‎New English Paperback. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 17 cm). In English and Turkish. 260 p., color ills. Architectural survey at the necropolis of Larisa (Buruncuk).= Larisa (Buruncuk) nekropolünde mimari arastirmalar. In the second issue of ITU Foundation - Architectural History Research, the necropolis of ancient Larisa (Buruncuk), an important Aegean site, is displayed along with the architectural documentation of its grave units. This main topic is complemented by a text on the first map of Larisa from 1900 and a general description of the site. The necropolis of Larisa predominantly consists of small grave mounds with a ring- wall. The southernmost edge of the entire terrain is crowned by the Great Tumulus which is of colossal size. The formation of the necropolis must have occurred essentially between the 6 th and 4 th centuries BCE. However, discussions of dating, considerations on the social aspect of the graves, and the re-evaluation of 20 th century burial finds will be accomplished over time only after the termination of fieldwork. The texts, drawings and photographs in this issue serve the intention of registering the Larisa survey as an ITU Project, and presenting immediately the city's necropolis that is of great importance for the studies on the region.‎

‎The lure of the East: British orientalist painting.= Dogu'nun cazibesi: Britanya oryantalist resmi. [Exhibition catalogue].‎

‎New English Paperback. 4to. (28 x 24 cm). In English and Turkish. 360 p., color ills. The lure of the East: British orientalist painting.= Dogu'nun cazibesi: Britanya oryantalist resmi. [Exhibition catalogue]. This exhibition focused on the paintings made by British artists of the 'Orient', primarily during the nineteenth century. In this context the term 'Orient', to Western Europeans, meant those parts of the eastern Mediterranean world which could be accessed relatively easily such as Egypt, Palestine and Turkey, particularly after the development of steamboat and rail travel in the 1830s. In these places, predominantly Muslim and at least nominally under the control of the Ottoman Empire, British artists, such as David Roberts, David Wilkie, William Holman Hunt, John Frederick Lewis and Frederic Leighton, sought to develop imagery which captured what they believed to be characteristic of the people, cities and landscapes of the region. In the 1970s the Palestinian-American academic Edward Said published his treatise on Orientalism, initiating a global debate over Western representations of the Middle East. For many, such representations now appeared to be a sequence of fictions, serving the West's desire for superiority and control over the East. The argument for and against Said's Orientalism has continued for thirty years. Its resonance for an exhibition such as this one, however, is as strong as ever given that, by the 1920s (the end of the period covered by this exhibition), Britain was in direct control of much of the newly abolished Ottoman Empire, including Egypt, Palestine and Iraq. As Said argued, these images cannot be viewed in isolation from their wider political and cultural context. Keeping the debates around Orientalism in mind, "The Lure of the East" focuses on the range of pictorial options open to British artists, within five major themes: portraits, genre, religious and domestic subjects and landscape. British painters came to the Middle East from a culture steeped in technical and compositional artistic traditions. Such traditions were not easily unlearned, despite the apparent difference of the people and places the artists encountered on their travels. Given this, British Orientalist painters found many challenges in attempting to represent the Middle East, but they also found inspiration and, more importantly, the freedom to rework, reinvent and even discard those conventions that defined picture-making in Britain.‎

‎The trial of the American spies in Bulgaria. Defendant Mikhail Shipkov.‎

‎Very Good English Modern decorative cloth. Demy 8vo. (21 x 14 cm). In English. 125, [2] p. The trial of the American spies in Bulgaria. 2000 copies were printed. A report of the trial of M. Shipkov and others. Mihail (Michael) Todorov Shipkov was born to a wealthy family in Bulgaria on January 1, 1911. His secondary education was at the prestigious American founded and Christian based Robert College on the European side of Istanbul, Turkey. His family had derived its wealth from extracting rose oil. With the coming of Communism in Bulgaria after World War Two, the family lost their wealth when their rose fields and factories were nationalized. Reportedly, Communist authorities confiscated 9,000 kilograms of rose oil. Fluent in English, Mihail Shipkov then became a translator at the American Legation in Sofia. It was the worst of political times in Bulgaria. The Cold War was hot: staff members of the American Legation were harassed, arrested, and some died under very suspicious circumstances. For example, in August 1949, Ivan Seculov, a Bulgarian translator employed by the American Legation, died after "falling" out of a four-story window three days after his arrest by the state security militia (secret police). One report has him committing suicide rather than being released from prison to work as a police agent. The truth might never be known. In 1949, the American Legation attempted to get Mihail Shipkov, then 39 years old, and his family exit visas to leave Bulgaria for the United States. The police (militia) opened an investigative file with the code name "????????" (Rodoviiat), translated as "Pink" - not referring to the color, but to his family's rose oil production. On Saturday, August 21, 1949, at 2:30 PM, Mihail Shipkov was arrested by the state security militia, after leaving the American Legation, and taken to the National Assembly building... ‎New Turkish Paperback. Demy 8vo. (21 x 14 cm). In Turkish. 72 p., b/w plates. Anadolu'da bulunan Türkçe yazilmis ilk metinlerden yeni bir kesif (Metinler - çeviri - inceleme - dizin). As a new discovery, an Arabic manuscript book is found recently which has an unlighted identity and content that is progressively being analysed in detail. Interestingly in a few texts written in Turkic of the manuscript, Turkic phrases "olga" and "bolga" are both used, indicatively both Eastern Turkic and Western Turkic features can be seen in the texts. And thus, indications of the Turkic language Seljukian which has an "hybrid" grammatical specialities are determined in the texts of the manuscript. The texts are on the illuminating point of the Turkish language history from the perspective of their lingual historical era and for the progression in the centuries of the Turkish language. Grammatical specialities of the texts are also very important for the researches on the history and sources of Turkish language and literature in terms of increasing the present accumulation of knowledge. This book comprises the first results and stage of the analyse and reconnoitre on the manuscript which is conserved as an important discovery. Following results and stages of the research in order to get advanced conclusions are planned on the manuscript. In this work, methodologically at first, general physical features and the condition of the manuscript are clarified and a philological commentary on the Turkish language era of the texts, transcription, translation, detailed grammatical index and facsimiles of the 4 Turkic texts existing in the manuscript are presented.‎

‎The dervishes of sovereignty, the sovereignty of dervishes: The Mevlevi Order in Istanbul.= Saltanatin dervisleri, dervislerin saltanati: Istanbul'da Mevlevilik.‎

‎New English Paperback. Pbo. Large 8vo. (22 x 20 cm). In English and Turkish. 274 p., color and b/w ills. The dervishes of sovereignty, the sovereignty of dervishes: The Mevlevi Order in Istanbul.= Saltanatin dervisleri, dervislerin saltanati: Istanbul'da Mevlevilik. Due to Unesco's designation of 2007 as the 800th anniversary of Mevlânâ Celâleddîn-i Rûmî's (1207-1273) birth, Suna and Inan Kiraç Foundation Istanbul Research Institute prepared the exhibition The Dervishes of Sovereignty, The Sovereignty of Dervishes: The Mevlevî Order in Istanbul, in order to shed light upon the Sufi history of Istanbul and to commemorate once again the life of Rumi. A mystical institution of medieval Islam at the end of 13th century with respect to its social and cultural roots, the Mevlevî Order assumes its unique place in the world due to Istanbul's close interaction with the Renaissance in Europe and embarks upon a journey that leads from Konya to Istanbul, upon Sultan Mehmed II's conquest of the latter. As part of the historical continuum that lasts for centuries, the Mevlevî Order is transformed from an Eastern mentality to becoming the epitome of an intellectual and spiritual bridge between the East and the West. Following the inauguration of the Galata Mevlevî Lodge in 1491, although the Order finds the opportunity to expand into the Balkan and Mediterranean geography, the Mevlevî sheikh families of Istanbul lay the foundations of the Istanbul Mevlevî Order as of the mid-17th century. Representing the chivalry of word, the universality of heart, and the sanctity of spirit, the Mevlevîs of Istanbul weave the Mevlevî symbolism, which has been shaped in the medieval mystical culture of Islam, into the texture of daily life. In an effort to give spirit to matter, these unique men are the architects of a vast cultural spectrum that ranges from clothing to ordinary objects and from works of art to colloquial language. Brought to life through the collaborative efforts of exhibition curator Ekrem Isin and exhibition consultant Prof. M. Baha Tanman and comprised of levhas (panels), engravings, photographs, and daily objects, which constitute an important part of the visual archives of the Ottoman Empire, The Dervishes of Sovereignty, The Sovereignty of Dervishes: The Mevlevî Order in Istanbul exhibition and catalogue is a mystical journey into the ney-playing, whirling dervishes.‎

‎New New English Original bdg. Dust wrapper. 4to. (30 x 25 cm). In English and Turkish. 336 p., ills. The sifahanes of philanthropic monuments of the Seljuk and Ottoman eras.= Anadolu Selçuklu ve Osmanli sefkat abideleri sifahaneler. Over the course of centuries, charitable institutions such as schools, madrasas, caravansaries, public baths, mosques, and soup kitchens were built in the Seljuk and Ottoman lands as monuments of voluntary service to the people. Based on religious beliefs cast in the mold of beneficence, Anatolia was endowed with these monuments of compassion. One example of these institutions was the hospitals. In these institutions people were treated free of charge regardless of their religion, the language they spoke, or their race. Sifahenes were the hospitals of the time. They were treatment sanctuaries for travelers, merchants, and the homeless. These darüssifas, which assumed the role of hospitals, took shape during the era of Islamic civilization and continued to provide service throughout the Seljuk and Ottoman eras as wel. Sufahanes, regarded as "a house of healing" or "a refuge of health", were usually called a darüssifa (house of healing); however, in different eras and different places they were referred to as bîmarhâne (house for the sick), bîmâristan, mâristan (abode of the sick), dârülmerza (house of the sick), dârülâfiye (house of wellbeing), dârüssihha (house of health; Arabic) sifahane, (house of health; Persian) dârü't-tibb (house of medicine), sifaiyye (that which is for healing), and tîmârhâne (house of caressing).‎
