Publisher's original blue-grey cloth decorated in a stylised maze design with the centre square in red and titles in gilt with dustwrapper designed by Dali. Illustrated with a frontispiece and 12 black and white full page plates by Dali. Preserved in a custom brown cloth clamshell box lined with attractive geometric patterned paper and with titles in gilt to the spine. A fine copy the binding square and firm with just very minor bumping to the tips of the spine. The contents remain clean and bright throughout free from any previous owners' inscriptions or stamps. Complete with the very good price-clipped dustwrapper which has toning loss to the head and foot of the spine minor loss and nicks to the extremities a two inch tear to the foot of the spine and a small repair to the reverse of the front flap. A macabre tale by the pioneering Swiss fantasy author Maurice Sandoz 1892-1958 and later the basis for a 1953 horror film of the same name. Its surrealist overtones are perfectly matched by the illustrations by Dali whom the author had met in Rome in the late 1930s.
