the musical production of these territories reveal? The preference accorded to the expression Renaissance Music is not to be intended as a shortcut. The intention of the contributing scholars is to focus on, and to handle independently, the endogenous cultural production without considering it only as a phenomenon of importation or as the mere imitation of an existing model. In this way, borders reveal a dialectical function in the context of musical Humanism, revealing here, maybe for the first time, an authentic European dimension. The essays in this volume were undertaken within the framework of the European programme EACEA - Culture Programme 2007-2013 Aux confins de l'Humanisme musical: monde slave et culture m diterran enne, developed between 2010 and 2012 by the Centre d' tudes sup rieures de la Renaissance in Tours, the Matica Hrvastka - Ogranak Dubrovnik (Mediterranean Study Centre of Dubrovnik), the Univerzita Karlova v Praze, and the University of Palermo. ‎500 years of Ottoman cuisine.‎

‎New English Paperback. Pbo. Oblong large 8vo. (23 x 23 cm). Color ills. In English. 283 p. 500 years of Ottoman cuisine. Ottoman cuisine was a culinary culture which grew from the 15th century onwards and was shaped by an élite group, who lived in and around Istanbul's Palace, an élite who took pleasure in good food. This culture included everything from the ingredients used to the methods of cooking and from the kinds of food eaten to the eating habits, table manners, and the type of kitchens where the food was prepared. The first part of the book looks at the elements which comprise Ottoman cuisine, and in the second part you will find a selection of recipes. The book deals with the cuisine of the Ottoman palace and élite society, and not the modest fare of the ordinary people. As in all societies, there was a considerable difference between the food culture of the Ottoman palace and that of the ordinary people, and there were also differences between the cuisine of Istanbul and the cuisines of other regions. The rather humble fare of the lower strata of society and recipes for it is a subject for another book, and one which I fear will present quite a challenge to its author, since it is unlikely that anyone would have taken the time to write down the plain combinations of foods eaten by the common people. Another point worth noting is the period covered by the book. Since the geographical area in question and its social limits are clearly defined, so too is the time frame: Istanbul was the capital of the Ottoman Empire from May 29th, 1453 to September 13th, 1923, and it is the development of Ottoman cuisine within this time frame that I aim to introduce to you‎

‎Corpus of the mosaics of Turkey. 2 volumes set. Volume I: Lycia - Xanthos. Part 1: The East Basilica. Volume II: Xanthos. Part 2: The West area.‎

‎New English Original bdg. HC. 4to. (32 x 24,5 cm). In English. 2 volumes set: (186 p.; 131p). Color and b/w ills. Vol 1: This first volume of the Mosaic Corpus of Turkey places her among the countries of the Mediterranean world and Western Europe publishing systematically the mosaic wealth in their own lands. The project followed the serious models of Recueil general des mosaìques de la Gaule and Mosaici antichi in Italia. The corpus project was initiated at a meeting of mosaic experts from six countries led by M. Sahin and D. Parrish and held at American Research Institute in Turkey, Istanbul, in 2004. The first volume of the project covers the mosaics from Xanthos. This volume prepared for publication by Marie-Patricia Raynaud presents, with all their phases, the floor pavements of the East Basilica employing very successfully both opus tessellatum and opus sectile techniques. Two more aspects of this work need to be underlined: first of all, the magnificent photographs and the successful reconstruction drawings and floor plans of the mosaics, which will provide the reader with a visual festivity. This volume with its publication and research quality is a strong start for the Mosaic Corpus of Turkey. This also means that a high standard is already established for the future monographs. Vol. 2: The present book forms the second volume in the Corpus of the Mosaics of Turkey, following upon the initial work on Xanthos published by Marie-Patricia Raynaud in 2009. Both books in the series serve as models for future mosaic research in Turkey.‎
