The people & places of Constantinople. Watercolours by Amadeo Count Preziosi, 1816-1882.
Fine English Paperback. Small 4to. (27 x 20 cm). In English. 54, [2] p., 53 numerous b/w plts., 46 numerous color plates. The people & places of Constantinople. Watercolours by Amadeo Count Preziosi, (1816-1882). It's prepared for the first exhibition on Count Amadeo Preziosi, (1816-1882) in Great Britain. "This is the first exhibition of the work of Amadeo Preziosi to be held in this ccountry. It does not cclaim to be definitive, but it centered on the Museum's substantial holdings and augmented by loans from collections in Great Britain. Preziosi's name is now little known except to specialists, but in the period 1840-70 he was by far the most reknowned artist in Constantinople. He was only retrieved from the critical neglect into which he had fallen in the 20th century by Rodney Searight who began to appreciate his importance while building up his unsurpassed collection of views of the Near and Middle East. Indeed, it is fitting that the exhibition honours not only Preziosi himself but also Rodney Searight, pioneer of the study of this field, whose collection the Museum is raising funds to acquire. It is hoped that the enthusiasm Preziosi's contemporaries felt foe his lively and colourful studies of a now vanished way of life will be appreciated by visitors to the exhibition". (From the Kaufmann's preface).

The analysis is placed in the context of state administration, cultural and social life, and institutional system during the period of Ottoman rule. As such, the book is much more than an architectural study; it also reflects the Ottoman administrative system applied in the provinces, the social functions of the state, and the institutional structure of society. "Architectural historians will appreciate the book most, but students of the Ottoman Caliphate and European art history will also benefit from this sound study." HÜLYA BILGI, IDIL ZANBAK VERMEERSCH.
Kütahya: Sadberk Hanim Museum Kütahya Tiles and Ceramics Collection.
New New English Original bdg. Dust wrapper. 4to. (32 x 25 cm). Edition in English. 488 p., color ills. Kütahya: Sadberk Hanim Museum Kütahya Tiles and Ceramics Collection. The KÜTAHYA: Sadberk Hanim Museum's Kütahya Tile and Ceramic Collection Exhibition will be held at Sadberk Hanim Museum and remain open from 8 March until 25 November 2018. The exhibition encompasses Kütahya ware in all its wide diversity of form and decoration, and is accompanied by a comprehensive book on the subject. Curators of the exhibition are Hülya Bilgi and Idil Zanbak Vermeersch, who have also prepared the catalogue. The Ottoman period tiles and ceramics collection is one of the most important of the Sadberk Hanim Museum collections. It consists of ware made in potteries in Iznik, Kütahya and Çanakkale, which were the three main centres of Ottoman tile and ceramic art between the 15th and early 20th centuries; enabling the development of production over this period to be clearly understood. Organised as one of the major events on Sadberk Hanim Museum's programme for 2018, the exhibition presents examples of tiles and ceramics produced in Kütahya, where pottery has been made without interruption since antiquity and which in Ottoman times became the second most important source of tiles after Iznik. Sadberk Hanim Museum's Kütahya tile and ceramic collection is here exhibited chronologically and according to stylistic features. The exhibition is a reflection of production in Kütahya between the 18th and 20th centuries, during the Ottoman period. The diversity of the exhibits means that they throw light on both the artistic and technical aspects of Kütahya tile and ceramic production; tracing changes over time in decoration, form, and quality of the paste and glaze. Ceramic finds uncovered in the course of public infrastructure works in the city of Kütahya in 1979 demonstrated that production in Kütahya continued in parallel with that of Iznik. This ancient art managed to survive in Kütahya for centuries, from early Ottoman times onwards. Kütahya's master potters and tile makers maintained a high level of creativity and while styles changed throughout the period they continued to meet the needs of ordinary people for domestic ware, while at the same time producing tiles to embellish the walls of monumental buildings. Kütahya tiles and ceramics had long since found their way into museums and private collections in the 19th century, and today are increasingly sought after by collectors.

The hidden treasure of his beauty needs the garden to become visible to those who are still bound to sensible and tangible beauty. The eye of love sees behind the roses and trees, in the shade of the slender cypress and in the modest genuflection of the little violet, in the limpid water of basins and in the gushing fountains faint remembrances of the garden of Paradise with its Tuba tree, kauthar and salsabil; a Paradise which is, in turn, only a sensual symbol of God's everlasting beauty". HASAN DEDEOGLU.
The Lydians and Sardis.
New English Original bdg. HC. 4to. (31 x 23 cm). In English. 118, [1] p., color ills. The Lydians and Sardis. In ancient literature the Lydians are frequently mentioned as one of the distinguished peoples of western Anatolia in about the middle of the first millennium BCE and they ruled, although for a relatively short period of some hundred and fifty years, from the Aegean shore to the great curve of the Halys. The scribes of the Old Testament knew and included the Lydians in the Table of the Nations. Their burial mounds which are spread on the flats of the Hermus near Sardis have been a sight of wonder for travellers since antiquity. The information supplied by ancient literature, much of which we owe to Herodotus and Xenophon and research in the first half of the last century, has been supplemented by what is being revealed by excavations in and around their capital Sardis and other regions of Lydia during the last few decades. What may be known about the Lydians by the general reader, however, may not amount to more than some stories such as that of the fabulous wealth of King Croesus which inspired tales of prosperity and gave birth to the expression ¿rich as Croesus¿ or that the Lydians were the people who invented metal coinage. The objective of this book is to present the history and culture of the Lydians as a whole without trying to give all of what is known about them. Despite its limited size, much of what the book comprises is not accessible to the general reader as a whole anywhere else.

Madduwattas.
Fine German Original cloth bdg. Roy. 8vo. (23 x 16 cm). In German and Hittite texts. [6], 178, [6] p., vi numerous b/w plates (Tafeln). Madduwattas. Madduwatta(s) was a king of Arzawa, in Anatolia, about 14th or 13th century BC. Probably, Madduwatta was first a local king of a Lukka city-state at coast of southwestern Asia Minor. He faced a struggle, in the Lukka Lands, against a "man from Ahhiya", named Attarsiya (or Atreus, in Hellenized rendering and lost his rule. Tudhaliya II, great king of Hittite Empire, gave Madduwatta asylum, and even gave him the mountainous kingdom Zippasla (i.e. Sippylos, the mountainous part of Lydia?) with the Siyanti River Land (Maeandrus river?); but, on condition that Madduwatta use it as a base to invade Arzawa. When Madduwatta did this, Kupanta-Kurunta, king of Arzawa, destroyed his army and occupied Zippasla. Once more, Tudhaliya defeated Madduwatta's enemy and restored Madduwatta to his throne. And then, Madduwatta's previous enemy Attarisiya attacked Zippasla, with 100 chariots. This time, Madduwatta did not even defend himself, but fled a third time to the Hittites. Tudhaliya sent a third army under Kisnapali (a Hittite general) to the land to drive Attarissiya out. This time, the Hittite army was ordered to stay. Madduwatta, apparently, then decided he was never again going to suffer such indignities. When Dalawa (Tlos) and Hinduwa rebelled, Madduwatta suggested that Kisnapali take Hinduwa while Madduwatta take Dalawa. But while Kisnapili was on his way to Hinduwa, Madduwatta allied with Dalawa, and with its help ambushed and killed Kisnapali. Independent once more, Madduwatta married the Arzawan king's daughter, and soon took that kingdom too. The flourishing of Madduwatta is reported as 1410 B.C. When Tudhaliya ordered Madduwatta to put down a revolt in Hapalla (or Caballa), he did - but then Madduwatta forced Hapalla, too, to switch loyalty to his own side. He then bullied Pisidia into his kingdom, even closer to the Hittite heartland. Under Tudhaliya's successor Arnuwanda I, Madduwatta even allied with his old foe Attarisiya and invaded Alashiya.
