Spanish in the Bosphorus: A sociolinguistic study on the Judeo-Spanish dialect spoken in Istanbul.
New English Paperback. Pbo. Demy 8vo. (21 x 14 cm). Color and b/w ills. 466 p. "In 1492, the Spanish monarchs expelled tens of thousands of Sephardic Jews from the Iberian Peninsula and other territories. Most Sephardim headed eastward and settled in Ottoman lands, where their language, known as Judeo-Spanish, survived and thrived for centuries. This book is the result of fieldwork in the Jewish community of Istanbul. It provides a historical and modern sociolinguistic account of the survival of the Judeo-Spanish dialect after centuries of fragmentation, French bilingualism, "Turkish only" language policies, emigration, and globalization. This work analyzes social patterns on the acquisition and use of Judeo-Spanish in the community as well as linguistic change throughout different generations of Istanbulite Sephardim. Focusing on several grammatical features, these data demonstrate that bilingualism with Turkish and reduced linguistic spaces promote language change. In a world where linguistic diversity is rapidly shrinking, the survival and future of Judeo-Spanish is a testament to the close bond between language, culture, community, and identity".

Shattering Empires: The Clash and Collapse of the Ottoman and Russian Empires, 1908–1918
8vo, br. ed. 364pp. The break-up of the Ottoman empire and the disintegration of the Russian empire were watershed events in modern history. The unravelling of these empires was both cause and consequence of World War I and resulted in the deaths of millions. It irrevocably changed the landscape of the Middle East and Eurasia and reverberates to this day in conflicts throughout the Caucasus and Middle East. Shattering Empires draws on extensive research in the Ottoman and Russian archives to tell the story of the rivalry and collapse of two great empires. Overturning accounts that portray their clash as one of conflicting nationalisms, this pioneering study argues that geopolitical competition and the emergence of a new global interstate order provide the key to understanding the course of history in the Ottoman-Russian borderlands in the twentieth century. It will appeal to those interested in Middle Eastern, Russian, and Eurasian history, international relations, ethnic conflict, and World War I.

RHOADS MURPHEY.
Essays on Ottoman historians and historiography.
New English Paperback. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 17 cm). In English. 248 p. Essays on Ottoman historians and historiography. Ottoman historians also shared a common attribute as social critics, never shirking their perceived duty to protect the sultan's reputation by condemning the misdeeds of wrongdoers and contraveners of the best traditions of ethical behavior and good governance, even when these misdeeds issued from the top ranks of Ottoman society. For them corporate or class solidarity was far less important than an unswerving commitment to shared values and principles and a reformist spirit is clearly detectible in their writing. It is clear that in addition to their devotion to literary pursuits and achievements Ottoman historians took their advisory role very seriously. This collection of essays is presented in the hope that it will contribute to a better understanding of the unique blend of praise, eulogy and panegyric with hard-hitting social criticism, realism and reformist ideals that typifies the Ottoman historical opus. It is offered not as a definitive or would-be authoritative statement on a subject as boundless and many faceted as Ottoman historical thought but with the desire to stimulate further reflection and to serve as a potential source of inspiration for future generations of students pursuing new lines of inquiry into the thought world and spiritual essence of the Ottomans in a bygone imperial age.

A bibliography of books, theses and articles published in Turkey concerning Judaism, 1923-2003.= Türkiye'de yayimlanmis Yahudilikle ilgili kitap, tez ve makaleler bibliyografyasi, 1923-2003.
New English Paperback. Pbo. Roy. 8vo. (23 x 16 cm). In Turkish and English. 432 p. We have, in the last few years, seen an increase in the number of Turkish publications related to the subject of Judaism. It comprises over 5000 entries of books, articles and dissertations published in Turkey on the subject of 'Judaism', 'Turkish Jews', and 'Zionism' from 1923 until the end of 2003. The index at the end of this bibliography, classified by subjects, names of authors, translators and advisors, will help the user to access the entries concerning his or her area of interest easily and rapidly.

RIFAT N. BALI.
Antisemitism and conspiracy theories in Turkey.
New English Paperback. Pbo. Demy 8vo. (21 x 13,5 cm). In English. 418 p. The official line that successive Turkish regimes have frequently repeated and which has firmly established itself in both Turkish and foreign public opinion is that the Republic of Turkey is one of those rare countries in which antisemitism has never taken root, and in which Jews have thus lived for centuries within a tolerant atmosphere of peace and tranquility, but it simply isn't true. Along with antisemitism are the conspiracy theories in which the "Jew" or the "Zionist" feature as the main actors that are widely seen throughout Turkish society. In fact, this state of affairs is not only pervasive but has even become "normal" to the point of banality, so much so that it tends to draw no reaction from either the country's intellectuals or politicians. This book contains a collection of author's published articles on the subject-a subject that has received no serious treatment in Turkey, and as such attempts to fill the gaping hole in our knowledge of this widespread yet rarely discussed phenomenon and, as such, stands as an indispensible source for those interested in Turkey and antisemitism.

New English Paperback. Pbo. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 17 cm). In English. 267 p., ills. th a focus on the humanitarian side of the Battle of Gallipoli. Journalist Bülent Günal compiled from 100 Vatican documents, focuses on the story of young ANZAC lieutenant and underscores the favorable attitude of the Turks for their enemies at the time of the Battle of Gallipoli. The book with a focus on the humanitarian side of the Battle of Gallipoli. Published by Kültür AS to mark the centenary of World War I, the book was inspired by the true story of a young ANZAC lieutenant and was written after secret Vatican documents were released thanks to the efforts of Rinaldo Marmara, the press secretary of Turkey's Catholic Bishops Conference and Cultural Attaché, who worked to uncover for them for three years. The book opens with historical documents that feature the correspondences between the Vatican, which was closely following the war, and its Istanbul representative, Monsieur Dolci. It then picks up momentum by featuring the family's letters to Pope Benedict XV that pleaded with him to find where lost soldiers were buried. Amid the chaos of war, Ottoman War Minister Enver Pasha paid particular attention to graves and ordered the generals to respect them, and even directly told soldiers to take care of them. Upon the request of English, French and Austrian families, the graves of dead soldiers were searched for.
