‎Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) In contemporary brown cloth bdg. with marbled boards. Spine re-backed masterfully. Minor fading on edges. Pages are clean. Demy 8vo. (21 x 12 cm). In Ottoman script (Old Turkish with Arabic letters). 178, [1] p. Litho. Melhame (c. Melâhim) as a term used to mean the great and bloody war that resulted in many casualties; the prophecies based on a prophecy on the future and destiny of the world, the universe, religions, states and societies, the astrologers making predictions based on astrology, and the saints based on discovery and inspiration; It means expressing big, important, terrible, horrible events or their symptoms that will take place in the future as well. In addition, melhâmes are weather forecasts based on meteorological observations. Daniel is said to be the originator of these works. Melhâmes are widespread in the Middle East, particularly in Mesopotamia. The most famous of melhâmes in Turkish is Yazici Salih's "Melhâme-i Semsiyye". This mathnawi [i.e. in prose], which is one of Cevri's well-known works, was composed of the rewriting of Semsiyye, written by Yazici Salih in 811 (1408), in 1044 (1635). This melhâme of Cevrî is smaller than the original (which is 4788 couplets) with its 3617 couplets, which include very interesting astrological and astronomical prophecies in prose. Cevrî Ibrahim Çelebi, (1596-1654), was a Mevlevî Turkish / Ottoman diwan poet and calligrapher. It has a decorative and ornamental head (serlevhâ) with traditional flowers including the calligraphic title "Melhâme-i Cevrî, aleyhi rahmet ül-Bârî", and it starts with Basmala. During the book, the text is separated into two blocks except for subheadings. Some pages have marginal texts and words originally. On the ketebe page, it's stated that the calligrapher of this book is Isfahanîzâde Mehmed Riza. A good example of lithography. ‎[FIRST REPUBLICAN TURKISH THEORY ON THE REORGANIZING OF THE STOCK-EXCHANGES] Borsalarin tevhîdi meselesi hakkinda rapor. [i.e. Report on merging exchanges].‎

‎Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Paperback. Minor fading on pages. Otherwise a fine pamphlet. Original red wrappers. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 17 cm). In Ottoman script (Old Turkish in Arabic letters). 12 p. At the introduction of this treatise, the authors state that exchanges are generally divided into two and that these are collective and dispersed types. In other sections, it emphasizes how new the Turkish stock market is compared to the world stock markets and how important it is to make the arrangements carefully in this context. The origin of an organized securities market in Turkey has its roots in the second half of the 19th century. The first securities market in the Ottoman Empire was established in 1866 under the name of "Dersaadet Securities Exchange" following the Crimean War. Dersaadet Exchange also created a medium for European investors who were seeking higher returns in the vast Ottoman markets. Following the proclamation of the Turkish Republic, a new law was enacted in 1929 to reorganize the fledgling capital markets under the new name of "Istanbul Securities and Foreign Exchange Bourse". In this rare pamphlet, argued earlier this reorganization only one year ago from the new law in 1929. Nizameddin Bey was an Ottoman / Turkish clerk of the stock exchange. Mehmed Vehbi Saridal, (1886-1969), was a Turkish / Ottoman politician. He is a graduate of Istanbul Law School and Berlin University Faculty of Philosophy. He was a professor of Turkish Economics and Trade Doctrines and Social Economics. This is the first theoretical book on the reorganizing of the Republican stock exchanges after the collapse of the Ottoman Empire. ‎Ottoman Istanbul in flames: City conflagrations, governance and society in the early modern period.‎

‎New English Paperback. Cr. 8vo. (20 x 14 cm). In English. 174 p. Ottoman Istanbul in flames: City conflagrations, governance and society in the early modern period. Fires are significant to study due to the immense change they brought to urban life which make it possible to trace the policies, approaches, and regulations of the city rulers. When it comes to fires in the 18th century Istanbul, the Ottoman Empire's responsibility to return the city to pre-fire conditions, and bring normalcy to city life played a crucial role. This study is an inquiry into the Ottomans' perception of fires and urban regulations. Analyzing official sources, such as court records and archival sources, this study aims to understand the Ottomans' role and mindset toward the city reconstruction after fires. Also, by cross-checking official with non-official sources, i.e. traveler accounts, the reports of diplomats (official, non-Ottoman records), drawings and secondary sources, this study provides a broader picture on the manner in which the Ottomans dealt with the outcome of fires in the capital.‎

‎Kayseri with its Armenian and Greek cultural heritage.= Ermeni ve Rum kültür varliklariyla Kayseri. Introduction by Zeynep Oguz.‎

‎New English Paperback. Pbo. 4to. (31 x 24 cm). In English and Turkish. 261 p., color and b/ ills. Kayseri with its Armenian and Greek cultural heritage.= Ermeni ve Rum kültür varliklariyla Kayseri. Introduction by Zeynep Oguz. The book traces the buildings that have been left behind by the Armenian and Greek communities of Kayseri through statistical information and visual sources, and, as such, presents a glimpse into the region's sociocultural past. The 'photograph' of this cultural heritage as it exists in 2015 attests to how Kayseri that we know today is a product of historical complexity, and cultural, ethnic, and religious diversity. At the end of 19th century, non-Muslims constituted one-third of the population of the Kayseri Province, and a significant number of their buildings have unexpectedly withstood to this day despite destruction that they were exposed to. However, this buildings are deteriorating at an alarming pace. The cultural heritage of the peoples who have been forcefully expelled from their homelands should not be neglected, but should instead be protected like other cultural heritage and provided with the conditions necessary for its survival. These are crucially important for the processes of facing the past. This work in your hands was prepared with the hope that it may contribute to efforts in this direction.‎

‎Turkish foundations in Rhodes and Kos.‎

‎New New English Original bdg. Dust wrapper. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 17 cm). In English. 304 p., ills. Turkish foundations in Rhodes and Kos. Turks living in the Aegean islands of Rhodes and Kos under Greek sovereignty have a multitude of problems at present. These can be summarized under various headings such as Citizenship, the Right to Education in Turkish, Free Practice of Religion, Environment of Hatred and Oppression, Foundations (Waqfs) and Protection of Cultural Heritage Inherited from the Ottoman Turks. Greece has been implementing various policies for the cultural assimilation of Island Turks. Part of cultural assimilation policies adopted by Greece was its actions towards cutting off all ties between the Turkish foundations and island Turks, and consequently destroying architectural monuments inherited from the Ottomans. It is known that establishment of the foundations on the islands started with the Ottoman conquest of Rhodes and Kos in 1522. Over the centuries, foundations led to the development of a feeling of unity and solidarity among the island Turks. Foundations have provided opportunities for island Turks in important areas from worship services to education and has also contributed to the preservation of common traditions. After the end of the Second World War, the island was assigned to the sovereignty of Greece in 1947, Greece started launching a policy for the gradual destruction of Muslim Turkish foundations. Unlike other foundations in Greece, foundations in Rhodes and Kos are subject to heavy taxes in addition to the same property taxes as commercial institutions. On the other hand, the Greek governments compelled the foundations to sell part of their properties by continuously forcing the Foundation Administration to make huge payments. By dwindling the Turkish foundations, Greece has been trying to bring the Turkish presence in Rhodes and Kos to an end. In summary, the Turks living in Rhodes and Kos today are on the brink of losing their Turkishness let alone preserving their cultural identity, including foundations. An atmosphere of fear prevails among the island Turks and they feel intimidated. We wish that the book Turkish Foundations in Rhodes and Kos will be beneficial to researchers who will conduct studies on this subject and also raise awareness in the international arena on the assimilation policies implemented by Greece.‎

‎Smintheion Studies I: The Roman baths and related structures.‎

‎New English Original bdg. HC. 4to. (29 x 22 cm). In English. 113 p., b/w ills. Smintheion Studies I: The Roman baths and related structures. This project was carried out with permission from the Turkish Ministry of Culture under the auspices of the Department of Antiquities and Museums. Especially important was the support of Coskun Ozgunel, the director of excavations at Smintheion (Sanctuary of Apollo Smintheus) since 1980, who allowed me to excavate at the site. After I became a member of the archaeological team in 2003, I began to specialize on the Roman use of the sanctuary by placing special emphasis on the Roman Baths and other water-related buildings that were important for the operation of the sanctuary. My first work was to excavate the water distribution/storage/settling basins located to the west of the temple of Apollo Smintheus in the course of the 2006 and 2007 field seasons. Then, I excavated Large Baths between 2008 and 2013 and determined that ali the water distribution basins supplied Large Baths with water from the sacred spring next to the temple. My last work was to excavate Small Baths, located about 50 meter north of the temple between 2014 and 2017. This structure was partially dug in the l 970s as part of a rescue excavation by Çanakkale Archaeology Museum as it was a Roman villa. I re-excavated the structure and established that this was the second major Roman bath built in the sanctuary. With the excavations of these two Roman baths at Smintheion, I wanted to contribute to our general knowledge on the function of the 'sanctuary baths' and the monumentalization of the Greek sanctuaries during the Roman era. I am hoping that these works will shed new light on those studies dealing with the use of the Hellenic sanctuaries during the Roman era. Coskun Özgünel, my tutor and advisor throughout my Ph.D. course at Ankara University, also provided support during the years of excavation at the sanctuary. My experience working alongside him during excavations of a Roman bath at Salamis on Cyprus was an important reason for me to work on the Roman baths of Smintheion. His lovely wife Nese Ozgünel has become a mentor for me throughout my stay at Smintheion. Special thanks are due to my colleagues Turan Takaoglu, Erhan Oztepe, Tolga Ozhan, Tayyar Gürdal, and Oguz Koçyigit for sharing their thoughts on the finds recovered from the excavations of the Roman baths at the sanctuary. In addition, my warm thanks are due to Fikret K. Yegül who kindly shared his insights on the finds with me during his visit to the sanctuary in 2016. I am also deeply grateful to him for honoring me by contributing to this work with an introduction highlighting the importance of the Roman baths at the sanctuary of Apollo Smintheus. Davut Kaplan.‎

‎Ottoman costumes. From textile to identity.‎

‎New English Paperback. Pbo. Demy 8vo. (22 x 15 cm). In English. 336 p., color and b/w ills. The study of clothes and dressing has great potential for social and cultural history. Typically Ottoman urbanites situated their fellow men after a glance at the clothing worn by the latter. As to the women, such conclusions were more difficult to draw, as all females were to be modestly covered up and ideally almost invisible. Yet in practice, at least from the eighteenth century onwards, it was often possible, at least in Istanbul, to distinguish fashionable from soberly pious women. To be aware of people's modes of dressing thus was part of knowing one's way around in Ottoman society. But clothes were not only part of the informal social order, enforced, as far as the individual was concerned, by relatives and neighbours. In addition the Ottoman state took a major interest in regulating the public appearance of its subjects; thus the adherents of the empire's varying religions were to be immediately distinguishable through their clothing. At the same time, particularly but not exclusively in the nineteenth century, the unification of costume among public officials and military men was another state concern. Official regulation of costume, enforced or merely attempted, thus should be studied as part of the public image of Ottoman society, as it existed in the heads of bureaucrats and also of the sultan himself. From a moderately wealthy Ottoman subject's point of view, clothes formed an essential part of the presentation of self. This becomes clear once photography had become popular in these circles during the later nineteenth century. As people could usually choose what clothes they wore when having their pictures taken, these images can be taken as statements concerning official position, wealth, modernity or elegance. Moreover clothes might refer to cultural relations with the outside world that the wearer was involved in, perhaps in real life but at least in his/her imagination. Conversely Polish gentlemen of the seventeenth century developed a preference for kaftans visibly inspired by Ottoman prototypes. These were meant to project a synthetic identity described as 'Sarmatian', but certainly also to advertise the fact that its wearers possessed connections to Istanbul. Given the power and wealth of the sultans' court, features of Ottoman dress also were imitated among other European aristocrats, including King Henry VIII. of England. Thus apart from everything else, the history of Ottoman clothing possesses numerous intercultural dimensions, that the contributors to this volume have attempted to explore.‎

Ottoman inscriptions from Jerusalem and other Palestinian cities. From the year 1071 until 1917 Turks ruled Jerusalem. Between the Jews, Christians and all others who claim Jerusalem as their history holy city, the Turkish rule was longest in the history of the Holyland. First Seljukids, Artuqids and Zangids, and after that Mamluks from (1250 to 1516) and lastly Ottoman Turks ruled (from 1516 to 1917) in Jerusalem and surroundings. But despite this long rule, the Turkish heritage and contribution to Jerusalem is often overlooked or underestimated in the literature. In this book there are 122 inscriptions from Jerusalem and other parts of Ottoman Palestine mostly published for the first time. All the inscriptions are accompanied by recent photos on paper and CD-Rom, so that one can check the inscriptions and the authors interpretation and reading. There are also detailed maps of the location of the inscriptions.‎

‎New English Original bdg. HC. 4to. (28 x 20 cm). In English and abstract in Turkish. 127 p., numerous color plts. Boundary letters: Ottoman officials to Luigi Ferdinando Marsili, 1699-1701. Book of Project of 'Between Ottoman pashas and L. F. Marsigli: Letters and contracts / Boundary letters: Ottoman officials to Count Luigi Ferdinando Marsigli'. Marsili:I threw myself into a mosque in the city of Buda that is burning up. It was previously a metropolitan bishop dedicated to S. Stefano, the king of Hungary. I picked up books on two small shelves there. Marsili entered a cultural atmosphere that began with Hezarfen Efendi during his time in Istanbul. Because of his many political, diplomatic, cultural, military aspects allowed him to increase communication with different ethnical and intellectual environments such as Armenian, jewish, slav and greek people. To Marsili, the danube river was a natural border that divided the Orient world and the western world. The Turks would soon sea that he was right. The Turks could not move along the danube much and did not capture Vienna which was on the other size of the danube. Marsili always made stratetic plans based on his observations of the danube river. Marsili was known by the English politicans and scientists, as an important researcher, cartographer and scientist in his own right. Therefore, the English scientists and readers were informed about him and his work. Moreover, the two dictionaries published in the 18th century in English included in his biography. ‎Camera Ottomana: Photography and modernity in the Ottoman Empire, 1840-1914.‎

‎New English Paperback. Pbo. Large roy. 8vo. (25 x 18 cm). English Edition. 256 p., color and b/w ills. Camera Ottomana: Photography and modernity in the Ottoman Empire, 1840-1914. From its birth in 1839, photography has participated in modernity as much as it has symbolized it. Its capacity to record and display and its claim to accuracy and truth intricately linked the new technology to the dynamism of the modern world. The Ottoman Empire embraced photography with great enthusiasm. In fact, the impact and meaning of photography were compounded with the thrust of modernization and westernization of the Tanzimat movement. By the turn of the century, photography in the Ottoman lands had become a standard feature of everyday life, of public media, and of the state apparatus. This volume explores some of the most striking aspects of the close connection between photography and modernity with a particular focus on the Ottoman Empire. Much of the material concerns the display of modernity through photography, as was so often the case in the photographs and albums commissioned by the Sultan to showcase his empire for Western audiences. Nevertheless, modernity was often embedded in the photographic act, transforming it into a common and mundane practice. Be it in the form of images disseminated through the illustrated press, postcards sent out to family members or anonymous collectors, portraits presented to friends and acquaintances, or pictures taken of employees and convicts, photography had started to invade practically every sphere of public and private life. The visual world we live in today was born some 150 years ago. Camera Ottomana is both a homage to, and a critical assessment of, the local dimension of one of the most potent and transformative technological inventions of the recent past.‎

‎SÜHA ÖZKAN, RICHARD PLUNZ.‎

‎Turgutreis, 1974. [EDITION IN ENGLISH].‎

‎New New English Original bdg. Dust wrapper. Oblong small 4to. (22 x 26 cm). In English. 340 p., b/w and color ills. Turgutreis, 1974. Turgutreis 1974 is a pioneering study of late 20th century urbanization engaging the evolution of a new municipality on the Bodrum peninsula along the Turkish Southeast Aegean coast. Since 1974, in less than four decades, three small villages with 2,464 inhabitants grew to a new city comprising more than 250,000 summer residents. This study documents in detail the timeless material culture of the original inhabitants, heavily grounded in subsistence agriculture and without modern infrastructure, and with a predominance of livelihoods related to grain and citrus production and traditional building crafts. By the turn of the millennium there had been a complete transition to a service economy for tourism with little left of the original built environment that was displaced by second homes and condominiums. The massive transformation of the original lifeworld typifies the urbanization of much of the Mediterranean coast during this same period, including the entire Bodrum peninsula. The story unfolds through an exacting documentation of the lives and livelihoods of fifteen of the original families including textual material and 140 original drawings and 250 photographs. Also included is an account of the historical development of the peninsula culled from a formal record of more than two thousand years. The research pushes the normative boundaries of built environment studies to include a lexicon of the traditional local building elements and methods, and their transition to modern practice. The field research entailed study over the entire period by the authors with teams from Columbia University and Middle East Technical University. Co-authors of the study are Suha Ozkan, Emeritus Professor of Architecture at METU; and Richard Plunz, Professor of Architecture at Columbia. Ozkan has been Deputy and Secretary General of the Aga Khan Award for Architecture between the years 1982 and 2006; and is presently founder of the Bodrum Architecture Library. Plunz has been Professor of Architecture at Columbia since 1974, where he has directed the Division of Architecture and the Urban Design Program. ‎DUKAGJIN-ZADEH BASRI-BEY [DUKAKINZÂDE BASRI].‎

‎L'Albanie independante et l'empire khalifal Ottoman. Preface de Claude Farrere, (1876-1957).‎

‎Very Good French Paperback. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 16 cm). In French. [8], [1 frontispiece with a portrait], [xvi], 81, [2] p. Chipped on extremities of wrappers. Spine repaired by restoration tape. Overall a good copy. The Dukagjini were an Albanian feudal noble family. They may have been relatives or descendants of the earlier Progoni, who founded the first Albanian state in recorded history, the Principality of Arbanon. Their domain extended from northern Albania to western Kosovo. The city of Lezhe was its most important holding. The Dukagjini evolved from an extended clan (farefisni) to a feudal family in the late 13th century, when their first known progenitor Gjin Tanushi who became known as a dux (duke) and thus his descendants took the surname Dukagjini. By the early 15th century, they had evolved in one of the most important feudal families in the country. After the Ottoman conquest of Albania, a branch of them found refuge and settled in Venetian Koper, where they became known as the Docaini family which held the governorship of the town until the early 17th century, when the last male line Docaini died. Another branch, converted to Islam from Catholic Christianity and remained in the Ottoman Empire, where they reached the high ranks of Ottoman leadership and produced many governors (pashas) in the Middle East, where descendants of them live in the modern period. Basri Bey, together with names such as Enver Bey and Kazim Karabekir, he was among the founders of the Manastir organization of the Union and Progress Society, which played an important role in the declaration of the Constitutional Monarchy. Basri Bey went to the opposition ranks with the claim that the Unionists, whom he thought was under the influence of a small clique, were moving away from the reforms and ideals, and expressed heavy criticism against them. ‎Mein Sultan möge lange leben!.= Padisahim çok yasasin!: Sultan Abdül Hamid II. und Kaiser Wilhelm II. Eine deutsch-osmanische Freundschaft. Die politischen Gedanken und Erinnerungen Sultan Abdül Hamids II.‎

‎Fine German Paperback. Demy 8vo. (22 x 15 cm). In German. 516 p., ills. "Die politischen Gedanken und Erinnerungen Sultan Abdül Hamids 2. aus dem Französischen übersetzt und kommentiert von Thomas Weiberg. Sultan Abdül Hamid II. und Kaiser Wilhelm II. - eine deutsch-osmanische Freundschaft "Aber wer im Okzident kennt unsere Geschichte? Wer unterzieht sich der Mühe, sie kennenzulernen?". So fragte Sultan Abdül Hamid II.

‎NADEZHDA VASILEVA VASILEVA.‎

‎The rivalry between Russia and Great Britain in Eastern Rumelia, 1878-1885.‎

‎New English Paperback. Demy 8vo. (21 x 14 cm). In English. 456 p. The rivalry between Russia and Britain over the autonomous Province of Eastern Rumelia is a historical fact. This study examines tis fact via two historical events concerning the development of the Province - the process of establishment and administrative organization of Eastern Rumelia (1878-1879) and the event of unification between the Province and the Principality of Bulgaria. It argues that the British authorities created the Province of Eastern Rumelia and later they defended the act of unification with the purpose to thwart the Russian political advancement in the Balkans. The British political aim was successfully accomplished as Russia achieved to preserve its political domination in the Province only until 1885 when it opposed the act of unification. This research is based on archival documentary sources and secondary sources. The archive collections used for preparation of this work are the collections of the Foreign Office of the National Archive. The existing historiography on the issue of Eastern Rumelia is very limited as regards the variety of examined topics, though a considerable number of researches are dedicated to the act of unification and the political, cultural and economic development of the Province from 1878 to 1885.‎

‎HAKAN ERTUGRAL.‎

‎History of chemistry in ancient Turks.‎

‎New English Paperback. Demy 8vo. (21 x 14 cm). In English. 176 p. Generally, outside of the academic word, nomads are not considered as the part of the civilization process. Most of the times, due to the Eurocentric thoughts that were developed in the 19th century, scientific and technological improvements of the humanity were considered unique to Europe. Therefore, other people that were conquered by European armies were thought that they were completely out of the civilization process and the lived as 'barbarians' because they did not live or think like Europeans. According to this view, if they will civilize or they can be considered as 'developed nation', they had to live like Europeans, at least, they had to have same cultural attitudes or they must mimic. This bias made hard to understand how other cultures lived and what they developed in their material culture. However, during the 20th century, this linear and positivist understanding of history have been changed. In this book, first of all intellectual process on scientific progress was evaluated and then, the place where the Turks could be placed in this progress was examined.‎

‎Deed of trust for free water supply endowed by Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent.= Kanunî Sultan Süleyman Han'in su vakfiyesi.‎

‎Fine English Paperback. Cr. 8vo. (20 x 14 cm). In English, Turkish and reprint of original vakfiyye in Ottoman Turkish with Arabic letters. [vi], [3], 58, 57, [3] p. A bilingual preface in Turkish and English by Ates; pp. 1-19 transcription; pp. 20-34 text in modern Turkish; pp. 35-58 translation into English; pp. [57] facsimile of original vakfiyye. This book is compiled and published to interest readers in the deed of trust concerning water supply to the city of Istanbul [Constantinople - Kostantiniyye] -known as Kagithane waters- made by Sultan Suleyman theMagnificent -the greatest philanthropist ever and a man peerless in magnanimity. There have been innumerable such water supply projects large and ssmall for which deeds of trust were penned -as part pf a collection or in an overall charity. But Sultan Suleiman was the first and the only person to found a work of charity for the sole purpose of supplying his capital with"... clean, pure, healthy and sweet fresh waters". Amongst host of other deeds of trust that allocate revenues for the maintenance, repair and restoration of water works, public fountains, Turkish baths etc. that of Sultan Suleiman's philanthropy, allocation ad infinitum of revenues of a sizeable township and five villages with most extensive lands, is unique. This man of greatest magnanimity laid down conditions to keep the water supply system in good working order. Parts of revenues and incomes from his other pious foundations were to be used should revenues from this township and five villages prove insufficient. A careful study of this book will display the most exalted consciousness of this truly great sovereign in matters related to man's destiny.‎

‎Philanthropy in Anatolia through the ages: The First International Suna and Inan Kirac Symposium on Mediterranean Civilization - March 26-29, 2019, Antalya.‎

‎New English Original bdg. HC. 4to. (30 x 21 cm). Articles in English. [iv], 262 p., color and b/w ills. The articles of this volume offer a rich diversity of perspectives on philanthropy as practiced in Anatolia over some 2500 years. From such an extensive set of investigations, one would expect to compose a coherent synthetic statement on the nature of Anatolian philanthropy as well as some proposals for how to develop further a meaningful program of research on the topic. It turns out that the latter is far easier than the former; although this volume contains twenty original studies, they do not ultimately clarify either the definition of philanthropy or any essential aspect of Anatolia. The reflections below address first what might be called "the problem with philanthropy" and "the ambiguity of Anatolia." Once these waters are sufficiently muddied, it nonetheless emerges that a program of research on the topic is possible and even promising. ‎[6910 YEARS OF WORLD HISTORY THROUGH THE EYES OF AN OTTOMAN REFORMIST CLERIC] Muhtira-i ricâl ve siyâsîyyûn. [i.e. Memorandum of statesmen and poltics].‎

‎Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Original wrappers. Spine completely worn. Uncut and untrimmed pages. Overall a good copy. Cr. 8vo. (20 x 12 cm). In Ottoman script (Turkish with Arabic letters). 546 p. First and Only Edition of this book through the eyes of an Ottoman reformist Islamist cleric, on 6910 years of human history which Kazim says he personally accepts the five thousand years before Christ and uses Diruz, Levi and Buwayh as the main sources. In this work, 6910 years of historical events have been divided into four chapters. The first chapter starts with the creation of the realm and includes 4200 years of events. The second chapter includes events of eight hundred years, and the centuries and years of these numbers/dates will be followed, based on the history of when and when the events described in this section occurred. The third chapter is the milestones between the times of Jesus and Muhammad. It includes six hundred and twenty-two years between Muhammad's migration. The fourth chapter includes the events starting from the year when the Ottoman state emerged with the migration. This chapter covers six hundred and seventy-seven years. Musa Kazim supported the idea of social and political reforms provided these reforms were not against the basic Islamic principles. For instance, he advocated liberties and freedom that were within the context of Islamic laws. He defended the schooling of women but did not think they needed to obtain higher education. One of Musa Kazim's most argued thoughts is his support for the constitutional monarchy since he took constitutionalism as an inference of Islamic political understanding. He obviously judged absolutism as a non-Islamic establishment and praised constitutionalism, which also meant an appraisal for the 1908 revolution and the CUP rule. Similar to the other Islamists of the Constitutional Era, Musa Kazim had some apologetic ideas about the so-called conflict between religion and science, or the religion-civilization relationship. He refused the idea that Islam as a religion was an obstacle against the progress of humanity as Christianity was. He also defended Muslim society, saying that Islam helped Muslims create one of the highest civilizations of human history. ‎LEO TAXIL, [Marie Joseph Gabriel Antoine Jogand-Pagès], (1854-1907).‎

‎[EARLY OTTOMAN EDITION OF TAXIL'S JESUIT BOOK] Jezvit (Cizvit) tarihi. [i.e. History of the Jesuits]. Translated by Ahmed Rasim.‎

‎Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Original wrappers. 12mo. (16 x 12 cm). In Ottoman script. 44 p. Hejra-Hijri: 1304 = Gregorian: 1887. Extremely rare first edition of this Ottoman edition of 'history of the Jesuits'. This book has been abridged and translated from Taxil's work. Marie Joseph Gabriel Antoine Jogand-Pagès, better known by the pen name Léo Taxil was a French writer and journalist who became known for his strong anti-Catholic and anti-clerical views. He is also known for the Taxil hoax, a spurious expose of Freemasonry and the Roman Catholic Church's opposition to it. Marie Joseph Gabriel Antoine Jogand-Pagès was born in Marseille, and at the age of five, he was placed into a Jesuit seminary. After spending his childhood years in the seminary, he became disillusioned with the Catholic faith and began to see the religious ideology as socially harmful. Taxil first became known for writing anti-Clerical or anti-Catholic books, notably "La Bible amusante" (The Amusing Bible) and "La Vie de Jesus" (The Life of Jesus), in which Taxil satirically pointed out inconsistencies, errors, and false beliefs presented in these religious works. In his other books Les Debauches d'un confesseur (with Karl Milo), Les Pornographes sacrés: la confession et les confesseurs, and Les Maîtresses du Pape, Taxil portrays leaders of the Catholic Church as hedonistic creatures exploring their fetishes in the manner of the Marquis de Sade. In 1879, he was tried at the Seine Assizes for writing a pamphlet A Bas la Calotte ("Down with the Cloth"), which was accused of insulting a religion recognized by the state, but he was acquitted. In 1885, he professed conversion to Catholicism, was solemnly received into the church, and renounced his earlier works. In the 1890s, he wrote a series of pamphlets and books denouncing Freemasonry, charging their lodges with worshiping the devil and alleging that Diana Vaughan had written for him her confessions of the Satanic "Palladian" cult. The book had great sales among Catholics, although Diana Vaughan never appeared in public. In 1892, Taxil also began to publish a paper, La France chrétienne anti-maçonnique (Christian Antimasonic France), with his staunch anti-Masonic publishing friend, Abel Clarin de la Rive. In 1887, he had an audience with Pope Leo XIII, who rebuked the bishop of Charleston for denouncing the anti-Masonic confessions as a fraud and, in 1896, sent his blessing to an anti-Masonic Congress of Trent. Doubts about Vaughan's veracity and even her existence began to grow, and finally, Taxil promised to produce her at a lecture to be delivered by him on 19 April 1897. To the amazement of the audience (which included a number of priests), he announced that Diana was one of a series of hoaxes. He had begun, he said, by persuading the commandant of Marseille that the harbor was infested with sharks, and a ship was sent to destroy them. Next, he invented an underwater city in Lake Geneva, drawing tourists and archaeologists to the spot. He thanked the bishops and Catholic newspapers for facilitating his crowning hoax, namely his conversion, which had exposed the anti-Masonic fanaticism of many Catholics. Diana Vaughan was revealed to be a simple typist in his employ, who laughingly allowed her name to be used by him. The audience received these revelations with indignation and contempt. Afterward, Taxil left the hall, where policemen escorted him to a neighboring café. He then moved away from Paris. He died in Sceaux in 1907. An extremely rare first translation in Ottoman Turkish. First and Only Edition of Süleyman Tevfik's travels to Thessaly, who participated in the Turco-Greco War in 1897 as a war correspondent to watch the war in the Thessaly Front between April 27 - May 20, 1897. The Greco-Turkish War of 1897 or the Ottoman-Greek War of 1897, also called the Thirty Days' War and known in Greece as the Black '97. It was a war fought between the Kingdom of Greece and the Ottoman Empire. Its immediate cause was the question over the status of the Ottoman province of Crete, whose Greek majority had long desired union with Greece. Despite the Ottoman victory on the field, an autonomous Cretan State under Ottoman suzerainty was established the following year (as a result of the intervention of the Great Powers after the war), with Prince George of Greece and Denmark as its first High Commissioner. This was the first war effort in which the military and political personnel of Greece were put to test in an official open war since the Greek War of Independence in 1821. For the Ottoman Empire, this was also the first war effort in which the reorganized military personnel were put to test. The Ottoman army was under the guidance of a German military mission led by Colmar Freiherr von der Goltz, who had reorganized it after the defeat in the Russo-Turkish War (1877-1878). In Thessalian Front, war was declared on 18 April when the Ottoman ambassador in Athens, Asim Bey, met with the Greek foreign minister announcing the cutting of diplomatic ties. Heavy fighting occurred between the 21-22 April outside the town of Tyrnavos but when the overwhelming Ottoman forces converged and pushed together, the Greek general staff ordered a general withdrawal, spreading panic among soldiers and civilians alike. Larissa fell on 27 April, while the Greek front was being reorganized behind the strategic lines of Velestino, in Farsala. Nevertheless, a division was ordered to head for Velestino, thus cutting Greek forces in two, 60 km apart. Between 27 and 30 April, under the command of Col. Konstantinos Smolenskis, Greek forces checked and halted the Ottoman advance. On 5 May three Ottoman divisions attacked Farsala, forcing an orderly withdrawal of Greek forces to Domokos, while on the eve of those events Smolenskis withdrew from newly recaptured Velestino to Almyros. Volos fell into Ottoman hands-on 8 May. At Domokos, the Greeks assembled 40,000 men in a strong defensive position, joined by about 2,000 Italian "Redshirt" volunteers under the command of Ricciotti Garibaldi, son of Giuseppe Garibaldi. The Ottoman Empire had a total of about 70,000 troops, of whom about 45,000 were directly engaged in the battle. On 16 May the attackers sent part of their army around the flank of the Greeks to cut off their line of retreat, but it failed to arrive in time. The next day the rest of their army made a frontal assault. Both sides fought ferociously. The Ottomans were held at bay by the fire of the defending infantry until their left flank defeated the Greek right. The Ottoman formation broke through, forcing a renewed withdrawal. Smolenskis was ordered to stand his ground at the Thermopylae passage but on 20 May a ceasefire went into effect. Suleyman Tevfik was there in the frontline himself during this war. He shared his anecdotes about how to receive news from the battlefield and how to deliver them to Istanbul. Also, he wrote about professional conversations with journalists from other countries.
