The arrest of arsène lupin
London: Eveleigh Nash 1911. 277pp 10. Original publisher's green cloth boards lettered gilt with the pictorial onlay intact. Worn; bumped and marked with some tearing and chipping to the sunned spine where the gilt is entirely faded. Toning to endpapers and page block light foxing throughout and to edges. An early reprint of the Alexander Teixeira de Mattos translation of Arsène Lupin contre Herlock Sholmès 1909 under a new title for Eveleigh Nash. French writer Maurice Leblanc 1864-1941 is best remembered for creating the gentleman thief Arsène Lupin who was often positioned as the French Sherlock Holmes. Leblanc sated publishing these short stories in Je sais tout magazine as early as 1905 though was forced to use alternative aliases for his version of the character Sherlock Holmes having angered the original creator Arthur Conan Doyle. American translations by George Morehead used the alais Herlock Sholmes to get around the wrath of Conan Doyle whilw Teixeira de Mattos translating for the British publication chose the moniker Holmlock Shears. The first appearance of the latter was published under the title 'Arsène Lupin versus Holmlock Shears" by Mr. Grant Richards. . First Eveleigh Nash edition. 8vo. Eveleigh Nash hardcover
