Maurice Cardiff [Maurice Henry Cardiff] (1915-2006), writer and British Council officer, friend of Patrick Leigh Fermor, Peggy G
Two Autograph Letters Signed 'Maurice' from writer and British Council official Maurice Cardiff to Felicity Rhodes the first letter accompanied by a typed poem by Cardiff and the second by an Autograph Poem by him titled 'A Winter Casualty'.
The two letters both on letterheads of Stones Farm Little Haseley Oxford and dated 29 May 1995 and 4 February 1996. The poems without place or date. All items in good condition. The letters on blue paper and each in a stamped postmarked envelope addressed to 'Mrs Felicity Rhodes North Lodge 128 Banbury Road Oxford'. Letter One 29 May 1995: 2pp. 12mo. He thanks her for typing the poem which is 'only just the first part of a rather long one and doesn't really quite stand on its own - not that the whole thing comes off except for a few lines here and there.' he has 'never thought of having any Poems published' as he is 'only too aware of how sadly they limp along'. He has only shown them to 'one or two friends'. He would have liked to have been 'like the Greek Alexandrian Poet Cavaffy sic who used to carry copies of his latest poems in his pocket to distribute among his friends. But then he was a very great poet and his friends must have felt very privileged.' He has been 'very impressed' by what he has 'glimpsed' of Rhodes's own poems. Accompanied by a typescript by Rhodes of an untitled poem. 1p. 8vo. Headed in pencil: 'MAURICE CARDIFF.' It begins: 'Come to the edge and watch The sickle winged sea birds the slow Implacable onrush of incoming sea Beat on the rock bed and seawrack below.' Letter Two 4 February 1996: 2pp. 12mo. He has enjoyed reading her manuscript which is 'full of fascinating facts and all so well written and clearly presented'. If she intends it to be 'a history of the dance in relation to the theatre' he wonders why she 'begins with the Etruscans and not the Greeks who had both'. He goes on to discuss the 'frescoes at Tarquinium' and is pleased at the news that she is 'getting back to painting'. 'I hope you are enjoying the dark ages.' In a postscript he explains that he is enclosing a 'rather <feebly reminiscent> poem prompted by the recent snow.' Accompanied by an Autograph Poem by Cardiff 1p. 12mo titled 'A Winter Casualty'. 20 lines arranged in four five-line stanzas. The first stanza reads: 'The flakes are falling fast I sit by the fire and recall Such snow-falls in the past The snow-man and giant ball That for more than a month might last.' The two letters both on letterheads of Stones Farm, Little Haseley, Oxford, and dated 29 May 1995 and 4 February 1996. The poems unknown

The Istanbul Divanyolu: A Case Study in Ottoman Urbanity and Architecture
Ergon Verlag 2004. 1st Edition . Soft cover. Good. Scarce paperback 154 pages 8 plates on folded sheets perspective views maps plans numerous b&w illustrations in text NOT ex-library. A short crease to the upper outer corner of a portion of leaves else very good. Book is clean and bright with unmarked text free of inscriptions and stamps firmly bound. Spine free of vertical creases. Moderate wear on the covers. -- The book deals with the architectural space of the Divan axis not only the street now called Divan Yolu but the entire system of streets which formed the thoroughfare from the Topkapi Palace to the city walls. It was the main ceremonial route of Istanbul stage for the Sultan's stately processions for the important Pashas' daily transit but the exhibition of power and magnificence was never sublimated into an overall architectural image. They were enacted on a background of chaotic and lively daily city life. Street composition was unplanned and dominated by variety in form type and volume. Particularly in the 18th and early 19th centuries when a very interesting and unique urban scene took form secondary elements such as funerary enclosures and fountains much more than the principal functional and religious building types which were more traditional in layout and style were carriers of innovative architecture. The essays define the ideological and aesthetic character of Ottoman urban space and architecture through the analysis of this characteristic segment of the imperial city. <br/> <br/> Ergon Verlag paperback

Maurice Chauncy & Arnold Havens
Commentariolus de Vitae Ratuion et Martyrio Octodecim Cartusianorum bound with Historica Relatio Duodecim Martyrum Cartusianorum
Gualterus Manilius Ghent 1608. Unstated. Hardcover Vellum. Very Good Condition. Illustrator: Johannes Leopold. Book This small volume brings together two important Counter-Reformation works: Maurice Chauncy on the martyrdom of 18 Carthusian monks in England under Henry VIII between 1535 and 1540 and Arnold Havens on twelve Carthusians killed in the Netherlands in 1572 by soldiers of William of Orange. Both have a separate title page and one internal engraving by Johannes Leopold pp. 48 & 27.Chauncy provides what Gribbin 2012 calls “a largely accurate and moving account of the martyrdom†of the English monks who refused to take the Royal Supremacy oath recognizing Henry VIII as the head of the Church. In rejecting the English king’s claim the refusal was viewed as treasonous. Chauncy a monk at the London Charter House initially refused to take the oath but relented thinking it would preserve the monastery. He quickly renounced his oath but was haunted by his brief betrayal.Havens was also a Carthusian monk an eyewitness to the 1572 massacre from which he escaped. In 1608 he published a detailed account of the event. After Chauncy fled to Belgium he wrote four different versions of his account one of which was first published in 1550. It appears here in a version adapted by Havens and printed in 1608 to accompany his new work on the Roermond martyrs. Although there is no indication of the place of publication or printer of Havens’ account it is included in the initial omnibus title page which has the imprint of Gualterus Manilius in Ghent. Both are dated 1608. Frans Hendrickx in a 2008 review in Revue d’histoire ecclésiastique writes “Without an impressum it is not known exactly where the first edition of Havens’ work was published. Reference has been made to the printed matter in Cologne Würzburg and Ghent all from 1608.†He argues “there is good reason to accept that the first place of publication was Ghent†pointing particularly to the fact that Havens’ letter of dedication is dated February 29 1608 in Ghent. He adds “This may mean that Gualterus Manilius a member of the famous Ghent printing family published the story first.†The second part also includes Haven’s “Exhortatio … de observatione disciplinae regularis†pp. 57-77 in which he praises the regular discipline and solidary life of the Carthusian monks. According to the STCV listing this oration is mentioned in Vanderhaeghen F. Bib. Gantoise I 477 but it is overlooked in the other listings. The omnibus title from the first title page roughly translates in part as: “Account of the Life and the Martyrdom of Eighteen Carthusians who in England under King Henry VIII were cruelly murdered for the defense of the Church and against a detestable schism. … Together with a new Historical relation of the twelve Carthusian Martyrs of Roermond in the Year 1572.†There are two errors in the sub-title: 1 The year for the Roermond attack is misprinted as M.D.DXXII with D rather than L for 72 and 2 “angonem†has been corrected to “agonem†by the extraneous “n†being scratched out. USTC 1003501 STCV 6623698 Allison & Rogers I 239 Graesse III p. 220. Allison & Rogers describe this as another issue of their no. 238 “Innocentia et constantia victrix …†published by Bernard Gualterus Cologne 1608 with a revised title. The STCV listing adds that “Manilius substituted the title page and preliminaries†in this printing.Pagination: 8 111 1 blank; 16 77 3 – Missing four pages leaves 9-12 which Allison & Rogers 1989 describe as “the ‘Index capitum’ . . . and the end of dedicatory verses covered over with a new folding engraved plate ….â€Collation: 4 A-G8 E2 for F2; a/8 b-f8 – Allison & Rogers 1989 say “In pt. 2 the title is cancelled and replaced by a bifolium consisting of a new title printed by Manilius and an engraved plate†but that is not the case here where the original title page with no imprint is retained. The USTC reports six copies in four institutions; Allison & Rogers report 15 copies in 15 institutions. Size: 6" - Small Octavo Sm. 8vo. 188 pages. Text is in Latin. Item Type: Book. Text block is unmarked. There is separation in the bottom three inches at the beginning of signature A in the first work. Sympathetically rebound with laid paper endpapers in the original vellum cover.
