KEATINGE, ESQ, MAURICE [TRANSLATOR FROM THE ORIGINAL SPANISH]
THE TRUE HISTORY OF THE CONQUEST OF MEXICO BY CAPTAIN BERNAL DIAZ DEL CASTILLO ONE OF THE CONQUERORS. WRITTEN IN THE YEAR 1568
London:: Printed For J. Wright Piccadilly By John Dean 1800. 1800. First edition in English. 4to. Translated from the original Spanish by Maurice Keatinge. Leather and boards viii 514 1 pp. frontispiece map preface. One of the most important firsthand accounts of the Spanish conquest of Mexico. Written by Bernardo Diaz del Castillo a foot soldier who served under Hernan Cortes during the expedition that led to the fall of the Aztec Empire. The book covers the expedition from Cuba to Mexico in 1519; first encounters with Indigenous peoples along the Gulf Coast; the alliance with the Tlaxcalans; the march to Tenochtitlan; meetings between Cortes and Moctezuma II; the uprising in Tenochtitlan and the retreat known as the La Noche Triste; the siege and fall of Tenochtitlan in 1521; etc. The book provides detailed descriptions of Indigenous cities markets and customs; military operations and logistics; relationships among Spanish commanders; daily life of common soldiers; the cultural shock experienced by Europeans encountering Mesoamerican civilization; etc. Encyclopedia Britannica: "Bernal Diaz del Castillo 1495 – 1584 was a Spanish soldier and author who took part in the conquest of the Aztec nation. Diaz's account is written in an unassuming colloquial style and has both historical and artistic value." A.S.W. Rosenstock 19 #193: "All the later histories of America have acknowledged their debt to Bernal Diaz and his work has been acclaimed one of the most valuable source books of the period." The author was an original member of Cortez’s expedition to conquer the Aztec nation. He was involved in the initial planning stages all the way to its culmination. One of the most important sources on the conquest of the Aztec Empire and Mexico. The original leather spine label is missing but a new leather label approximating the original has been placed inside this copy. Retains the original leather boards which exhibit perimeter wear. Internally there are repairs to the hinges with some toning of the text but remarkably free of foxing. In all a very good copy. Printed For J. Wright, Piccadilly, By John Dean, 1800. hardcover

KEATINGE, Maurice
Travels through France and Spain to Morocco

1817 MOROCCO Keatinge Voyages Arabs Moors Illustrated AFRICA Art Architecture

Maurice Keatinge was an early 19th-century Irish politician who is much better remembered for his world voyages. At the end of the 18th-century Keatinge took a journey to France and Spain as well as Northern Africa into Morocco. The descriptions of France and Spain reflect similar late 18th-century voyage reports; however it is his account of Morocco that stands out in this book. Keatinge provides curious anecdotes of the people and places in Morocco noting many of the European influences there – especially in the city of Merakish Merrakesh.

Still Keatinge's account of Morocco opened English readers to the cultures and customs in North Africa including snake handlers African poverty and beggars Moroccan gardens and sanctuaries Arabs and Moors and even lingering effects of French naval campaigns against Moroccan pirates.

The illustrations throughout this book make it highly desirable as the views of Moroccan architecture are especially impressive.

Item number: #26553

Price: $750

KEATINGE Maurice

Travels through France and Spain to Morocco

London: Printed for Henry Colburn 1817.

Details:

· Collation: 2 parts in 1

o xv 1 346; 2 274

o 31 sepia plates of 34

· Language: English

· Binding: Hardcover; tight and secure

o Brown cloth

· Size: ~11.25in X 9.75in 28.5cm x 25cm

· Very rare and desirable with auction records and price comparisons as high as $2300

Our Guarantee:

Very Fast. KEATINGE, Maurice
Travels Through France And Spain To Morocco . comprising a Narrative of the Author's Residence in that Empire. With an Account of the British Embassy to the Court of Morocco under the Late George Payne. Esq. Consul-General. To which is added a Second Journey through France in 1814.
1817. London: Henry Colburn. 1817. Two volumes in one as issued 4to. Modern half-calf over cloth boards spine with raised bands lettered in gilt; pp. xv 346; ii 274 engraved portrait-frontispiece foxed 33 plates in sepia aquatint after the author; light offsetting from plates these occasionally a little spotted otherwise a good copy of a scarce work.First issued the year before under the title Travels in Europe and Africa comprising a Journey through France Spain and Portugal to Morocco this is the re-issue of the first printing sheets under a slightly altered title. 'The portions relating to Morocco - Mogador to Merakish and up the coast to Tangier the regular route of the embassies one of which Mr. Payne's Col. Keatinge accompanied - are in vol. i. pp. 175-346 and in vol. ii. Pp. 1-54. The journey was made years previously in 1785 but though the book is diffuse it is valuable for the account it gives of Mowlai Abdalla of whom a most repulsive portrait serves as frontispiece. At the time of Keatinge's visit to Merakish there seemed to have been what is not the case now quite a little European colony there - including a Venetian who was the Sultan's mercantile agent a Prussian and two Spanish monks who had a 'hospicio' there and were engaged in the redemption of Christian captives. There was also a tiny 'Danish garden'. There were several renegades including a Frenchman and his French wife and numbers of people of consequence the descendants of old renegades who were always addressed as 'Uncles'. Among them was an Englishman Thomas Myers who bore the title of El-Kaid Boazzer. He professed to be one of the crew of the Inspector privateer wrecked in Tangier Bay in January 1745 - a statement which is confirmed by one 'Thomas Mears' appearing in the list of the twenty members of the crew who turn'd Moors' Judaisme Marocain. Maurice Bagenal St. Leger Keatinge c. 1761-1835 was a Kildare landowner soldier and politician who undertook this journey in 1784/5 whilst on half-pay and published it all those years later. hardcover
