This is one of the first guidebooks for the general public to deal with the Byzantine and Turkish archaeology of an ancient town. Following 50 years of excavation by the Italian Archaeological Mission in close collaboration with the Turkish authorities, it is now possible to describe and illustrate the post-classical remains of Hierapolis of Phrygia. The book first explores a number of themes, from the changing environment to religion and agriculture, as well as discussing objects that illustrate day to day life in the medieval town. An itinerary then guides the visitor to the site with detailed information on things to be seen, from the monumental remains of the cathedral, the shrine of St. Philip and the castle, to more humble tenth century Byzantine houses and the remains of early Turkish farms on the hills above the town. The book concludes with a glossary and a select bibliography.‎

‎KEMAL H. KARPAT.‎

‎Elites and religion from Ottoman Empire to Turkish Republic.‎

‎Fine English Paperback. Demy 8vo. (21 x 14 cm). In English. 282 p. "Professor Karpat, one of the most prominent names in the field of Political History, explores the social structure of Ottoman Empire through different eras and looks at Turkey's multi-party democracy culture from a historical perspective. His articles interpret the Ottoman history for broader audience and lay a vivid picture of events of recent history in front of our eyes. Professor Karpat's remarkable articles take us back to 18th century Ottoman days and examine change and modernization on those days, his work also looks into the independence and interaction of various social groups within a muslim state. The Ottoman social structure produced a unique way of practicing "secularism" where spiritual issues regarding faith and administrative issues regarding everyday state politics were kept completely independent from each other; one was dealing with earthly matters of day to day life of subjects of the Ottoman sultan, the other was to aid the followers of specific faith in their practice of religion and to prepare for after-life. Ottomans, despite having a highly complex social structure accommodating a number of ethnic groups and various religious orders, had successfully sustained freedom of faith by adopting the 'millet' system. Every non-muslim community represented by its leader was regarded as a 'millet' and enjoyed an absolute autonomy and freedom within its own faith and community in terms of practice of religion, language, social relations. During the Tanzimat era a new generation of religious leaders; who were relatively free from state regulations emerged among Ulema and unlike their predecessors they were not dignitaries. The social status of this newly emerging group from within well- established Ulema which was preoccupied at times to legitimise social and political change from an Islamic perspective or at other times tried to maintain status-quo siding with government, overlapped with the social image of the Ottoman middle-class. The fact that the new generation Ulema had common characteristics with ordinary middle-class people had a profound impact on Ottoman-Turkish political history. Consequently, the road map of 'modernity and secularism' set in Republican Turkey was identified by both the state represented by military and civilian bureaucrats and by people represented by local notables.".‎

‎Continuity and change: New approaches to legacy data in archaeology.= Süreklilik ve degisim: Miras veriye yeni yaklasimlar. Sempozyum bildirileri: Ankara, 29 Nisan 2016.‎

‎New English Paperback. 4to. (28 x 20 cm). In English and Turkish. [xiv], 137 p., color and b/w ills. Continuity and change: New approaches to legacy data in archaeology.= Süreklilik ve degisim: Miras veriye yeni yaklasimlar. Sempozyum bildirileri: Ankara, 29 Nisan 2016. Research on regional studies in archaeology has accelerated in the past 20 years and changed the archaeological discourse in a fundamental way. This recent perspective influenced the archaeological perception favorably in terms of evaluating the settlements with a holistic view, assessment of central places with their rural territories that cannot be separated from each other. The idea of organizing a symposium on this subject comes from our belief in the importance of removing ourselves of the understanding resulting from handling the settlement in Anatolian archeology for a long period of time, stripped from its dynamics and our belief in the importance of presenting new researches. Our department, Settlement Archaeology Program in METU was founded in 2000 mainly for filling the gap in Anatolian archaeology with the viewpoint of interdisciplinary studies and regional studies in archaeology. Studies at regional scale are recently integrated to archaeological projects in our country, yet produced important results. The main goal of this symposium is to provide a discussion ground for young scholars who carry out archaeological studies at regional scale and share various perspectives and results yielded by regional studies in Anatolia. ‎Karia Arkhaia: La Carie, des origines a la periode pre-hekatomnide (Recontres 2013).‎

‎New English Paperback. 4to. (28 x 20 cm). Articles in French, English and German, and Turkish. 604 p., color and b/w ills. Karia Arkhaia: La Carie, des origines a la periode pre-hekatomnide. This volume brings together 27 papers presented at the 'Rencontres d'Archéologie de l'IFEA' devoted to the 'early' periods of a region of southwest Asia Minor: Caria. Several recent studies have significantly advanced Carian studies, but these have been limited to chronological fields from the Hekatomnids to the end of the Roman Empire. It has therefore seemed useful to propose around a symposium and its publication a state of knowledge for periods prior to the Hekatomnids by offering both archaeologists to present unpublished archaeological material, resulting from recent (often rescue) excavations, and historians to expose their latest reflections based on material already known but reassessed in the light of new discoveries. ‎BEHIÇ ERKIN, (Ottoman / Turkish statesman, Minister of Public Works, Diplomat), (1876-1961).‎

‎Autograph letter signed 'Anadolu Bagdad Demiryollari Müdür-i Umûmîsi Behiç'.‎

‎Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Original manuscript (handwritten) letter (ALS) signed 'Nafia Vekili Behiç' [i. e. Minister of Public Works, Behiç [Erkin]]. 23,5x14,5 cm. In Ottoman script. 1 p. Dated November 28, 1929. He wrote it when he was manager of Anatolian - Bagdad Railways. Letterhead 'Anadolu - Bagdad Demiryollari Müdür-i Umumiyesi [Anatolian - Baghdad Railways Directorate]'. Addressed to Mavridi[s] Brothers in Istanbul. Behiç Erkin was a Turkish career officer, first director (1920-1926) of the Turkish State Railways, nationalized under his auspices, statesman and diplomat of the Turkish Republic, who helped save almost 20,000 ethnic Jews in France during World War II. He was Minister of Public Works, 1926-1928, and deputy for three terms; and an ambassador. He served as Turkey's ambassador to Budapest between 1928-1939, and to Paris and Vichy between August 1939-August 1943. As Turkish ambassador in France under the German Occupation after June 1940, Erkin used the power of his office and nation's neutrality to save Jews who could document a Turkish connection, however slight, from the Holocaust. Other Turkish diplomats in France and elsewhere, were also active in this rescue effort. The consulate staff under Necdet Kent in Marseille was particularly involved.‎
