Ahmed Kamil Akdik is one of the last great Ottoman calligraphers. Born in the Fındıklı neighborhood of Istanbul in 1861 Ahmed Kâmil displayed an interest in the art of calligraphy from his earliest years in primary school. In 1879 he began to study thuluth sülüs and naskhi nesih scripts with the most renowned calligrapher of the era Sami Efendi 1838-1912 and after earning his certificate in 1884 with the approval of Åževki Efendi he became one of the foremost Ottoman calligraphers. His certificate icazet is preserved in the Library of the Topkapı Palace Museum. After beginning to work for the Divan-ı Hümayun the Ottoman Imperial Council in 1894 he learned from his teacher Sami Efendi the divani and celi divani scripts as well as the inscription of the tuÄŸra or imperial monogram and replaced his teacher after the latter's retirement. He taught the thuluth and naskhi script at the Medresetü'l-Hattatin school of calligraphy that was established in 1915 and in 1918 gave lessons in rik'a script at the Galatasaray Secondary School. In 1915 he was honored by Sultan ReÅŸad r. 1909-1918 with the title of Reisü'l-Hattatin Chief Calligrapher for his standing and success in his profession.Ahmed Kâmil began to teach calligraphy in 1936 at the State Academy of the Fine Arts and continued doing so until his death; he experienced all the changes that took place during the transition from Arabic script to the Latin alphabet conforming to the changes brought about by this language revolution in all the schools in which he taught and becoming one of the leaders of this last generation of calligraphers. ‎[World War I – Ottoman Empire – Turkish War of Independence] "HC." H. C.‎

‎Letters Home from an American Professor Working in the Ottoman Empire in the Aftermath of World War I.‎

‎Constantinople New York City and others 1922. Four letters totaling seven pages. Folded else fine. A small collection of letters from “H.C.†who seems to have been an American university professor in Constantinople to his “Darling Clementine†back home. H.C. may have taught at Robert College a Christian college founded in 1863 now a prestigious private highschool.<br /> <br /> It is not clear when H.C. first arrived in Constantinople but he had been there for several years already by the time the letters begin and was certainly there at a critical point in its history. He writes in 1918 shortly after the arrival of occupying forces:<br /> <br /> “conditions are still very bad in town I long to see the suffering diminished. Some say it will be months yet. Sometimes now there is no coal no electric light no bread no water. Can you imagine the state of an Oriental city under such conditions We have had are still having trouble about light water-supply but we have steam heat plenty of food of a plain kind. We all keep well. . I hear that an American Red Cross boat will arrive next week I am eager to see its passengers. We may have a chance to leave on it but I can not see my way clear to skip because our faculty is depleted ever since the exodus at the time of the panic long ago when Miss Lyon left. . We have a good college now – boarders about 90 in the College-department – and many day scholars but lately the Spanish fever the lack of tram-car service has kept many students away. As soon as our cousins supply coal we hope for improvement. The Ententists are spreading over the city thoroughly quietly – like oil. It is a delight to see so many manly looking officers after the ones we have had here for years. There is a spiritual look in the eyes of the present occupants a look of bull-dog determination.†December 6 1918<br /> <br /> H.C. enjoys a “real yachting cruise†on his way back to Constantinople from the States in 1921 tells Clementine about his plans for his commencement speech in 1922 and describes a college reception in New York City which “General Custer’s wife†Elizabeth Bacon Custer attended undated letter. Meanwhile Turkey was engaged in its brutal war for independence. At some point H.C. befriended Electra—probably a Greek woman—whom he sent along to visit Clementine in part to help Electra cope with her traumatic experiences during the war:<br /> <br /> “As you will recall my young friend’s father was executed – tho innocent – with about 70 others. At first E. bore this with wonderful fortitude but after Xmas a reaction set in naturally enough. She developed morbidness a hyper sensitive attitude toward all of my looks words – probably a condition due to shock. I am confident that travel new scenes interests will bring her back to her old self your wholesome household will chase all gloom away. A doctor told her lately that she has hysteria that she must think of cheerful things only. I tell you this thinking that you might keep her from talking about the nation that does cruel things. The truth is that cruelty is pretty generally distributed a judicial mind finds it difficult to pick choose. Some nations get the public ear so the pot can call the kettle black!†June 6 1922<br /> <br /> Indeed both sides of the Greco-Turkish war—part of the larger Turkish campaign for independence—massacred each other. However only the Turkish contingent’s actions have been argued by historians to constitute ethnic cleansing or genocide.<br /> <br /> Of interest to historians of the Ottoman Empire and Turkey post-World War I especially Americans’ experience thereof. unknown‎

Gilt title vignette on spine damaged. 20 p. <p><br /> A bibliographically unrecorded early sixteenth-century French book about royal ordinances regarding the commonwealth along with the French translation of Sultan Selim I’s letter of conquest fethname addressed to the Grand Master of Rhodes. <br /> <p><p><br /> The first and major part of the book presents nine concepts of orders of Francis I 1494–1547 King of France from 1515 until his death regarding the commonwealth chose publique. The drafts concern such topics as the commerce of spices and drugs wool cloth and other goods chapter 1–4 the weights and equivalents of coins and the recognized foreign currencies chapter 5 the recognized units of measures chapter 6 the regulation of the extravagance of clothing chapter 7 the inn trade chapter 8 and the money that goes to Rome for obtaining Bulls chapter 9. <br /> <p><p><br /> The second section comprises the responses to the aforementioned concepts of the representatives of the Good Cities Bonnes Villes Provence and Dauphiné who had been previously assembled in Paris by the order of the King in March 1516. In most cases they requested a delay of reply to discuss the matters with those who they were representing.<br /> <p><p><br /> The third section presents the grievances and requests delivered to the King by the delegates regarding the provincial councils conciles provinciaux the prolixity of the trials the tariffs the public officers the superior courts cours souveraines the land taxes tailles and the abuse and plunder by the soldiers crossing the kingdom. <br /> <p><p><br /> These sections were recorded and written down by the court clerk Jean Hesselin Seigneur of Girodon. Hesselin mentions himself twice p. 14 and 17 once by name p. 14 within the text.<br /> <p><p><br /> The final part is the French translation of the Ottoman Sultan Selim I’s fethname letter of conquest sent on 27 August 1516 from Aleppo to Fabrizio del Carretto 1455–1521 Grand Master Magnus Magister of the Knights Hospitaller in Rhodes between 1513 and 1521. The fethname accordingly to its genre details Selim’s expedition and the conquest and emphasizes the power and grandeur of the Sultan and his army. <br /> <p><p><br /> Selim I 1470–1520 ascended the throne as the Sultan of the Ottoman Empire in 1512. He is remembered for the enormous expansion of the Empire during his reign thus raise the Ottomans to the leaders of the Muslim world. Selim’s most notable deed was the conquer of the Mamluk Sultanate which included Levant Hejaz and Egypt in 1516 and 1517 at the Battles of Marj Dabiq and Ridaniya.<br /> <p><p><br /> The Battle of Marj Dabiq near Aleppo took place on August 24 1516 where Selim defeated the Mamluk Sultan Al-Ashraf Qansuh al-Ghuri. This was a decisive victory of the war between the Ottoman Empire and the Mamluk Sultanate which ended in the conquest of much of the Middle East. Such an expansion of the Ottoman territory was a clear threat to Rhodes which was the nearest Christian possession to the coast of Asia halfway between Constantinople and Egypt. At the time the Grand Master in Rhodes was the Italian admiral Fabrizio del Carretto 1455–1521; Grand Master from 1513 to 1521 for a short interlude of a course of fifty-five years of Frenchmen serving as the supreme heads of the Order. Selim announced his victory and forecasted his threat to del Carretto in a fethname presented here in French translation however eventually he did not have the time to conduct the campaign against Rhodes. It was his successor Suleiman I who conquered the island in 1522 thus gained control over the eastern Mediterranean for the next centuries. By the time of the siege the commander of the Order was again a Frenchman Grand Master Philippe Villiers de L’Isle-Adam 1464–1534. Suleiman allowed him and the surviving knights to leave unmolested and eventually the Hospitallers were quartered permanently on Malta in 1530.<br /> <p><p><br /> To the best of our knowledge the original fethname has not survived and we could not trance any other printed version or edition of the French translation. We could find one surviving copy of a Spanish translation of Selim’s letter which was addressed to Pope Leo X titled Carta de nuevas grandes buenas y ciertas embiada a nuestro s. padre Leon X de las cosas que han passado en Levante entre el gran turcho y el gran solda Valencia Juan Viñao 1517; Norton 1256 IB 11215 USTC 344377 kept at Cambridge University Library F151.d.8.12.<br /> <p><p><br /> Provenance: Bookplate of Georgios Arvanitidis 1876–1953 a noted Constantinopolitan collector of books on Turkish and Greek history. Bookplate with the motto “On abuse du vrai†of Antoine Mouradian.<br /> <p><p><br /> Ref.: Bibliographically unrecorded.<br /> <p><p><br /> Bibl.: Setton K. M. Hazard H. ‎Very Good. Quarto half black leather marbled boards title stamped in gilt on spine. Offprints from the Reichs-Gesetz-Blatt of 1856 and 1878 bound together paginated 209-249; 177-209 very good light rubbing to leather. Important pair of treaties: the Paris 1856 treaty effectively concluded the Crimean War. The Western European powers pledged to maintain the integrity of the Ottoman Empire and restored the respective territories of the Russian and the Ottoman Empires to their prewar boundaries. They also neutralized the Black Sea for international trade: it was a huge setback for Russian influence in the region. The Treaty of Berlin 1878 came at the conclusion of the Russo-Turkish war and was a remapping of the Balkans pushing back Russian claims and forcing the Ottomans to accept the loss of major European holdings in a plan largely orchestrated by Bismarck. From 1849 to 1918 the Reichsgesetzblatt legal abbreviation: RGBl. was the official publication organ of the Imperial Patents Laws Regulations and State Treaties of the Austrian monarchy--at the time of these treaties under Franz Josef I. Although not stated owned by Ulysses Grant-Smith 1870-1959 a lifelong diplomat who was stationed in Vienna as part of the American Legation through WWI and who was later the American signatory of the US-Hungarian Peace Treaty of 1921 which had to be done separately because the US senate refused to be part of the Treaty of Trianon. These two treaties would have been good historical preparation for his approach to the 1921 treaty. unknown‎

‎Armin Vambery [born Hermann Wamberger; also Arminius Vambery; Armin Vambery] (1832-1913), Hungarian Jewish authority on Ottoman‎

‎Ãrmin Vámbéry Hermann Wamberger; Ãrminius Vámbéry Hungarian Jewish traveller and authority on the Ottoman Empire. Autograph Note Signed 'Armin Vambery' to 'Mr Blacket' asking 'how many pages of print are in the first volume'.‎

‎'Wedesday' no date. On monogram letterhead combining the letters C and A. 1p 12mo. In good condition lightly aged. Folded twice. Reads: 'Dear Mr Blacket I should wish to know in the course of the day how many pages of print are in the first volume.' Despite the spelling of the name the recipient is presumably either Henry Blackett 1825-1871 of the publishers Hurst and Blackett or one of the four of his sons to become publishers. There is no record of a book by Vámbéry being published by a Blacket or Blackett but he may be referring to an essay or article published in a periodical or compilation or an anonymous or pseudonymous work. 'Wedesday' [no date]. On monogram letterhead combining the letters C and A. unknown‎

‎Mustafa Resid Pasha Musfafa Rechid Pacha 1800 1858 Ottoman statesman and diplomat chief architect behind the Tanzimat reforms‎

‎Autograph Letter Signed 'Réchid.' in French to the author 'Monsieur Ivichievich of Wallachia' of an 'ouvrage intitulé Panigraphie sic for 'Pangraphie'' which he will recommend to 'nos amateurs des langues en orient'.‎

‎30 July 1844; Constantinople. 1p 4to. On aged paper with traces of glue from mount on reverse and six short diagonal scalpel-cuts four of them across the text not the signature. He will recommend the work 'à nos amateurs des langues en orient'. In thanking him for 'cet offre' he expresses happiness at having made the recipient's acquaintance 'quoique par écrit'. 'Panigraphie' is clearly a mistake for 'Pangraphie' but no record to the publication of a work with that title has been discovered. In Mannheim in 1807 Heinrich Bürmann printed a 'Programme de la pangraphie partie fondamentale de la caractéristique syntactique système de notation universelle' and in 1850 Chambers' Edinburgh Journal reported that 'a Monsieur Ivichievich of Wallachia submits a plan of what he calls 'Pangraphie' or universal writing'. The earliest use of the word 'pangraphic' 'writing on all subjects or in all forms' recorded in the OED is in 1821. 30 July 1844; Constantinople. unknown‎
