The Ottoman Empire was endowed with the power of creating one of the most extensive numismatic histories of the world by having coins minted at more than 130 mints as of the 14th century. However, the fact that the Ottoman coins had presence in very few mints whose collective number did not exceed the number of fingers in one hand as of the mid-18th century is the most obvious indicator of the crucial changes in the Ottoman history and economy. These developments which greatly affected coin minting can be summarized briefly as follows: The provinces, where gold or silver coins were minted in addition to Istanbul, were limited with Baghdad, Algeria, Egypt, Tripoli and Tunisia from the enthronement of Sultan Osman III, the 25th Ottoman sultan, to the end of the Empire. Two common features catch the eye when we analyze the history of these provinces that were very critical for the Ottoman Empire. The present volume of this work, which is expected to be completed in nine volumes, covers the reigns of sultans Osman III, Mustafa III, Abdulhamid I, Selim III and Mustafa IV, and contains: Year-by-year chronological information regarding the 54 years of these sultanates; The most significant historical developments of this period; Detailed information on coins. This volume includes the details of 71 coins of Sultan Osman III, 460 coins of Sultan Mustafa III, 401 coins of Sultan Abdulhamid I, 409 coins of Sultan Selim III and 56 coins of Sultan Mustafa IV; i.e. 1478 gold and silver coins. Additionally, the book provides the local history of all provinces which issued coins during these reigns and examines the characteristics of the coins minted in these provinces. An inventory of the coins belonging to the sultans is provided at the end of the book.

For over three decades I had the opportunity to research on Ottoman musical writings in the Turkish libraries and to consult private collections. Concurrently, I was able to study Ottoman musical manuscripts kept in libraries outside Turkey. Along those years of research I carried out persistent investigations that gave me access to a large number of Ottoman materials ranging from the fifteenth century to the end of the nineteenth century. As a result of examining numerous musical manuscripts in Ottoman Turkish literature I discerned the commonplace of themes in the majority of writings and evaluated their structure at formal and generative level. Moreover, I was able to ascertain the significant purport of certain sources over others and to compare several versions of the texts. The idea of this catalogue evolved gradually in my mind from the perception that an explicit presentation of the makams would constitute a valuable reference both for evaluating the historical process of creating and performing music, as well as for establishing the inventory of modal categories and their taxonomic relations. As time passed, I was able to determine the development of a genuine Turkish concept in works that provided descriptive and analytical matter, and to detect through manuscript lines the significance of the process involving the semantics of the practice of music at different periods. The present book is mainly focused upon the practical theory of the makams reflected in the production and performance of the melodic scales the way they are described in Ottoman manuscripts.

The fascinating pictorial scenes on pieces of a bronze shield from a room on the west side of the Haldi Temple in the Upper Anzaf Fortress, discovered in 1995, add greatly to our knowledge of Urartian religion and art. During the fire caused by a Scyhtian attack in the late seventh century B.C. objects and weapons of bronze and iron stored in this small room became molten and distorted, a large portion turning to slag. In recent years conservation of this mass of molten metal, weighing more than 13 kilograms, a number of bronze and iron objects and weapons have been recovered and preserved for the benefit of science. In particular, seven votive rings of cast bronze with cuneiform inscriptions from the co-regency of King Ispuini, Menua and Inuspua has added much to the poorly known political history in the early period of the Urartian Kingdom. Most of the fragments of bronze sheet bearing pictorial scenes come, it has been realized from the same large shield. Conservation of the bronzes is still continuing. Conservation a 78 cm. long piece of the shield over the last three years has, however, revealed scenes of great interest that shed significant new light on our understanding of the art and, particularly, the religion of Urartu. A row of 12 gods are depicted in the same sequence as the pantheon of gods in the Meher Kapi rock inscription which provides much detailed information on the religion of Urartu. Nothing similar to the pantheon in the Meher Kapi inscription, where each god is gven his divine attributes and local characteristics, has previously been found. In its 20 anniversary Arkeoloji ve Sanat is pleased to share with its readers this valuable study which, we believe, makes an important new addition to Anatolian archaeology.
