‎New English Original bdg. HC. 4to. (30 x 25 cm). In English and Turkish. [ii], 197, [12] p., color and b/w ills. 1000 copies were printed. Sürekli Hoard. Mardin, the sage of Mesopotamia, shines a light on history.= Sürekli Definesi. Mezopotamya'nin bilge sehri Mardin'den tarihi aydinlatan isik. Mardin, the luminary of Mesopotamia is a mystical city. It is an urban center that always manages to imbue a sense of mystery, both to those who are first time visitors and those who were born and raised here. Its architecture, historical legacy, original identity, natural beauty, and the deep memory and experiences it has accrued throughout its long history all combine to form an'above-ground royal treasury'. The layers of the city are accumulations of each of its memories. The footprints of ancient caravans, the rich legacy of cultures of its array of societies and the cacophony of sounds emanating from its religious ceremonies have created a tumulus-like city, both above and below-ground. It is certain that one and all are stirred by the visible remnants of the city. But this in itself is not all that affects us, for the city's 3000-year long history has also bequeathed us with an immensely rich cultural heritage. It is the accumulation of these lasting values that form Mardin's legacy to mankind. Sürekli Definesi (The lasting treasure trove) describes a human treasure whose valuable exceeds even that of gold. The book integrates both the above and below-ground faces of the treasures of Mardin, and is also important as a rich source of knowledge that sheds light on the city's past.‎

‎New Turkish Paperback. 4to. (28 x 21 cm) In Turkish. 93 p., b/w ills. and documents. "In the beginning of the 18th century in the Ottoman Empire as a result of internal unrest there occured governorship. It played an essential role in the internal politics of the state in the second half of the 18th and in the first half of the 19th century. Although the governorship was a class that developed with the activities similar to those of the feudal lords, vicegovernor, and farm owners, and were controlled by the state, it cannot be said that this establishment was completely independent of the state and had an ownership concept in a real sense of the word. Nearly all of the governors were getting their possessions when they were at the state service. This sheds light on the discussion related to the seizure of the possessions of the governors after their death or after the capital punishment due to the political reasons. The topic of this study is Haydutoglu Mehmet who was a statesman taking place in the governorship and who served as a governor in Viransehir (Safranbolu) in the Ottoman Empire. He was from the inhabitants of Kurucasile town of today's Bartin. He was punished by capital punishment and all his wealth was seized. This policy was not only applied to Haydutoglu Mehmet but to many governors and vicegovernors, and many of them were killed.".‎

‎Venetian and Ottoman Heritage in the Aegean: The Bailo House in Chalcis, Greece‎

‎, Brepols, 2020 Paperback, 296 pages, Size:220 x 280 mm, Illustrations:205 b/w, 173 col., 3 maps b/w, 30 plans, Language: English. ISBN 9782503584096.‎

‎Summary This book tells the astonishing story of a secular building and its inhabitants over six centuries and four successive civilizations. The Bailo House was constructed as a public loggia in the 14th century by Venetian officials in their Aegean colony of Negroponte on the Byzantine island of Euripos. Italian designs were followed and copied in the style of the lagoon's palaces, digging the foundations through the earlier Byzantine layers. It later housed an Ottoman official, along perhaps with his apothecary. Thereafter, it was severely damaged before passing into the hands of a local Ottoman dignitary, who completely transformed it into a typical Middle Eastern mansion. In the late 19th century it was reshaped once more with a neoclassical fa ade to conform to the European models promoted by the Modern Greek state. Extensive study, excavations and restorations over a ten-year period revealed remarkable evidence for one of the few remaining examples of secular architecture in the Eastern Mediterranean, as well as abundant and rare information about urban planning, material culture, economic and cultural exchanges, art and aesthetics, etc. It is the tale of a harbor town that was always cosmopolitan, a port of call along the Silk Road, the winter base of the Ottoman fleet, a European enclave in the East. ‎Icons in Turkey.‎

‎New New English Original bdg. Dust wrapper. Large 8vo. (23 x 21 cm). In English. 128 p., many color ills. "This volume brings together 86 Greek and Russian icons from Hagia Sophia (Ayasofya Museum) in Istanbul, Antalya Archaeological Museum, Antalya, Sinop Museum, Sinop, and Tokat Museum, Tokat. Two mosaic icons, from the Virgin Pammakaristos, which are kept in the Church of St George's at Phanar (Fener) in the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate are also included. Compared to the interest that the surviving Byzantine architecture, wall paintings and mosaics receive from Turkish and foreign scholars, the icons in Turkey are obviously neglected. There is almost no record of the icons kept in private collections. Those kept in museums need cleaning, restoration and study. Another more general reason is that icons have been regarded less important than Byzantine wall paintings or mosaics and their study has been overshadowed by them. It is only recently that a more careful study of icons began which approached them as a type by themselves, despite their close relationship close relation ship with the other arts. As far as the provenance of the icons included in this volume is concerned, some of those kept in the Ayasofya Museum are definitely known to have been brought from Russia by immigrants in the reign of Sultan Ahmet I (1603-17).".‎

‎As New English Original creme leather bdg. with special design. A Byzantine saint gilt under the window of front cover. Mint. 4to. (30 x 24 cm). In English and Turkish. [8], 282 p., 186 numerous color figures. Tatlarin: Wall paintings of churches no. I and no. II.= I ve II no'lu kiliselerin duvar resimleri. Tatlarin underground city, which was one of the most important underground cities of the Cappadocia region, could only be discovered in 1975 because its original entrance had collapsed and had gone underground to be opened to the visits of tourists in 1991. The toilet in it demonstrates that toilets were being used in Anatolia around 3000 years ago. There are many food storage areas and churches within it. It is believed to have been used as a center for religious or military purposes judging by the large size of its rooms. Only two floors of the Tatlarin underground city which has spread over a pretty large area can be visited currently, however works continue to open the other floors to visits as well. Although there is a large number of churches around and within the Tatlarin underground city which is near the Acýgöl district of the Nevþehir province a major part of them have collapsed due to natural causes. This book includes wall paintings of two of those churches, No. 1 and 2.‎

‎Leadership traits of the emperors of Ottoman ascension period: Great mantheory.‎

‎New English Paperback. Demy 8vo. (22 x 14 cm). In English. [vii], [1], 107 p., b/w ills. According to the "Great Man Theory", leaders are born with a set of specific skills and traits that makes an individual destined for a leadership position. Also known as a trait perspective to leadership, it suggests that certain individuals have special innate or inborn characteristics or qualities that differentiates them from non-leaders. Specifically, these characteristics were believed to include height, weight, appearance, intelligence, disposition and others. Furthermore, charismatic and inspirational leaders instil faith in a better future for the followers in terms of their self-expression, self-evaluation, and self-consistency. The history of Ottomans is complicated and complex in terms of its emperors from the beginning to the end, in addition to severe relations with Europe and Asia. In this sense, especially the ascension period constitutes great importance; because of the fact that the six emperors of the period turned the Ottoman State into an "Empire" with their individual traits and acts. Therefore, it is worth to consider them as "great men" and evaluate them in this frame in order to construe the claim. It is expected that this book sheds light to the future researches in terms of evaluating both the emperors of Ottoman Empire and the other World emperors in terms of great man theory.‎

‎Elemterefis: Superstitious beliefs and occult in the Ottoman Empire, (1839-1923).‎

‎New English Paperback. Pbo. Demy 8vo. (21 x 14 cm). In English. 522 p. Elemterefis: Superstitious beliefs and occult in the Ottoman Empire, (1839-1923). This book is about the social history of superstitious beliefs and especially magic and sorcery. I mainly tried to examine how superstitious beliefs and magic transformed the daily life of the Ottoman Empire into a world of superstitions in the nineteenth century. However, I had to go further back when I deepened my research into the origin of superstitious beliefs and magic seen in almost every period of the Ottoman Empire. I looked at polytheistic religions like shamanism, Animism, Manichaenism, Buddhism and Hinduism, which were the common religious beliefs of the former Turkish world. I included various other pagan religions and cultures underlying the past of the Ottoman geography over three continents as well as Judaism, Zoroastrianism, Christianity, the Sky God belief in Central Asia and finally Islam. In the Ottoman Empire, ¿professional¿ magicians were of the ulema class who were not reluctant to utilize religious knowledge for their personal interests. In fact, they began to live immorally; ¿amateur¿ magicians were composed of occult groups, a.k.a. pseudo-clergy. I followed magic and magicians included in the documents of the Prime Ministry Ottoman State Archives only as they were caught as a result of a complaint. Füsun and Efsun, daughters of Cinci Arif Hoca, and their story add local and authentic flavor to the points made in the book.‎

Pesah [i.e. Passover; Turkish: Hamursuz Bayrami] is a major Jewish holiday and one of the most widely celebrated Jewish holidays. Together with Shavuot and Sukkot, Passover was one of the Three Pilgrimage Festivals (Shalosh Regalim) during which the entire population of the kingdom of Judah made a pilgrimage to the Temple in Jerusalem. Samaritans still make this pilgrimage to Mount Gerizim, but only men participate in public worship. Nissim [or Nisim] Behar was a Rabi. Behar, whose family moved from Bursa to Istanbul Hasköy when he was very young, was sent to the Alyans School here. The family moved from Hasköy to Kuledibi in 1923. Growing up in a religious family Nisim's mother was a family known for their religiousness in Silivri, and they even got the name "Sofu" when the surname law was enacted. Tepedelenlioglu is a Turkish journalist and writer. He joined the National Struggle and started journalism in Hâkimiyet-i Milliye. While he was the editor-in-chief of Yeni Hayat magazine, he was tried and acquitted in the case of Halk Istirakiyun Firkasi. His latest articles were published in Yeni Istanbul. He was known for his historical novel titled 'Kara Davud' [i.e. Black David]. This book is a continuation of the "pen fight" between Hüseyin Cahit Yalçin, (1875-1957), and the author. These "pen fights" are in the style that has been in the tradition of Turkish literature since the Ottoman period. In this text, the author, who is ideologically conservative, harshly criticizes Hüseyin Cahit Yalçin's ideological attitude.‎

‎[EARLY TURKISH EDITION OF 'THE SEVEN BEAUTIES'] Tercüme-i hikâye-i Heft Peyker. 7 volumes set. Translated by Emin Yümnî.‎

‎Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Original cloth bdg. with traditional embossings. Foolscap 8vo. (17 x 12 cm). In Ottoman script. First Ottoman Edition. 7 volumes full set in one volumes: (112 p.; 112 p.; 111 p.; 111 p.; 111 p.; 111 p., 111 p.). Hejra: 1289 = Gregorian: 1872. Özege: 20613. Haft Paykar "The Seven Beauties" (1197) (also called Bahram-Nama). A pre-Islamic story of Persian origin, it was dedicated to the ruler of Maragha, 'Ala' Al-Din korp Arslan. It is the story of Bahram V, the Sassanid king, who is born to Yazdegerd after twenty years of childlessness and supplication to Ahura Mazda for a child. The Haft Paykar is a romanticized biography of the Sasanian Persian empire ruler Bahram Gur. His adventurous life had already been treated by Ferdowsi in the Shahnama, to which fact Nezami alludes a number of times. In general, his method is to omit those episodes that the earlier poet had treated, or to touch on them only very briefly, and to concentrate on new material. The poet starts by giving an account of the birth of Bahram Gur and his upbringing in the court of the Arab King No'man and his fabled palace Khwarnaq. Bahram whose upbringing is entrusted to Nom'man becomes a formidable huntsman. While wandering through the fabled palace, he discovers a locked room which contains a depiction of seven princesses; hence the name Haft Paykar (seven beauties). Each of these princesses is from the seven different climes (traditional Zoroastrian-Islamic division of the Earth) and he falls in love with them. His father Yazdegerd I passes away and Bahram returns to Persia to claim his throne from pretenders. After some episodes he is recognized as King and rescues the Persians from a famine. Once the country is stable, the King searches for the seven princesses and wins them as his brides. His architect is ordered to construct seven domes for each of his new brides. The architect tells him that each of the seven climes is ruled by one of the seven planets (classical planetary system of Zoroastrian-Islamic world) and advises him to assure good fortune by adorning each dome with the color that is associated with each clime and planet. Bahram is skeptical but follows the advice of the architect. The princesses take up residence in the splendid pavilions. On each visit, the king visits the princesses on successive days of the week; on Saturday the Indian princess, who is governed by Saturn and so on. The princesses names are Furak (Nurak), the daughter of the Rajah of India, as beautiful as the moon; Yaghma Naz, the daughter of the Khaqan of the Turks; Naz Pari, the daughter of the king of Khwarazm; Nasrin Nush, the daughter of the king of the Slavs; Azarbin (Azareyon), the daughter of the king of Morocco; Humay, the daughter of the Roman Caesar; and Diroste (wholesome), a beautiful Iranian princess from the House of Kay Ka'us. Each princess relates to the king a story matching the mood of her respective color. These seven beautifully constructed, highly sensuous stories occupy about half of the whole poem. While the king is busy with the seven brides, his evil minister seizes power in the realm. Bahram Gur discovers that the affairs of Persia are in disarray, the treasury is empty and the neighboring rulers are posed to invade. He clears his mind first by going hunting. After returning from hunt, he sees a suspended dog from a tree. The owner of the dog, who was shepherd, tells the story of how his faithful watchdog had betrayed his flock to a she-wolf in return for sexual favors. He starts investigating the corrupt minister and from the multitude of complaints, he selects seven who tell him the injustice they have suffered. The minister is subsequently put to death and Bahram Gur restores justice and orders the seven pleasure-domes to be converted to fire temples for the pleasure of God. Bahram then goes hunting for the last time but mysteriously disappears. As a pun on words, while trying to hunt the wild ass (gûr) he instead finds his tomb (gûr‎

‎[FIRST REPUBLICAN TURKISH THEORY ON THE REORGANIZING OF THE STOCK-EXCHANGES] Borsalarin tevhîdi meselesi hakkinda rapor. [i.e. Report on merging exchanges].‎

‎Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Paperback. Minor fading on pages. Otherwise a fine pamphlet. Original red wrappers. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 17 cm). In Ottoman script (Old Turkish in Arabic letters). 12 p. At the introduction of this treatise, the authors state that exchanges are generally divided into two and that these are collective and dispersed types. In other sections, it emphasizes how new the Turkish stock market is compared to the world stock markets and how important it is to make the arrangements carefully in this context. The origin of an organized securities market in Turkey has its roots in the second half of the 19th century. The first securities market in the Ottoman Empire was established in 1866 under the name of "Dersaadet Securities Exchange" following the Crimean War. Dersaadet Exchange also created a medium for European investors who were seeking higher returns in the vast Ottoman markets. Following the proclamation of the Turkish Republic, a new law was enacted in 1929 to reorganize the fledgling capital markets under the new name of "Istanbul Securities and Foreign Exchange Bourse". In this rare pamphlet, argued earlier this reorganization only one year ago from the new law in 1929. Nizameddin Bey was an Ottoman / Turkish clerk of the stock exchange. Mehmed Vehbi Saridal, (1886-1969), was a Turkish / Ottoman politician. He is a graduate of Istanbul Law School and Berlin University Faculty of Philosophy. He was a professor of Turkish Economics and Trade Doctrines and Social Economics. This is the first theoretical book on the reorganizing of the Republican stock exchanges after the collapse of the Ottoman Empire.
