MICHELLE U. CAMPOS.
Osmanli kardesler: Erken yirminci yüzyil Filistin'inde Müslümanlar, Hiristiyanlar ve Yahudiler. Translated by Mine Yildirim.
New English Paperback. Pbo. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 17 cm). In Turkish. 338 p., b/w ills. Osmanli kardesler: Erken yirminci yüzyil Filistin'inde Müslümanlar, Hiristiyanlar ve Yahudiler. Translated by Mine Yildirim. Turkish Edition of Campos' 'Ottoman Brothers: Muslims, Christians, and Jews in Early Twentieth-century Palestine'. In its last decade, the Ottoman Empire underwent a period of dynamic reform, and the 1908 revolution transformed the empire s 20 million subjects into citizens overnight. Questions quickly emerged about what it meant to be Ottoman, what bound the empire together, what role religion and ethnicity would play in politics, and what liberty, reform, and enfranchisement would look like. Ottoman Brothers explores the development of Ottoman collective identity, tracing how Muslims, Christians, and Jews became imperial citizens together. In Palestine, even against the backdrop of the emergence of the Zionist movement and Arab nationalism, Jews and Arabs cooperated in local development and local institutions as they embraced imperial citizenship. As Michelle Campos reveals, the Arab-Jewish conflict in Palestine was not immanent, but rather it erupted in tension with the promises and shortcomings of civic Ottomanism. OTTOMANIA Middle East Palestine.

MIKES KELEMEN, (1690-1761).

New Turkish Paperback. Demy 8vo. (21 x 14 cm). In Turkish. 263 p. Türkiye mektuplari. [= Törökorszagi levelek]. Translated by Sadrettin Karatay. Edited by Sezai Kurt. Correspondences and letters of Mikes Kelemen, (1690-1761), was a Transylvanian-born Hungarian political figure and essayist, noted for his rebellious activities against the Habsburg Monarchy. Mikes is referred to as the "Hungarian Goethe", made famous by his Letters from Turkey. With these, Mikes laid the foundations of Hungarian literary prose, and he is regarded as one of the first Hungarian prose authors. He was born in Zágon and grew up in Zabola (present-day Covasna County, Romania). He fought the Habsburg until being forced to flee to the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, France and eventually the Ottoman Empire. While in Tekirdag, where he lived in exile with the Transylvanian Prince Ferenc Rákóczi, Mikes completed and published his essays. After Rákóczi's death in 1735, he stayed in exile until his own death.

Mills Amy
Streets of Memory: Landscape, Tolerance, and National Identity in Istanbul
8vo, br. ed. pp.248. In 1900, foreigners, mostly of Greek, Jewish, or Armenian extraction, comprised 56 percent of the population of Constantinople. By the end of the century, Christians and Jews made up less than one percent of the population of Istanbul, largely as the result of sustained policies of Turkification that were enacted following the foundation of the Turkish Republic in 1923. As Mills remarks Those minorities were seen as both betrayers of the Turkish nation-state and an unacceptable reminder of the Ottoman imperial past.

Mini Fabio
Mediterraneo in guerra. Siria, Libia, Egitto, Tunisia. (ISBN:880621134X)
8vo br., pp. 200. (Einaudi. Passaggi). Cosa succederà in Siria, Iran e Arabia Saudita? Perché ciò che succede a Tripoli o al Cairo (o a Roma), spesso, si può capire solo guardando molto lontano.

MIRALAY SADIK BEY, (The founder of 'Hürriyet ve Itilâf Party', Turkish soldier and politician), (1860-1941).
[THE FOUNDER OF FREEDOM AND ACCORD PARTY] Original portrait photograph signed by Miralay Sadik Beg in his uniform, one of 150 Personae Non Gratae (150'likler = Hundredandfiftyers) in Turkish Republic from the Committee Union and Progress.
Very Good Turkish Original b/w photograph in its special cardboard. Signed and inscribed in Mersin, February, 23, 1934 as 'Kenan Bey kardesime: Miralay Sadik.'. No photograph studio's emblem. 24 x 21 cm. Miralay Sadik Bey, (Miralay or Mîr-i alay (Gendarmerie: Alaybeyi ) was a military rank of the Ottoman army and navy. It corresponds to a Colonel (modern Turkish: Albay). Miralay is a compound word composed of Mir (commander) and Alay (regiment). The rank was junior to the Mirliva and superior to the Kaymakam (Lieutenant Colonel).), (1860-1941), an Ottoman soldier and politician. He graduated from Mekteb-i Harbiye (Militarian Academy) in 1882. He went for duty to Trablusgarb (Libya), Syria, and Macedonia. He was in Manastir City, joined to Jalvatiyya order, and then joined to Ittihad ve Terakki Party (Committee Union and Progress) in secret (1906). He was the leader of Hâlaskâr Zâbitân (Saviour officers -Ottoman Turkish: Halâskâr Zâbitân-) was the name of a secret organization during the dissolution era of the Ottoman Empire), during the Bab-i Âlî raid in 1912, but it was failed. After a fail assassination of Mahmoud Chevket Pasha (Mahmud Sevket Pasa), he escaped to Paris, after that Egypt on the eve of the Balkan Wars (1912-1913). He was in adjacent relation to the British always. He returned to the country (25 April 1919) after Armistice (30 October 1918), and was elected to Heyet-i Ayan. And was elected to Hürriyet ve Itilâf Party -Committee Freedom and Entente- in 1920. He captured the management of the British Friendship Society in 1921. He was a dissident to Ankara Government during the Turkish National Struggle, but after the achievement of Ankara Government, he went to Romania with an English ship. Therefore he was got into '150 personae non-gratae of Turkey'. After the Turkish War of Independence (1919-1923), the newly established Republic of Turkey presented a list of 600 names to the Conference of Lausanne, which were to be declared personae non-gratae. Later, a list comprising only 150 of these, put into effect by the Grand National Assembly of Turkey on April 23, 1924 (revised on June 1, 1924), was included in the Treaty of Lausanne. The list (known as Yüzellilikler in Turkish, literally, Hundredandfiftyers), which is a who's who of the Ottoman Empire, had the purpose of eliminating the ruling elite of Ottomans from the Republic. The list is famous as it became the center of discussions of the nature of the new Republic: mainly, whether the Republic was to remain a continuation of the old Empire or not. The list has served as proof that the administration and ideologists of the Empire were not transferred to the Republic. The formation of this list is also related to studies analyzing the jurisdictional conflict between the Grand National Assembly of Turkey and the Ottoman Empire. These powers were fighting each other for their existence, as they were both active (using diplomatic and military means) until the Conference of Lausanne On June 28, 1938, the law restricting the entry of these people into Turkey was lifted, with the return of only a few on the list. In very good+ condition.

MIRI SHEFER-MOSSENSOHN.
Osmanli'da bilim: Kültürel yarati ve bilgi alisverisi. [= Science among the Ottomans: The cultural creation and exchange of knowledge]. Translated by Kübra Oguz.
As New Turkish Paperback. Roy. 8vo. (23 x 16 cm). Edition in Turkish. 316 p. Osmanli'da bilim: Kültürel yarati ve bilgi alisverisi. [= Science among the Ottomans: The cultural creation and exchange of knowledge]. Translated by Kübra Oguz. Scholars have long thought that, following the Muslim Golden Age of the medieval era, the Ottoman Empire grew culturally and technologically isolated, losing interest in innovation and placing the empire on a path toward stagnation and decline. Science among the Ottomans challenges this widely accepted Western image of the nineteenth- and early twentieth-century Ottomans as backward and impoverished. Miri Shefer-Mossensohn contends that Ottoman society and culture created a fertile environment that fostered diverse scientific activity. She demonstrates that the Ottomans excelled in adapting the inventions of others to their own needs and improving them. For example, in 1877, the Ottoman Empire boasted the seventh-longest electric telegraph system in the world; indeed, the Ottomans were among the era's most advanced nations with regard to modern communication infrastructure. To substantiate her claims about science in the empire, Shefer-Mossensohn studies patterns of learning; state involvement in technological activities; and Turkish- and Arabic-speaking Ottomans who produced, consumed, and altered scientific practices. The results reveal Ottoman participation in science to have been a dynamic force that helped sustain the six-hundred-year empire.

MIRZA REZA KHAN DANISH ARFAUDDAWLA, (1846-1937).
[SECRET TREATIES / ANGLO-PERSIAN AGREEMENT OF 1919] Manzûme-yi Sulh ve re'y-i Dânîsh [ve tercümesi]. [i.e. Peace agreement and views of Mirzâ Dânîsh]. Translated into Ottoman Turkish by Ferid [Kam].
Very Good Persian First Edition of this extremely rare bilingual tractate including Prince Reza Khan's thoughts on Anglo-Persian agreement in1919. Mirza Reza Khan also known as Prince Rezâ Arfa', was a diplomat and poet of the late Qajar period who serviced in Constantinople. During his years of service abroad Reza became acquainted with a number of European political leaders. He was reported to entertain Russian sympathies and was certainly instrumental in negotiating the first Russian government loan to Persia, in 1317 / 1900. Nevertheless, he also appears to have supported the Anglo-Persian Agreement of 1919. In 1332 / 1914 he served as minister of justice (wazîr-e 'adlîya) in Tehran for about a year. This agreement in 1919 was a provisional agreement made between the British and the Persian governments which, if ratified, would have granted the British a paramount position of control over the financial and military affairs of Iran. From the days when Napoleon conceived the idea of invading India with the help of Alexander I, the Tsar of Russia, Great Britain contemplated with apprehension the invasion of India by Russia via Persia and Afghanistan. Under the Anglo-Russian Convention of 1907 (q.v.), which divided Persia into rival spheres of influence, southern Persia was assigned to Britain while Russia controlled the northern portion. Later, according to the terms of "The Secret Treaties of Constantinople" of 18 March 1915, Constantinople was promised to Russia, and England was allowed to incorporate within her sphere of influence the neutral zone of Persia. (Iran & Ottoman History Series: 7). Edited and introduced by Dr. Nasrollah Salehi. "A number of Mirza Moheb-Ali Khan's treatises on the demarcation of the iranian-Ottoman boundary have previously been published in the 'Iran & Ottoman History Series, NO. 6'. The present volume includes his three other pieces on the topic. The first, entitled 'Layehe' was written in response to the long-serving Ottoman boundary commissioner Derwish Pasha's treatise. The second, entitled 'Lehaghe' is a critical piece written in response to another Ottoman boundary commissioner Khorshid Pasha's Seyhât-nâme-i Hudûd. The third, a short pamphlet entitled 'Taz'eil', is yet another refutation of the claims of Derwish Pasha's treatise on 'The Iranian Border Delimination' (Tahdid-e Hudûd-e Iraniyye) which he published in 1269/1853 in Istanbul. These writings have been compiled in Sha'aban 1292 / September 1875. The author criticizes and refutes Derwish and Khorshid Pasha's claims to contested territories in different ways...".
