DANTE ALIGHIERI, (1265-1321).; (KOSTAKI MUSURUS PASHA [KONSTANTINOS MOUSOURUS], (Translator and Ottoman diplomat), (1807-1891).
[FIRST GREEK EDITION of DANTE'S PARADISE] [Dante's Paradiso - La Divina Commedia] Paradeisos. Metaphrasis Konstantinou Mousourou, (1807-1891) [SIGNED by MUSURUS PASHA to CONSTANTINOPLE PATRIARCH AUGUSTE BONETTI].
Very Good Greek, Modern (post 1453) Original decorative cloth bdg. with Dante's portrait gilt on front board and spine. Black cloth with red decorative borders. Gilt on spine with Greek letters 'Dantou o Paradeisos [.] Metaphrasis Konstantinou Mousourou', and gilt publisher's name in English on lower. A small etiquette on lower spine. Some little wormholes on cloth and several pages. Pages are partly opened, uncut and untrimmed. Slightly faded on cloth's board. A stamp on first page. Otherwise a very good copy. Roy. 8vo. (23 x 16 cm). In Greek (Modern). [xiv], 334 p. 14 p. 'prologos' by Musurus. Konstantinos Mousouros, also known as Kostaki Musurus Pasha, was an Ottoman Greek diplomatic official of the Ottoman Empire who served as ambassador to Greece, Austria, Great Britain, Belgium, and the Netherlands. He was born in 1807 in Constantinople (Istanbul) to a distinguished Phanariote family. His brother, Pavlos Mousouros, also became a diplomat. Mousouros became the first ambassador of the Ottoman Empire to the newly independent Kingdom of Greece in 1840, a position he kept until 1848. In 1847-48 he was a central figure in the events known as Mousourika (??????????), which led to his temporary recall and the breakdown of relations between the two states. On his return to Athens he survived an assassination attempt, leading to his transfer to Vienna. In 1850 he took up the post of Ottoman ambassador to the Great Britain and Ireland, which he kept for 35 consecutive years, until his retirement in 1885. During the same period, he also served as ambassador to the Netherlands (1861-77) and Belgium (1861-75). In 1876-78, he was ex officio a member of the short-lived Senate of the Ottoman Empire. Well educated, in 1883 Mousouros translated Dante's Divine Comedy into ancient Greek. He was married and had a son, Stephanos Mousouros, who later became Prince of Samos. (Wikipedia). He is known as the first translator of Dante's Divine Comedy into modern Greek. Musurus Pasha had an intellectual identity. One of the most important occupations of Musurus Pasha in the last years was the translation of Dante's Divine Comedy from Italian to Greek. Being able to translate a work of Italian classics and masterpieces of western literature should be an indication of Musurus Pasha's performance and intellectual dimension. Due to negative statements about Muhammad and Ali in Dante's work, the book was not allowed to be published within the Ottoman Imperial borders. Despite this, Musurus Pasha asked him to be permitted to publish his translation, but it was not accepted. (Source: Bir Tanzimat diplomati Kostaki Musurus Pasa, (1807-1891)., NURDAN SAFAK). Dante's Divine Comedy, originally called Comedia, and later christened Divina by Giovanni Boccaccio, is widely considered the most important poem of the Middle Ages and the greatest literary work in the Italian language. This is only 'Paradiso' book from the set. It's signed and inscribed by Musurus Pasha with a dedication in French to Monseigneur Auguste Bonetti as "A la grandeur Monseigneur Bonetti, Hommage de veneration, Musurus". Bonetti was, in 1887, after the appointment of Monsignor Rotelli to the Vatican Ambassador to Paris, the new Constantinople patriarch appointed by Rome for him. First Greek Edition. Extremely rare.

LEO TAXIL, [Marie Joseph Gabriel Antoine Jogand-Pagès], (1854-1907).
[FIRST APPEARENCE in GREEK of TAXIL'S FAMOUS WORK on FREEMASONRY] Ta mysteria ton phrammasonon. Metaphrasis Vevelou.
Very Good Greek, Modern (post 1453) Contemporary fine leather bdg. Demy 8vo. (22 x 15 cm). In Greek. 1118 p., richly illustrated (b/w ills.). Period bindery label of E. Watson in London. Ex-library copy on fourth blank page. Otherwise a very good copy. First and extremely rare translation into Greek of Taxil's 'Myste`res de la Franc-Mac?onnerie'. Mysteries of Freemasonry. Marie Joseph Gabriel Antoine Jogand-Pagès, better known by the pen name Léo Taxil was a French writer and journalist who became known for his strong anti-Catholic and anti-clerical views. He is also known for the Taxil hoax, a spurious expose of Freemasonry and the Roman Catholic Church's opposition to it. Marie Joseph Gabriel Antoine Jogand-Pagès was born in Marseille, and at the age of five, he was placed into a Jesuit seminary. After spending his childhood years in the seminary, he became disillusioned with the Catholic faith and began to see the religious ideology as socially harmful. Taxil first became known for writing anti-Clerical or anti-Catholic books, notably "La Bible amusante" (The Amusing Bible) and "La Vie de Jesus" (The Life of Jesus), in which Taxil satirically pointed out inconsistencies, errors, and false beliefs presented in these religious works. In his other books Les Debauches d'un confesseur (with Karl Milo), Les Pornographes sacrés: la confession et les confesseurs, and Les Maîtresses du Pape, Taxil portrays leaders of the Catholic Church as hedonistic creatures exploring their fetishes in the manner of the Marquis de Sade. In 1879, he was tried at the Seine Assizes for writing a pamphlet A Bas la Calotte ("Down with the Cloth"), which was accused of insulting a religion recognized by the state, but he was acquitted. In 1885, he professed conversion to Catholicism, was solemnly received into the church, and renounced his earlier works. In the 1890s, he wrote a series of pamphlets and books denouncing Freemasonry, charging their lodges with worshiping the devil and alleging that Diana Vaughan had written for him her confessions of the Satanic "Palladist" cult. The book had great sales among Catholics, although Diana Vaughan never appeared in public. In 1892, Taxil also began to publish a paper, La France chrétienne anti-maçonnique (Christian Antimasonic France), with his staunch anti-Masonic publishing friend, Abel Clarin de la Rive. In 1887, he had an audience with Pope Leo XIII, who rebuked the bishop of Charleston for denouncing the anti-Masonic confessions as a fraud and, in 1896, sent his blessing to an anti-Masonic Congress of Trent. Doubts about Vaughan's veracity and even her existence began to grow, and finally, Taxil promised to produce her at a lecture to be delivered by him on 19 April 1897. To the amazement of the audience (which included a number of priests), he announced that Diana was one of a series of hoaxes. He had begun, he said, by persuading the commandant of Marseille that the harbor was infested with sharks, and a ship was sent to destroy them. Next, he invented an underwater city in Lake Geneva, drawing tourists and archaeologists to the spot. He thanked the bishops and Catholic newspapers for facilitating his crowning hoax, namely his conversion, which had exposed the anti-Masonic fanaticism of many Catholics. Diana Vaughan was revealed to be a simple typist in his employ, who laughingly allowed her name to be used by him.The audience received these revelations with indignation and contempt. Afterwards, Taxil left the hall, where policemen escorted him to a neighboring café. He then moved away from Paris. He died in Sceaux in 1907. First Greek Edition. Rare. Only one copy in OCLC: 758917323.

COLMAR FREIHERR von der GOLTZ, (1843-1916).
[GOLTZ'S REFERENCE BOOK on 'THE BATTLES OF FORTRESSES' PRINTED for the OTTOMAN ARMY] Muharebât-i kila'. Translated by Farukî Sâmi [Pasha], (1861-1911).
Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Original cloth bdg. with 'Tercüman Gazetesi Kitapligi' [i.e. Tercüman Newspaper Library] label on spine. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 16 cm). In Ottoman script. [8], 391 p., 5 numerous folded plates and plans. Some underlined sentences and notes by pencil. Goltz's reference book on "battles of fortresses" printed for the Ottoman military schools. Muharebât-i kila'. Translated by Farukî Sâmi [Pasha], (1861-1911). Wilhelm Leopold Colmar Freiherr von der Goltz, also known as Goltz Pasha, was a Prussian Field Marshal and military writer. After defeat in the Russo-Turkish War (1877-1878), Sultan Hamid, Sultan of the Ottoman Empire, asked for German aid in reorganizing the Ottoman Army, so that they would be able to resist the advance of the Russian Empire. Baron von der Goltz was sent. He spent twelve years on this work which provided the material for several of his books. During his time in the Ottoman Empire, Goltz had very negative view of Abdul Hamid II, writing: "The Stambul Efendi, whose father held a well-paid sinecure, reward by Sultan Hamid for his faithfulness, and who enjoyed to the fullest the good life, now knowing the struggle for existence, could not be a great leader on the battlefield. As long as Sultan Abdulhamid and the present ruling classes remain at the rudder, one may not speak of the rescue of Turkey.". Goltz achieved some reforms such as lengthening the period of study at military schools and adding new curricula for staff courses at the War College. From 1883 to 1895, Goltz trained the so-called "Goltz generation" of Ottoman officers, many of whom would go to play prominent roles in Ottoman military and political life. Goltz, who learned to speak fluent Turkish, was a much admired teacher, regarded as a "father figure" by the cadets, who saw him as "an inspiration.". Attending his lectures, in which he sought to indoctrinate his students with his "nation in arms" philosophy, was seen as "a matter of pride and joy" by his pupils. As a result, it was the Ottoman army rather the German army which first embraced Goltz's "nation in arms" theory as the basis of its understanding of war. After some years he was given the title Pasha (a signal honor for a non-Muslim) and in 1895, just before he returned to Germany, he was named Mushir (field-marshal). His improvements to the Ottoman army were significant. It is noteworthy that in the Greco-Turkish War (1897), the Turkish army stopped just before Thermopylae, only when the Czar Nicholas II of Russia threatened the Ottoman Sultan that he would be attacking the Ottoman Empire from eastern Anatolia unless the Ottoman Army stopped their campaign at that point. On his return to Germany in 1895 Goltz became a lieutenant-general and commander of the 5th Division, and in 1898, head of the Engineer and Pioneer Corps and Inspector-General of Fortifications. In 1900 he was made General of Infantry and in 1902 commander of the I. Army Corps. After returning to Germany in 1895, Goltz was in close contact with his students, and offered them his advice. [.] Soon afterward Goltz gave up that position and became a military aide to the essentially powerless Sultan Mehmed V. Baron von der Goltz did not get along with the head of the German mission to Turkey, [.] Sami Pasha al-Faruqi, (1861-1911), was an Ottoman / Turkish soldier, bureaucrat and governor. The Ottoman governor who played an important role in suppressing the Karak Uprising, which was an uprising against Ottoman authority in the Transjordanian town of Al-Karak, which erupted on 4 December 1910. The revolt came after Sami Pasha, the governor of Damascus, wanted to apply the same measures of conscription, taxation, and disarmament to the inhabitants of Al-Karak that previously provoked the Hauran Druze Rebellion. Mûcîdi (Composed by) GUISEPPE DONIZETTI [PACHA], (1788-1856).
[FATHER of the MODERN MUSIC and MUSIKA-YI HUMÂYÛN / FIRST ANTHEM of the OTTOMAN EMPIRE in the WESTERN STYLE] [SHEET MUSIC] Marche Imperiale Ottomane.= Devlet-i Âliyye-i Osmaniyye marsi. Arrangee pour piano par G[iovanni] Avolio, (1849-1936).
Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Paperback. Folio. (33 x24cm). In Ottoman script and French. [3], [1] p. Ottoman stamped in period. The Ottoman Empire used anthems since its foundation in the late 13th century, but did not use a specific imperial or national anthem until the 19th century. During the reign of Mahmud II, when the military and imperial band were re-organized along Western lines, Giuseppe Donizetti was invited to head the process. Donizetti Pasha, as he was known in the Ottoman Empire, composed the first Western-style imperial anthem, the Mahmudiye Marsi. Like in many other monarchies of its time, the anthem of the Ottoman Empire was an imperial anthem, not a national one. Hence it paid homage to a specific ruler and a new anthem was composed at each imperial succession. However, in 1844, with the Tanzimat reforms, the Mecidiye Marsi was recognized as the first official Ottoman national anthem. The first official Ottoman national flag (which was in essence identical to the present-day Turkish flag) was also adopted in 1844. Giuseppe Donizetti was an Italian musician. From 1828 he was Instructor General of the Imperial Ottoman Music at the court of Sultan Mahmud II (1808-39). His younger brother was the famous opera composer Gaetano Donizetti. He studied music first with his uncle, Carini Donizetti, and, later, he was a pupil of Simone Mayr. After enlisting in Napoleon's army (1808), he served there as band leader. He took part in the campaigns against Austria and in Spain, and followed Napoleon to Elba. He was present at the Battle of Waterloo. After the fall of Napoleon, he continued his career as a bandmaster in the Savoy army. Giuseppe Donizetti Pasha, as he was called in the Ottoman Empire, played a significant role in the introduction of European music to the Ottoman military. Apart from overseeing the training of the European-style military bands of Mahmud's modern army, he taught music at the palace to the members of the Ottoman royal family, the princes and the ladies of the harem, is believed to have composed the first national anthem of the Ottoman Empire, supported the annual Italian opera season in Pera, organised concerts and operatic performances at court, and played host to a number of eminent virtuosi who visited Istanbul at the time, such as Franz Liszt, Parish Alvars and Leopold de Meyer. Although the elder Donizetti was born in Bergamo, Italy, Constantinople became a second home for him, and he lived there until his death in 1856. He is buried in the vaults of the St. Esprit Cathedral, near the Beyoglu district of Istanbul, in Pera. Giovanni Avolio, (1849-1936) was an Italian conductor and composer. According to the sheet musical paper, this first anthem was composed in 1831 by Donizetti and arranged by Avolio into piano in 1918. J. D. Andria is one of the best known music publishers among the Ottoman Empire mionrities. According to he documents in hand, it can be estimated that he began musical score publication in the year of 1904. [SHEET MUSIC] Ire Valse pour piano, Op. 83 par.
Very Good French Paperback. Folio. (34 x 25 cm). In French. 15 p. 7 p. Stains on pages and cover. [SHEET MUSIC] Ire Valse pour piano Op. 83 par. Marie-Auguste Massacrié-Durand was a French music publisher, organist, and composer. Durand was born in Paris and studied at the Paris Conservatoire with François Benoist. He started as an organist in 1849 in Saint-Ambroise, then at St. Genevieve, St. Roch and St. Vincent de Paul (1862-74). Together with Louis Schoenewerk and other sponsors, Durand founded the company Durand-Schoenewerk & Cie. in December 1869 and acquired the important catalogue of the Paris music publisher Gustave Flaxland (1821-1895), which had grown from approximately 1,200 titles in 1847 to 1,400 titles in 1869. This included the French rights to the early Wagner operas. Following a dispute, the company dissolved on 18 March 1885 and was sold at auction in May 1896. Auguste Durand and Louis Schoenewerk bought the firm in its entirety, and they reconstituted the company with Durand's son Jacques (1865-1928). In November 1891, Jacques replaced Schoenewerk and the name changed to A. Durand & fils. Jacques assumed control of the company in 1909 when his father died, and brought in his cousin Gaston Choisnel (d. 1921) as a partner. Durand became an expert in the publication of works by French composers including Victorin de Joncières, Edouard Lalo, Jules Massenet, Claude Debussy, Camille Saint-Saëns, Maurice Ravel, Albert Roussel and Paul Dukas. JAMES STOCKER.
Krisdosçin siyreti [BOOK in TURKISH WITH ARMENIAN LETTERS].
Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Original decorative black cloth bdg. 12mo. (17,5 x 11,5 cm). In Turkish with Armenian letters. 206 p. "Armenian letters used by Ottoman Armenians and Gregorian Kipchaks have differences in terms of spelling and writing style. Also in terms of word existence, borrowed words from the Slavic language in Gregorian Kipchak Turkish are more. Arabic and Persian words, on the other hand, are partly seen in some works. However, Armenian words are very limited. It is seen that a differentiating language according to the region and quality of the work is used in the works by Armenians under Ottoman rule. In such works, there are Arabic and Persian words along with the Anatolian accents. Writing Turkish texts with Armenian letters is come across in manuscripts after the 14th century and in pressed works after the 18th century. Armenian books started to be pressed in printing houses after the beginning of the 16th century. The first Turkish book with Armenian letters was pressed in Venice in 1876 by Sivasli Mikhitar, the founder of the Union of Mikhitarists. The number of the pressed books is quite a lot. Works written in Armenian Turkish and letters in Ottoman lands are generally categorized into five groups. These are the works of Armenian poet-singers (asug), written literary works, translations, newspapers, journals, and epitaphs. It is possible to classify this classification with a more general approach by also including Kipchak areas as such: literary works (it is possible to consider this as oral and written works), dictionaries, and works on language, translations, legal documents, historical works, and periodicals.". [BURUSALI] LÂMI'Î ÇELEBI (Mahmûd b. Osman b. Nakkas Ali b. Ilyas), (1472-1532).
Münâzara-i Sultan-i Bahar bâ Sehriyâr-i Sita.
Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) In contemporary cloth bdg. Large roy. 8vo. (25 x 17 cm). In Ottoman script. 75 p. Hegira: 1290 = Gregorian: 1873. According to Gibb, 'münazaras' were a scale for Ottoman classical poetry, but Çelebi's münazara is longer as 'mesnevis' are. This 'münazara' (= skirmish, collide) narrates the endless war of winter between spring at Uludag Mountain (with its old Byzantine name Mt. Monk) in Bursa city. This work is an allegoric poem which contains characterization of all concepts such seasons, natural events etc. Winter and Spring Kings have different armies and during this poem they fight on. Hurricane is supreme commander of winter, some flowers are soldiers of spring and full of imageries this masterpiece includes. Lami'i Çelebi named the mountain as 'Uludag' in that work firstly instead of Mt. Monk. According to Agâh Sirri Levend, Münazara was written in 1522 by Çelebi. Although Lamii has about 40 works by researchers, there are 27 works that are certain to belong to him. In the Ottoman world, he was known for his prose (mathnawi) rather than poetic works. Lamii's poem, unlike other "adaptation" is a work which was written with an original subject by him. This is First Printed Edition. Özege 14810. Extremely rare. One of the gems of Turkish literature.

MUSTAFA HALIM [ÖZYAZICI], (Ottoman / Turkish calligrapher), (1898-1964).
Halim Özyazici Mesk (Tipki Basim Eserler Serisi - 1). [REPRINT EDITION]. Prep. by Murat Kiliç.
As New Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Original decorative brown bdg. with embossing. Large demy8vo. (22 x 16 cm). Introduction in Modern Turkish; facsimile plates in original Ottoman script. [40] p. Halim Özyazici Mesk (Tipki Basim Eserler Serisi - 1). [REPRINT EDITION]. Prep. by Murat Kiliç. Mustafa Halim Özyazici, was an Ottoman calligrapher and one of the last of the classical Ottoman calligraphers, using the Arabic script. He was a versatile calligrapher with a high level of expertise in many styles of script, but was widely regarded as a master jeli-thuluth. He is most noted for his work on various restoration projects, of both manuscripts and public buildings. He was born Mustafa Abdülhalim on 14 January, 1898 in the Hazeki district of Istanbul. He was the son of Nalinci Haci Cemâl Efendi, originally from Crimea and his mother was Sudanese. He was educated at Gülsen Junior High School, where he was given lessons in calligraphy by Hamid Aytaç, who recognised his talent and encouraged him to pursue calligraphy as a career. He later studied drawing and sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts in Istanbul. His formal calligraphy studies were with Hasan Riza Effendi (1849-1920) and Kamil Akdik (1862-1941) where he mastered the thuluth, nasih and riqâ scripts. In 1916, he was drafted into the Army. After completing basic training he worked in the Military Printing Department and also worked in Evkâf-i Islâmiyye Printing Press. Following his discharge from the Army in 1924, he opened an office in Bâbiâli Street (The Sublime Porte) where he prepared all types of calligraphy; business cards, seals and book covers. He also taught in various schools around the Cagaloglu district of Istanbul. From 1927, he was employed in the Imperial Chancery. When the Latin alphabet replaced Arabic lettering in 1928, he applied to go to Egypt, where classical calligraphy, using Arabic script, was still valued, but his application was rejected in 1929. He subsequently abandoned calligraphy altogether. However, during the 1940s, his skills in classical calligraphy found an outlet when he became part of a major restoration project which worked on repairs to numerous manuscripts in a variety of styles and the restoration of calligraphic reliefs and monumental art in historic, public buildings, including many mosques. In 1948, he was appointed to the position of 'old writing teacher' at the Academy of Fine Arts in Istanbul; a position he retained until his retirement in 1963. One of his responsibilities was to write the diplomas for those who were about to graduate from the Academy. He died on 30 September, 1964, ten days after being involved in a traffic accident. He was buried in the Kozlu Cemetery. Although he developed expertise in many different types of script, he was regarded as a master of jeli-thuluth script. He wrote a number of exercise books for students to practice scripts in nesih, thuluth-nesih, riq'a, diwânî and jeli diwânî, and which were part of a program designed to promote the art of calligraphy. These books are still being printed and distributed to students of calligraphy.

Tarihin merkezine seyahat: Fotograf ve Osmanli köklerinin yeniden kesfi (1886): Ömer M. Koç Koleksiyonu.
New Turkish Paperback. 4to. (30 x 24 cm). Edition in Turkish. 176 p., b/w and color ills. The Turkish volume of the exhibition. In conjunction with the exhibition, the book examines the locations where the Ottoman Empire was founded, and the meanings attributed to these in the past and in the nineteenth century. It includes articles by expert researchers and academicians, Selim Deringil, T.G. Otte, Sinan Kuneralp, Ahmet Ersoy (co-curator), Deniz Türker (co-curator), Beatrice St. Laurent, Resat Kasaba, and Berin Gölönü. In the articles, they study the foundation myths, the relationship among history, memory and representation through nomads of Anatolia, monuments, and architectural works in the earliest settlements of the empire as well as late 19th century European-Ottoman diplomatic relations. In addition, many of the photographs and artifacts from the exhibition can be found as high-quality reproductions in an addendum in the book. Ottoman Arcadia focuses on three volumes of photography albums commissioned by Sultan Abdulhamid II via an official expedition in 1886, which were gifted to the German chancellor Otto von Bismarck. The original photographs bearing handwritten informative captions in Ottoman Turkish and French on them will be on display for the first time alongside with the documents, images, and publications from various collections. The album photographs document dramatic landscapes, towns, monuments of the early Ottoman settlements like Yenisehir, Sogut, Bozuyuk; and the first capital of the empire, Bursa. The native inhabitants of the region ¿particularly the last remaining members of the semi-nomadic Turkmen tribes (yörüks) are also recorded in the albums. Through the strong, persuasive capacity of photography, the exhibition reassert foundational myths and authenticate the remote tribal origins of the ottoman dynasty. Following the documentary traces of the 1886 Expedition, Ottoman Arcadia investigates the ways in which the layered deposit of memories attached to the land of Ottoman origins was reclaimed through the agency of photography.

NILÜFER RÜZGAR.
Leadership traits of the emperors of Ottoman ascension period: Great mantheory.
New English Paperback. Demy 8vo. (22 x 14 cm). In English. [vii], [1], 107 p., b/w ills. According to the "Great Man Theory", leaders are born with a set of specific skills and traits that makes an individual destined for a leadership position. Also known as a trait perspective to leadership, it suggests that certain individuals have special innate or inborn characteristics or qualities that differentiates them from non-leaders. Specifically, these characteristics were believed to include height, weight, appearance, intelligence, disposition and others. Furthermore, charismatic and inspirational leaders instil faith in a better future for the followers in terms of their self-expression, self-evaluation, and self-consistency. The history of Ottomans is complicated and complex in terms of its emperors from the beginning to the end, in addition to severe relations with Europe and Asia. In this sense, especially the ascension period constitutes great importance; because of the fact that the six emperors of the period turned the Ottoman State into an "Empire" with their individual traits and acts. Therefore, it is worth to consider them as "great men" and evaluate them in this frame in order to construe the claim. It is expected that this book sheds light to the future researches in terms of evaluating both the emperors of Ottoman Empire and the other World emperors in terms of great man theory.
