‎Very Good German Original decorated illustrated and gilt green cloth. Demy 8vo. (21,5 x 15,5 cm). In German. [xiv], 342, [7] p.,1 color engraved plate, richly illustrated (118 unnumbered b/w ills.). Höcker was a German author of historical novels for children and a stage actor. Oskar Höcker was born in a suburb of Eilenburg, in the Prussian Province of Saxony, as was his brother, author Gustav Höcker. He was educated in Chemnitz. At the age of 19 he became an apprentice actor with F.W. Porth, a well-established actor for the royal court in Dresden, Kingdom of Saxony. He performed in Bremen, Rostock, Reichenberg, Stettin, Meiningen, and from 1866 to 1882 at the court in Karlsruhe. In 1883 his career shifted to Berlin, where he played on all the big stages and was a member of the Deutsches Theater. Oscar Blumenthal referred to him as one of the company's most players, and critic Otto Brahm praised his "discrete art," comparing him to Josef Kainz. He later joined the Lessing Theater. To support his ever-increasing family (he had ten children) he began a second career as writer of children's books, and after 1870 published regularly for the well-known publisher Arnold Hirt of Leipzig. Especially in the south of Germany his books (which came to be known as Höckerle) became very popular. In many of the books he authored he attempted to educate young readers in the history of the Christian church and the cultural history of Germany. His magnum opus is a series of five cycles of historical novels, totaling 20 volumes, on the development of the German bourgeoisie, Frederick II of Prussia and the history of Prussia, the Imperial German Navy, the history of Germany since the Reformation, and the history of Christianity. He died from a nervous condition at the height of his theatrical and publishing career, in Berlin. His son, Paul Oskar Höcker, also became a writer. This book is the second book of Höcker. Ex-libris. Second Edition. First Edition in 1873.‎

‎Very Good Bulgarian Original blue cloth bdg. with embossing. Slightly stains on boards and toned on pages. Otherwise a very good copy. 12mo. (16,5 x 12 cm). In Bulgarian. 1230, [2] p. [HOLY BOOK IN BULGARIAN PRINTED IN TSARIGRAD (CONSTANTINOPLE)] Bibliia sirech sveshtenoto pisanie na Vetkhiia i Noviia zavet: Viarno i tochno prevedena ot pûrvoobraznoto. [.] In 1840 5,000 copies of the first complete translation of the New Testament were printed in Smyrna by the British and Foreign Bible Society. A second edition which was printed in Smyrna in 1850 was an almost exact reprint of the 1840 edition. A third edition followed in 1853 with 15,000 copies. The fourth edition was published in 1857 in Bucharest, and for the first time civil characters type was used. In 1859, two more editions were published. In 1866, a new "pocket" edition with text revised by Elias Riggs and Dr. Albert Long was printed in Constantinople. The New Testament was revised and reprinted a total of nine times. In the period from 1840 to 1860 the Eastern (Tarnovo) dialect was adopted as literary Bulgarian language and the Macedonian dialect, in which the New Testament had been translated, was widely rejected. By 1858 Neofit Rilski had finished large portion of the Old Testament. Riggs met with Neofit Rilski and discussed a possible revision of the Bulgarian New Testament to remove the Macedonian dialect elements. Neofit objected the revision, so Riggs took the translation and returned to Constantinople. In January 1859 Riggs invited the Bulgarian teacher Hristodul Kostovich to help him with the revision. In 1862 Long and Riggs visited the noted Bulgarian writer and poet Petko Rachov Slaveykov in Tryavna. Slaveykov agreed to help with the translation and began the work on the revising of Neofit's New Testament at once. Long joined the revision of the New Testament into the Eastern dialect in 1863 and later assisted with the translation of the Old Testament. In June 1871, after more than 12 years of revision and translation, 36,000 copies of the complete Bible translation in Bulgarian were published in Constantinople. The translation came to be known as the "Tsarigrad (Constantinople) Edition". Tsarigrad [or; Tsargrad, Tzargrad, Czargrad] Tsargrad is a Slavic name for the city or land of Constantinople, the capital of the Eastern Roman (Byzantine) Empire, and present-day Istanbul in Turkey. (23 x 16 cm). In Greek (Modern). [18], 324 p., 'prologos' by Musurus. Konstantinos Mousouros, also known as Kostaki Musurus Pasha, was an Ottoman Greek diplomatic official of the Ottoman Empire who served as ambassador to Greece, Austria, Great Britain, Belgium, and the Netherlands. He was born in 1807 in Constantinople (Istanbul) to a distinguished Phanariote family. His brother, Pavlos Mousouros, also became a diplomat. Mousouros became the first ambassador of the Ottoman Empire to the newly independent Kingdom of Greece in 1840, a position he kept until 1848. In 1847-48 he was a central figure in the events known as Mousourika (??????????), which led to his temporary recall and the breakdown of relations between the two states. On his return to Athens he survived an assassination attempt, leading to his transfer to Vienna. In 1850 he took up the post of Ottoman ambassador to the Great Britain and Ireland, which he kept for 35 consecutive years, until his retirement in 1885. During the same period, he also served as ambassador to the Netherlands (1861-77) and Belgium (1861-75). In 1876-78, he was ex officio a member of the short-lived Senate of the Ottoman Empire. Well educated, in 1883 Mousouros translated Dante's Divine Comedy into ancient Greek. He was married and had a son, Stephanos Mousouros, who later became Prince of Samos. (Wikipedia). He is known as the first translator of Dante's Divine Comedy into modern Greek. Musurus Pasha had an intellectual identity. One of the most important occupations of Musurus Pasha in the last years was the translation of Dante's Divine Comedy from Italian to Greek. Being able to translate a work of Italian classics and masterpieces of western literature should be an indication of Musurus Pasha's performance and intellectual dimension. Due to negative statements about Muhammad and Ali in Dante's work, the book was not allowed to be published within the Ottoman Imperial borders. Despite this, Musurus Pasha asked him to be permitted to publish his translation, but it was not accepted. (Source: Bir Tanzimat diplomati Kostaki Musurus Pasa, (1807-1891)., NURDAN SAFAK). Dante's Divine Comedy, originally called Comedia, and later christened Divina by Giovanni Boccaccio, is widely considered the most important poem of the Middle Ages and the greatest literary work in the Italian language. This is only 'Purgatorio' book from the set. It's signed and inscribed by Musurus Pasha with a dedication in French to Monseigneur Auguste Bonetti as "A la grandeur Monseigneur Bonetti, Hommage de veneration, Musurus". Bonetti was, in 1887, after the appointment of Monsignor Rotelli to the Vatican Ambassador to Paris, the new Constantinople patriarch appointed by Rome for him. First Greek Edition. Extremely rare.‎

Meclis-i Mebûsân (The Chamber of Deputies) of the Ottoman Empire was the lower house of the General Assembly, the Ottoman Parliament. Unlike to the upper house, the Senate, the members of the Chamber of Deputies were elected by the general Ottoman populace, although suffrage was limited to males of a certain financial standing, among other restrictions that varied over the Chamber's lifetime. The Second Constitutional Era of the Ottoman Empire began shortly after Abdul Hamid II was forced to restore the constitutional monarchy after the 1908 Young Turk Revolution. The period established many political groups and parties. Ahmet Riza became the first President of the Chamber in 1908. An amendment in 1909 to the original 1876 constitution resulted in the Chamber gaining more true political power at the expense of the non-democratically elected Senate and the Sultan. A series of elections during this period resulted in the gradual ascendance of the Committee of Union and Progress's (CUP) domination in politics. The second largest party Liberal Unionist Party (LU) (Turkish: Hürriyet ve Itilâf) was in fact a coalition of parties led by Prince Sabahaddin. ‎[EARLY TURKISH EDITION OF 'THE SEVEN BEAUTIES'] Tercüme-i hikâye-i Heft Peyker. 7 volumes set. Translated by Emin Yümnî.‎

‎Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Original cloth bdg. with traditional embossings. Foolscap 8vo. (17 x 12 cm). In Ottoman script. First Ottoman Edition. 7 volumes full set in one volumes: (112 p.; 112 p.; 111 p.; 111 p.; 111 p.; 111 p., 111 p.). Hejra: 1289 = Gregorian: 1872. Özege: 20613. Haft Paykar "The Seven Beauties" (1197) (also called Bahram-Nama). A pre-Islamic story of Persian origin, it was dedicated to the ruler of Maragha, 'Ala' Al-Din korp Arslan. It is the story of Bahram V, the Sassanid king, who is born to Yazdegerd after twenty years of childlessness and supplication to Ahura Mazda for a child. The Haft Paykar is a romanticized biography of the Sasanian Persian empire ruler Bahram Gur. His adventurous life had already been treated by Ferdowsi in the Shahnama, to which fact Nezami alludes a number of times. In general, his method is to omit those episodes that the earlier poet had treated, or to touch on them only very briefly, and to concentrate on new material. The poet starts by giving an account of the birth of Bahram Gur and his upbringing in the court of the Arab King No'man and his fabled palace Khwarnaq. Bahram whose upbringing is entrusted to Nom'man becomes a formidable huntsman. While wandering through the fabled palace, he discovers a locked room which contains a depiction of seven princesses; hence the name Haft Paykar (seven beauties). Each of these princesses is from the seven different climes (traditional Zoroastrian-Islamic division of the Earth) and he falls in love with them. His father Yazdegerd I passes away and Bahram returns to Persia to claim his throne from pretenders. After some episodes he is recognized as King and rescues the Persians from a famine. Once the country is stable, the King searches for the seven princesses and wins them as his brides. His architect is ordered to construct seven domes for each of his new brides. The architect tells him that each of the seven climes is ruled by one of the seven planets (classical planetary system of Zoroastrian-Islamic world) and advises him to assure good fortune by adorning each dome with the color that is associated with each clime and planet. Bahram is skeptical but follows the advice of the architect. The princesses take up residence in the splendid pavilions. On each visit, the king visits the princesses on successive days of the week; on Saturday the Indian princess, who is governed by Saturn and so on. The princesses names are Furak (Nurak), the daughter of the Rajah of India, as beautiful as the moon; Yaghma Naz, the daughter of the Khaqan of the Turks; Naz Pari, the daughter of the king of Khwarazm; Nasrin Nush, the daughter of the king of the Slavs; Azarbin (Azareyon), the daughter of the king of Morocco; Humay, the daughter of the Roman Caesar; and Diroste (wholesome), a beautiful Iranian princess from the House of Kay Ka'us. Each princess relates to the king a story matching the mood of her respective color. These seven beautifully constructed, highly sensuous stories occupy about half of the whole poem. While the king is busy with the seven brides, his evil minister seizes power in the realm. Bahram Gur discovers that the affairs of Persia are in disarray, the treasury is empty and the neighboring rulers are posed to invade. He clears his mind first by going hunting. After returning from hunt, he sees a suspended dog from a tree. The owner of the dog, who was shepherd, tells the story of how his faithful watchdog had betrayed his flock to a she-wolf in return for sexual favors. He starts investigating the corrupt minister and from the multitude of complaints, he selects seven who tell him the injustice they have suffered. The minister is subsequently put to death and Bahram Gur restores justice and orders the seven pleasure-domes to be converted to fire temples for the pleasure of God. Bahram then goes hunting for the last time but mysteriously disappears. As a pun on words, while trying to hunt the wild ass (gûr) he instead finds his tomb (gûr‎

Sükrü Ali Ögel was born in 1886 and In 1909, he graduated from the Military Academy as a lieutenant. He was commandant of the 25th Division of the Ottoman Army in 1915. He served on the Western Front Staff Committee in the Turkish War of Independence. On December 25, 1926, he was appointed as the National Police Service Director, where he participated in the foundation studies. "The history of Turkish military aviation dates back to 1909 when French aviators were invited to Istanbul to perform demonstrations and the Ottoman High Command began with studies in this field. On December 2 the same year, Turkish skies welcomed the first ever aircraft, when, upon the invitation of the Minister of War, Mahmut Sevket Pasha, a Belgian pilot named Baron de Catters came to Istanbul and performed an exhibition flight with his Voisin biplane. At the end of 1910, a decision was made by the Ottoman High Command to send officers to Europe to be trained as pilots; however due to the financial difficulties faced the Empire at that time, this plan had to be postponed. Only a handful of Turkish students residing in Paris attended flight schools and obtained their certificates there. Mahmut Sevket Pasha could anticipate the importance of military aviation [.] When the Ottoman Empire entered the World War, it had only seven planes and ten pilots available. As soon as the Empire found itself in war, the Russians launched an offensive in the Caucasus front and the Third Army stationed there requested aircraft that would fly reconnaissance flights. Two Bleriot planes named Edremit and Tarik bin Ziyad to be flown by Fesa Bey and Salim Bey were loaded on a transport ship, which was eventually sunk by Russians. The aircraft were lost and the pilots were taken prisoner, ending up in prisoner camps in Siberia. Responding to a request from the Ottoman High Command, a number of German pilots visited the Ottoman Air Force in 1915 and Turkish officers began to be sent to Germany for flight training. At the same time, Cpt. Erich Serno from the German Air Force was given the task of reforming the Turkish military aviation. He came with 12 planes, pilots, technicians, and he was appointed as the director of the Flight School. In those early years of the war, there were serious problems with regard to the transportation of the planes from Germany to Turkey. Germany was in war with Serbia, whereas Bulgaria and Romania remained neutral, which meant that the land routes were blocked. For this reason, aircraft were taken to Southern Hungary by train and then flown to Turkey. It was only after Serbia was defeated and Bulgaria entered the war on the side of the Central Powers that these logistics problems were solved. German contribution in terms of both aircraft and pilots pl‎

‎[ARABIC LINGUISTICS IN THE OTTOMAN EMPIRE IN THE WESTERN STYLE] Usûl-i tedris-i Arabî. Mösyö Ahn'in usûlünden muktebesdir. [i.e. Arabic teaching method].‎

‎Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) In contemporary cloth bdg. Cr. 8vo. (19 x 13 cm). In Ottoman script. 88, [1] p. Usûl-i tedris-i Arabî. Mösyö Ahn'in usûlünden muktebesdir. Translated by Ismail Hemeti b. Osman. Ismail Hâmeti is one of the teachers of Beirut Idadî School. First Edition is published in 1898 in Beyrut. The Ministry of Education of the period made some changes in the program regarding the method of teaching Arabic translation and speaking. Additionally, he wanted the change to include the program of the sixth and seventh classes of "Idadîs". In accordance with this change made by the Ministry of Education, this book was started immediately since there were no books to be taught in Arabic teaching, and it was also published after the education by the Ministry of Education, with its 422 numbered permission on August 11, 1914. The method followed in the book is in accordance with the change made by the Ministry of Education in the program. The author states that on the cover of his book he prepared his work based on the "Monsieur Ahn" [i.e. Jean Françoise Ahn] procedure. This statement shows that the authors investigate the methods that arise about language teaching and closely follow the methods which are followed in the teaching of Western languages in order to prepare books suitable for these methods. Because the author adapted the rules of the method put forward by a Western linguist to the teaching of the Arabic language and tried to prepare his book. The topics in the work are covered at a level that the reader can understand easily. The first part of the book begins with exercises on translations from Arabic to Turkish and from Turkish to Arabic. Arabic words and Turkish meanings are given across each word. As the topics progress, both the number of sample sentences and level increases gradually. In the second chapter, grammar topics are handled in the same way under the title of "Kavâid-i Esasiye". In the third part, 45 prepositions are listed first with the title "edevât". he meanings of the prepositions are given, and then each is given as an example. After prepositions, there is a section under the title of "lugat" [i.e. dictionary]. (Source: Ikinci Mesrutiyet'ten günümüze Türkiye'de Arapça ögretimi, by Hasan Soyupek). A rare book on Arabic grammar and linguistics. Second Edition. Hegira-Hijri: 1325 = Gregorian: 1909. Özege 22297 (For 1904 Edition). Çögenli 173.‎

Otherwise a very good manuscript. Written on a paper watermarked "Labor: Extra Strong Bank". It includes "How should a Mason be and act?", it gives some hints on the last Ottoman Freemasonry. The history of Freemasonry in Turkey stretches back to the 18th century under Ottoman imperial rule. The first lodge in Turkey was probably established around 1721 in Istanbul by Levantines. Although Freemasonry in Turkey can be traced into the 18th century, for much of that time it was limited to lodges under the jurisdiction of foreign grand lodges, and there was no independent Turkish Grand Lodge. This changed in 1856 when the first Turkish Grand Lodge was established. Sultan Murad V was a member of the lodge, becoming the first and only Ottoman sultan to join. This first Grand Lodge was banned in 1876 by Murad's successor Sultan Abdulhamit Han. The Grand Lodge came back in 1909 in Istanbul under a new administration. Because the Grand Lodge was used to operate in secret, it was closed again in 1922, only to be opened in the year 1925 again. In 1935 the Grand Lodge has closed again. As a result of the repeated closures, the former Grand Lodge and its members were reluctant to support Kemal Atatürk's reformist policies. (Source: Wikipedia). No information about Dr. Nami.‎

‎BEDRI RUHSELMAN, (Pioneer of Neo-Spiritualism of Turkey), (1898-1960).; ALBERT BRAUN, (Violinist).; ZÜHTÜ RIZA BEY, (Turkish musician), M. ZÜHDÜ PEKTAS.‎

‎[MANUSCRIPT CONJURATION REGISTERS OF THE FIRST ELITIST NEO-SPIRITUALIST GROUP OF TURKEY] Ispiritizma masa tecrübeleri. [i.e. Experiences of Spiritualism].‎

‎Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Original manuscript book of the registers of the conjurations sessions by the first Turkish spiritualist group. 20x15 cm. In Ottoman script (Turkish with Arabic letters). [154] p., several hand-drawn ills. Group has Bedri Ruhselman, (1898-1960), Albert Braun, (Violinist and Ruhselman's violin teacher of German origin), Hans Ianma (Violin teacher), Hasan Saadeddin Bey, (Turkish spiritualist), and Doctor Zühdü Riza Bey, (Turkish musician, Kemençe teacher, a friend of Sadeddin Arel). Dr. Bedri Ruhselman (1898-1960), the founder of NeoSpiritism and "the Experimental New Spiritism". Ruhselman's point of view and a new perspective to the concepts such as creation, spirit, afterlife, birth incarnation, and rebirth-reincarnation are pioneers in the Early Turkish Republican period. Ruhselman's empirical perspective on "afterlife", one of the most important and primary subjects of theology, has made important contributions to spiritism, out of the classical standpoint. (Source: Ruhselman and his metaphysical vision, Kestel). Albert Braun was Ruhselman's violin teacher and his friend. It's said this early spiritualist group is the pioneer and elitist of Neo-Spiritualism in Turkey. He is considered a Mission Medium, a very rare category within spiritual mediumship. By definition, every medium has a varying degree of ability to tune in to spiritual "frequencies". But not all "reception" (coming from those frequencies) convey a meaningful message (sometimes if any). While mediumship is a gift (meaning that; one either has it or not); very few mediums are actually knowledgeable in spiritual matters. They simply transfer what they capture from their sensitive channels. And once in a while, mainstream media picks on certain mediums, especially when he/she delivers sensational predictions (i.e. Edgar Cayce). Bedri Ruhselman's both interest and gift was manifested since his early childhood. He was conducting spiritual sessions when he was only 12 years old. While continuing his musical education in the Prague Conservatory, in the 1920s, he studied the pioneers of classic spiritualism like Allen Kardec, Gustave Geley, Charles Richet, Leon Denis, William Crooks and become experienced in hypnotism and spiritual sessions. He also completed his medical education and graduated as a medical doctor. In 1950 by establishing Metapsychic Investigations and Scientific Research Society, he gifted an institutional identity to Neo-Spiritualism. His true duty started in 1958 by means of spiritual sessions with a guide being from higher spiritual plans which identified itself as "The Master". Ruhselman and his carefully selected mediums received a vast amount of knowledge via these sessions during a few months. That body of knowledge has been compiled as a book, which Ruhselman never claimed any ownership (stating that it's purely a gift from the higher spiritual plan). The plan has instructed that; the book was only to be released in the future - to be identified by a certain sign. That point alone commends recognition for pure selfless devotion towards undertaken duty. If the ego was in play; one would usually do anything for fame or at least to cash on the subject. But Ruhselman completes his true duty and hands over the book for safekeeping without ever mentioning one word about the content. He passes away a few months after (1960). (Source: Indication23). ‎REFET, (Hazret-i Sehriyârindan, 19. century Ottoman / Turkish scholar) & MEHMED PASAZÂDE A. IHSAN, (19. century Ottoman / Turkish scholar).‎

‎[MANUSCRIPT NEW OTTOMAN CALENDAR and RUZNAMA] Yeni takvim-i Osmânî: Cülûs-i ma'den me'nûs-i hazret-i hilâfetpenâhî 11 Saban fî sene 1193 ve 19 Agustos sene 1292 velâdet-i bihberâ kiymet cenâb-i pâdisâhî, fî 14 Saban sene 1257.‎

‎Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Original color manuscript calendar prepared on a fine special paper with 'ahar'. 36x22,5 cm. In Ottoman script (Turkish with Arabic letters). 2 p. Several ink stains on paper, chipped on extremities. A very good manuscript. It shows astronomic situations, locations of planets and stars, and climates in 1324 [AD 1908]. It starts with high praise to Sultan Abdülhamid II with an old style of color moon & crescent icon. Sealed by Mehmed Pasazâde A. Ihsan. On the verso of paper, can be seen detailed calendar and details of 'ruzname'. Written on 'printed' down of the paper, probably it's prepared for the printing, therefore it's understood that Ihsan and Refet were thinking to print this 'taqwim'. Prepared in the year of the Second Constitutional Regime (II. Mesrutiyet) which was Abdul Hamid II's fall came as a result of the 1908 Young Turk Revolution, and the Young Turks put the 1876 Constitution back into effect. It seems, it's prepared before fall of the Sultan, and for the present to the Sultan. The Second Constitutional Period spanned from 1908 until after World War I when the Ottoman Empire was dissolved. "The starting year of the Hijrî calendar (al-taqwim al-hijri), the fundamental Islamic lunar calendar still in use among Muslims until today, is 622 CE. Its beginning corresponds to the Hijra or emigration of Prophet Muhammed and his followers from Mecca to Medina. It is based on the revolution of the moon around the Earth and consists of twelve months of 29 or 30 days: Muharram (30), Safar (29), Rabî' al-awwal (30), Rabi' al-thani (29), Jumâda al-awwal (30), Jumâda al-thani (29), Rajab (30), Sha'ban (29), Ramadhan (30), Shawwal (29), Dhul-'l-qi'da (30) and Dhul-hijja (29 or 30). The lunar year consists of 354 days, which is 11 days less than the solar year, and every 33 years it falls one year behind the Gregorian calendar. The discrepancy with the solar year, which follows the seasons, meant that Muslim countries also used the solar calendar, and some calendars drawn up by astronomers include the dates according to the European Gregorian calendar named after Pope Gregory XIII in 1582. Ottoman Turkey used both the Islamic lunar calendar and a solar calendar known as the Rumî or Roman calendar, which was based on the Julian calendar introduced since the times of Julius Caesar in 46 BC. The Roman calendar was inherited from the Byzantines and was used by the Ottomans for the taxation of agricultural revenues. The year according to the Rumî or Julian calendar began on 1 March, and the Ottomans took the starting year to be that of the Hijra. To make up for the gain of 11 days made by the solar Rumî calendar over the Islamic calendar, a leap year was deducted from the Rumî calendar every 33 years. A rûzname is a set of tables giving the first days of the months in both the Islamic and Rumî calendars, the date on which the sun enters each sign of the zodiac, and eclipses of the sun and moon. Also known as takvîm-i dâimî (perpetual calendar) or takvîm-i devr-i dâim (calendar of perpetual motion), the ruzname were permanently valid whatever the year. There is no evidence that such calendars were produced in pre-Ottoman times, and they may, therefore, be regarded as a type unique to Ottoman Turkey.". ‎B. NAFIZ, (Turkish Minister of Education).; MAHMUD RAGIB KÖSEMIHAL [GAZIMIHAL], (Turkish musicologist, writer and intellectual), (1900-1961).; [AHMED] ADNAN SAYGUN, (Composer and musician who was one of the 'Turkish Fives' Group, ethnomusicologist),‎

‎Typescript document signed 'Maarif Vekili B. Nafiz' about Mahmud Ragip Kösemihal and Adnan Saygun's Anatolian travels for the compilation of Turkish music, sent to 'Musiki Muallim Mektebi'.‎

‎Very Good Turkish Original typescript (TLS) and an important historical document signed by the Minister of Education. 25x19 cm. In Turkish (Latin letters). 1 p. Sent to "Musiki Muallim Mektebi" [i.e. The school of music teachers]. A document stating that the relevant travel planned in advance and submitted to the Ministry of National Education is deemed appropriate, but stating that the relevant ministry cannot provide financial assistance. Ahmet Adnan Saygun was a Turkish composer, musicologist, and writer on music. One of a group of composers known as the Turkish Five who pioneered western classical music in Turkey, his works show a mastery of Western musical practice, while also incorporating traditional Turkish folk songs and culture. When alluding to folk elements he tends to spotlight one note of the scale and weave a melody around it, based on a Turkish mode. His extensive output includes five symphonies, five operas, two piano concertos, concertos for violin, viola, and cello, and a wide range of chamber and choral works. The Times called him "the grand old man of Turkish music, who was to his country what Jean Sibelius is to Finland, what Manuel de Falla is to Spain, and what Béla Bartók is to Hungary". Following the operas, he was neglected in Ankara State Conservatory by its founder Paul Hindemith. He moved to Istanbul as part of the theory faculty at the Istanbul Municipal Conservatory. In 1936 Béla Bartók visited Turkey to research the native folk music. Saygun accompanied Bartók on his travels around the country, collecting and transcribing folk songs all through the Anatolia and Osmaniye (a region of Adana), Turkey. Saygun gained immense knowledge of Bartók's style of writing during this trip and learned a great deal about string quartets: they became great friends. In 1939 he was invited back to Ankara to further promote Western musical activities and practices. A year later he formed his own organization, Ses ve Tel Birligi, which showcased recitals and concerts throughout the country, further developing public knowledge of Western classical music. Gazimihal was a Turkish musicologist, researcher, historian, and writer. He, who died in 1961, was also the uncle of famous pianist Idil Biret.‎
