Mustafa Resid Pasha [Musfafa Rechid Pacha] (1800-1858), Ottoman statesman and diplomat, chief architect behind the Tanzimat refo
Autograph Letter Signed 'Réchid.' in French to the author 'Monsieur Ivichievich of Wallachia' of an 'ouvrage intitulé Panigraphie sic for 'Pangraphie'' which he will recommend to 'nos amateurs des langues en orient'.
30 July 1844; Constantinople. 1p 4to. On aged paper with traces of glue from mount on reverse and six short diagonal scalpel-cuts four of them across the text not the signature. He will recommend the work 'à nos amateurs des langues en orient'. In thanking him for 'cet offre' he expresses happiness at having made the recipient's acquaintance 'quoique par écrit'. 'Panigraphie' is clearly a mistake for 'Pangraphie' but no record to the publication of a work with that title has been discovered. In Mannheim in 1807 Heinrich Bürmann printed a 'Programme de la pangraphie partie fondamentale de la caractéristique syntactique système de notation universelle' and in 1850 Chambers' Edinburgh Journal reported that 'a Monsieur Ivichievich of Wallachia submits a plan of what he calls 'Pangraphie' or universal writing'. The earliest use of the word 'pangraphic' 'writing on all subjects or in all forms' recorded in the OED is in 1821. 30 July 1844; Constantinople. unknown

['A Tommy'; Mesopotamia Campaign, British Army, First World War; Iraq; Indian Army; Ottoman Turks]:
The Campaign in Mesopotamia British Army First World War. Duplicated Typescript apparently contemporary of satirical poem by British soldier by ‘A Tommy’ titled ‘Alphabet of Mesopotamia’.
Without date or place but apparently written in Mesopotamia in late 1916. This poem is said to be an earlier work by ‘A Tommy’ the pseudonymous author of the collection ‘If I Goes West’ published in London by Harrap in 1918. WorldCat has no entries to support a second claim: that the present poem was published in 1917 with the subtitle ‘Verses written by a “Tommy†who has fought suffered and triumphed in Mesopotamia and is still on active service there’. While there is no indication that the poem has ever been published in its entirety extracts from it appeared in ‘The Bystander’ 27 November 1916; and ‘The Near East’ 6 July 1917; the latter headed ‘An Alphabet from Mesopotamia’ being preceded by the following: ‘A member of our Fighting Forces in Mesopotamia has composed some verses which he entitles “ The Alphabet of Mesopotamia.†Through the kindness of a correspondent we are allowed to reproduce here some specimens’. There may also be a reference in Catherine W. Reilly’s 1978 bibliography ‘English Poetry of the First World War’. Duplicated typescript titled ‘ALPHABET OF MESOPOTAMIA.’ 2pp foolscap 8vo. Text complete on two leaves of air mail paper glued together. Apparently contemporary and with the look of an item that has been handed around the mess room. Twenty-six four-line stanzas: one for each letter of the alphabet apart from a joint stanza for S and T and ending with an ‘ENVOI’. The first stanza reads: ‘ “A†Was an apple that grew so they say In the Garden of Eden down Qurnah way Till Eve came along and ate it one day And got thrown out of Mesopotamia.’ The poem includes the following stanzas: ‘ “F†Stands for Fritz who flies in the sky To bring down the brute we’ve many a try But the shells that we shoot seem to all pass him by And fall --- on Mesopotamia.’ ‘ “J†Is the jam with the label that lies And states that in Paris it won the first prize But out here we use it for catching the flies That swarm in Mesopotamia.’ ‘ “U†Is the Lake we call Umm-el-Brahm And guards our flanks from all possible karm sic And waters Gorringe’s Barley Farm In the middle of Mesopotamia.’ ‘ “V†Is the Victory we won at Dujailah I heard of it first from a friend who’s a sailor Who read it in Reuter’s on board a mahela On the Tigris in Mesopotamia.’ ‘ “W†Stands for the wonder and pain With which we regard the infirm and insane Old Indian Generals who guide the campaign Which we’re waging in Mesopotamia.’ ‘ “Y†Is the yearning we feel every day For a passage to Basra and thence to Bombay If we get there we’ll see that we stay right away From this wilderness - Mesopotamia.’ Without date or place, but apparently written in Mesopotamia in late 1916. unknown

MUSTAFA HALIM [OZYAZICI], (Ottoman / Turkish calligrapher), (1898-1964).
Autograph paper signed 'Hattat el-Hac Mustafa Halim'.
Istanbul: pre-1928. Soft cover. Fine. Original manuscript paper with its decorative frame. Paper size: 75x13 cm; frame size: 19x24 cm. In Ottoman script. 1 p. Signature of Halim by his very calligraphic style with 'Hattat el-Hac' title and seen one sentence down of paper: 'Gönderilen meblagi mütesekkir aldim hürmetlerim efendim' i.e. 'I received the amount sent thanks and gratitude'. Mustafa Halim Özyazici was an Ottoman calligrapher and one of the last of the classical Ottoman calligraphers using the Arabic script. He was a versatile calligrapher with a high level of expertise in many styles of script but was widely regarded as a master jeli-thuluth. He is most noted for his work on various restoration projects of both manuscripts and public buildings. He was born Mustafa Abdülhalim on 14 January 1898 in the Hazeki district of Istanbul. He was the son of Nalinci Haci Cemâl Efendi originally from Crimea and his mother was Sudanese. He was educated at Gülsen Junior High School where he was given lessons in calligraphy by Hamid Aytaç who recognised his talent and encouraged him to pursue calligraphy as a career. He later studied drawing and sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts in Istanbul. His formal calligraphy studies were with Hasan Riza Effendi 1849-1920 and Kamil Akdik 1862-1941 where he mastered the thuluth nasih and riqâ scripts. In 1916 he was drafted into the Army. After completing basic training he worked in the Military Printing Department and also worked in Evkâf-i Islâmiyye Printing Press. Following his discharge from the Army in 1924 he opened an office in Bâbiâli Street The Sublime Porte where he prepared all types of calligraphy; business cards seals and book covers. He also taught in various schools around the Cagaloglu district of Istanbul. From 1927 he was employed in the Imperial Chancery. When the Latin alphabet replaced Arabic lettering in 1928 he applied to go to Egypt where classical calligraphy using Arabic script was still valued but his application was rejected in 1929. He subsequently abandoned calligraphy altogether. However during the 1940s his skills in classical calligraphy found an outlet when he became part of a major restoration project which worked on repairs to numerous manuscripts in a variety of styles and the restoration of calligraphic reliefs and monumental art in historic public buildings including many mosques. In 1948 he was appointed to the position of 'old writing teacher' at the Academy of Fine Arts in Istanbul; a position he retained until his retirement in 1963. One of his responsibilities was to write the diplomas for those who were about to graduate from the Academy. He died on 30 September 1964 ten days after being involved in a traffic accident. He was buried in the Kozlu Cemetery. Although he developed expertise in many different types of script he was regarded as a master of jeli-thuluth script. He wrote a number of exercise books for students to practice scripts in nesih thuluth-nesih riq'a diwânî and jeli diwânî and which were part of a program designed to promote the art of calligraphy. These books are still being printed and distributed to students of calligraphy. <br/> <br/> pre-1928 paperback

BIBLE OTTOMAN TURKISH (OSMANLI).
Kitâb ül-‘Ahd el-Atik The Book of the Old Testament & Kitâb ül-‘Ahd el-Cedîd el-ensûb ilâ Rabbinâ ‘sâ el-Mesîh The Book of the New Testament of Our Lord Jesus Christ.
Paris: British & Foreign Bible Society at the Imprimérie Royale 1827. First Edition of the complete Bible in Ottoman Turkish the chief language of European and Asiatic Turkey and the official language of the Turkish Empire. The translation was undertaken in the 17th century by Wojciech Bobowski a Polish convert to Islam known as Ali Bey chief translator to Sultan Muhammad IV at the instigation of Levin Warner then Dutch Ambassador at Constantinople. It is apparently based upon a French protestant version. The New Testament from his manuscript held by Leyden University was edited by Heinrich Friedrich Diez former Russian Ambassador at Constantinople and further revised and edited by French Oriental scholar Jean Daniel Kieffer 1767-1832 before being printed in Paris in 1819. In 1820 Kieffer became the first Agent of the British and Foreign Bible Society in France and in the same year began a thorough revision of Ali Bey's translation of the Old and New Testaments. The complete Bible without the Apocrypha was published in 1827 in an edition of 5000 copies together with a further 2000 copies of the New Testament on its own. Darlow & Moule 9456. 2 Parts in 1. 4to. pp. 2 p.l. 7 1blank 984; 2 p.l. 3 1blank 318. printed in Arabic type with full vocalization. later cloth binding worn but sound internally very good. elala5475 Paris: British & Foreign Bible Society, at the Imprimérie Royale, 1827 hardcover
