‎TUTI-NAMA].‎

‎Das Papageien-buch: Aus der türkischen Fassung übertragen von Georg Rosen.‎

‎Fine Fine German Original yellow cloth bdg. Dust wrapper. Cr. 8vo. (19 x 12 cm). In German. 415, [1] p. Edition of this book which was translated by Rosen, directly from Turkish text. Tutinama literal meaning "Tales of a Parrot", is a 14th-century series of 52 stories in Persian. The work remains well-known largely because of a number of lavishly illustrated manuscripts, especially a version containing 250 miniature paintings was commissioned by the Mughal Emperor, Akbar in the 1550s. The Persian text used was redacted in 14th century AD from an earlier anthology 'Seventy Tales of the Parrot' in Sanskrit compiled under the title Sukasaptati (a part of katha literature) dated to the 12th century AD. In India, parrots (in light of their purported conversational abilities) are popular as storytellers in works of fiction. Georg Friedrich Wilhelm Rosen, (1820-1891), was a German (Lippe / Prussian) orientalist and diplomat. He studied in Berlin and Leipzig. From 1844, he was a dragoman at the Prussian embassy in Constantinople. From 1853 he was the Prussian consul in Jerusalem. From 1867 he was Consul General of the North German Confederation (from 1871, the German Empire) in Belgrade. In 1875, Rosen returned to Detmold, where, in May 1907, the Rosenstraße was named in his honor.‎

Kreutel und Otto Spies (Osmanische Geschichtsschreiber IV). Osman Agha was an Ottoman army officer and one of the few Turkish-language autobiographers of the era. ‎Approaching Ottoman history: An introduction to the sources.‎

‎New English Paperback. Roy. 8vo. (23 x 15 cm). In English. [x], 262 p. Approaching Ottoman history: An introduction to the sources. By considering both archival and narrative sources, she demonstrates why they were prepared, encouraging her readers to adopt a critical approach to their findings. While the book is essentially a guide to a complex discipline for initiates into the field, the experienced Ottomanist will find much that is original and provocative in its sophisticated interpretation.‎

‎New Persian Original bdg. HC. 4to. (29 x 23 cm). Text in Persian and preface in English; bilingual title in English and Persian on the cover. 267, [3] p., color and b/w ills. Fifty years with the legacy of Dr. Mahdi Bayani, (1968-2018).= Panjâh sâl bâ duktur Mahdî Bayânî, (1346-1396). Bayânî, (1906-1968), specialist in Persian manuscripts and calligraphy and pioneer in the field of Persian librarianship. Though born in Hamadan, he was the scion of a long line of divan secretaries and fiscal officers (mostawfi) from Faahan. He was related to Mirza Salman Farahani, secretary and confidant of Abu'l-Qasem Khan Na?er-al-Molk Hamadani, whose title Bayan-al-Sal?ana is apparently the origin of the family name (Bayani, A?wal o atar-e ?osnevisan, 2nd ed., Tehran, 1363 S./1984, introd. by ?. Ma?bubi Ardakani, p. 3). Bayani received his early education and training in calligraphy at the Aqdasiya and Asraf primary schools and, after graduating from the secondary school Dar al-Fonun, enrolled in the Dar al-Moallemin-e Ali (later Danes-sare-ye Ali; higher teachers' college). In 1324 sh./1945, Bayani received a doctorate in Persian literature from the University of Tehran. While serving as chief imperial librarian, Bayani also taught courses on the evolution of Persian scripts and on codicology. He was a long-time member of the Iran-Soviet Cultural Society and edited the journal Payam-e now (q.v.). He also founded a society for the support and publicizing of calligraphers and the calligraphic arts (Anjoman-e ?emayat-e ?a?? o ?a??a?an). His biographical dictionary of Iranian calligraphers, A?wal o atar-e ?osnevisan, is one of the most important research tools in Persian codicology. Bayani's pioneering efforts in the fields of bibliography and manuscript identification, evaluation, and collection have yielded valuable catalogues of major holdings in Iran. In the Ottoman Empire, the word "esnaf" (craftsman, tradesman) covered a wide category of people, referring to artists as well as artisans. In fact, anyone who produced or sold something, or provided a service, in short anyone who worked for a living, was included in the category. The master artisans who produced prayer beads were considered as esnaf, as were the watermen who roamed the streets bare-foot crying "abates love's fire" as they freely distributed curative water. Members of the old fire squads entered the esnaf category as did porters. Peddlers formed another part of the esnaf mosaic. These poor people who carried their heavy load, walking the streets of istanbul often bare foot and dressed in rags, originated from the provinces. This book is not a historical research on the esnaf. It is a series of portraits gathered from the cinders of Ottoman social history‎

The Ottoman palace women (Women in Turkey).= Osmanli saray kadinlari (Türkiye'de kadin). Ottoman palace women is the third volume of study entitled Women in Turkey, and is a detailed and documentational account of how women of many races, faiths and creeds entered palace service, and of their lifestyles from the humblest to those who attained the coveted position of favourite of wife to the sultan. It was impossible for anyone but the members of the sultan's own household to see and describe the harem of the Ottoman palace. That is why, with rare exceptions, the portrayals of palace officials, female slaves, odalisques, favourites, wives and sultan mothers by foreign artists who visited Istanbul at various times are mere figments of the imagination and as such are interesting testimony to the power of imagination and artistic ability of European painters...".‎

Turkish Edition of the Ottoman nautical charts and the Atlas of Ali Macar Reis. 16th century Ottoman nautical charts figure significantly in the history of cartography. Dating from the time when the Ottoman Empire was approaching its zenith of wealth and power, these charts are a valuable source of information about the history of the period. The work of the Ottoman privateers who then held sway over most of the Mediterranean, these charts cover a geographical area far beyond the bounds of the Ottoman Empire. as rulers of an expanding empire, the Ottoman sultans took a close interest in mapmaking and may well have commissioned their sea captains to draw the charts. When Piri Reis presented his first world map to Sultan Selim I, conqueror of Egypt, in 1517, the sultan is said to have declared, "How small is the world for a conqueror.".‎

‎Ottoman nautical charts and the atlas of Ali Macar Reis.‎

‎Fine Fine English Original bdg. Dust wrapper. Folio. (33 x 23 cm). In English. 159, [1] p., color ills. Ottoman nautical charts and the Atlas of Ali Macar Reis. When Piri Reis presented his first world map to Sultan Selim I, conqueror of Egypt, in 1517, the sultan is said to have declared, "How small is the world for a conqueror.". A very heavy volume.‎
