The book starts off with the Church of St. Savior in Chora, now Kariye Museum, and traces the ancient Byzantine walls passing through Balat and Fener all the way to Cibali. Though rather long, this is a circular route around which it is possible to walk in one day passing synagogues, churches, mosques, palaces, dungeons, tombs, dervish lodges, fountains and Turkish baths in neigborhoods where once inhabited by Jews, Greeks, Bulgars, Moldavians, Wallachians, emperors, sages, drunkards, dervishes and other colorful denizens of the Byzantine and Ottoman empires.

He published books on many areas of Turkish life, cookery, and history, as well as a life of Atatürk, and a universally admired autobiography. He also wrote two educational books for children. In the UK, Orga sought various menial jobs, unsuccessfully, turning eventually to writing in 1949. Portrait of a Turkish Family received exceptional reviews from critics including John Betjeman, Harold Nicolson, Arthur Anderson, Barbara Worsley-Gough and Peter Quennell. From the midst of the fifteenth century on the Ottoman-Turkish Empire played a crucial role in shaping European history. This factor has not been weaved into Western historiography to its detriment, because explaining concepts such as raison d'etat, realpolitik, balance of power or even European identity remain somewhat shortchanged without according the Ottoman-Turkish Empire a role in the evolution as well as functioning of these concepts. Mutual systemic influences are a foregone conclusion however overlooked. This volume comprises nine research articles on the basic characteristics of the Ottoman Empire and its political/economic relations with Europe, published previously, but updated with further evidence. The Ottoman Empire is generally depicted and perceived as the adversary and anti¬thesis of Europe and Europeanness in Western historiography because of certain historic reasons such as the Christian crusading tradition, public hostility due to long lasting warfare, cultural estrangement and perhaps because the Ottomans remained outside the Enlightenment process. However, there is much more to it than confrontation. Our research findings presented in this compilation point to the impact of the Ottoman-Turkish Empire in shaping modern Europe, specifically as of the 16th century and socio-cultural exchanges between the two realms through five hundred years of encounter. Les études que nous avons consacrées respectivement à la chanson akritique et à la presse karamanlie, et, partant, un commun intérêt porté au domaine cappadocien et à ses populations, ont constitué le point de départ de cette recherche menée en collaboration. Notre décision de nous pencher sur la tradition orale des populations orthodoxes de la Cappadoce nous a été dictée par les considérations suivantes: - Une étude systématique faisait défaut qui porterait sur les rapports de la chanson akritique, et particulièrement du 'poème' de Digenis Akritis, avec les épopées et romans musulmans (Sayyid Battal, Köroglou, etc.) . o II n'existait pas d'étude sur les chansons des orthodoxes turco-phones d'Asie Mineure et sur la diffusion des éditions karamanlies de Köroglou, Ashik Garip. Nous avons donc constaté que les traditions orales, les 'monuments vivants' des turcophones avaient été ignorés par les recherches, qui s'étaient attachées exclusivement aux communautés hellénophones. Cette partialité de la curiosité constituait en elle-même un premier objet à interpréter. Nous avons donc été inéluctablement conduits, avant même de procéder à une étude philologique comparative qui exigera de recourir à la philologie et à l'ethnographie turques, à examiner les composantes idéologiques et politiques de la curiosité des intellectuels du 19e siècle envers les monuments oraux de la Cappadoce. Dans notre étude, la première, observons-le, dans ce domaine, nous avons suivi les progrès de la découverte du pays et de ses monuments oraux et son utilisation politique jusqu'à la fin du 19e siècle. Les problèmes abordés dans cette étude tendent à se regrouper en deux faisceaux. Cela découle de la nature des documents, textes grecs et karamanlis, et des traits originaux de la population, grécophone et turcophone, à qui nous les devons.
