The Anzaf fortresses and the gods of Urartu. Translation by Geoffrey D. Summers, Ayça Uzel.

The fascinating pictorial scenes on pieces of a bronze shield from a room on the west side of the Haldi Temple in the Upper Anzaf Fortress, discovered in 1995, add greatly to our knowledge of Urartian religion and art. During the fire caused by a Scyhtian attack in the late seventh century B.C. objects and weapons of bronze and iron stored in this small room became molten and distorted, a large portion turning to slag. In recent years conservation of this mass of molten metal, weighing more than 13 kilograms, a number of bronze and iron objects and weapons have been recovered and preserved for the benefit of science. In particular, seven votive rings of cast bronze with cuneiform inscriptions from the co-regency of King Ispuini, Menua and Inuspua has added much to the poorly known political history in the early period of the Urartian Kingdom. Most of the fragments of bronze sheet bearing pictorial scenes come, it has been realized from the same large shield. Conservation of the bronzes is still continuing. Conservation a 78 cm. long piece of the shield over the last three years has, however, revealed scenes of great interest that shed significant new light on our understanding of the art and, particularly, the religion of Urartu. A row of 12 gods are depicted in the same sequence as the pantheon of gods in the Meher Kapi rock inscription which provides much detailed information on the religion of Urartu. Nothing similar to the pantheon in the Meher Kapi inscription, where each god is gven his divine attributes and local characteristics, has previously been found. In its 20 anniversary Arkeoloji ve Sanat is pleased to share with its readers this valuable study which, we believe, makes an important new addition to Anatolian archaeology.

Mehmet Arif Onat Kutlar, also known as Onat Kutlar, was a prominent Turkish writer and poet, founder of the Turkish Sinematek and one of the founders of the Istanbul International Film Festival. Onat Kutlar was born in Alanya, Turkey in 1936. He was the grandson of Arif Pasha, an Ottoman governor of the Taif district and the son of Ali Riza Bey, a penal judge of the young Turkish Republic and later a farmer, and Meliha Hanim. He grew up in the city of Gaziantep. He studied law at Istanbul University and philosophy in Paris. His book, Ishak (1959), composed of nine short stories, most of which are written from the point of view of a child and are often surrealistic and mystical was the recipient of the 1960 "Turkish Language Association Short Story Award". According to the literary critic Fethi Naci, these represent a very early example of magical realism genre. In 1985, he was a member of the jury at the 35th Berlin International Film Festival. In 1994, he was awarded with L'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres and in 1975 Cultural Medal of Poland for his work in the Turkish Sinematek. He died on 11 January 1995 in Istanbul resulting from injuries sustained in bomb attack (carried out by the terror organization PKK) which occurred on 30 December 1994 at The Marmara Hotel's cafeteria in Taksim. He was laid to rest at the Asiyan Asri Cemetery. Currently, the International Federation of Film Critics (FIPRESCI) Prize in the National Competition of the Istanbul International Film Festival is named after him to commemorate his contributions to the Turkish cinema. The unity of the old urban fabric in the city of Izmir, having thousands of historical and cultural heritage, is rapidly impaired while the "city identity" is changing. Cultural assets such as forts, bastions, walls, public baths, tombs and inscriptions, bridges, aqueducts, houses, mansions, mosques, fountains and cemeteries are all, our shared memories which are worth-appreciating. Basmane and its neighborhood are famous for having intense cultural assets where historical, architectural and archaeological values are treated with great care. The number of the abondoned, moved, burned and ruined characteristics of the city, caused by the misuse or other countable reasons, are increasing day by day. Due to the unauthorized interventions by the non-experts, they are also cut off from the city's historical identity. In my book 'A Souvenir from Izmir' I intended to draw attention of the relevant institutions and organizations to the importance of the cultural assets in this region, to call the authorities for taking the necessary action for the unregistered artifacts and to help researchers in easily finding their places by giving the exact addresses of these artifacts. Because I am conscious of the fact that protecting and preserving the cultural assets is the most meaningful gift that could be left to the next generations. Hereby, I would like to thank Ayse Üngör, director of Ahmet Piristina city archive and Museum of Izmir Metropolitan Municipality, and his colleagues Gülsüm Berdan Eren, Buket Ocak, Alev Turhan, Ekrem Tükenmez, Servet Kuru for their efforts in editing, translating and publicating my book; and Asst. Prof. Dr. Oktay Gökdemir; and Bedriye Gülay Besikçi for her illustrations and old black and white photos, and finally Yunus Koç and Atilla Özdemir for photos.
