‎Çarsi ressamlari: Osmanli tasvir sanatlari: 2. [= Bazaar painters: Ottoman figurative arts 2]. Edited by Tülün Degirmenci, M. Sabri Koz. [EDITION in TURKISH].‎

‎New New English Original bdg. Dust wrapper. 4to. (29 x 23 cm). Edition in Turkish. 248 p., color ills. Çarsi ressamlari: Osmanli tasvir sanatlari: 2. [= Bazaar painters: Ottoman figurative arts 2]. Edited by Tülün Degirmenci, M. Sabri Koz. Coining the phrase 'bazaar painters' in a 1985 article, Metin And enriched our art history terminology with a new concept as well as offer a glimpse into the world of these artists: how they worked, what they drew, where their works are today and how they contribute to our study of history of art and culture. He continued to promote and popularise their work through books and articles published until 2007, at times repeating earlier content as required. Bazaar painters and their work were not initially identified as a distinctive genre; Franz Taeschner, the first researcher to publish a selection, felt no need to refer to them as anything other than 'miniatures'. Challenging this trend, Metin And set about the immensely difficult task of obtaining pictures of bazaar painting albums from four corners of the globe in order to illustrate a prolific series of essays and books. The second volume of Ottoman Figurative Arts, Bazaar Painters consists of twelve articles published between 1985 and 2007, a comprehensive introduction by Tülün Degirmenci, and a concise album. The pictures and inscriptions Metin And chased enthusiastically all his life are but the echoing footsteps of a book, one that was either never written, or somehow got lost before it could be published.‎

‎The prisoners of war in the Red Crescent archive documents.= Kizilay arsivi belgelerinde savas esirleri.‎

‎New New English Original bdg. Dust wrapper. Folio. (31 x 22 cm). In English, Turkish and Arabic. 303 p., photos, ills. and documents. The prisoners of war in the Red Crescent archive documents.= Kizilay arsivi belgelerinde savas esirleri. The Turkish Red Crescent (Kizilay, formerly Hilâl-i Ahmer) is a charity organization founded during the late Ottoman period on the model of the Red Cross societies. Its activities in the areas of medicine, care for prisoners of war, and other social services, particularly during the World War I period and the early years of the Turkish Republic, make the archives of this organization a vital resource for historians interested in medicine, public health, war, and charity alike during this formative period. The Red Crescent archives contain a variety of documents pertaining to health and health services in the Ottoman Empire and Republican Turkey. For the Ottoman period (including World War I), these documents almost exclusively concern budget and funding issues along with services pertaining to war, particularly the 1877-78 Russo-Ottoman War (93 Harbi), the Italian invasion of Libya, the Balkan Wars, and of course, the First World War. There is very little overlap between the collections of the Ottoman archives and the Red Crescent. In addition to offering a glimpse at late Ottoman medical institutions, social historians of the Ottoman Empire will also be drawn to documentation regarding Ottoman prisoners of war, which includes letters about and by Ottoman soldiers. The Red Crescent boasts over 300,000 POW cards from all sides of the conflict containing the names and origins of prisoners, their place of capture, and sometimes other biographical or health information. The collection also contain letters and requests from prisoners of war during the conflict. In this regard, researchers of other regions such as Europe or South Asia will find these archives useful as the Red Crescent was the intermediary between the Allies and Allied prisoners held in Ottoman territories...‎

‎Bargaining between Islam and Kemalism: An investigation of official Islam through Friday sermons.‎

‎New English Paperback. Demy 8vo. (21 x 14 cm). In English. 206 p. Bargaining between Islam and Kemalism: An investigation of official Islam through Friday sermons. "The main objective of this book is to explore the Turkish state's attempt to regulate Islam through an analysis of the regulation of Friday sermons in Turkey. Drawing on the records of disciplinary measures implemented by the Presidency of Religious Affairs (PRA) and in-depth interviews conducted with imams in Turkey, the thesis argues that the Republic developed strategies to realize a state centralization of religion. This is corroborated by the high compliance rate of imams with the content of the sermons prepared by the PRA in the absence of serious inspection mechanisms until relatively recently. The complians of imams to the sermons delivered by the state implies that a distinct (nation-)statist disposition has been approved by the imams themselves as well, and hence that he republic has managed to create the 'republican' imams.".‎

‎Islamic art and modernism: Formal elements in painting, architecture and film.‎

‎As New English Paperback. Demy 8vo. (21 x 14 cm). In English. 173 p., ills. Islamic art and modernism: Formal elements in painting, architecture and film. "Much has been written about the workshop structure and the role of the Sultan, Emperor or Emir in commissioning works of painting or architecture in the history of Islamic art and contradiction to the ideas of the last two centuries in the West, where the individual artist is credited with making a conceptual statement while working alone. The reality presented here is somewhere in the middle - individual poets, artists and architects play a prominent role historically in Islamic art while the position off the Ruler is also extremely valuable and stylistically relevant. The movement of artists and architects to cities that are centers of a particular style, movement or patronage was common throughout history and the interchange in Ottoman and Safavid-Persian and Mughal and Deccani India are examples of methods and techniques spreading, developing, influencing and changing regional trends. In this study, selected paintings, buildings andd films that cross genres, styles and dynastic periods are explored in both a socio-historical context and, more importantly, in terms of their striking formal innovations. It is a thematic new look at how we position Islamic art - how it in fact embodies, exemplifies and invents many aspects of Modernism in Painting and Architecture and Film.".‎

‎New English Original bdg. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 17 cm). In English, Turkish; and Macedonian, Albanian, Serbian. 2 volumes set: (752 p. 730 p.). Proceedings of the Fourth International Congress on Islamic Civilisation in the Balkans, 12-17 October 2010. Skopje, Macedonia.= Balkanlar'da Islâm Medeniyeti Dördüncü Milletlerarasi Kongre Tebligleri, 13-17 Ekim 2010. Üsküp, Makedonya. This is a collection of the papers that were presented during the international congress on "Islamic Civilisation in the Balkans" held in the Macedonian capital Skopje in October 2010. The congress, organized in cooperation with the Macedonian Academy of Sciences and Arts (MANU), was fourth in IRCICA's congress series that focus on the history and cultures of the Balkan region. The Skopje congress was accorded high patronage and opened by H.E. Gjorge Ivanov, President of the Republic Macedonia. President Ivanov also participated in the congress in his capacity as an academician and presented a paper. This State support and scholarly contribution extended to the congress underscored the importance attached to its objectives. The first volume contains the papers that were presented in English or Turkish (39 papers) and the second volume, those presented in Macedonian, Albanian or Serbian (44 papers). Located at crossroads between Europe and Western Asia, the Balkan peoples have been in contact with the Muslim world since at least the 8th century. Various phenomena, including the long experience in trade between the two regions, helped fasten the expansion process, and enhance the notable cultural role, of Islam in the Balkans. The relationship between the Muslim world and the Balkans has not only been one of encounters and exchanges but also one of coexistence. Research papers contributed to the congress addressed a wide range of topics highlighting the multicultural relations specific to the Balkan region. IRCICA's engagement in studies on the region in connection with the history of Islamic civilisation draws from the above aspects of the theme and also takes into account that two Balkan countries are members of the OIC and IRCICA: Albania is a full Member State and Bosnia and Herzegovina is an Observer State. Previously, three congresses were held on the same theme, in Sofia (2000), Tirana (2003) and Bucharest (2006) respectively. A fifth congress was held in May 2015. This program devoted to the history of Islamic civilization in the Balkans has succeeded in drawing interest and participation from around the world in addition to the Balkan countries themselves and generated a fascinating range of studies, as the contents of this publication reflect.‎

‎New English Original bdg. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 17 cm). In English, Turkish and Arabic. 476 p. Proceedings of the International Symposium on Islamic Civilisation in Southern Africa, 31 August - 3 September 2006. This book resulted from the symposium on "Islamic Civilisation in Southern Africa" which was held in Johannesburg, Republic of South Africa, on 31 August-3 September 2006. It was co-organised by IRCICA, Awqaf Foundation of South Africa (Awqaf SA) and the University of Johannesburg. The symposium was a landmark event, first to be co-organised by the OIC and IRCICA in the region. It aimed, among others, to increase knowledge on the history and heritage of Islam in the OIC Member States and their neighbours in the region, and to promote dialogue amongst Muslim peoples in the region and with peoples of other faiths and cultures. After the opening addresses, the book contains the keynote article by Mahomed Haroon, titled "Southern African Muslim Communities in Context and Scholarship". Then come six articles under the section title Historical Background, five articles under Challenge of Racism and Response in Politics, seven articles under Spiritual Culture and Learning, and seven articles under Miscellany. The papers have been edited and prepared for publication by Mahomed Haroon and Suleman Essop Dangor, specialists of Islamic culture in Africa.‎

‎The Ottoman Empire and Europe: The Ottoman Empire and its place in European history.‎

‎New English Paperback. Demy 8vo. (21 x 14 cm). Edition in English. 272 p. The Ottoman Empire and Europe: The Ottoman Empire and its place in European history. "The history of Europe and the history of the Ottomans are two parallel histories; for this reason, the history of the two worlds should be studied comparatively.". (Halil Inalcik). From the middle of the fifteenth century on, the Ottoman Empire played a crucial role in shaping European history. This factor has not been weaved into Western historiography to its detriment, because explaining concepts such as raison d'etat, realpolitik, balance of power or even European identity remain somewhat short changed without the role of the Ottoman Empire in the evolution as well as functioning of these concepts. The Ottoman Empire is generally depicted and perceived as the adversary and antithesis of Europe and Europeanness in Western historiography because of certain historic reasons such as the Christian crusading tradition, public hostility due to long lasting warfare, cultural estrangement and perhaps because the Ottomans remained outside the Enlightenment process. However, there is much more to it than struggle. Our research findings presented in this compilation point to the impact of the Ottoman Empire in shaping modern Europe, specifically as of the sixteenth century and socio-cultural exchanges between the two realms through five hundred years of encounter.‎
