The unique selection from The Suna and Inan Kiraç Foundation Photography Collection reveal the magnificent structures, the daily life and the intriguing personalities of a past Istanbul. Istanbul has evolved into an industrial city and an enormous metropolis: its silhouette, architecture, vehicles, bridges, quays, streets and public spaces have attained an entirely different appearance. Masters such as James Robertson, Félice Beato, Pascal Sébah, Polycarpe Joaillier, Abdullah Brothers, Guillaume Berggren, Bogos Tarkulyan, Mihran Iranian and Gülmez Brothers, not only document the nostalgic images of the city during their time, but also took us along a pleasant journey extending from Karaköy to Rumelifeneri through photographs taken with the difficult and onerous techniques of the time.

M[IKHAIL] M[OISEYEVICH] BOTVINNIK, (1911-1995).
Matç-revans: Alehin - Euwe. Na pervenstvo mira, (Oktyabr - Dekayabr, 1937 r.).
Fine English Original cloth bdg. with Russian Cyrillic lettered gilt on cloth's spine and board. Five compartments on spine; one 'pawn', one 'bishop' and one 'king' gilt on three, half-title and a traditional illustration on other two compartments. 12mo. (15 x 12 cm). In Russian. 214, [2] p., classical b/w diagrams. First Edition. Extremey rare. Matç-revans: Alehin - Euwe. Na pervenstvo mira, (Oktyabr - Dekayabr, 1937 r.). The 1937 World Chess Championship was played between Max Euwe and Alexander Alekhine in the Netherlands from October 5 to December 4, 1937. Alekhine regained his title. This was the last "Imperial" World Championship where the world champion had control of the title and could set match conditions; Alekhine died in 1946 and FIDE stepped in to take control of the World Championship. Alexander Alekhine challenged Max Euwe to a rematch, and Euwe agreed to the challenge and the conditions. From October to December in 1937 the match was conducted, again in the Netherlands. If Alekhine had made the mistake of underestimating Euwe in 1935, he certainly did not underestimate him this time. Euwe won the first game with the white pieces, but in the end Alekhine's resolve (perhaps fueled by the 1935 defeat) proved to be too much for the Dutch Champion. After 25 games, with a score of +10 -4 =11, Alekhine gained the title for the second time. This was Alekhine's final title match. He held the title of World Chess Champion until his death in 1946. Mikhail Moiseyevich Botvinnik, (1911-1995) was a Soviet and Russian International Grandmaster and three-time World Chess Champion, widely considered one of the greatest chess players of all time. Working as an electrical engineer and computer scientist at the same time, he was one of the very few professional chess players who achieved distinction in another career while playing top-class competitive chess. He was also a pioneer of computer chess. Botvinnik was the first world-class player to develop within the Soviet Union, putting him under political pressure but also giving him considerable influence within Soviet chess. From time to time he was accused of using that influence to his own advantage, but the evidence is unclear and some suggest he resisted attempts by Soviet officials to intimidate some of his rivals. Botvinnik also played a major role in the organization of chess, making a significant contribution to the design of the World Chess Championship system after World War II and becoming a leading member of the coaching system that enabled the Soviet Union to dominate top-class chess during that time. His famous pupils include World Champions Anatoly Karpov, Garry Kasparov and Vladimir Kramnik.

MACKA SAIRI (Pseudonym of a poet from Trabzon who is against Ottoman Sultan).
31 MARCH INCIDENT / TRABZON IMPRINT Trabzon kahramani sehid-i muhterem Ilyas: Istanbul'da Otuzbir Mart vakâ-yi irticasinda köprü basinda Abdülhamid'in zâlîm askerlerine karsi durup din ve millet yolunda fedâ-yi can eden Yüzbasi Ilyas Bey'in vatan kardeslerine yadigâridir. i.e. Trabzon's hero esteemed martyr Ilyas: This work is a tribute to Captain Ilyas Bey who stood against Sultan Abdülhamid's oppressive forces at the bridgehead during the reactionary March 31 Incident in Istanbul sacrificing his life in defense of his faith and nation. It remains a legacy for his patriotic brothers.
Trabzon: Mesveret Matbaasi. AH 1325 1909. 1st Edition . Soft cover. Very Good. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. Original wrappers. Cr. 8vo. 20 x 11 cm. In Ottoman script Old Turkish with Arabic letters. 15 p. Restored spine by special tape chippings on extremities of the front cover uncut pages. Overall a good copy. The first and only edition of this epic poem written in memory of Turkish Unionist Captain Ilyas from Trabzon one of the first to fall when the sultan's supporters opened fire at the bridgehead in Galata Istanbul during the outbreak of the March 31 Incident. The poem which can also be regarded as an elegy for the Captain contains severe accusations against Sultan Abdulhamid II. The book was published by the Mesveret Printing House sharing its name with the Unionist and anti-sultan newspaper that had been published in Trabzon since the 1890s. It was written in 66 verses using an 11-syllable meter. The identity behind the pen name "Maçka Sairi" which appears at the end of the poem remains undetermined. He was likely a member of the Mesveret newspaper staff a close acquaintance of Captain Ilyas and a staunch opponent of Sultan Abdülhamid as well as a supporter of the Committee of Union and Progress. According to historical sources Captain Ilyas from Trabzon was the first person killed during the March 31 Incident. Due to this significant distinction an extensive poem was composed in his honor. While detailed information about Captain Ilyas is scarce it is believed that he was either a native of Trabzon or became affiliated with Mesveret while serving there. He was likely an Ottoman soldier who shared the same political views as the poem's author. Özege 25512. As of February 2025 we couldn't trace any copies in the OCLC.

Mesveret Matbaasi., AH 1325 paperback

Gallipoli
8vo Hardback. Book Condition: New. 222 x 148 mm. Language: English Brand New Book. The British-led Mediterranean Expeditionary Force that attacked the Ottoman Empire at Gallipoli in 1915 was a multi-national affair, including Australian, New Zealand, Irish, French, and Indian soldiers. Ultimately a failure, the campaign ended with the withdrawal of the Allied forces after less than nine months and the unexpected victory of the Ottoman armies and their German allies. In Britain, the campaign led to the removal of Churchill from his post as First Lord of the Admiralty and the abandonment of the plan to attack Germany via its soft underbelly in the East. Thereafter, it was largely forgotten on a national level, commemorated only in specific localities linked to the campaign. In post-war Turkey, by contrast, the memory of Gallipoli played an important role in the formation of a Turkish national identity, celebrating both the ordinary soldier and the genius of the republic s first president, Mustafa Kemal. The campaign served a similarly important formative role in both Australia and New Zealand, where it is commemorated annually on Anzac Day. For the southern Irish, meanwhile, the bitter memory of service for the King in a botched campaign was forgotten for decades. Shaped initially by the imperatives of war-time, and the needs of the grief-stricken and the bereft, the memory of Gallipoli has been re-made time and again over the last century. For the Turks an inspirational victory, for many on the Allied side a glorious and romantic defeat, for others still an episode best forgotten, Gallipoli has meant different things to different people, serving by turns as an occasion of sincere and heartfelt sorrow, an opportunity for separatist and feminist protest, and a formative influence in the forging of national identities.

Istanbul: City of Majesty at the Crossroads of the World
8vo, 368pp. hardcover in dj, For more than two millennia Istanbul has stood at the crossroads of the world, perched at the very tip of Europe, gazing across the shores of Asia. The history of this city--known as Byzantium, then Constantinople, now Istanbul--is at once glorious, outsized, and astounding. Founded by the Greeks, its location blessed it as a center for trade but also made it a target of every empire in history, from Alexander the Great and his Macedonian Empire to the Romans and later the Ottomans. At its most spectacular Emperor Constantine I re-founded the city as New Rome, the capital of the eastern Roman empire. Around it all Constantine built new walls, truly impregnable, that preserved power, wealth, and withstood any aggressor--walls that still stand for tourists to visit. --From its ancient past to the present, we meet the city through its ordinary citizens--the Jews, Muslims, Italians, Greeks, and Russians who used the famous baths and walked the bazaars--and the rulers who built it up and then destroyed it, including Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, the man who christened the city "Istanbul" in 1930
