The 1877-78 Russo-Turkish War, known in Turkish sources by its Rumi date: '93 Harbi, has been thoroughly studied through political and military lenses. The mass exodus of hundreds of thousands of Ottoman subjects before the advancing Russian armies was a major humanitarian calamity, one with possibly more long-term historical consequences than the mere shifting of borders. Despite its significance, it has received relatively humble attention in the pages of history. This book attempts to illuminate a lesser known aspect of this subject, in particular, the general voluntary relief efforts on the part of the British people for the Ottoman refugees (the '93 Refugees). This book covers the activities of both the institutions and the prominent figures of this endeavor, against the background of humanitarian diplomacy. In doing so, it provides the reader with an intimate look into a "compassionate" episode in late 19th century Anglo-Ottoman history.

Serab Abahouni was a Turkish teacher of Armenian origin who serviced in the Ottoman Idadiye, Mülkiye, and Naval schools in Smyrna (Izmir). She wrote many textbooks in this period especially for the Naval School including learning French for Turkish naval students and French alphabet books. This book is one of them and it includes interesting short biographies of the first ten Ottoman Sultans. On the front cover, there's an indication as "Vendu au profit de la Flotte Ottomane" [i.e. Sold for the benefit of the Ottoman Fleet]. Not in OCLC.

"After an introduction of the historical background of the Christian art in Cappadocia the book deals with the architecture and paintings of the Karanlik Kilise, popularly known as the Dark Church, situated in the Göreme valley. The church and its paintings date from mid-tenth century. These wall paintings are known as the best-surviving examples of the late Byzantine art. In addition to the description of all of the major wall paintings in Karanlik Kilise, the Byzantine painting tradition of the period has also been dealt with. The consistency of its repertoire, style and colours indicate that the decoration of the Dark Church was done at a single phase of painting and immediately after it was excavated. Although there is no document surviving about the way that the Cappadocian rock-churches were decorated, the Middle Byzantine literature is rich enough to construct the general progress of the work. The paintings of the Dark Church were applied on a dry plaster of lime mixed with tufa and sand and with chopped straw as a binder. The only areas where this technique (secco or dry fresco) was replaced by the fresco technique were the heads of the figures of Christ, the Virgin and St John the Baptist in the main apse.".

Devsirme also known as the blood tax or tribute in blood, was chiefly the annual practice by which the Ottoman Empire sent military to abduct boys, sons of their Christian subjects in the villages of the Balkans and Anatolia. They were then converted to Islam with the primary objective of selecting and training the ablest children for the military or civil service of the Empire, notably into the Janissaries. Started by Murad I as a means to counteract the growing power of the Turkish nobility, the practice itself violated Islamic law. Yet by 1648, the practice was slowly drawing to an end. An attempt to re-institute it in 1703 was resisted by its Ottoman members who coveted its military and civilian posts.
