From the Children of America Maurice Sendak and Harper Collins Publishers January 20 1993". SIGNED.

Original art print on semi-stiff paper the design by Maurice Sendak and commissioned by his publishers as an official greeting to welcome the Clinton era -- it was published in major newspapers all across the USA on the actual inauguration day and may have been given to those invited to one of many inaugural parties: but exact limitation is unknown except it is quite rare and unusual.

The actual image appears to be a duotone from graphite with a red and blue single rule surround with caption below: overall measurement is 13-1/16 x 12-1/2 inches 33.2 x 31.8 cm. A small quantity was acquired directly from the artist who then signed each one in ink. It is the only political image Sendak did in his entire oeuvre. Sendak in Asia. Exhibition Catalogue
Sendak in Asia. Exhibition Catalogue.
With 43 black and white and 22 color illustrations.
Oblong 8vo 48pp; pictorial stiff paper wrappers.
Fine exhibition catalogue highlighting a myriad of works illustrated and written by this celebrated children's book writer and artist.
The exhibition began in October 1996 at Maruzen Co. Ltd. galleries in Tokyo Japan travelling in December to Kyoto and Nagoya and then to Neilson Hays Library in Bangkok Thailand in January 1997. Illustrating more than eighty books Sendak's original art is in constant demand by private collectors everywhere. Nearly all of his artwork is archived at the Rosenbach Museum and Library Philadelphia. Past loan exhibits have been presented at the Ashmolean Museum Oxford England and The Pierpont Morgan Library New York while commercial galleries have offered modest shows with work on loan from the artist. Significant drawings are rarely ever offered for sale especially his highly finished pencil studies which precisely detail both concept and development of his designs or alternate visions closely resembling his published pictures but are just a bit different. This catalogue contains Sendak's pictures original prints and posters designs presented for the first time in Asia. Many of these drawings have never been offered for public sale anywhere and are of high quality and importance covering more than thirty-five years of creativity. These works include actual preliminary studies for many of the artist's most important books including WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE IN THE NIGHT KITCHEN OUTSIDE OVER THERE his early and little-known brilliant version of THE VELVETEEN RABBIT illustrations from German fairy tales by Brentano and the Brothers Grimm pictures for theatrical costumes poster designs and record jackets plus his homage to the battle against censorship on behalf of the American Booksellers Association.
Twenty-six of the drawings in this catalogue were actually used for publication and represent the largest collection of such pictures ever offered for sale at one time. Sendak, Maurice; Kushner, Tony
BRUNDIBAR
New York: Michael di Capua Books 2003. First edition. Fine in near fine jacket. Doubly signed first printing of this illustrated retelling of the 1938 Czech opera performed in the Terezin concentration camp by its original cast of orphaned Jewish children imprisoned there alongside composer Hans Krása. Both as a picture book and an English-language stage production Kushner's adaptation of Adolf Hoffmeister's original libretto and Sendak's many-layered stage designs and illustrations offer as much darkness as an audience member or reader is ready to accept: to the very young child BRUNDIBAR is a fairy tale; to the older child a fairy tale with a deep shadow; to an adult a double text heavy with historical dread and sorrow a testament to the powers and limitations of art in the worst and bloodiest times and places. Sendak conscious all his life of the deaths that could have been his own felt profoundly connected to BRUNDIBAR from the first: "I felt the whole thing was me. This is was my story." 8.5'' x 10.75''. Original brown cloth boards. Original unclipped $19.95 color pictorial dust jacket. Illustrated in color. 56 pages. Signed by Sendak and Kushner on title page.
