BUCKE, Richard Maurice [1837-1902].
Cosmic Consciousness: A Study In The Evolution Of The Human Mind.
Philadelphia: Innes & Sons 1901. First Edition Limited to 500 copies signed by the Author. A classic and influential work in the modern study of mystical experience by an important Canadian progressive psychiatrist. Bucke's theory which was partly based on his own experience involved three stages in the development of consciousness: the simple consciousness of animals the normal self-consciousness of man encompassing reason imagination etc. and cosmic consciousness the next stage of human mental development where man feels a profound mystical sense of inter-connectedness with the universe. Bucke studied medicine at Montreal and in 1877 became head of the provincial Asylum for the Insane in London Ontario a position he held for most of the remainder of his life. He believed in non-restraint social contact and normalization of routines in the institution and introduced organized activities that would now be described as occupational therapy. Bucke became a close friend and admirer of the American poet Walt Whitman whose biography he wrote and for whom he acted as a literary executor. Bib. Osleriana 4612. 4to. pp. xviii blank leaf 318. with half-title. A fine uncut copy in original cloth paper spine label slightly chipped. elala6201 Philadelphia: Innes & Sons, 1901 hardcover

COSMIC CONSCIOUSNESS: A Study in the Evolution of the Human Mind Inscribed
Innes & Sons 1901. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. First edition of 500 signed copies but this with an additional full page inscription by Bucke signed: "Asylum London Ontario 4 September 1901." Bucke died five months later so inscribed copies are scarce and this is the only one I have seen inscribed to someone involved in the book production and at the London asylum. Book is tight and free of all markings paper label on the spine chipped but perfectly readable. This is one of the truly foundational books of American mysticism and free thought.

Innes & Sons hardcover

Man's Moral Nature: An Essay
New York; Toronto: G. P. Putnam's Sons; Willing & Williamson 1879. First Edition. Hardcover. Good. xiii 200 p. 21 cm. 3 b&w plates with tissue guards. Brown cloth hardcover with blank impressing. Some soiling to boards bumped corners softened spine ends small scuff on lower spine. Front free endpaper missing. Signature of F. E. Perrin on a preliminary page.

R. M. Bucke dedicates this book to his friend American poet Walt Whitman for his "exalted moral nature." Bucke divides man's moral nature into three parts: 1 active nature by which he acts 2 intellectual nature by which he knows and 3 moral nature proper by which he feels. Moral nature Bucke believes has a physiological basis in the sympathetic nervous system pictured opposite p. 48 and intellectual nature in the cerebral spinal system pictured opposite p. 60. He concludes that an evolution in man's moral nature reflects a development of his sympathetic nervous system. The signature of F. E. Perrin at front is likely that of London Ontario resident Finley Ewart Perrin. G. P. Putnam's Sons; Willing & Williamson hardcover
