Edited with an introduction and annotations by HAKAN KARATEKE.
An Ottoman Protocol Register. Containing ceremonies from 1736 to 1808: BEO Sadaret Defterleri 350 in the Prime Ministry Ottoman State Archives, Istanbul.
New English Original bdg. HC. Roy. 8vo. (24 x17 cm). In English. [xLiv], 223 p., ills., in English; [+] 144 p. facsimile of the BEO 350 Protocol Register in Ottoman script. The BEO 350 protocol register edited here is part of the Sublime Porte Archives series of the Prime Ministry Ottoman State Archives in Istanbul. The register covers a number of ceremonies held on various occasions from 1736 to 1808 and primarily concerned with accession ceremonies, funerals and, most of all, the reception of envoys. This edition of the BEO 350 is accompanied by an introduction, a synoptic list of ceremonies, appendices, and indexes. The introduction examines various aspects of Ottoman ceremonies, particularly those of a diplomatic nature, and includes a section on the gifts and offerings exchanged by the Ottoman administration and foreign envoys. As briefly discussed in the introduction, ceremonies contribute, albeit modestly, to the validation of a regime's political legitimacy and to its smooth functioning. When trying to determine the relationship between ceremonial rites and political power, the lofty symbolism of ceremonies needs to be interpreted with great care. Thus, detailed descriptions such as those found in protocol registers are extremely valuable, indeed indispensable, for a solid interpretation.

The Kizlar Agasi (qizlar aghasi, literally, Agha of the girls), was the chief eunuch off th Ottoman Imperial harem. Although the title may have been applied to the head of the palace harem eunuchs from the empire's early years, the formal office, known as The agha-yi Darüssaade (or, Dar al-Sa'ada), literally "Commander of the Abode Felicity", dates to 996/1588, when Sultan Murad III (r. 1574-1595) transferred the supervision of the Evkâfü'l-Haremeyn (Awkâf al-Haramayn, the imperial pious foundations for the Muslim holy cities of Mecca and Medina) to the head of harem eunuchs from the chief of the eunuchs who guarded the sultan's privy chamber in Topkapi Palace's third court. Until the 14th/19th century, the post was always attached to the supervision of the Evkâfü'l-Haremeyn. Most holders of the office, like most harem eunuchs generally, were Habesî (Habashi, Abyssinian), which in this case was a broad designation encompassing much of the Horn of Africa. (Source: Brill, Encyclopedia of Islam). In the 19th century, agha-yi darussade worked on waqf works.

MEHMED EMIN RAUF PASHA, (Ottoman grand vizier between in the reign of Sultan Mahmud II, (1808-1938) and Sultan Abdulmajid I and Mustafa Resid Pasha, Koca Hüsrev Pasha, Topal Izzet Mehmed Pasha), (1780-1859).
[MANUSCRIPT OTTOMAN HISTORICAL DOCUMENT - BUYURULDI] Early historical document with buyuruldu of the Ottoman Grand Vizier, with two confirmations (two buyuruldus) of a document written 'Bende, Osman'.
Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Original manuscript paper. 40x28 cm. In Ottoman script. 2 p. Mehmed Emin Rauf Pasha was an Ottoman industrialist and statesman, who was Grand Vizier of the Ottoman Empire twice under Mahmud II (reign 1808-1839) and three times under Abdülmecit I (reign 1839-1861) during the Tanzimat period of reformation. He was one of the most prominent figures in funding the Crimean War. According to Shaw and Shaw, Mehmed Emin Rauf Pasha and his predecessor, Mustafa Resit Pasha, "acted mainly as mediators" for Mahmud II, "attempting to balance conflicting interests while participating in the factional activities and disputes endemic in Ottoman governmental life.". Buyuruldu (or Buyrultu, Buyurildi, Buyurdu etc.) is the order of an Ottoman grand vizier, vizier, beglerbegi , defterdâr , or other high officials to a subordinate. The term is derived from the word 'buyuruldi', it has been ordered, in which the order usually ends and which gradually developed into a conventional sign. Buyuruldus are of two main types: a) decisions written in the margin (der kenâr) of an incoming petition or report, often ordering that a fermân (firman) (or berât , etc.) be issued to a certain effect... (Brill, Encyclopedia of Islam). "Menzils" were early post organizations in the Ottoman Empire before the Reform period. In the Ottoman Empire, every 35 kilometers - the distance one could travel in a day - on the main roads, there were buildings called "menzil" or "menzilhane" (destination, post station). Surrounded by walls, these yards had a hostelry, barn, market, bath, and restaurant. Hosted at the complex for free, travelers shopped, took baths and fed their animals, and continued their journeys the following day. At the complex, officials - registered and paid by the state - served the guests. Within time, menzils turned into bazaars where locals sold their products. Then, villages and towns started to pop up around them. Commodities needed by the army for expeditions were preserved at menzils and soldiers were accommodated at these facilities if needed during expeditions. Mailmen operating between two faraway destinations changed their horses with those waiting at menzils and went on their route without losing time. (Source: Ekrem Bugra Ekinci). It's written on paper with 'ahar'. Used black ink only. It includes approx. 63 lines on front and verso of the paper and two buyuruldus. Different calligraphic "riq'a" styles by different bureaucrats and Grand Vizier and owner of a petition (Bende, Osman). Grand vizier's handwriting is in 'diwanî' script. An extremely rare autograph manuscript is a good example of the Ottoman state organization in the early 19th century.

Then he uses an interesting style by writing "It is not our duty to thank Rechid Safvet Bey, on behalf of those supporting us here, and to have defended the Turkish Cause with this documentation which follows...". He goes on as 'So much the news published in the Italian, French, English and German newspapers about our country is translated' and 'Also, having made a nine conference on the event that took place in Germany'... In Darülfünün, later renamed to Istanbul University, he was appointed professor of Islamic art. During the Turkish Republic era, he was elected to the parliament, and also served as a government minister. He married to Ayse Saide, who, according to some sources, was a descendant of two former Anatolian beys (Isfendiyarids and Ramazanids). During his childhood, his father's mansion was a meeting point of famous poets, and he was influenced by the poet community during his early years. He published his first poems in a literary newspaper published by his uncle in Paris, France. He began writing in Genç Kalemler (literally: "The Young Pens"), a literary periodical. He also distinguished himself as an orator. He took part in a committee, which was tasked to reflect the ordeal of the Turkish population in the Balkans after the Balkan Wars (1912-1913). Then, he served as the Minister of Education from 13 December 1920 to 20 November 1921 in the 1st, 2nd, and the 3rd cabinet of the Executive Ministers of Turkey. After the proclamation of the Republic, he served again as the Minister of National Education in the 4th government of Turkey between 3 March 1925 and 21 December 1925. In 1931, he was appointed Ambassador of Turkey to Romania in Bucharest. In 1943, he entered the parliament from the Republican People's Party. In 1950, he joined the newly founded Democrat Party. Several years later, however, following the struggle for the "Right to Prove" in the press, he co-founded the Liberty Party. He lost his seat when his political party was defeated in the 1957 general election. Resit Saffet [Safvet as well] Atabinen, (1884-1965), Turkish historian, diplomat, and member of parliament.

GAZI EVRENOS WAQFS.
[MANUSCRIPT OTTOMAN HISTORICAL DOCUMENT - WAQF - OTTOMAN BALKANS] Gazi Evrenos Bey Vakfiyeleri mülhâkâtinda bulunan evkâf-i serîf musakkafât ve müstalâta mahsûs.
Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Original manuscript and print paper. 40x26 cm. In Ottoman script. 1 p. Decorated with Sultan Abdulhamid II tughra. It includes the declaration of Gazi Evrenos Waqf lands that passed from the old owners to the new owners. Evrenos or Evrenuz (Gazi Hadji Evrenos Bey; died 17 November 1417 in Yenice-i Vardar) was an Ottoman military commander, with an unlikely long-lived career and lifetime. He served as a general under Süleyman Pasha, Murad I, Bayezid I, Süleyman Çelebi and Mehmed I. A persistent Greek legend maintains that Evrenos' father was a certain Ornos, renegade Byzantine governor of Bursa who defected to the Ottomans, and then on to Karasi, after the Siege of Bursa, in 1326. As one of the most successful Ottoman commanders, Evrenos acquired a considerable amount of wealth and founded numerous endowments (awqaf). "Hâci-Gâzi Evrenos Beg, who, together with Halil Hayreddin [Çandarli] Pasha, accepted the surrender of the city of Siroz (Serez) on September 19, 1383, used the city as his home base until he moved further west to Yenice-i Vardar at the end of the century. During the years he lived in Siroz he is known to have established a pious foundation (vakif). His endowment, which included a mescid (small mosque), which was rebuilt by a descendant at the end of the 18th century as a large Friday Mosque (câmi-i serif), a theological seminary (medrese), and a soup kitchen (imâret), is no longer extant.". Antonio Zelic (Zellich) of Brela was one of many Dalmatians who left his homeland in pursuit of a better life during the 19th century. However, instead of going west, he set out toward the East, to the Ottoman imperial capital - Istanbul. Upon arrival in the city on the Bosphorus, Zelic found employment at the lithographic print house of Henri Cayol, the first of its kind in the Ottoman Empire. In 1869, Zelic opened his own lithographic print house called "Zellich and Sons" (A. Zellich et fils). His descendants continued his work with great success, and the Zellich Print House, now known as "Zellich Brothers" (Zellich frères), became one of the most renowned in the Empire. Zellich Brothers won recognition due to the high quality of their products, and, above all, the amazing beauty of their postcards and posters. Their crowning achievement was an order for the printing of the Ottoman Turkish Lira banknotes in 1914. Zellichs received many Ottoman and international awards, including medals conferred by the Pope, the Persian shah, and the Serbian king.". BURSALI KAYMAKAM MEHMED NIHAD BEY, (1886-1928).
[GREECE, THE ARCHIPELAGO, MEDITERRANEAN SHORES OF NORTH AFRICA, AND WEST ANATOLIA] [Plan of Greece showing the Second Battle of Çatalca].
Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Original b/w map. 70x57 cm. In Ottoman script. Folded. No scale info. A huge plan showing The Second Battle of Çatalca fought between 03 February 1913 and 03 April 1913 was a major "continuous skirmish" of the First Balkan War. The battle consisted of a series of thrusts and counter-thrusts by both the Ottomans and the Bulgarians. On 20 February the Ottomans, in coordination with a separate attack from Gallipoli, charged the Bulgarian positions. Although the Bulgarians repulsed the initial attack, they were weakened enough that they withdrew over fifteen kilometers to the south and twenty kilometers to the west to secondary defensive positions; but eventually the lines returned to essentially the originals. The separate siege of Edirne resulted in its loss to the Bulgarians on 26 March, sapping Ottoman morale; and with heavy Bulgarian losses to both fighting and cholera, the battle dwindled down and ceased by 3 April 1913. On 16 April a second ceasefire (armistice) was agreed to, ending the last fighting in the war. Lieutenant Colonel Mehmet Nihat Bey of Bursa who was born in 1886 accomplished to write 39 books about military history which are including his war experience and his translation works. Nihat Bey who is the first and the most important military historian in the Republic of Turkey was an intellectual person rather than a soldier. He meticulously evaluated many mistakes and points should learn about war by an objective eye in his works. Although it passed a century from the time these books had been written this great person couldn't have been totally discovered by researchers yet. The first military historian in the Republic of Turkey Mehmet Nihat Bey, participated in Tripoli, Balkan, Gallipoli, and the Turkish War of Independence. He taught in a military academy for many years and he impressed many staff officers in terms of idea. During the first years of the republic era in Turkey he lectured about military history and until the last year before he died he had given so useful pieces of information in the warfare of Çanakkale for visitors. Nihat Bey evaluated the conditions about the period of his life and the wars he participated by an objective view and he left great materials for the next generations succeeding him. He enlightened Turkish recent history by writing the events which he had witnessed. Studies of Nihat Bey have an important impact on the researchers who want to have knowledge about Balkan and Gallipoli wars which fulfilled their 100th anniversary.

[MESSRS I. CAMONDO ET CIE ON BEHALF OF [PROBABLY] MOISE DE CAMONDO, (Ottoman Empire-born French banker, art collector and philanthropist), (1860-1935)].
Autograph letter signed.
Very Good French Original autograph letter signed (ALS) by P.pon "[We hereby declare that Ms. L. Cassinelli occupied our house located in Pera Rue, Hodja Ali No 19. On December 1, 1887, and left him on September 30, 1899. That during all time, he did not pay me the tax... P. pon de la succession de feu le Comte A. de Camondo. [i.e. On behalf of the succession of Count A[braham Salomon] Camondo, (1781-1873)]. Probably it's signed by his advocate of Moise de Camondo. Recipient is not defined. Letter indicates one of Camondo family's houses in Pera, Constantinople. 26,5x21 cm. Completely in French. 14 lines. On a paper watermarked "William Brown & Co., London". William Brown and Co. were located in London in this 'St. Mary Axe, and 40 to 41, Old Broad Street, London, E.C.' address according to Grace's guide to British industrial industry; they worked on 'Lithographic and Letterpress Printers'. 1887 Registered as a Limited Company. Count Moïse de Camondo, (1860-1935), was an Ottoman Empire-born French banker and art collector. He was a member of the prominent Camondo family. As a child, Camondo moved with his family from their home in Constantinople, Ottoman Empire, to Paris around 1869, where he grew up and continued the career of his father, Nissim de Camondo (1830-1889), as a banker. He was born into a Sephardic Jewish family that owned one of the largest banks in the Ottoman Empire, established in France since 1869. Starting in 1911, he completely rebuilt the family's Parisian mansion on the Parc Monceau in order to house his collection of 18th-century French furniture and artwork. Working closely with the architect René Sergent, he created a palatial home conforming to certain 18th-century traditions, even planning the room dimensions to match exactly the objects in his collection. The entryway is inspired by the Petit Trianon of Versailles. The home includes a kosher kitchen with separate sections for meat and dairy. The dining room includes a beautifully-carved green marble fountain in the shape of a shell, with a dolphin spigot for the ritual washing of hands before eating a meal. Some highlights of his collection include a French silver service that had been ordered by Russian Empress Catherine the Great, a set of Buffon porcelain (with exact reproductions of ornithological drawings) from the Sèvres manufacturer, and perhaps the only existing complete set of Gobelin royal tapestry sketches. He married Irène Cahen d'Anvers, daughter of Louis Cahen d'Anvers, in 1891. They separated in August 1897 after her affair with de Camondo's stable master, Count Charles Sampieri, whom she would later marry and divorce. The children, Nissim and Beatrice, remained with de Camondo. The mansion was completed in 1914, but his son did not reside there very long, as he rejoined the French Army to fight in The Great War. It had been de Camondo's great hope that his son, whom he adored, would take over the family empire. Following Nissim's death in 1917, de Camondo closed all banking activities. He largely withdrew from society and devoted himself primarily to his collection and to hosting dinners for a club of gourmets at regular intervals. Camondo died in 1935, and the museum opened the following year. He donated the home to Paris's Decorative Arts society as a museum (Musée Nissim de Camondo) in honor of the loss of his son Nissim in World War I. In addition to the collection, the meticulously-restored service areas, elevator, and woodwork of the mansion are noteworthy. During the German occupation of France during World War II, his daughter Béatrice, his son-of-law Léon Reinach, and their children (Fanny and Bertrand) were deported from France and died in the Auschwitz concentration camp. As a result, the de Camondo family died out.

YUSUF IZZEDDIN, (Ottoman prince), (1857-1916).
[IMPORTANT AUTOGRAPH LETTER BY OTTOMAN PRINCE] Autograph letter signed 'Yusuf Izzeddin' to 'Birâder Efendi' who was his brother prince of the Ottoman dynasty.
Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Original autograph letter signed (ALS) by Ottoman prince (Sehzâde) Yusuf Izzeddin to his brother, probably Mehmed Seyfeddin Efendi, (1867-1899). 27x17 cm. In Ottoman script. 1 p. 11 lines. Used a pencil. Full. Written on a "Toneywood Linen" watermarked paper. Sehzâde Yusuf Izzeddin was an Ottoman prince, the son of Sultan Abdülaziz and his first wife Dürrünev Kadin. Sehzade Yusuf Izzeddin was born on 29 September 1857 in the Dolmabahçe Palace. His father was Sultan Abdülaziz, who was then a prince, and his mother was Dürrünev Kadin, eldest daughter of Prince Mahmud Dziaps-lpa and his wife Princess Halime Çikotua. He had a full sister, Saliha Sultan, five years younger than him. He was brought up concealed in the villa of Kadir Bey, molla of Mecca, located in Eyüp. His birth was kept a secret until his father ascended the throne in 1861. Izzeddin's early education took place in the Prince's School, Dolmabahçe Palace. His tutors were Miralay Süleyman Bey, Ömer Efendi, Tophane Müfti Ömer Lutfi Efendi, Gazi Ahmed Muhtar Pasha, and Gürcü Serif Efendi. He took his French lessons from the Sultan's head doctor Marko Pasha and Sakizli Ohannes Pasha's son-in-law Sarl. In 1871, at the age of fourteen, Izzeddin was commander of the Fourth Army (Anatolian Army) with the rank of Marshal, and soon after was appointed commander of the First Army, the Imperial Army. After his accession to the throne, Prince Murad (future Sultan Murad V), became heir to the throne. However, Abdülaziz began considering changing the rule of succession in favor of Izzeddin. For this purpose, Abdülaziz set out to mollify different pressure groups and have his son gain popularity among them. During the 1867 visit to Europe, rumors spread that contrary to the rules of protocol Abdülaziz arranged Izzeddin's reception in Paris and London before the official heir, Prince Murad. Izzeddin's father, Abdülaziz was deposed by his ministers on 30 May 1876, and his nephew Murad became the Sultan. He was transferred to Feriye Palace the next day. On 4 June 1876, Abdülaziz died under mysterious circumstances. As both of Emine Sultan, Izzeddin's half-sister, parents died in the summer of 1876, when she was not yet two years old, Izzeddin raised her in his household. Izzeddin's cousin Sultan Abdul Hamid II was suspicious of him, and for this reason, had a police station built opposite his country house. Izzeddin and Prince Vahideddin (future Mehmed VI) had a rivalry with each other. Though, coldly polite to each other, they refused to share the same carriage even for the ceremonies of the state. Vahideddin especially insisted on being considered the second heir apparent. Yusuf Izzeddin suffered from his role and lived his later years in a kind of paranoia, until he committed suicide (his cause of death is still under debate: murder or suicide?) on 1 February 1916 in his villa at Zincirlikuyu, Istanbul.

Book started with an introduction by Vakkas Ali El-Buvâkî. Any biographical information could not be found about El-Buvâkî. Tractate includes thoughts of Abidin Pasha about the last Ottoman Imperial problems, degeneration in Turkish bureaucracy, international Balkan question, etc. Abidin Pasha was an Albanian patriot, politician, ideologue and diplomat; and the governor of Rhodes, Aden, Algeria, Ankara, and Adana. As a rilindas involved in the Albanian National Awakening, he was one of the founders of the League of Prizren and its chief representative for Epirus (1878). Dino was one of the main promoters in the need for the creation of the Autonomous Albanian Vilayet under the Ottoman suzerainty, and later a contributor in the Albanian independence. Abedin Dino was from Chameria and he was born in Preveza on March 23, 1843, to one of the most notable and noble families of the city (the Dino family). During the Great Eastern Crisis Dino was one of ten signatories to a memorandum addressed to Berlin Congress hosts chancellor Bismarck and Count Andrassy on 20 June 1878 calling for reforms and Albanians to remain in the Ottoman state with their rights, desires, interests, and traditions being respected. Dino strongly supported the territorial integrity of Albanian inhabited lands remaining within the Ottoman state. Together with Abdul Frashëri, Vesel Dino, and Mehmet Ali Vrioni he established local League branches of the Albanian Committee of Janina and Assembly of Preveza. On 11 January 1879, a meeting in Preveza of Albanian notables and leaders at Dino's house agreed to oppose Epirus joining Greece, even though military force if an unsatisfactory agreement was imposed by the Great Powers and to express that view to the Berlin Congress. The free movement of Dino in Preveza and his appointment as a commissioner for delineating the border was representative of the support the Ottoman Empire gave to the League during this time. From 10 June - 12 September 1880 Dino briefly served as the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Ottoman Empire for four months and was elevated to the rank of Pasha, becoming known as Abedin Pasha. Abdul Hamid II appointed Dino as he wanted to strengthen the Ottoman position during negotiations about the border with Greece. [.] In part due to his efforts and activities, the Vilayet of Janina did not join Greece and remained within the Ottoman Empire until 1912. He became a wâli (governor) of Aden and from 1904 Vizier (minister) in the Ottoman government headed by fellow Albanian Avlonyali Mehmed Ferid Pasha. Abedin Bej Dino was also an evaluated poet, publisher, writer, and translator. He wrote many songs, including the famous one "Këngë për Shqipërin" (alb. "Song for Albania", in 1879), "Të nxiturit e Shqipërisë duke përpjeturë" (1880), "Poema e Shenjtë" (Poema of Saint, 1884), "Poetry" (1888). He translated on Albanian language poems of a 13th-century Persian poet, and Sufi mystic Rumi. His son, Rasih Abidinpasazâde Dino (who has a book titled 'Üç Mektup') was a co-founder of the first Albanian school in the city of Preveza and in 1913 he was the head of the delegation of Albania that signed the Treaty of London that recognized Albania an independent state. Abidin Pasha is the grandfather of famous Turkish painter Abidin Dino, (1913-1993). Not in Özege.; Not in OCLC.

New Turkish Paperback. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 17 cm). In Turkish. 3 volumes set: (1739 p.). Mesâ'iru's-su'arâ. Inceleme - Metin. Prepared by Filiz Kiliç. 3 volumes set. Coinciding with Unesco's designation of 2007 as the 800th anniversary of Mevlana Celalettin Rumi (1207 - 1273) birth, The Dervishes of Sovereignty, The Sovereignty of Dervishes, The Mevlevi Order in Istanbul exhibition explored the Sufi history of Istanbul and commemorated Mevlana . A mystical institution of medieval Islam at the end of 13th century with respect to its social and cultural roots, the Mevlevi Order, assumes its unique place in the world due to Istanbul's close interaction with the Renaissance in Europe and embarks upon a journey that leads from Konya to Istanbul, upon Sultan Mehmed II's conquest of the latter. The Mevlevi Order in Istanbul assumes a significant political role in history, in the extent to which it shapes the cultural realm of the Ottoman world. The Order's cultural production, which ranges from music to calligraphy and from literature to architecture, is not only an intellectual and a spiritual bridge between the East and the West, but also entails a profound and elaborate philosophy that requires careful study and research.

AHMET FATIH AYDEMIR.
Economic policies in Turkish political parties after democratic transition.
New English Paperback. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 16 cm). In English. 94 p. Political parties, which are indispensable elements of democracy, normally declare in detail to the public the economic policies that they will implement through their party programmes. By looking at these programmes, electorates are informed of the economic and social policies proposed by parties and use their democratic preferences, so long as party programmes are not perceived as establishment formalities. In this study, economic policies that political parties entering the Turkish Grand National Assembly (TGNA) want to implement as their party programmes are examined during the tumultuous transition to multi-party democracy in Turkey. In general, political parties were influenced to a large extent by economic policies that were dominant in the time of the liberal period (1950-1960), the import substitution period (1960-1980), and the period of transition to a free market economy (1983-2007).

OSMAN AKGÜL.
Being immigrant in the world: Experiences, challenges and opportunities.
New English Paperback. Cr. 8vo. (20 x 14 cm). In English. 214 p. The effects of the migration on the economic, social, political and cultural life, which was taken as far back as the history of humanity, cannot be denied. Migration, which has occurred in every period of history due to natural disasters, wars, production searches etc. continues increasingly even today. Migration started to be discussed as a phenomenon in 19th and 20th century when many states tried to build their national identities and began to close their borders to "other nations". Wars fuelled by economic and political reasons trigger the migration wave in which people are displaced in masses, often resulting in tragedies. It has become the fate of almost all continents, especially in the Asia and Africa, because of the continuation of the fight and competition that the West has done within itself through the colonies or the domination. This study is trying to convey the causes, consequences, and effects of migration in the world through country experiences. Undoubtedly, every society has different causes and processes, but the results it produces are almost the same. Poverty and deprivation that inherited the generations of the immigrant masses. In particular, the migration of the masses in economic deprivation and its continuation to the target country cause social exclusion of the migrant people.

RECEP SENTÜRK, MUHAMMED SAID BILAL.
Human rights in the Ottoman Reform: Foundations, motivations and formations.
New English Paperback. Demy 8vo. (21 x 14 cm). In English. 368 p. This book argues that the late Ottoman constitutional reforms (i) were carried out as a consequence of the metamorphosis of the Empire into a modern state, (ii) were considerably in favour of the bureaucratic class, (iii) were paying regard to the expectations of the Ottoman and the Western public, and most importantly (iv) had been in conformity with Islamic jurisprudence. The constitutional reforms in the late Ottoman Empire on fundamental rights and freedoms were an idiosyncratic reflection of a trans-regional political paradigm shift. Most of the reforms were carried out in conformity with Islamic jurisprudence that had been continuously implemented in the Ottoman judicial system for centuries. The majority of the legislation was nothing but a codification of Islamic principles of jurisprudence. Yet some of them were quite new to the system, such as legislation on imprisonment and custody. Nevertheless, these new systems were adapted to Islamic jurisprudence. Moreover, the new regime of the protection of human rights brought an innovation to the judicial system concerning bureaucrats' fundamental rights. These reforms reflected a significant effort for the adjustment of the new Ottoman administrative practices to the principles of Islamic jurisprudence.

SELIM ILERI, ALI KOTAN.
Night sirens.= Gece sirenleri.
New New English Original bdg. Dust wrapper. Folio. (32 x 23 cm). In English and Turkish. 355, [3] p. Night sirens.= Gece sirenleri. Kotan'in imgeleri, tabirinden kaçan birer rüya gibi.

HASAN YASAROGLU.
Bes büyük Osmanli darbesinin hikayesi: Duraklama, gerileme ve yikilis dönemleri.
New Turkish Paperback. Demy 8vo. (21 x 14 cm). In Turkish.
