‎Very Good French Original red cloth bdg. Repaired binding skillfully. 12mo. (17, 12,5 cm). Edition in French. [2], 134 p., 3 numerous folded planches. Memory aid for the use of Swiss artillery officers. Chapter 3: Fire hydrants. [L'Arlesienne]. Prep. by Kemal Emin [Bara], (1876-1957). Yeni Sahne Külliyati: 1. L'Arlésienne is a short story, written by Alphonse Daudet and first published in his collection Letters From My Windmill (Lettres de mon moulin) in 1869. On a commission from Léon Carvalho, the author transformed the story in 1872 into a play in three acts and five tableaux with music and chorus. Georges Bizet wrote incidental music for the play's first production on 1 October 1872, at the Vaudeville Theatre (now the Gaumont). The play was not successful and closed after only 21 performances. The music score was later used for two suites of the same name, the first established by Bizet himself in November 1872, the second after Bizet's 1875 death, by Ernest Guiraud. Another play was originally scheduled for the night of 1 October 1872, but it was withdrawn by the censors at the last minute and L'Arlésienne was substituted. Many of the patrons were less than happy with this change. Daudet's play formed the basis of the Italian opera L'arlesiana (1897), text by Leopoldo Marenco, music by Francesco Cilea. ‎ZIYA GÖKALP, (1876-1924), (Turkish sociologist, writer, poet, and political activist).‎

‎Altin isik.‎

‎Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) In modern very aesthetic full leather bdg. Demy 8vo. (22 x 14 cm). In Ottoman script. 197, [2], [1] p. Altin isik. Ziya Gökalp, whose real name is Mehmet Ziya was born on March 23,1876 in Diyarbair. Ziya Gökalp started his education in Diyarbakir, and moved to Istanbul in 1895 to attend the school for veterinary medicine. During this stage of his life, he met important political figures of the era such as Ibrahim Temo and Ishak Sukûti. He was much influenced by the Young Turks movement and joined the political reform movement Ittihat ve Terakki (Committee of Union and Progress). He was arrested in 1898 because of his dissident activities and spent a year in prison. After his release, he was sent to exile to Diyarbakir where he worked on a minor governmental assignments. After the declaration of the second constitutional monarchy, he established a branch of Ittihat ve Terakki in Diyarbakir, and became its representative. He published the Peyman newspaper. In 1909, he attended the Ittihat ve Terakki Congress held in Thessalonica as the Diyarbakir delegate. The next year, he was elected member to the central administrative council of this organization in Thessalonica. He taught sociology courses in Ittihat Terakki's school, which he had helped establish in 1910. In the mean time, he also published the Genç Kalemler periodical. In 1912, he was elected as a representative of Ergani Maden to the Meclis-i Mebusan (Parliament), and he moved to Istanbul. He was also one of the founders of the association Türk Ocagi (The Turkish Hearth). He wrote about nationalism and Turkish nationalism in the publication of this association Turk Yurdu, and in many other publications such as Halka Dogru, Islam Mecmuasi, Milli Tetebbular Mecmuasi, Iktisadiyat Mecmuasi, Içtimaiyat Mecmuasi and Yeni Mecmua. In the mean time, he taught sociology at the Darülfünun-u Osmani (Istanbul University). During the collapse of the Ottoman Empire, Ziya Gökalp sought to fashion a new national identity. In essence, his philosophy consisted of the effort of synthesizing the ethical and cultural values native to Turkish society, and certain values borrowed from the west. He summarized this approach as 'becoming Turkish, Muslim, and modern', and he took the cultural component from Turkish nationalism, and the ethical component from Islam. Gokalp defended that the constructive element of international culture were national cultures and he gave priority to folk literature over court literature. He believed in the importance of positive sciences, which had made the technological and scientific development of the West possible and considered religion as an auxiliary element on the way to reach religious and social unity. His social model was influenced by Emile Durkheim's theoretical concept of 'solidarism'. He opted for this model because unlike liberalism, which was based on the individual, and Marxism, which was based on class struggle, solidarism considered vocational organizations as the essential social unit. He wrote countless articles explaining his social and political views, and he systematized the concept of Turkish nationalism. He played an important role in the establishment and the development of Turkish national literature. In spite of the verse works and the poetry that he wrote in defense of Turkish nationalism, recent history Turkish cultural tends to acknowledge him more as a figure of political struggle. Ziya Gökalp earned great respect on the basis of his life of political activism. Leaving an indelible mark on the development of Turkish national identity, Gokalp died on October 25, 1924 as a citizen of the newly founded Republic of Turkey. Roentgen has been a very important step of the modern civilization as a revolutionary technique for scientists all around the world and it has immediately been applied in medical field. Roentgen apparatus was first installed in Turkey by an intern doctor Esad Feyzi who took the first radiographies at the Imperial Medical School (Istanbul) in 1896. He made use of X-ray method for medical diagnosis later on when Turkish-Greek war broke out in 1897. Esad Feyzi worked in the clinical team led by professor Salih Effendi, MD, at the Yildiz Temporary Military Hospital in Istanbul to take radiographies of soldiers wounded at war in cooperation with the German Red Cross medical delegation. This event is most probably the earliest examples of the application of X-ray technique into military surgery all over the world. Researches have also proven that medical radiography technique was also applied in Greece by Greek and English doctors during that war. This war gave the opportunity to German and British medical teams to use X-ray as a radiographic imaging technique at the two confronting sides that was used in consequent wars in other parts of the world, later on.‎

‎[MEHMET] EMIN [HALID] ONAT, (1908-1961).‎

‎[MODERN TURKISH ARCHITECTURE] [Autograph letter signed Emin Onat].‎

‎Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Original autograph handwritten letter by Mehmet Emin Onat. (30x21 cm). In Ottoman script. 2 p. Full. Letterhead of 'Teknik Üniversite Istanbul; Ev: Kadiköy'. It starts as 'Sevgili Lemancigim'. Emin Onat was a Turkish architect and former rector of Istanbul Technical University. Onat was born in Istanbul in 1908. He entered Istanbul Technical University in 1926. Then, he was sent to Zurich Technical University. Onat was one of the architects of Anitkabir, the mausoleum of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. His architectural style was formed at ETH. Emin Onat learned to experiment, interpret and search for modernism from his teacher Otto R. Salvisberg, a well-known, experienced practicing architect. Despite getting under the Anitkabir's shadow, he has a unique architectural style. Onat's architectural talent blossomed at Zurich Technical University, where one of his fellow students was Otto Rudolf Salvisberg, who later went to become one of the best architects of his time. Onat completed his studies in Zurich and returned to Turkey in 1934. Within a year, he had become an assistant professor in the Department of Architecture at the School of Engineering. He held the post for a couple of years that were marked by strenuous relations with the other members of the faculty, owing to the novel methods of teaching Onat introduced. In 1944 Onat became the first dean of the newly established Faculty of Architecture at the Istanbul Technical University. Onat rose further into the echelons of the architectural world in 1946, when he was given an honorary membership of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA). In 1951 he became the Rector of the Istanbul Technical University, a post he held for two years. The Hannover Technical University awarded him an honorary doctorate in 1956. In 1957 he returned to the university. His return lasted only three years as on 21 October 1960 he and 147 faculty members were ousted from the university. Onat designed several impressive buildings during his career. These include the Istanbul Theatre and Conservatory, Istanbul Palace of Justice (1949), Kavaklidere Cenap, Presidential Secretariat in Cankaya and the General Directorate of Security. Onat had a predilection for local architectural elements. He fused traditional designs into his own designs, striving to attain organic unity. Onat's other designs are the Istanbul Lounges, Uludag Sanatorium, Bursa Governor's Mansion and IBM Headquarters in Istanbul. (Source: Wikipedia). Rare.‎

The principle aim in the establishment of this school was to follow a scientific way in the education and teaching of musical arts, and introduce the old pieces by printing them. Some courses on Turkish and Western music should be given in a course of four years. This school closed in the days of Independence War and reopened by the attempts of Haydar Beg the mayor of Istanbul in 1923. (Source: Music publications from Ottoman Empire up to today, 1876-1986.; ALANER, BÜLENT). Haci Sadullah Aga was a composer and performer. He was the son of Hafiz Kerim Efendi, one of the muezzins of Fatih Mosque, and was one of the greatest composers of the reign of Sultan Selim III. In some sources, the information regarding his life have been jumbled together with other namesake composers of his era. Some of his works may have been confused with those of other namesake composers. Therefore, information regarding his life is not precise. As far as it is known, after his first education, he was accepted to Enderun Mektebi (The Palace School in which the devshirmeh [T.N. selected for the army] children were educated) and he was educated in literature and history and gained skill in javelin, Indian club and horse riding. He had served in the Russo-Turkish War in 1767. It is said that he received great attention from Selim III because he had a beautiful voice and he was a master singer (vocalist) and that he was the head of the fasil committee of the sultan for some time. Sadullah Aga, who is accepted as the most powerful composer of the school of Selim III, was also the 'musahib' (talk friend) of the sultan and later he became the head 'musahib'. He was an eloquent and cheerful person with a nice personality. He served as a music teacher at Enderun and served at the Palace during the reign of Mahmud II. Sadullah Agha followed the footsteps of Itrî and under the influence of Itrî he had integrated lyricism to his compositions, which are considered to be among the greatest pieces of the classical repertoire. He developed a style that is pertinent to classical rules but is more lyrical. His influence on all composers of his period can be seen. Around thirty works of Haci Sadullah Aga, who had composed hundreds of works, has reached the present day. Compositions and 'semaî' are dominant among these works. All of these works are secular and mostly literal works. His works contain a high level of lyricism and musicality. Especially all of his works that formed the 'Bayati-Araban' set are among the most beautiful examples of the classical music repertoire. Sadullah Aga, who is among the elite composers of Classical Turkish music, lived his last years by secluding to the residence given to him seven years before his death by the sultan and died at the age of seventy eight. He has many great songs in various tones. Darülelhan published 121 scores before 1928, this is the first one. Özege 3585. Not in OCLC. Extremely rare.‎

Report was not published before such as that. Roumi: 1327 = Gregorian: 1910. The Ottoman land represented a bridge between Asia and Europe, which was destroyed by epidemic diseases that emerged in different periods. In the 19th century, the main source of epidemic was the cholera morbus that emerged in India in the lower Bengal delta between the Ganges and Brahmaputra rivers. At the beginning of the 19th century, the disease became a global threat. Cholera epidemic appeared for the first time in the Ottoman territory in 1822, and continued to emerge into intermediate outbreaks. Due to its geographical location, the cholera epidemic was easily spread to the Ottoman territory and caused great losses in the 19th century, when it became a global threat. At the beginning of the 20th century, still cholera was a serious problem. Prokopi is a settlement in Central Asia Minor, built on a plateau at an altitude of 1,200 m above sea level. It lies near the confluence of four tributary rivers of the Alys River (Kizilirmak), which flows to the north of Ürgüp, within about 10 km from the settlement. It has been claimed that the word Ürgüp is the Turkish version of the Greek name Prokopi. The latter is supposed to refer to St. Prokopios, although there is no evidence suggesting the existence of a namesake church. Levidis supported that the ancient name of the settlement was Osiana, which the traveller Texier (Charles) adopted as well. Ürgüp was inhabited by Muslims, Turkish-speaking Greek-Orthodox and some Armenians. Several conflicting opinions have been stated about the population. Farasopoulos talks about 15,000 Muslims and 5,000 Christians. According to an inventory carried out by the state in 1919, Ürgüp was inhabited by 12,500 Muslims, 6,000 Christian-Orthodox and 15-20 Armenian families.‎

‎ILBER ORTAYLI.‎

‎Ottoman studies.‎

‎New English Paperback. Demy 8vo.. (21 x 15 cm). Edition in English. 256 p. Ottoman studies. This collection of papers by Prof. Ilber Ortayli mainly deals with the political, economic, social and cultural transformations, which Ottoman Empire has undergone in its last centuries. Within the frame of millet conception, which was unique to the Empire as an administration system, this book looks into the areas of transformation, including the modernization struggles, tendencies in historiography, structural and judicial changes in family relations, provincial and urban structures and the relations between Russia and the Ottoman Empire. Prof. Ortayli details the millet system through allocating special titles for non-Muslim minorities in the Empire like the Jews and the Greeks. Similarly, he reveals the relations between Ottomanism and Zionism in the Empire's last decades. After giving a picture of the constitution and the parliament, he glances at how the history of the Ottoman Empire and Russia are approached in the historiographies. Turning back to the debates on modernization, he explains the background, starting from the second Vienna siege in 1683. In the following chapter he examines the structural changes in the international affairs of the Ottoman state. Before delving into the changes in civil life, he assigns two chapters to the provincial structures in the Empire's port cities. Meticulously examining the archives and sources about the late Ottoman history, Prof. Ortayli gives a comprehensive and multifaceted picture of the Empire. Moreover, he utilizes a wide range of Ottoman archives. Thanks to his language skills, he provides insights from several scholars whose writings in different languages enrich this book.‎

‎Sultan Abdulhamid II: The portrait of a political genius.‎

‎New English Original bdg. HC. 4to. (27 x 20 cm). In English. 248 p., ills. Sultan Abdulhamid II: The portrait of a political genius. Sultan Abdulhamid was one of the most important and controversial figures of the 19th century. Due to both the important occurrences of this "long century" and the many years of reign enjoyed by the Sultan helped him play a decisive role in the Turkish history. Sultan was ruling a land still known as the most proper part of the globe to be exploited in an era when imperialism was harshly colonizing the "under-developed" world. And just because of that he was a man that was hardly liked. As being one of the formidable leaders of the times when the classical conflict between the East and the West was evolving toward a very bloody fight, Sultan Abdulhamid was thought to be born for defense. Even deeply immersed in an intensive conflict both inside and outside the country, the Sultan was striving for the wellbeing of his people and his domain. In this study the writer tried to shed some light upon the personal life of the Sultan and to panoramically narrate his work as a statesman. He was also concerned for the language and style to be clear and objective; and for being able to present the reader a more imaginable text he enriched the work with visuals.‎
