Cf. M. Firpo, 'Pietro Bizzarri esule italiano del cinquecento', Torino, Giappichelli, 1971. (Atabey, 110-111. Blackmer, 147. Brunet, II, col. 1956 qui signale que cette édition est "rare". Cobham-Jeffery, p.5. Göllner, I, 1612.

Editions Droz 1984). (Adams L-1644. Brunet, Suppl. I, 906).

‎Brewer, David‎

‎The Greek War of Independence 1821-1833.‎

‎"For the Greeks, the fight for independence from the Ottoman Empire was a cruel business, and its consequences far-reaching. Today's Greece is much more the child of that struggle than it is of the Classical period we know so much better. Because of Ottoman oppression and its brutal end, hostility to Turkey still smoulders, as does suspicion that foreign powers manipulate Greece for their own ends. For much of the war the Greek cause looked hopeless. The rebels could call only on lightly armed merchant ships and a long tradition of brigandage, which seemed no match for a formidable empire. Foreign philhellenes joined the Greek cause but foreign governments cared less for the Greeks than for the stability of Europe, hard-won by Napoleon's defeat. Nevertheless the Greeks won victories at sea, largely due to their use of terrifying fireships, and on land under the leadership of the charismatic Kolokotroms. Civil war then broke out among the Greeks, and for a time Kolokotroms swapped his tent for a prison cell. But support for Greece was growing, as all Europe was moved by Turkish massacres, by the death of Byron, most famous philhellene of all, and by the bloody invasion of the Peloponnese by Ottoman troops brought in by sea from Egypt. The governments of Europe now demanded an end to the fighting, and an allied fleet under Admiral Codrington sailed to meet the Ottoman navy at Navarino Bay. Nervous fingers fired inevitable shots, sixty Turkish ships were sent to the sea bed, and Greek freedom was finally assured. This is a powerful, fearsome and inspiring story, and David Brewer's book covers it fully for the first time in over a century, dealing evenhandedly with the courage, cunning and barbarism of Greeks and Turks alike." 393p. illus maps.bibliography.index (name on ffep, else fine ) Book‎

‎Bicheno, Hugh‎

‎Crescent and Cross: The Battle of Lepanto 1571‎

‎: "For much of the last fourteen hundred years the relationship between Christianity and Islam has been extremely troubled. Competition, misunderstanding and fanaticism led to frequent conflicts between those marching under the banners of the two religions, often ferocious in the extreme and studded with atrocities. Yet between these episodes - even at times in the midst of them - Muslims and Christians traded and associated with each other without any inherent animosity." "This book describes an event widely believed to herald the ultimate supremacy of western culture. On the morning of 7 October 1571, at the mouth of a gulf in western Greece, the fleets of the Muslim Ottoman Empire and the Roman Catholic Holy League collided in the last great battle ever to be fought between oared fighting ships. The Battle of Lepanto was the outstanding military event in a sixteenth century marked by constant warfare, and the greatest single battle ever fought between crescent and cross. Many believe that it changed the balance of power in the Mediterranean forever, and turned back a Muslim tide that threatened to engulf Europe." "However, as Hugh Bicheno shows here, the symbolic importance of Lepanto far outweighed its military significance. This timely book is the first major study of the battle ever written in English, and the first for many years in any language. It is enormous in scope, tracing the lines of history that came together at that time and place to explain why an event that barely affected the geopolitical balance in the Mediterranean is regularly counted among the decisive battles of history. Not least, as an illustration of the complex human reality behind an age-old conflict, the story is acutely relevant to the history we are living at present" 350p.illus (some col.) maps, tables, chronology, appendices, endnotes, bibliography. index. ‎The Siege‎

‎In the early fifteenth century, as winter falls away, the people of Albania know that their fate is sealed. They have refused to negotiate with the Ottoman Empire, and war is now inevitable. Soon enough dust kicked up by Turkish horses is spotted from a citadel. Brightly coloured banners, hastily constructed minarets and tens of thousands of men fill the plain below. From this moment on, the world is waiting to hear that the fortress has fallen. The Siege tells the enthralling story of the weeks and months that follow of the exhilaration and despair of the battlefield, the constantly shifting strategies of war, and those whose lives are held in balance, from the Pasha himself to the technicians, artillerymen, astrologer, blind poet and harem of women that accompany him. ‎High Albania‎

‎Facsimile reprint of the original edition published by Edward Arnold in 1909, with an added introduction by John Hodgson. "The celebrated account of the late Victorian traveller who became a legend in her own lifetime through her extraordinary travels in the Balkans. Born in 1863, the daughter of a distinguished surgeon, Edith Durham began her career as an artist and illustrator. Following her doctor's orders after an illness and depression, she sailed to Montenegro and began a life-long love affair with the Balkans. In a letter she writes, "It occurred to me that the vexed question of Balkan politics might be solved by studying the manners and customs of each district, and so learning to whom each place should really belong." Thus she cheerfully started on her expeditions that, she was well aware, ignored the intrigues of the Great Powers who were actively encouraging the dismemberment of the Turkish Empire. This is a passionate and flamboyant account of her travels, particularly in the mountainous terrain of northern Albania, where she cut a strange figure in her waterproof skirt and Scotch plaid golf cape but won the trust of the people there." ‎Lewy, Guenter‎

‎The Armenian Massacres in Ottoman Turkey: A Disputed Genocide (Utah Series in Turkish and Islamic Stud)‎

‎[Utah Series In Turkish And Islamic Studies ] In 1915, the Ottoman government, then run by the Young Turks, deported most of its Armenian citizens from their eastern Anatolian lands. According to reliable estimates, close to forty percent of the prewar population perished, many in brutal massacres. Armenians call it the first genocide of the twentieth century. Turks speak of an instance of intercommunal warfare and wartime relocation made necessary by the treasonous conduct of their Armenian minority. The voluminous literature on this tragic episode of World War I is characterized by acrimony and distortion in which both sides have simplified a complex historical reality and have resorted to partisan special pleading. The Armenian Massacres in Ottoman Turkey examines the rich historical evidence without political preconceptions. Relying on archival materials as well as eye-witness testimony, Guenter Lewy avoids the sterile "was-it-genocide-or-not" debate and presents a detailed account of what actually happened. The result is a book that will open a new chapter in this contentious controversy and may help achieve a long-overdue reconciliation of Armenians and Turks. 370p. bibligraphy.index Book‎

‎The Reign of the Favored Women‎

‎"The great Turkish empire of the seventeenth century, the most powerful of its day, was ruled by women who had been brought to Constantinople as slaves for the Sultan's pleasure-but used their slavery to acquire power on a global scale. The harem slave Safiye, "the Fair One" as she is known, is the embodiment of beauty-and ambition. With her perfumed body and bewitching eyes, she rules the men who own her. She controls the Empire from within the veiled harem walls, her web of intrigue reaching far beyond Constantinople and into Europe. Her touch is felt in wars, acts of sabotage, and the machinations of both European and Asian politics. The aim of her ambition? To see that her son becomes ruler of the Ottoman Empire. She will allow nothing to stand in her way." 15p.glossary.Clean copy but corners bumped. Book‎

‎Goodwin, Jason‎

‎Lords of the Horizons ; a History of The Ottoman Empire‎

‎"Since the Turks first shattered the glory of the French crusaders in 1396, the Ottoman Empire has exerted a long, strong pull on Western minds. For six hundred years, the Empire swelled and declined. Islamic, martial, civilized, and tolerant, in three centuries it advanced from the dusty foothills of Anatolia to rule on the Danube and the Nile; at the Empire's height, Indian rajahs and the kings of France beseeched its aid. For the next three hundred years the Empire seemed ready to collapse, a prodigy of survival and decay. Early in the twentieth century it fell. In this dazzling evocation of its power, Jason Goodwin explores how the Ottomans rose and how, against all odds, they lingered on. In the process he unfolds a sequence of mysteries, triumphs, treasures, and terrors unknown to most American readers. This was a place where pillows spoke and birds were fed in the snow; where time itself unfolded at a different rate and clocks were banned; where sounds were different, and even the hyacinths too strong to sniff. Dramatic and passionate, comic and gruesome, Lords of the Horizons is a history, a travel book, and a vision of a lost world all in one."352p.illus bibliography.index Book‎

‎SERGUINE (Jacques)‎

‎Istanbul Loti.‎
