This solitary place was a pilgrim sanctuary and the sacred centre for the ancient Karians; a paved road for sacred processions led there from Milas. The shrine at Labraunda was the most important one in this part of Karia. This guide to the Swedish excavations contains both a description of the buildings that were erected in honour of the god Zeus Labraundos and an account of how the site was rediscovered in the 19th century. Labraunda is worth a visit not only because of the well-preserved remains of the unique banqueting hall Andron A and the other ruins, but also for the beautiful location and the splendid panorama view it offers. It is also unusual to find an ancient sanctuary, which, after its heyday, remained almost unchanged. It is therefore still possible to imagine what the sanctuary looked like in the 4th century BC, at the time when Karia was ruled by Maussollos and Idrieus.

As early as the Great Exhibition of 1851 in London, replicas of parts of well-known buildings (such as the Alhambra) were displayed inside the main structure, the Crystal Palace; separate pavilions for different nations outside the main exhibition hall were first built for the Paris Universal Exposition of 1867. By gathering architectural pieces from all over the world, the fair grounds introduced the notion of an imaginary journey and created a new type of tourism, en place. Architectural displays became indispensable at every fair, setting the precedent for the "period room" and the "outdoor architectural museum.".

Gods carved in stone. The Hittite rock sanctuary of Yazilikaya.

The rock sanctuary of Yazilikaya is one of the most important ritual sites of the Late Bronze Age in Turkey. Its walls are decorated with unique rock-cut reliefs: over ninety male and female deities, animals and mythical beings - more than half of all known Hittite reliefs. The sanctuary once lay on the outskirts of Hattusa, capital of the Hittite Empire, in central Anatolia. The German Archaeological Institute has been excavating here since 1931 and the rock sanctuary of Yazilikaya has been thoroughly investigated in the process. While scientific literature is plentiful, what is lacking is a "complete Yazilikaya": a comprehensively illustrated publication in English intended both for experts and the broader reading public. This book is intended to fill that gap. It offers the reader a virtual tour of the sanctuary and can also serve as a guidebook for visitors to the site. At the same time it summarizes the results of earlier excavations as well as the latest research. Lavishly illustrated with spectacular new photographs of the rock massif, it contains a detailed description of the rock chambers with the reliefs and the accompanying temple buildings. This section is followed by chapters reconstructing the history of the sanctuary and discussing its still mysterious function. Other chapters focus on the Hittites and their capital city, the discovery of the site and its research history and much more besides - with the aim of bringing the ancient monument vividly to life before the reader's eyes.
