Hilye-i Hakanî. AH: 1307 = AD: 1890. The term hilya denotes both a visual form in Ottoman art and a religious genre of Ottoman Turkish literature each dealing with the physical description of Muhammad. Hilya literally means "ornament". They originate with the discipline of shama'il the study of Muhammad's appearance and character based on hadith accounts most notably Tirmidhi's al-Shama'il al-Muhamadiyyah wa al-Khasa'il al-Mustafawiyyah "The Sublime Characteristics of Muhammad". In Ottoman-era folk Islam there was a belief that reading and possessing Muhammad's description protects the person from trouble in this world and the next it became customary to carry such descriptions rendered in fine calligraphy and illuminated as amulets. In 17th-century Ottoman Turkey hilyes developed into an art form with a standard layout often framed and used as a wall decoration. Later hilyes were also written for the first four Caliphs the companions of Muhammad Muhammad's grandchildren Hasan and Hussein and Islamic saints walis. Mehmed Hakani Beg's 'Hilye' is one of the first example of the 'hilye' literature in the Turkish / Ottoman world. Özege 7631.; Not in TBTK It has earlier and later editions.

N. p. In Ottoman script. Mehmed Said Pasha was an Ottoman monarchist senator statesman and editor of the Turkish newspaper Jerid-i-Havadis. He supported the CUP the political party which came to power after the Ottoman coup d'état of 1913. His origin comes from 'Sebazâde family' from Ankara. He became first secretary to Sultan Abdul Hamid II shortly after the Sultan's accession and is said to have contributed to the realizations of his majesty's design of concentrating power in his own hands; later he became successively minister of the interior and then governor of Bursa reaching the high post of grand vizier in 1879. He was grand vizier seven more times under Abdul Hamid II and once under his successor Mehmed V. He was known for his opposition to the extension of foreign influence in Turkey. n 1896 he took refuge at the British embassy in Constantinople and though then assured of his personal liberty and safety remained practically a prisoner in his own house. He came into temporary prominence again during the revolution of 1908. On 22 July he succeeded Mehmed Ferid Pasha as grand vizier but on the 6 August was replaced by the more liberal Kâmil Pasha at the insistence of the Young Turks. Also during 1908 Mehmed Said Pasha bought the famed Istanbul arcade in the Beyoglu Pera district today known as Çiçek Pasaji "Flower Passage". The modern name became common in the 1940s; during Mehmed Said Pasha's ownership in the 1900s and 1910s the arcade was known as Sait Pasa Pasaji "Said Pasha Passage". During the Italian crisis in 1911-12 he was again called to the premiership. He was again removed from power by the Savior Officers who backed the Freedom and Accord Party Liberal Union against the Committee of Union and Progress and replaced by a new cabinet supported by the Officers and the Freedom and Accord Party. The CUP would return to power however the next year after the Ottoman coup d'état of 1913. Source: Wikipedia. Seven lines on special paper with watermark 'Joynson Superfine'. He is known as the first translator of Dante's Divine Comedy into modern Greek. Musurus Pasha had an intellectual identity. One of the most important occupations of Musurus Pasha in the last years was the translation of Dante's Divine Comedy from Italian to Greek. Being able to translate a work of Italian classics and masterpieces of western literature should be an indication of Musurus Pasha's performance and intellectual dimension. Due to negative statements about Muhammad and Ali in Dante's work the book was not allowed to be published within the Ottoman Imperial borders. Despite this Musurus Pasha asked him to be permitted to publish his translation but it was not accepted. Source: Bir Tanzimat diplomati Kostaki Musurus Pasa 1807-1891. NURDAN SAFAK. Otherwise a good copy. There were several restrictions upon the travelling inside the state during the Ottoman Period. Both local residents and foreigners had to get some official documents called as "yol hükmü hereafter the route pass" in 16th century and "Mürur Tezkiresi hereafter the trip permission" in the 19th century to travel inside the state. The administrators of the settlements in which the visitors would pass were assigned with authorities in the route passes. In this regard administrators were ordered to help the ambassadors of the foreign states traders religious people to protect them and not to disturb them with such reasons as collecting taxes as well as to assist them in getting food and drinks. In the trip permissions the information on the name of the father nationality address and travelling route of the travellers were included. During the period in which the photos didn't exist or weren't prevalent some information on the age height and physical descriptions beard moustache eye color etc. were included in the document. The owners of the trip permissions would show the documents to the local administrators or officers upon their arrival and the authorities would stamp signed and dated the back of the documents while they were leaving the settlement. In those regions where epidemics were occuring the back of the travellers' documents were written that they didn't have any diseases while leaving the state. The "mürur" trip permission was redesigned along with the modern state organization structured by II. Mahmud period. Passport regulations inside the country were institutionalized thanks to "Mürur Nizamnameleri" in this period in which there weren't official passport regulations in practice. The Rum Riots in 1820s and the abolition of Janissary corps of the Ottoman Empire in 1826 affected the mürur practices and its supervision. Following the Rum Riots there were some claims that several spies existed among the Rums in Istanbul so the Rums who lived in the settlements of Istanbul were made to pay bail after their numbers were determined. It was especially declared that those without the trip permission couldn't enter Istanbul and even couldn't go to Anatolia. In addition to the Rum Riotsan emergency state was declared due to the start of Janissary corps' riot and a great number of Janissary were killed or exiled. On the other hand it was thought that those exiled out of the state might try to come back as they were accustomed to earning their life in Istanbul and so "Mürur Nizami" practices were put into effect. Those using ferries or sailing ships on the other hand needed to submit their passports to the captains in order to get a permission form pusula in return for it. After the captains delivered the passports to the officers those who came to Istanbul would get their passports back in 24 hours while those outside Istanbul would submit the permission form and take their passports. If they intended to stay they had to predicate where and how long they will stay. When the visitors couldn't submit their passports or give a reasonable excuse they would be deported from the Ottoman territories. In the event of determining a fake passport or travel document those would be deported following the contacting with the diplomatic representatives of the other countries. Those who showed their passports wished to stay in the Ottoman Territories needed to get a residence permit from the diplomatic representatives . Meclis-i Mebûsân The Chamber of Deputies of the Ottoman Empire was the lower house of the General Assembly the Ottoman Parliament. Unlike to the upper house the Senate the members of the Chamber of Deputies were elected by the general Ottoman populace although suffrage was limited to males of a certain financial standing among other restrictions that varied over the Chamber's lifetime. The Second Constitutional Era of the Ottoman Empire began shortly after Abdul Hamid II was forced to restore the constitutional monarchy after the 1908 Young Turk Revolution. The period established many political groups and parties. Ahmet Riza became the first President of the Chamber in 1908. An amendment in 1909 to the original 1876 constitution resulted in the Chamber gaining more true political power at the expense of the non-democratically elected Senate and the Sultan. A series of elections during this period resulted in the gradual ascendance of the Committee of Union and Progress's CUP domination in politics. ‎MUSTAFA HALIM [OZYAZICI], (Ottoman / Turkish calligrapher), (1898-1964).‎

‎Halim Özyazici Mesk Tipki Basim Eserler Serisi - 1. REPRINT EDITION. Prep. by Murat Kiliç.‎

‎Istanbul: Maçka Konagi Sanat Merkezi 2014. Soft cover. As New. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. Original decorative brown bdg. with embossing. Large demy8vo. 22 x 16 cm. Introduction in Modern Turkish; facsimile plates in original Ottoman script. 40 p. Halim Özyazici Mesk Tipki Basim Eserler Serisi - 1. REPRINT EDITION. Prep. by Murat Kiliç. Mustafa Halim Özyazici was an Ottoman calligrapher and one of the last of the classical Ottoman calligraphers using the Arabic script. He was a versatile calligrapher with a high level of expertise in many styles of script but was widely regarded as a master jeli-thuluth. He is most noted for his work on various restoration projects of both manuscripts and public buildings. He was born Mustafa Abdülhalim on 14 January 1898 in the Hazeki district of Istanbul. He was the son of Nalinci Haci Cemâl Efendi originally from Crimea and his mother was Sudanese. He was educated at Gülsen Junior High School where he was given lessons in calligraphy by Hamid Aytaç who recognised his talent and encouraged him to pursue calligraphy as a career. He later studied drawing and sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts in Istanbul. His formal calligraphy studies were with Hasan Riza Effendi 1849-1920 and Kamil Akdik 1862-1941 where he mastered the thuluth nasih and riqâ scripts. In 1916 he was drafted into the Army. After completing basic training he worked in the Military Printing Department and also worked in Evkâf-i Islâmiyye Printing Press. Following his discharge from the Army in 1924 he opened an office in Bâbiâli Street The Sublime Porte where he prepared all types of calligraphy; business cards seals and book covers. He also taught in various schools around the Cagaloglu district of Istanbul. From 1927 he was employed in the Imperial Chancery. When the Latin alphabet replaced Arabic lettering in 1928 he applied to go to Egypt where classical calligraphy using Arabic script was still valued but his application was rejected in 1929. He subsequently abandoned calligraphy altogether. However during the 1940s his skills in classical calligraphy found an outlet when he became part of a major restoration project which worked on repairs to numerous manuscripts in a variety of styles and the restoration of calligraphic reliefs and monumental art in historic public buildings including many mosques. In 1948 he was appointed to the position of 'old writing teacher' at the Academy of Fine Arts in Istanbul; a position he retained until his retirement in 1963. One of his responsibilities was to write the diplomas for those who were about to graduate from the Academy. He died on 30 September 1964 ten days after being involved in a traffic accident. He was buried in the Kozlu Cemetery. Although he developed expertise in many different types of script he was regarded as a master of jeli-thuluth script. He wrote a number of exercise books for students to practice scripts in nesih thuluth-nesih riq'a diwânî and jeli diwânî and which were part of a program designed to promote the art of calligraphy. These books are still being printed and distributed to students of calligraphy.

Maçka Konagi Sanat Merkezi paperback‎

‎[MESSRS I CAMONDO ET CIE ON BEHALF OF [PROBABLY] MOISE DE CAMONDO, (Ottoman Empire-born French banker, art collector and philant‎

‎Autograph letter signed.‎

‎Constantinople: I. Camondo & Cie Constantinople Letterhead. 17 Janvier 1901 1901. No Binding. Very Good. Original autograph letter signed ALS by P.pon "We hereby declare that Ms. L. Cassinelli occupied our house located in Pera Rue Hodja Ali No 19. On December 1 1887 and left him on September 30 1899. That during all time he did not pay me the tax. P. pon de la succession de feu le Comte A. de Camondo. i.e. On behalf of the succession of Count Abraham Salomon Camondo 1781-1873. Probably it's signed by his advocate of Moise de Camondo. Recipient is not defined. Letter indicates one of Camondo family's houses in Pera Constantinople. 265x21 cm. Completely in French. 14 lines. On a paper watermarked "William Brown & Co. London". William Brown and Co. were located in London in this 'St. Mary Axe and 40 to 41 Old Broad Street London E.C.' address according to Grace's guide to British industrial industry; they worked on 'Lithographic and Letterpress Printers'. 1887 Registered as a Limited Company. Count Moïse de Camondo 1860-1935 was an Ottoman Empire-born French banker and art collector. He was a member of the prominent Camondo family. As a child Camondo moved with his family from their home in Constantinople Ottoman Empire to Paris around 1869 where he grew up and continued the career of his father Nissim de Camondo 1830-1889 as a banker. He was born into a Sephardic Jewish family that owned one of the largest banks in the Ottoman Empire established in France since 1869. Starting in 1911 he completely rebuilt the family's Parisian mansion on the Parc Monceau in order to house his collection of 18th-century French furniture and artwork. Working closely with the architect René Sergent he created a palatial home conforming to certain 18th-century traditions even planning the room dimensions to match exactly the objects in his collection. The entryway is inspired by the Petit Trianon of Versailles. The home includes a kosher kitchen with separate sections for meat and dairy. The dining room includes a beautifully-carved green marble fountain in the shape of a shell with a dolphin spigot for the ritual washing of hands before eating a meal. Some highlights of his collection include a French silver service that had been ordered by Russian Empress Catherine the Great a set of Buffon porcelain with exact reproductions of ornithological drawings from the Sèvres manufacturer and perhaps the only existing complete set of Gobelin royal tapestry sketches. He married Irène Cahen d'Anvers daughter of Louis Cahen d'Anvers in 1891. They separated in August 1897 after her affair with de Camondo's stable master Count Charles Sampieri whom she would later marry and divorce. The children Nissim and Beatrice remained with de Camondo. The mansion was completed in 1914 but his son did not reside there very long as he rejoined the French Army to fight in The Great War. It had been de Camondo's great hope that his son whom he adored would take over the family empire. Following Nissim's death in 1917 de Camondo closed all banking activities. He largely withdrew from society and devoted himself primarily to his collection and to hosting dinners for a club of gourmets at regular intervals. Camondo died in 1935 and the museum opened the following year. He donated the home to Paris's Decorative Arts society as a museum Musée Nissim de Camondo in honor of the loss of his son Nissim in World War I. In addition to the collection the meticulously-restored service areas elevator and woodwork of the mansion are noteworthy. During the German occupation of France during World War II his daughter Béatrice his son-of-law Léon Reinach and their children Fanny and Bertrand were deported from France and died in the Auschwitz concentration camp. As a result the de Camondo family died out.

I. Camondo & Cie, Constantinople Letterhead., 17 Janvier 1901 unknown‎
