‎MIRZA REZA KHAN DANISH ARFAUDDAWLA, (1846-1937).‎

‎[SECRET TREATIES / ANGLO-PERSIAN AGREEMENT OF 1919] Manzûme-yi Sulh ve re'y-i Dânîsh [ve tercümesi]. [i.e. Peace agreement and views of Mirzâ Dânîsh]. Translated into Ottoman Turkish by Ferid [Kam].‎

‎Very Good Persian First Edition of this extremely rare bilingual tractate including Prince Reza Khan's thoughts on Anglo-Persian agreement in1919. Mirza Reza Khan also known as Prince Rezâ Arfa', was a diplomat and poet of the late Qajar period who serviced in Constantinople. During his years of service abroad Reza became acquainted with a number of European political leaders. He was reported to entertain Russian sympathies and was certainly instrumental in negotiating the first Russian government loan to Persia, in 1317 / 1900. Nevertheless, he also appears to have supported the Anglo-Persian Agreement of 1919. In 1332 / 1914 he served as minister of justice (wazîr-e 'adlîya) in Tehran for about a year. This agreement in 1919 was a provisional agreement made between the British and the Persian governments which, if ratified, would have granted the British a paramount position of control over the financial and military affairs of Iran. From the days when Napoleon conceived the idea of invading India with the help of Alexander I, the Tsar of Russia, Great Britain contemplated with apprehension the invasion of India by Russia via Persia and Afghanistan. Under the Anglo-Russian Convention of 1907 (q.v.), which divided Persia into rival spheres of influence, southern Persia was assigned to Britain while Russia controlled the northern portion. Later, according to the terms of "The Secret Treaties of Constantinople" of 18 March 1915, Constantinople was promised to Russia, and England was allowed to incorporate within her sphere of influence the neutral zone of Persia. (Source: Encyclopedia Iranica). Original wrappers. Slightly chipped on extremities and occasionally foxing on cover. Otherwise a very good copy. Roy. 8vo. (23 x 16 cm). Bilingual in Persian and Ottoman script. [34] p., 7-18 pp. text in Persian, 19-34 pp. translation to Ottoman Turkish, a portrait of Prince Mirza Riza Han with a printed signature and inscription, and facsimile litho page of his manuscript poem in his calligraphy. Turkish chapter is in nashkh, Persian chapter is in taliq script. Lithography. Not in OCLC.; Özege 25155.; TBTK 8061. First Edition. Extremely rare.‎

‎[PROPAGANDA MAP SPREADING THE WORD THAT TURKEY IS WINNING THE WAR] Map of West Anatolia and the Archipelago showing the fronts of Turkish War of Independence in 1921-22. Tercümân-i Hakîkât'in kârilerine hediyesi. [i.e. Extra suppl. to 'Tercümân-i Hakîkat' Newspaper].‎

‎Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) An extremely rare litho propaganda map published as an extra supplement to the Tercümân-i Hakîkat [i.e. The Translator of Truth] newspaper just before the proclamation of Republic in Turkey in 1923 by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk (1881-1938), showing the front in West Anatolia during the War of Independence (or National Struggle) between 1919-1922 against Greek forces. The upside of the map between the note as title 'Gift to the readers of 'Tercümân-i Hakîkat', Mustafa Kemal Atatürk's portrait among decorated heroic lithographed drawings. In the lower right corner, can be seen legends of the map, scale, and mapmaker's signature. Tercümân-i Hakîkat was a daily newspaper published in Istanbul between 1878-1921 during the Ottoman Empire. Tercüman-i Hakîkat, the most important newspaper published during the reign of Sultan Abdülhamid II, was founded by novelist Ahmed Midhat Efendi, (1844-1912). In the beginning, most of the articles were written by Ahmed Midhat Efendi. It was an encyclopedic newspaper with the aim of inculcating and educating reading habits among the Turks and it played an important role in the training of many famous Ottoman journalists. Its first issue was published on June 26, 1878. After Ahmed Midhat's death in 1913, the newspaper changed owners, and the last issue was published on February 11, 1921. Ibrahim Alaettin Gövsa, (1889-1949), was an Ottoman / Turkish journalist, educator, and intellectual who supported the War of Independence the most. This propaganda map published in Tercümân-i Hakîkat, during the war in 1920 or 1921, is a propaganda tool that calls on the literate people belonging to a certain class, especially those living in Istanbul, to support the war, and aims to spread the word that Turkey is winning the war. Original lithograph map. 50x35,5 cm. In Ottoman script (Turkish with Arabic letters). Scale: 1: 250.000. Occasionally foxing and slight stains on paper, folded traces. Otherwise a very good copy.‎

‎New English Paperback. Pbo. 4to. (31 x 22 cm). In English and Turkish. 80 p., color and b/w ills. An 8200 year old map: The town plan of Çatalhöyük.= 8200 yillik bir harita: Çatalhöyük sehir plani. I was fascinated when I first saw the Catalhoyuk map, a heritage of 'Anatolian Civilizations' which has survived 8,200 years of history, while at the same time I was greatly disappointed that such a unique map was neither known sufficiently enough nor introduced to the cartographic scholars. It was for this reason that about two years ago, I decided to conduct research into the matter. However, as I was already involved in two research projects entitled 'The History of Turkish Mapping in the Republican Era' and 'Historical Relief Maps, ' respectively, it was not possible to find time for the Catalhoyuk map. Once I had completed these studies, I started to carry out my study on 'Piri Reis Kitab-i Bahriye' (Piri Reis and His Book of the Sea) , which has been continiuing for a few years, Thus, my study of the Catalhoyuk map had been delayed once again. When I saw the map once again, in early 1999, I decided that I could not wait any longer. Even though my continuing research would be delayed, I could not avoid giving priority to the study of the Catalhoyuk map. Rockefeller sitting and reading a newspaper on the front cover, and three unnumbered b/w ills. Chipped on spine and a small tear on the back cover. Otherwise a good copy. First and only edition of this rare biography of any member of the Rockefeller family in the Middle East. This exceedingly rare booklet (only three institutional paper copies) contains a brief biography of John Davison Rockefeller Sr., (1839-1937), known as an American philanthropist and the richest man in the world of his time. "Büyük Adamlar Serisi" [i.e. The "Big Men" series] consists of about 41 small books. They were all published in the same year (1927) by a delegation under the presidency of Gövsa and some of them were written by him personally. ‎Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) A fine half leather bdg. with marbled boards. Two volumes in one. Cr. 8vo. (20 x 14 cm). The text in Ottoman script (Old Turkish with Arabic letters) with bilingual titles in Ottoman Turkish and French on frontispieces and title pages. 2 volumes set: (248 p.; 270, [1] p., the first volume has Columbus' engraved portrait frontispiece, the second has Amerigo Vespucci's portrait). Hegira: 1310 = Gregorian: 1893. First and only edition of this very rare book, which is the first Turkish original work on the history of the discovery of America printed for the Quadricentennial of the Discovery. With this book, Christopher Columbus and Amerigo Vespucci quickly became popular among Ottoman readers (soon after Iranian readers with a translation of the first volume only), and immediately among other Middle Eastern readers, and thus the first comprehensive and original text describing Colombus and the discovery of America appeared in the Middle East and Islamic world. It's been published in Istanbul under the title "The history of the discovery and conquest of America". The first volume is on Christopher Columbus, and the second volume is on Amerigo Vespucci, their lives and travels. Andreas Kopassis Efendy (1856-1912) was one of the few Ottoman Greeks proficient in the Ottoman literary language. Cretan Kopassis is an intriguing figure who made a remarkable career serving the Ottoman state. At the time of the publication, he was a member of the State Council (Sura-yi Devlet). He displayed quite an extraordinary interest in scholarly research and he seems to have been one of the first to have studied Ottoman "tahrir defterleri" [i.e. Ottoman tax registers]. This could be called a translation in a sense. Kopassis makes no reference to preceding translations, nor does he refer to Robertson's history of America. His main source was a more recent equally "classic" work on Christopher Columbus, Washington Irving's "History of the life and voyages of Christopher Columbus" (first published in 1828). Another source referred to by Kopassis is J. H. Campe's "Entdeckung von Amerika" (first published in 1781). His educational background is evident particularly in the introductory chapter where ample references are made to Pliny, Ptolemy, and Plato's Timaios which contain allusions to Atlantis. In his takri (Introduction) to this work, Kemalpasazade Said Bey (1848-1921) praised the author for his elegant prose. Sultan Abdülhamid awarded the order of merit (liyâkât) in gold to the author. In the same year (1315=1895), an aide-de-camp at the Iranian Ministry of War, Muhibb-i 'Âli Khan, translated the first volume into Persian. At the turn of the century, Christopher Columbus had become a very popular figure for Ottoman readers of all ages...". ‎[FIRST BOOK ON THE EUROPEAN DISCOVERY AND CONQUEST OF AMERICA IN TURKISH] Amerika kit'asinin hîn-i kesf ü istîlâsinda zuhûra... [i.e. The History and Unfortunate Events that Occurred During the European Conquest of America..,]‎

‎Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Lithographed Edition. First and Only Edition of this first Turkish book exclusively related to America. This very rare work (both in scarce institutional holdings and market rarity) is the first book in Turkish to describe the discovery and conquest of America. Thus, it is an important and early source on America in the Islamic world. "The first treatise [in Turkish] dedicated exclusively to America" (Strauss). It is printed in a format that is specific to the early printing period of the Ottoman Empire and is written in a tâliq script and has the appearance of a manuscript. It has neither a preface nor a proper title. The heading (serlevha) on the first page which is placed in a decorative floral design reads: "First chapter: On the Islands Discovered by the Venetian and Genoese seafarers, and, secondly, on the discovery of America by Christopher Columbus". It also contains the mandatory praise of the ruler, i.e., Sultan Abdülmecid, and indicates that it was "translated and transferred from some selected writings (ba'z-i evrâk-i müntahabe)". The dramatic events of the discovery and of the different conquests by the Spaniards are vividly described in plain and simple language. Though it is not free from clichés adopted from Western sources, the darker aspects of the European expansion are not omitted. Particular interest is devoted to the fauna and flora of the American continent. The modern territorial divisions of the American continent, and briefly, its political history, are dealt with in a special chapter at the end of the book. This chapter comprises information about both North and South America from the Polar Regions (Arazi-i kutbiyye) and "Russian America" (Amerika-i Rusiyye) to the Banda Oriental (Banda) or the Cisplatine Republic (Çisplatin) and the Province of Patagonia (Patakonya Eyaleti). It takes into account the latest developments. The last event referred to is General Soulouque's takeover in Haiti. "[.] ?in Santa Domingo (Sen Domeng), i.e., the island of Haiti, a general from the Negro people appeared in the Frankish year of 1847 and beat the Spaniards and the French. Assuming the title of 'king', he is known today as Faustin I." (p. 54). In fact, General Soulouque (Emperor of Hayti, (1782-1867)) had assumed the title of 'Emperor' in 1849. His reign lasted until 1859. (Source: Nineteenth-Century Ottoman Americana by Johann Strauss). Original wrappers. Occasionally slight stains on some pages and chipped on front cover, otherwise a very good copy. Roy. 8vo. (23 x 16 cm). In Ottoman script (Turkish with Arabic letters). 56 p. Litho. ‎New English Original bdg. HC. 4to. (29 x 22 cm). In English. 195 p., color and b/w plates. Roman archaeology in a South Anatolian landscape: The Via Sebaste, the Mansio in the Döseme Bogazi, and regional transhumance in Pamphylia and Pisidia. An investigation of a Roman road-station in its archaeological and geographical context that provides a new perspective on the historical landscape of southern Anatolia. This study is based on fieldwork carried out during the 1990s in southwest Turkey in the modern vilayets of Burdur and Antalya, and it focuses on the settlements associated with a Roman mansio located in the Döseme Bogazi, the pass that linked Pisidia with the coastal region of Pamphylia. The course of the road and the structures that emerged along it were defined not by the evolution of Pisidia's Hellenized indigenous culture but by the priorities of Roman rule, especially during late antiquity. Furthermore, the study of the road where the mansio was located raises fundamental questions about the role played by this mountain pass in the movement of people and animals between the lowlands and highlands of South-west Anatolia.‎

Twenty unreadable posters reflecting me that I've affixed at various locations in the city in order to communicate with the street. They were able to last for two days only, stuck between the publicity posters and Istanbul's fast changing pace. While the posters I've affixed on temporary panels or on anonymous walls also lasted for two days average, usually the people whose houses face that direction didn't want to see the posters and reacted. Additionally, these posters were collected by garbagemen the morning after. And the people passing by generally showed interest in the posters and tried to read them while questioning what they mean.‎

‎CELÂL ESAD [ARSEVEN], (1876-1972).‎

‎[EARLY BOOK ON THE GENOESE AND THE BYZANTINE BUILDINGS IN CONSTANTINOPLE] Eski Galata ve binalari. [i.e. Old Galata and it's buildings].‎

‎Fine Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Original wrappers. Cr. 8vo. (20 x 14 cm). In Ottoman script (Old Turkish with Arabic letters). 120 p., ills. and many plans, one folded map (50x67 cm) of the Galata quarter surrounded by the Bosphorus and the Golden Horn of Constantinople, including Genoese and Byzantine architectural buildings. First edition of this rare and the early book on old Genoese and Byzantine buildings in the Galata quarter of Constantinople, written by Turkish art historian Celal Esat Arseven (1876-1972). The Galata quarter first appeared in Late Antiquity as Sykai or Syca. By the time the Notitia Urbis Constantinopolitanae has compiled in ca. 425 AD, it had become an integral part of the city as its 13th region. According to the Notitia, it featured public baths and a forum built by Emperor Honorius, a theatre, a portico street, and 435 mansions. It is also probable that the settlement was enclosed by walls in the 5th century. In the 11th century, the quarter housed the city's Jewish community, which numbered some 2,500 people. In 1171, a new Genoese settlement in the area was attacked and nearly destroyed. In 1233, during the subsequent Latin Empire (1204-1261), a small Catholic chapel dedicated to St. Paul was built in place of a 6th-century Byzantine church in Galata. This chapel was significantly expanded in 1325 by the Dominican friars, who officially renamed it the Church of San Domenico, but local residents continued to use the original denomination San Paolo. In 1407, Pope Gregory XII, in order to ensure the maintenance of the church, conceded indulgences to the visitors of the Monastery of San Paolo in Galata. The building is known today as the Arap Camii (Arab Mosque) as per its conversion into a mosque a few years later (between 1475 and 1478) under the rule of Ottoman Sultan Mehmed II with the name Galata Camii. In 1261, the quarter was retaken by the Byzantines, but Emperor Michael VIII Palaiologos granted it to the Genoese in 1267 in accordance with the Treaty of Nymphaeum. This rare book includes the history and the plans of the buildings such as the Arap Mosque (Church of San Domenico) (1325), Galata Tower (1348), Church of Saint Benoit (1427), Zülfaris Synagogue (1823), Church of Saints Peter and Paul (1843), Camondo Steps (1880), St. George's Austrian High School (1882), Ashkenazi Synagogue (1900), Italian Synagogue (1931), Neve Shalom Synagogue, etc. ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Celal Esat Arseven was a Turkish art professor and historian. Born the son of a pasha in Istanbul, Celal Esat Arseven graduated from Besiktas Military School in 1888 and studied drawing at a fine arts school for a year before going to military college. He continued writing and painting while in the army, from which he resigned in 1908. In the years before World War I, he worked at the humor magazine Kalem with Cemil Cem, one of the great early caricaturists of Turkey. Arseven was a writer and artist of diverse talents. In 1918, he wrote a libretto for one of the first Turkish operas and went on to write several musical plays performed at the Istanbul municipal and state theaters. In addition to being an accomplished watercolorist, he was also a professor of architecture and municipal planning at the Istanbul Fine Arts Academy from 1924 to 1941. He published a five-volume art encyclopedia between 1943 and 1954, and many books on Turkish painting and architecture throughout his lifetime. Before his death, he was awarded a doctoral degree by Istanbul University. He was also a delegate to the Turkish Grand National Assembly during its seventh and eighth sessions. (Sources: And, Metin. Limited reprint edition (all copies are numbered) of 1854-1855 Berlin edition of Salzenberg's book exemplifying a growing 19th-century appreciation of Romanesque and 'Byzantine' architecture. For the original edition see Blackmer 1483; Brunet V, 103. "Salzenberg's important work remains the major source of information about the mosaics of St. Sophia". (Blackmer). 1000 copies were printed for individual persons. This copy belonged to 'Ender S. Özer Bagciman. All copies were numbered. (651/1000). The churches Salzenberg describes illustrating the development of a Christian architecture away from the secular long nave basilica or of the classical temple (never intended for congregational use), to a Greek-cross plan with a central dome, allowing greater accessibility to the altar table. Most of the text is devoted to the cathedral of the Holy Wisdom [i.e. Hagia Sophia], built-in Constantinople for Justinian I by Anthemius of Tralles and Isidore of Miletus, who dared to set a large dome over a square with the support of pendentives, achieving, with eastern and western half-domes, an uninterrupted span of over 200 feet. This building provided a model or inspiration to architects of the Middle East and Europe seeking to experiment with central, domed structures. "It was the first work that carried the traces of antisemitic discourse towards the Jewish people in the Ottomans" (Özkul, Çomak, Uzun). Ebüzziya Tevfik, who raised questions such as "why the Jews do not have a homeland", "why they are not moral" and "why they were exiled throughout history", and discussed these in the first two chapters of his book, is in search of a solution to the "Jewish question" in the final chapter despite taking such a harsh stance in advance. Tevfik was a journalist and writer who started in the path of journalism after having worked as a civil servant for a brief time. He published the newspapers Ibret, Hadika, and Sirac (1873) (1873) with Namik Kemal. Ebüzziya Tevfik, who was a member of the Young Ottoman Association, was exiled to Rhodes together with Ahmet Mithat Efendi after the incidents that arose following Namik Kemal's 'Vatan Yahut Silistre' (Country or Boatswain's Pipe) play in 1873. He published 'Mecmua-i Ebuzziya' (1880). He was exiled to Konya in 1890 by the Abdülhamit administration on the grounds that he wasn't suitable for civil service. He was elected as Antalya parliamentary deputy (1908) to the parliament that was formed on the announcement of the Second Constitutional Monarchy. Ebüzziya Tevfik, who prepared compilations and translations on anthologies, theater plays, and memoirs, is known more for his contributions to publishing and as a famous editor of the time than as a writer.
