A sumptuous edition of Maurice Barrès 1862 - 1923 travel impressions of Venice which he wrote in 1903 while living in Italy. Barrès was closely associated with the French Symbolists and the Italian Decadents like Gabriele d'Annunzio. He wrote a trilogy The Cult of the Self in 1888 and shortly thereafter was elected to the Chamber of Deputies and remained very involved in nationalist politics for the rest of his life. <br /> This superb 1926 edition is masterfully illustrated by Edgar Chahine 1874 - 1947 an artist of Armenian descent who studied in Venice for several years before moving to Paris. In his etchings he captures the mood and character of the city and its inhabitants. This super-illustrated edition includes the copper plate of the portrait of Chateaubriand p. 52 inset into the front doublure with the following inscription etched at the top of the plate after printing: "Achevé d'imprimer. 1926" followed by Chahine's signature. The book incorporates beautiful typography and a unique colophon set in the shape of the bow-iron that characterises the prow of all Venetian gondolas. Après." is a striking photographic triptych depicting the transformation of a roast chicken before during and after a meal. <br /> <br /> Each matted print measures 11 1/2 x 9 1/4" captioned mount: 13 3/4 x 11 3/8"; mat: 17 1/8 x 14 3/4" with photographer's stamp at recto of mount as well as handwritten negative number and technical information. <br /> <br /> Captions in French. Silver gelatin prints mounts and mats in very good condition. About the photographer: Born in France and active from the 1930s through the 1950s Maurice George Chanu worked primarily in Paris. In 1948 he put together a photo album to illustrate the lyrics of the popular French song "La Seine" which won the Grand Prix de la Chanson Francaise in 1948. Chanu's work echoes several other photographers including Brassai's "Paris Nuit" work and Jindrich Styrsky's signage and posters but he created his own unique view of the world - no matter that it was limited primarily to Paris as was Atget's before him. Chanu's strong modernist eye captured Paris and its winding river the Seine from the sparkling light of dawn to work-a-day activities and finally the romantic evening calm. Chanu worked with a 4 x 5 camera with Dager lens often using magnesium flares to light his night shots. Chanu was also known to paint landscapes. The photographer/artist was also an inventor of optical instruments including a scope and something called an épiscope comparator which was used by police for reading fingerprints. Sein erster Text "Un homme qui vivait couché sur un banc" 1940 fand die Anerkennung von Gustave Roud zu dem C. eine langjährige Freundschaft unterhielt. Die darauf folgenden Gedichtbände thematisieren die Frau und die Natur "Les grandes journées de printemps" 1944 "Verdures de la nuit" 1945 die Suche nach der verlorenen Vergangenheit und die Gottessuche "Le Valais au gosier de grive" 1960 "Office des morts" 1966 "Evangile selon Judas" 2001. Mit Eric Genevay übersetzte er die "Idyllen" von Theokrit 1951 und die "Georgica" von Vergil 1954. Von C.s Zuneigung zum Wallis zeugt sein populärstes Buch "Portrait des Valaisans en légende et en vérité" eine Abfolge von Skizzen in denen sich Zärtlichkeit Ironie und Kritik mischen 1965. Daran knüpfte als satirische Fortsetzung "Le match Valais-Judée" an 1968. Auf Sinnsuche bereiste C. auch ferne Länder: Tibet "La tentation de l'Orient" 1970; Briefwechsel mit Jean-Marc Lovay und China den Libanon Spitzbergen die USA und Kanada "L'océan" 1993. Den Personen die sein Leben wesentlich beeinflussten widmete C. ergreifende Hommagen: "Le livre de C" 1986 "Octobre 79" 1986 "Le garçon qui croyait au paradis" 1989 "La veillée des Vikings" 1990.
