The orientation to the West in the Ottoman period started with the translation of the works of European physicians and the writing of compilation medical books from the second half of the 17th century. During this period, an important issue with regard to Turkish translation and copyrights was the lack of common terminology. In order to eliminate this deficiency, it has been deemed necessary to make a study that will ensure the use of the same terms for the same concepts in medical translations and copyrights. It was deemed appropriate to prepare a medical dictionary for this purpose and to follow the procedure of finding Ottoman equivalents to the article titles in Nysten's French medical dictionary for this dictionary. As a result of this study, during the preparation phase of the "Lügat-i Tibbiye", which was completed and published in 1290 (1874), the members of the Society of Tibbiye-i Osmaniye, in order to give the equivalents of the French medical terms, first of all, they applied to the works known as Avicenna's "The Medicine" ["Kanun fi't-tib"], Ebu'l-Kaim Zehravi's "Tasrif", Ebu Bekr er-Razi's "Havi" and other important sourcebooks of Islamic medicine. In addition, in recent times, books translated into eastern languages from western languages were also reviewed, especially the works of Sanizade [i.e. Anatomy of Sanizade] were used as well as Vankulu, Ahteri, Bûrhan-i Kâti, Lehçe, Kâmûs Tercümesi by Asim Efendi, Bianchi, Hançeri, Kazimirski, Meninsky's dictionaries. While creating new terms, Arabic and Persian were preferred to Latin and Greek, as they were more suitable for the Ottoman accent. Nel destino di quella piccola isola e dei suoi abitanti Orhan Pamuk ha ricreato un mondo, parlando al nostro presente con una forza e un'intensità che sono quelle della grande letteratura. Nell'aprile del 1901 un piroscafo si avvicina silenzioso all'isola di Mingher, «perla del Mediterraneo orientale». Dall'imbarcazione scendono due persone: il dottor Bonkowski – il maggior specialista di malattie infettive dell'Impero ottomano – e il suo assistente. Bonkowski è lì per conto del sultano: deve indagare su un nemico invisibile ma mortale, che rischia di mettere in ginocchio un Impero già da molti definito il «grande malato d'Europa» e innescare così una reazione a catena nei delicatissimi equilibri continentali. Sull'isola di Mingher, si dice, c'è la peste. Il morbo viene rapidamente confermato, ma imporre le corrette misure sanitarie rappresenta la vera sfida, soprattutto quando le esigenze della scienza e della medicina più nuova si scontrano con le credenze religiose. In quest'isola multiculturale dove musulmani e cristiani ortodossi cercano di convivere pacificamente, la malattia funge da acceleratore delle tensioni sociali e non solo: poco dopo aver parlato con il governatore e chiesto che venga imposta la quarantena, il corpo del dottor Bonkowski viene trovato senza vita in un vicolo. In un drammatico crescendo la peste dilaga, spingendo le autorità a rafforzare le misure di contenimento: queste però aumentano le frizioni tra le varie identità dell'isola (e dell'Impero), tra chi le asseconda e chi nega l'esistenza stessa della malattia, o l'efficacia della quarantena, gettando la comunità nelle tenebre di una notte non soltanto sanitaria. "Le notti della peste" è un'opera-mondo grandiosa, universale, attraversata da echi di Tolstoj, di Manzoni, del Conrad di Nostromo, di Camus. Romanzo storico e allegorico (tra le righe si legge la deriva di ogni nazionalismo verso l'autocrazia dell'uomo forte), brulicante di personaggi e di storie, di guerre, amori e immortali tensioni etiche. In cui il particolare – le esistenze dei singoli individui travolti dalla Storia – si apre all'universale – il rapporto tra paura e potere, tra vita e destini generali, tra fede e ragione, tra modernità e tradizione.

Ka inizia la sua indagine, mentre la neve continua a cadere e le strade vengono chiuse. Kars è isolata. In città, Ka rivede dopo diversi anni Ipek, una compagna di università molto bella. Ka se ne innamora e sogna di portarla con sé in Germania. Per realizzare questo sogno, farà di tutto. La situazione precipita quando una compagnia di teatro mette in scena un dramma degli anni Venti, scritto in sostegno della laicità dello Stato fondato da Atatùrk, dove una donna, coraggiosamente, brucia il chador in pubblico. Durante lo spettacolo alcuni giovani del liceo religioso inscenano una protesta. E la serata finisce nel sangue. Ka viene coinvolto suo malgrado. È uno spettatore imparziale, ma molto confuso. Non sa nemmeno rispondere alla domanda: credi in Dio? Sostiene che a Kars ha ritrovato Allah, ma poi l'unica cosa che gli interessa è la ricerca, molto occidentale, della felicità. Il dilemma di Ka ruota intorno al confronto tra Occidente e Islam.

[MYANMAR / MANUSCRIPT / BUDDHISM / ASTROLOGY] [A long and richly illustrated parabaik in Pali written in Burmese round script].
Very Good Burmese Original dark brown leather with embossing on the front board with an initial-like symbol. The black script in ink with several pencil annotations on rectangular pieces of thick hand-made mulberry paper. Closed size: 38x12,5 cm. Open size: 550x38 cm. Text in Pali, written in Burmese "round" script, richly illustrated in red, black, white, and yellow from the most influential Buddhist and astrological texts of the region. Well-preserved and in very good condition. Extremely rare example of one of the longest and a richly illustrated parabaik from Burma, "reflecting an old system of Theravardan magical beliefs pertaining to Burma / Myanmar over 100 years ago". A highly collectible item from the pre-colonial period of the Konbaung dynasty, formerly known as the Alompra dynasty, the Third Burmese Empire, the last dynasty that ruled Burma/Myanmar from 1752 to 1885, Buddhist Myanmar. With its open size, it is extremely rare in length with 44 folds; "The longest one would have 64 folds" (Harvard online). The scenes might show episodes from the Buddhist folk tales popular in Burma towards the end of the 19th century including many ancient tables and ca. 40 specific depictions of Buddha's life, Buddhist practices, some historical scenes, and religious practices like sky burial scenes, etc, as well as astrological and astronomical chapters. Folding-book manuscripts (Parabaiks in Burmese) are a type of writing material historically used in Mainland Southeast Asia, particularly in the areas of present-day Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, and Cambodia. The manuscripts are made of thick paper, usually of the Siamese rough bush (Khoi in Thai and Lao) tree or the paper mulberry, glued into a very long sheet and folded in a concertina fashion, with the front and back lacquered to form protective covers or attached to decorative wood covers. The unbound books are made in either white or black varieties, with the paper being undyed in the former and blackened with soot or lacquer in the latter. Along with paper made from bamboo and palm leaves, parabaik were the main medium for writing and drawing in early modern Burma/Myanmar.
