Projecting the nation: European states in the 1920s and 1930s.= Ulusu tasarlamak: 1920'ler ve 1930'larda Avrupa devletleri. [Exhibition catalogue].
New English Paperback. 4to. (26 x 20 cm). In English and Turkish. 330, [2] p., fully color and b/ ills. Projecting the nation: European states in the 1920s and 1930s.= Ulusu tasarlamak: 1920'ler ve 1930'larda Avrupa devletleri. [Exhibition catalogue]. At a time when the boundaries of Europe and the future of European modernity are contested once again in the face of Turkey's candidacy to the European Union, the publication Projecting the Nation offers a critical reflection on the recent past of Europe. Focusing on the multiple and competing modernities of the 1920s and 1930s, a period which also saw the dawn of Turkish modernity, the exhibition explores how nations were invented and shaped by state power. In the age of mass politics, visual political culture - itself a product of modern technology - took on a fundamental role in creating and molding mass consensus. For European states, in this era of competing ideologies and exacerbated nationalism, self-exhibition was no longer restricted to a message of authority and legitimacy targeting the cultural elite. It now became a crucial and novel element of statecraft, a cultural offensive grounded in propaganda, and a source of self-legitimation for political power. In all circumstances, the ultimate stake was control over mass culture. Highlighting strong instances of self-exhibition in the Soviet Union, Fascist Italy, Nazi Germany, Kemalist Turkey, interwar France and conflict-torn Spain, Projecting the Nation presents a cross-territorial examination of the similarities, differences and borrowings of forms of modernity unbound. EUROPEANA Exhibition Collection State European social / political history International relations.

SARA BOZZA.
Hierapolis di Frigia XIV: Architettura Ionica a Hierapolis di Frigia.
New Italian Original bdg. HC. Folio. (31 x 22 cm). In Italian with Turkish summaries. 400 p., numerous color ills. Scott Alev
Ottoman Odyssey: Travels through a Lost Empire
8vo, br. ed. Alev Scott's odyssey began when she looked beyond Turkey's borders for contemporary traces of the Ottoman Empire. Their 800-year rule ended a century ago - and yet, travelling through twelve countries from Kosovo to Greece to Palestine, she uncovers a legacy that's vital and relevant; where medieval ethnic diversity meets 21st century nationalism, and displaced people seek new identities. It's a story of surprises. An acolyte of Erdogan in Christian-majority Serbia confirms the wide-reaching appeal of his authoritarian leadership. A Druze warlord explains the secretive religious faction in the heart of the Middle East. The palimpsest-like streets of Jerusalem's Old Town hint at the Ottoman co-existence of Muslims and Jews. And in Turkish Cyprus Alev Scott rediscovers a childhood home. In every community, history is present as a dynamic force.Faced by questions of exile, diaspora and collective memory, Alev Scott searches for answers from the cafes of Beirut to the refugee camps of Lesbos. She uncovers in Erdogan's nouveau-Ottoman Turkey a version of the nostalgic utopias sold to disillusioned voters in Europe and the U.S

Scott Alev
Turkish Awakening: Behind the Scenes of Modern Turkey. New and Updated edition
br. ed. When Alev Scott moved to Istanbul to explore her family's heritage, she didn't know what to expect from this colorful nation at the edge of the Middle East. By travelling around the country and talking to everyone from art dealers to camel breeders, Alex began to piece together a picture of modern Turkey. Moving from booming Istanbul to the historically diverse villages of the south-east, and caught up in the protests of 2013, Alev saw from the inside how constantly surprising this remarkable country can be. Turkish Awakening is essential reading for anyone travelling to, or simply interested in, this rapidly-evolving nation. This updated paperback edition includes an additional chapter on the aftermath of the 2013 Gezi Park protests. About the Author: Alev Scott was born in London in 1987 to a Turkish mother and a British father, and educated at North London Collegiate School and New College, Oxford, where she studied Classics. After graduating in 2009, she worked in London as an assistant director in theatre and opera before moving to Istanbul in January 2011, where she now works as a freelance journalist for the British press.

Seal Rebecca
Istanbul.

In 1857 photographer Pascal J. Sébah opened a studio in Constantinople, today Istanbul, Turkey. Photographing city views, daily activities, and ancient ruins in the surrounding area, Sébah sold many of his prints to visiting tourists, a prosperous and common market for other contemporary photographers, such as the well-known Abdullah Frères. Tourists would select a range of prints from professional photo studies in the countries they visited and compile a travel album of their journey. In 1888, two years after Pascal J. Sébah passed away, his 16-year-old son Jean (Johannes) became involved in the studio work. Jean started a partnership with another photographer from Istanbul, the Frenchman Policarpe Joaillier, which became a great success. Jean worked both on assignments for the studio and as an individual photographer, which can be determined from the signatures on the works: some prints were signed "Sébah & Joaillier," and others have the signature "J.P. Sébah" The studio flourished and Sébah & Joaillier were named as the official photographers of the Ottoman Empire by the Turkish sultan. In the early 1900s, Joaillier returned to Paris and Sébah continued his work in Constantinople. After different partnerships, the studio was taken over by Ismail Insel and renamed "Foto Sabah" [i.e. Photo Morning].

SEBASTIAN JAMES.
The expected awakening in Turkey: A call to confession for the churches of Turkey.= Beklenen uyanis: Uyanis için Türkiye'deki kiliselere itiraf çagrisi.
New English Paperback. Cr. 8vo. (20 x 14 cm). In English and Turkish. 136 p. The expected awakening in Turkey: A call to confession for the churches of Turkey.= Beklenen uyanis: Uyanis için Türkiye'deki kiliselere itiraf çagrisi. This country is still the largest 'unreached' country in the world. However, a spiritual awakening in the country is possible and spiritual growth in the church can happen. The Bible is very clear on what needs to take place in Turkey, and the remedy is not difficult. This exhortation is written for the churches in Turkey, it is the single most important document I have ever written, and I truly believe that the life of the church and the nation depends on your individual response to this Biblical mandate, along with the response of your local church, and the churches in Turkey as a whole. Many have wondered if there is a real and present curse upon Turkey. We will look at the one obstacle that is hindering the church from spiritual and numerical growth and God's remedy to lift this apparent curse.

It was published in a number of editions over a half century and was continuously revised and updated to include new illustrations and updated information. Sebastian Münster (1488-1552) was a cosmographer and professor of Hebrew who taught at Tübingen, Heidelberg, and Basel. He settled in the latter in 1529 and died there, of plague, in 1552. As a young man, Münster joined the Franciscan order and studied philosophy in Heidelberg. He also studied geography and mathematics in Loewen, as well as Hebrew at Freiburg. In 1512, he was ordained as a priest and taught philosophy and theology at Tübingen from 1514 to 1518. While in Tübingen, he also conducted further studies in geography. He moved to Basel in 1518 and published a Hebrew grammar, one of the first books in Hebrew published in Germany. In 1521 Münster moved again, back to Heidelberg, where he continued to publish Hebrew texts and the first German-produced books in Aramaic. After converting to Protestantism in 1529, he took over the chair of Hebrew at Basel, where he published his main Hebrew work, a two-volume Old Testament with a Latin translation. Münster made himself the center of a large network of scholars from whom he obtained geographic descriptions, maps, and directions. He published his first known map, a map of Germany, in 1525. Three years later, he released a treatise on sundials. In 1540, he published Geographia universalis vetus et nova, an updated edition of Ptolemy's Geographia. In addition to the Ptolemaic maps, Münster added 21 modern maps. One of Münster's innovations was to include one map for each continent, a concept that would influence Ortelius and other early atlas makers. The Geographia was reprinted in 1542, 1545, and 1552. Münster is best known today for his Cosmographia universalis, the first German-language description of the world. It was first published in 1554 and contained 471 woodcuts and 26 maps over 6 volumes. Many of the maps were taken from the Geographia and modified over time. It was released in at least 46 editions in 6 languages by 1650, with 21 German editions alone. The Cosmographia was widely used in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries and the text, woodcuts, and maps all influenced geographical thought for generations.".
